Drama viewership ratings for the week of Feb. 25-Mar. 3, 2019

How are we already in March? It feels like just yesterday when we were watching Yeom Jung-ah practically sell her soul in the name of education or Hyun Bin sell his sanity in the name of VR. Now, we’re watching sageuks and thrillers and rom-coms (oh my!) that are well into their run.

At the beginning of the week, we had Item clearly struggling in ratings while everyone else sped ahead. It’s the fantasy drama The Light in Your Eyes that garnered the most surprise from me; the numbers just keep going up. For Wednesday and Thursday, What’s Wrong Mr. Poong-sang nestled into the top spot with An Empress’s Dignity officially gone.

Meanwhile, over in the weekend slot, My Only Ally continues to dominate with its 30 to 40 percent ratings. Shows like The Fiery Priest still prove that their strong contenders, but poor comedy Legal High rests in last place.

The Light in your Eyes is multi-generational which could explain why its rating is going up. (I can totally see halmoni in control of the remote making the rest of the family watch this one.) I’m glad it is, but it’s too melo for me right now. I’ll just check the Beanie wall now and then to see how others are liking it before picking it back up.

The two romances on TVN are also holding their own as well, for cable, anyway. The production value of these two are so good. I love watching TVN for that reason.

What I’m biding my time and waiting for is a certain sageuk with Yang Sejong set to air soon. (Please, dramagods, make it good!)

I can see Yang Se Jong in a hair not unlike Byun Yo Han's in Six Flying Dragon.

The Light ... is not my cup of tea but I'm glad for them I like NMJ and it's always nice to see older actresses in roles other than mother/grandmother.

Same. I liked it at first, but I just paused ep 5 in the middle of it and never had the will to hit that play button again. Maybe I’ll come back to it when I am bored. It just too sad and depressing for me. I take back when I said it gave me My Ahjusshi feel. With My Ahjusshi, it’s like plot is good depressing cuz male and female lead work so hard to get through every single sh.tty day. With this drama tho, it’s so frustratingly depressing.
It doesn’t help that the characters being such lazy bums and have no ambitions trigger me. I can’t stand seeing the parents go through such a hard life in their older age when they got 2 adult kids who should be helping them out or at least move out of the house and stop leeching off of them. Maybe I’ll see Nam Joo Hyuk in another drama again and Han Ji Min too. I miss seeing her face 4.5 episodes in.

I'm not surprised about "Item", it's just crappy drama, JJH is my fave but I can't muster to watch actor I like in bad drama.

It's nice to see a weekday drama hit 20%. It's been a while. I'm enjoying Liver or Die and The Light in Your Eyes the most out of the dramas in this cycle, so it's good to see both doing well.

Poong-sang is doing 20%? Wow... I don't think Empress even reached that high. :O Fiery Priest is doing surprisingly well too but I'm worried that that means there's pressure on Kim Nam-gil to perform more/not take a rest when he's been injured twice already. :'(

It will be interesting to see if HAECHI's numbers (not bad considering) will bump up after the final episode of THE CROWNED CLOWN this Monday night. I am anticipating some of TCC viewers catching up with HAECHI.
Personally it has been difficult following two sageuk dramas at the same time. I am enjoying both but HAECHI is for me the harder watch. Not only the factional politics requires concentration but the production style, if you will, with a lot of night scenes and use of light filtering is a challenge for me. It is one of those dramas I will have to work a little harder at. The production style of HAECHI is reminding me of JOSEON X FILES.

@marcusnyc20 bong-soo,

Thank you! You may have hit on why I've put HAECHI on the back burner until CROWNED CLOWN ends. Cast of Thousandsitis was one thing, but the lighting is problematical for me, too. I had tried watching JOSEON X-FILES, and wanted to love it, but it was so danged hard to actually SEE anything in the gloom that I moved on to other shows despite some of my favorite actors being in the cast. Maybe now I'd have the patience to give it another shot.

Hang in there, Jung Il-woo. I'll be baaaaaack!

@pakalanapikake
JOSEON X-FILES...I have seen a version that is very washed out - It wasn't like that at all. It was visually sharp like X-Files (Mulder and Scully).

I would suggest a different copy of the drama (or Tv). My love for JXF is huge. It was one of the first to really step out of the box for Kdrama and open up new worlds.

Thank you, @SadKDramaLama! I'm glad to know that I might have a shot at enjoying it. If all else fails, I could crank up the light balance on my display. I use a utility called f.lux to offset excessive blue light, but often find myself having to disable it so I can see what's going on in atmospheric Kdramas. Thankee!

I'm glad somebody mentioned the visual problem. Some k-dramas are being shot too dark to see. I gave up watching "Kingdom" and some other drama recently because so much of the action was impossible to make out on the computer screen. Maybe with "Kingdom" it was just as well. To me the zombies were just sound effects.

@kellie
This is a trick from classic Noir. It allows dramas not to have to show everything. Kingdom was deliberately dark to avoid falling into the uncanny valley.

I can not imagine the expense/time to make it believable if the production had more light. In fact, in Noir where the screen was dark, often the sets weren't built at all (they couldn't afford it).

I liked the dark visuals in Kingdom...this way the bloodbaths were less gory to look at. Similar to that one scene in Kill Bill that was filmed black and white because otherwise it would have been just too much red.

I'm happy to see The Light in Your Eyes going up. I'm in love with that drama in almost every way. Also hoping Reach for Sincerity will see better ratings in its second half.

Agree re Reach of Sincerity. I started the show after epi 4 aired and I'm totally loving LDW and YIN! They absolutely deserve higher ratings. This show has me grinning like a fool and I feel truly invested in their budding romance. YIN brings a lovely charm to her character.

Happy for Romance is a bonus book: I am really enjoying it. It makes me grin like a crazy person. ahahah
I watched the first 3 episodes of Haechi: not bad but it is a bit heavy...all the politics and people...at the moment my brain cannot cope with it.
The Light in your eyes: happy for the ratings but I had to stop it for now. It is just too sad.

I think Item is a cross between a few shows that aired on SyFy a few years back: Warehouse 13 (objects that can do extraordinary things to be collected and kept away from the general public), Haven (people with strange abilities linked to 'events' in their lives), The Librarians, on TNT (objects infused with magic to be collected and kept away from the general public), and most importantly, The Lost Room (objects that give people the ability to do things, all coming from one room in a roadside motel that suffered an 'event'). Because of the similarities, I like Item. For now. Our protagonist feels too much, while the antagonist (straight crazy!) feels nothing at all. The objects are interesting, but we don't know what, why, or where they came from yet. I'm sticking with it to get answers!

This is the reason I started The Item. I loved Warehouse 13, Haven (the first two seasons) and The Librarians.

If you can find it, I recommend The Lost Room. It was a SciFi channel 6-hour miniseries way back in 2006. Item is really close to this show. And one day, I’ll get around to writing that W13/Lost Room fan fiction no one needs... except me.

I was like they dragged the hell out of the first 80 percent and then rushed the hell out of everything else. At the risk of repeating myself, the pacing was completely off. They really should have spent far more time on post bad guy reveal relationship development.

If the episode count stayed at 100 episodes like they originally announced, we would have had the time to see the relationship through. But even with the shortened run, I wish they could have figured out a way to give Chiyoo a baby.
