Drama viewership ratings for the week of June 24-30, 2019

Man, how time flies. We’re already at the end of June and saying goodbye to the first round of the summer dramas. On Tuesday, we had the finales of rom-com The Secret Life of My Secretary and fantasy thriller Abyss. Secret Life didn’t pass the 5 percent mark like I’d hoped, but it did get its highest rating at 4.6 percent. As for Abyss… well, it ended? So yay?

Moving on, we had the finales of two drama sequels, Rescue Me 2 and Voice 3. The former did pretty well for itself, but it was the latter that really surprised me. To be the third season in a series and to get 4 percent ratings (on a cable channel) is mighty impressive in my book. Who knows, maybe they’ll pull out a fourth season. In the meantime, we have plenty of new dramas coming this July, so I hope y’all are ready!

I watched and really enjoyed 1. I watched and enjoyed somewhat less 2. Since I subscribed to ODK I probably should watch 3.

I did not watch ABYSS but I became a fan of Ahn Hyo-seop after watching 30B17.
I will repeat a comment I made about Woo Do-hwan. Bear with me.
I became a WDH fan after watching MAD DOG. At the time I did not think his next drama TEMPTED was a good fit for him but I also realized how difficult it must be for a young actor to turn down a leading role.
I don’t want to make a judgement on AHS’s performances in ABYSS since I didn’t watch. I can’t help but think it might have been better for him to decline the role. One again I grant that it must be very difficult for a young actor to turn down a leading role.
Of course, I wish AHS lots of luck in the future just like I can’t wait to see WDH in the upcoming MY COUNTRY and THE KING: THE ETERNAL MONARCH.

The drama was a mess plot-wise but Ahn Hyo Seop fared pretty well in it. Apart from a couple of scenes in the beginning, he actually was pretty good. It didn't live up to my initial expectations but it wasn't a complete failure. I gave it a good 7.5/10 for originality and being entertaining even if characters were idiots. Anyways AHS is not responsible for Abyss not being a rating hit. The script was a mess period.

On the other side, Angel's last mission is my current fav' though L's performance is lacking... It is particularly obvious when he plays next to Shin Hye Sun.... who is just literally stealing the show from EVERYONE. My God she is just in-cre-di-ble... which makes me regret we got L. He's good with funny scenes but not so much when things get serious... though I'll give him that, the guy is trying hard... He's not good enough yet though...I would have loved another actor... let's say... Seo in Gook would have been just PERFECT... but you can't win them all...

This being said, I've got nothing against him, I remember when Hong Gil Dong was aired and we had Kang Ji Hwan acting next to Jang Geun Seok. I remember Javabeans putting screenshots of both actors next to each other and it was awful how Jang Geun Seok didn't know how to express himself when Kang Ji Hwan had such a nuanced look... But hey, the guy got better.

So L, I regret you got such a good role because I don't think you're up to it now and it's dampening my love for the show... but you're giving your all, so since you got it, keep it up. I'm sure it will pay off eventually. Good luck to you.

Seo In Guk would have been good but I don't think he would have accepted the role. At this stage in his career, he seems very selective and picks roles where he is the lead. He would have been outshone by the female lead in this case and so I don't see him picking this role.

He is picky with his role but honestly I don't think he chooses his roles based on whether he is the star or not. In fact, I'd argue that the pickier you are the more you look for challenging roles, doesn't matter if the actor has more or less screen-time, what's important is the intensity of the role you play.
Nobody can forget a good villain with a good backstory yet they're never the lead.
Rather with him in it, it would have been a completely different drama once our angel learns his past but what's done is done...

I agree about L... what it could have been if only we had a better actor instead of L in Angels last mission 😩😩😩

Thanks Lurker for your report on ABYSS. I am sure AHS learned a lot. Based on this instagram post it must have been a good experience:

Yeah, it’s tough to stand out when all four historical/pseudo historical shows are during the weekend.

Personally, I’m always on the verge of dropping the lower qualities ones (ARTHDAL CHRONICLES and JOSEON SURVIVAL) in favor of the superior NOKDU FLOWER. Sadly I haven’t had time to check out DIFFERENT DREAMS.

Yup. I've seen mixed feedback about Arthdal so I'm not checking it out (I've seen clips and I'm not impressed). Me too, I haven't had time to watch Different Dreams. It's sad that the better ones aren't getting the greater portion of viewers.

@wishfultoki,
Re ARTHDAL. For me, with the introduction of Saya the story has picked up speed and I am finding it more interesting. Also if you have watched through episode 8 you are into Part 2 and after episode 12 on 7 July I believe it takes a Netflix hiatus until September. I hope you can hang in there.

@marcusnyc20 Oh I’ll keep watching ARTHDAL. Part 1 was bad but the introduction of Saya made Part 2 better, so far.

it's getting better now but It's just sad that after Saya came out Eunseom's story was left out and the story now focus on Saya and Tagon. Hope they can show us how Eunseom cope up as he is Aramun Haesulla.

It's not like production and scheduling of dramas is some big secret. I always find it dumb when similar genres are scheduled together like this.

Nokdu Flower is also in a drama timeslot for SBS and while it started off with a bang with The Fiery Priest that very well may have been the exception rather than the norm.

Right.
Weekend sageuks used to have very high ratings but time has changed and there are more dramas now than before. There are 7 dramas (counting JOSEON SURVIVAL) during the weekends.

Also lighter and easy watch dramas tend to work better during earlier time slots.

I think Nokdu would do better in winter season, summer is always a bit of dead time for tv land due to weather and vacation time.

2

Arthdal is getting better and interesting now.
Joseon Survival is a good drama but underrated maybe because there's too many dramas airing right now.

I'm waiting to marathon the rest. I strongly dislike waiting for the next episodes when the drama is this good.
I might have to start over just to appreciate the small details that I've missed.
General Nokdu has some memorable quotes that I'd love to compile under one of the recapped episodes.

One Spring Night hits 8%, pretty darned decent.

I am a bit disappointed with the numbers for Perfume, this is a fun and wonderful sleeper of a series. It isn't about making fun of fat people, in fact I am hoping that in the end it is the 'real' woman that gets the guy and not the skinny version of herself.

go watch them now, they were so good! in my opinion, this week episodes are the best so far.
This drama, it has some ‘wtf’ and ‘rolling my eyes’ moments, haha (what with war times but the always stunning and beautiful clothes for the leads, esp Yoo Ji Tae, but man, I love him), so yeah that, but this is the only drama I follow since ep 1 and wasn’t dropped, while I have dropped 2 dramas last month,,I’m bit sad to see its rating, but I enjoy this drama so much so I tried not to be furious about the numbers, hehe

Notice the very low ratings on Monday for both Perfume and TSLOMS?

I saw an article on Naver, MBC aired a scoop about YG scandal in that time slot. The scoop got higher ratings than the dramas airing at the same time. Not gonna lie, the topic is juicy. And is this proof that people like to gossip? Haha

The finale for Secret Life of My Secretary was so dang cute and heartwarming, that I honestly don't even care anymore that it couldn't seem to muster up better viewership ratings during it's overall run. This drama worked for Me, and that's all that matters, lol.
