Premiere Watch: Taxi Driver

Time slot: Friday & Saturday
Broadcaster: SBS
Genre: Action, crime
Episode count: 16

Another drama, another webtoon adaptation — we sure do seem to be flooded with them lately! In Taxi Driver, we have a futuristic story about operatives who deliver vigilante justice under the cover of being taxi drivers. Our lead is one of these special ops agents, and is played by Lee Je-hoon. It sounds like a super fun setup, right? As a lover of vigilante justice, expert car driving, slick action, and especially Lee Je-hoon, I should be excited. But for some reason, none of the promo materials are doing it for me. Maybe this is a case of poor promos, awesome drama? We’ll have to tune in on Friday to find out.

SK Drama now is totally owning its prevalence for vigilante justice.

TL:DR - what this says will be someones thesis paper.

The original source material is very dark and graphic. Hmm, can SBS pull that off (Even w/ 19+ ratings)...

One thing, I really love that the FL here is Esom, as she's an underrated actress but recently in film has been making a small name. I love that they're similar ages, and both are credible actors.

Also Lee Je Hoon, hello!! He's an actor whose passionate in romance lol, but also crime too. Sometimes, he looks older than his age, and at times his age. But his nose, he has the best nose out of all the Korean actors!!

That nose indeed! I am yet to be impressed by his acting, although I have watched him only in Signal. (My views on this show are the opposite of what most beanies here think, I gather - I am not a fan) .

His acting in Signal for the first few episodes stood out as in (overacting) compared to his two mega watt leads. I seen him in other films/dramas, and he's quite good. The main critique I heard is that he's doesn't have much charisma, as in he does his work well but doesn't have the power to draw in people?

For me, the whole show - i.e., Signal - didn't work (I really only liked Choi Jin Woong as the ML). I did not like the FL at all, she was much better in Hyena (which was tons of fun - most of the time). I know many rate Signal as one of the best crime shows in kdramaland, but I rate Watcher as a better crime drama in comparison.

I personally love Signal, but I think that show emphasized more emotional attributes into a crime/thriller show, which for me worked but I can see why some wouldn't. IA, Choi Jin Woong was incredible in it. I read online that the FL would only talk about the ML/her relation was to the ML, and dating and not her own persona separate from him, which did make me second guess her character :/ The ending to Signal, tsk tsk...it's been 5 yrs. Ugh at open ended endings.

I watched two episodes of Watcher, and did like it but at the time was burned out on K-drama thriller shows. Perhaps, its worthy of going back to it. Speaking of Watcher, Seo Kang Joon is one of the mains in Zero (written by Stranger writer), and its a sci-fi show which well is tricky getting it right. Perhaps cough cough, CSW could've waited for that...:3

It's very pointy. I think he's good. Ok, but Where Stars Land wasn't his fault.

I heard they used a body double for him at the last episode lol what?! The show did good ratings wise.

Other than that, why was the show meh/bland? Was it the lack of chemistry? Or the boring airport stuff? I heard the 2nd couple (younger) were cute.

It was just the ending. It was misleading/ambiguous. Had he suddenly and magically lost his disability? It was weird too not to see his face (because of the body double); I always enjoy watching him. I really liked him in Tomorrow with You with Shin Min-a. Revenge stuff can be predictable and vigilante justice turns me off. I am hoping this is less predictable.

Oh got it. That's a bummer. Unless a serious accident occurred, not sure why they couldn't just use him? That's something that would drive me nuts if a show made it the end, but the ending/wrap up was messy esp. since this is a one season done show. Ambiguous endings for stories that don't need them irk me too!

I love Tomorrow With You. Such a shame that it came out after Goblin's schedule ended, as it prob. had a lot of pressure. Shin Min Ah and Lee Je Hoon's chemistry together was truly incredible. It's one of the few K-drama romances where I found their chemistry and romance to be utterly realistic, and if Min Ah wasn't w/ Kim Woo Bin then, I think these two would've been fire together!!

So many actors I like are in revenge, crime, thriller shows, and its like I get it but at the same time. If they were in a romance/rom-com again, I would die lol. I think for crime shows b/c they've a simple formula of centering around the cases, and the character's and boom easy success imo. Of course, if its more case centered, then snooze... Hoping this does well, b/c I want to see LJH in more leads!!

5

Well, I saw Jung Woo Sung and her. Ahem ;) But I know that was her breakthrough/rise as an actress. She has a cool vibe, I really liked her in BTIMFL. She's kinda dowdy in Taxi Driver (Her choice apparently, she went for curly hair/sneakers). But she's gorgeous, I like that the FL (altho does it feel like it?) is distinct looking/not as 'conventionally' pretty compared to the 2nd FL. In other dramas, it would be the other way around, so phew thankfully (let's get her more screen time/she's the FL right?). I think her and LJH could've sparkling/sexy chemistry/tension, but I feel like they're wasting that rn. (And no, I'm not talking romance wise). They seem well matched together in terms of age/acting/vibes, so let's utilize that PD/Writers!!

I really loved Shin Min Ah and Lee Je Hoon together too. She is a lovely actor, beautiful, clever and funny, everything she needs to be, and one of the few women who don't irritate me. It all depends on the story for the revenge, crime or thriller drama. But I'm so die hard, I'll watch almost anything that has someone I like in it. I often surprises me too that something that promises predictability takes a few twists in kdrama, so there's still hope for Taxi Driver. I'll give it a fair go, especially because of the leads.

Shin MIn Ah fan too?! You've perfect taste :) I love her a lot (She also regularly donates $$ to burn victims/personally visits the families as well). When I found that out, I was floored in a good way! " and one of the few women who don't irritate me." Woah same here, I feel the same way too on her! There are good actresses sure, but I either find them bland or too cutesy (I'm talking those who are late 20s/30s who still act cute).
Basically everything you said about her, IA 100%!! There aren't many actors as lovable yet charming as Shin Min-ah imo! She's a dream pairing with my fav actors lol!

Sometimes crime/thriller/revenge shows feel like the same-ish at times. But when it works well, it works. SBS is hit/miss on me, if this was OCN or Netflix (minus the open endings) possibly but yeah I'm here for LHJ the most lol.

2

Esom is on another level. Did you see her in Scarlet Innocence??

1

Just want to jump in to say that I love TWY and Shin Minah. I have yet to see a show that will top the natural and realistic chemistry and romance of LJH and SMA. Lol there's so little love for this show that i find it necessary to spread it whenever someone talks about it.

2

@wapzy Yay another fan!! Their chemistry was so amazing, that it was hard to see them being paired up w/ other people romantically after I finished this show. With SMA, she typically gets good/similar age ML's for her romances, so I think for her I can move on a bit easier lol. But for LJH, b/c he seldom does romance genres, I feel like its hard to see him w/ another leading lady (romances). I just feel like majority of his FL's haven't gotten that spark/chemistry that I've felt from TMY. I do think that it did help a lot that he had a big crush on SMA in rl, I think his respect for her seeped into the role and their chemistry. I do want to see him in another romance (he really wants to lol), w/ an equally equal partner (acting/looks/vibe). I wouldn't mind an older actress like a Kim Hee Ae (yes lol)/Kim Hye Soo type (They had chemistry).

I think b/c the ML turned some people off in the beginning, like did he really lover her or was using her? Also this aired after Goblin's last episode, I mean that's a lot of pressure on a show. It started off so good to, but LJH (SMA doesn't seem to say much about this that I know of?) seems to have some reverence for this show as it was his 1st romcom drama.

It was really atmospheric and romantic. I really loved seeing their mature/adult relationship/chemistry. And I loved SMA's portrayal as well, she was always a hoot! I recall a lot of kiss scenes/skin-ship which are a plus lol :D Luckily both our actors were skilled at doing them :D

Yes, yes, and yes. She's just glorious. So far I've seen her in My Girlfriend is a Gumiho, Arang and the Magistrate, Oh My Venus, Tomorrow with You, and Chief of Staff, so I've got some more to cover. I need to rewatch A Bittersweet Life now that I know her better. And Naked Kitchen is on my list. I first really loved her when she did the dance for the grandmother in Oh My Venus. She was hilarious.

* I either find them bland or too cutesy (I'm talking those who are late 20s/30s who still act cute).* I can't agree enough. It's such a pity. It makes me wonder about the "ideal woman" in dramas. Young, dumb and innocent? I could rant for a long time.

And very much like you, *I'm here for LHJ the most lol* We really are on the same page.

Did I reply to this? I forgot lol?

I loved her in A Bittersweet Life, she was the epitome of beauty! No wonder, LBH risked his life for her :D The beauty that makes men or women simp lol.

Naked Kitchen, weird title, but she and Ju Ji Hoon were fire together. She was also his costar in The Devil, which I hear is a great drama. It was before crime/supernatural dramas were a thing.

Yes, OMV introduced me to her charms!! I loved that her and SSJ were on equal levels, both acting/looks wise!!

Yeah, if were speaking of Taxi Driver. I find Esom to be the more gorgeous/intriguing than the 2nd FL. The 2nd FL is conventionally pretty, and is charming/cute, but it does feel a bit forced on ngl? I like Esom's looks, and I hope Taxi Driver uses her better than Ep 1-4 has used her thus far.

Right? We really are on the same page lol! I mean, ngl, LJH in 16 hours looking all hot/badass, and wearing lots of disguises is my catnip!!

When you say futuristic, is it going to be sci-fi?

With BEYOND EVIL wrapping up tomorrow with episode 16 I will have my first bean of the year.
I am a sageuk fan but I missed RSA, dropped RIVER, and watched one and a half episodes of JOSEON EXORCIST.
I am hoping for a fresh start with Jung Il- woo’s BOSSAM—STEALING FATE (if available on a legal site).

Thanks @pickleddragon. I can highly recommend BEYOND EVIL. 2020 was a great year for the kdrama cops/crime/mystery genres. I consider BE right up there with two of my 2020 favorites: NOBODY KNOWS and THE GOOD DETECTIVE.
(LOL I may have gone out on a limb with the kudos with 2 episodes to go with kdrama’s history of crash landing endings. However, I think BE is in good hands.)

3

oh wow @marcusnyc20 that is quite a testimonial. I'm really looking forward to it now! (fingers crossed on the last two eps!)

This sounds like me and my Stranger re-watches. I should have gotten half a dozen beans last year for that alone, by this logic.

Thank you. I was looking for it during the weekend and it didn’t show up, but now it does. Let’s see if this works, I haven’t seen any promotion, just here for Essom. I’ve already said I have a trauma with LJH due to Fox Bride Star (I never had it with CSB, though, I guess it means I blame him on that disaster...).

Ok... what happened to all the 15+ shows??! I was so looking forward to this, thinking I'd finally get to watch another Korean cop show after a drought of them... and it's 18+ again??!! I personally don't watch anything that would be rated R in its home country (meaning 18+ for Korea, R for America, the equivelents for other countries, so on... I'm really sad about this one, actually TT TT) Oh well... better luck next time, I guess.

Also wasn't this show picked up on Dramabeans to recap? I saw the poster on the Currently Recapping tab a week ago, and now its no longer on there? I hope that it wasn't a mistake, and we could see the show being recapped if there aren't any other upcoming shows that take it...
