[Beanie Recs] Business fashionistas

Ahoy, Beanies! It’s time to gather your collective genius for a new recommendation series that features you and your drama knowledge. Each week we’ll drop a drama conundrum and leave it up to you to provide a drama rec, and the appropriate rationale behind it, be it long or short. Respond below!

Seo Hyun-jin’s character in Why Her? has a killer professional wardrobe that makes my closet weep with envy. I don’t have her budget, but I can still draw inspiration from K-drama fashionistas. Any other dramas to recommend with awesome workplace fashion?

Have a very particular drama itch that needs scratching? In need of a Beanie Rec? Email us at hello @ dramabeans.com and we’ll feature your topic in a future post.

I love office fashion in kdramas! Even though some of the stuff would never pass muster in an office where I live or is way out of budget. Some recs -
1. Lee Da-hee in Search:WWW and The Beauty Inside
2. Son Ye-jin in CLOY and Thirty-Nine
3. Jeon Yeo-been in Vincenzo
4. Song Hye-kyo in Encounter and Now, We Are Breaking Up
5. Kang Han-na in Start-up (probably the most affordable of the lot)

For fashion that is trendy, affordable and more workplace-appropriate, all the workplace romance C-dramas are also a good source.

I loved some of the looks in Vincenzo, especially in the scene where our two lawyers look like absolute rock stars getting out of the car for the trial - that pink suit was amazing, and only looked better next to Song Joong-ki's blue one!

Other ones that came to mind were Search WWW, which has lots of powerful women in powerful clothing, and Touch Your Heart/Reach of Sincerity, where the female lead has to figure out what she can wear that is appropriate for a law office, but also fun and interesting for her.

This is kind of a weird one, and I honestly don't recommend the drama itself, but I was in love with almost every outfit Nam Joo-hyuk wore in Bride of Habaek. I am pretty much always into suits, and his were fun and androgynous enough that I ended up wanting basically all of them (especially that floral one!) for myself.

I thought we were all equally traumatised by Shin Min-ah's Christmas tree Gucci dress though.

Among the many irritating things in that irritating drama, that dress stood out like the Namsan Seoul Tower.

Most of her wardrobe was pretty, if just a touch little-girly and impractical for a working dentist. It suited her character.

definitely shouts of last minute PPL that they had put off till the very end because the dress was a total mismatch for the character and the show.

I think she wore it because she's a global ambassador for Gucci. Just wish she'd made a better choice!

I like the men’s wear in most of the dramas where they are doing ok financially as they seem to consistently get clothes that suit the season, are really well fitted and I love the range of long coats, and nice suits.

The women on the other hand have shorts, or mini skirts regardless of the weather, ridiculously high heels and random extreme fashion styling especially if they work in fashion design department. It took me ages to get that it wasn’t that Korea was obsessed with mini skirts but it was just plain sexism across the different dramas. School uniform was a prime example until they started showing the girls with tracksuit bottoms under the skirts. It’s so bad they now have a blanket or boys coat to protect their dignity when they do the obligatory piggy back ride.

There's probably a whole thesis in the difference between school uniforms in Korean and Chinese dramas.

Haven't seen these two being mentioned:
- Seol In Ah and Seo Hye-won in Business Proposal - I love Kim Se Jeong but her wardrobe was a little tame or too girly for my liking
- Kim Go Eun in Yumi's Cells (tbh her wardrobe is a little more accessible for the everyday employee. It's not very flashy though, compared to all the forementioned wardrobes)

Kim Hye-Soo in Hyena. Her wardrobe is almost a character in and of itself, and puts the “power” in “power suit.” I love that as she rises from fly-by-night shyster to the top of one of the elite law firms, her clothes go from kinda trashy to increasingly luxurious, while still retaining their flamboyant style and eye-popping colors. Her wardrobe is the perfect expression of her “I’m here. Deal with it” personality. 🤩

Ju Ji-Hoon is a pretty snazzy dresser in this show, too, though in a (much) more understated style.

Gosh I love Hyena. That was a fun show! Kim Hye Soo and Ju Ji Hoon's style together were perfect. I did love he started to dress more snazzier in the last episode (the plaid suit with brown oxfords with blue tips) to match her. That signified they were both equals now.

I really liked Kim Hye Soo's phone crossbody thing she wore, probably one of the first to wear it! Also loved the motif with her big square sunglasses as well! The reflection would show off her big dream of buying the luxury law firm!
