Random thoughts Friday:

So recently I started watching Chinese and Japanese dramas after a couple of years of blanking them. As I read the subtitles every now and again I hear myself saying the Korean word. I just watched an episode of Mimicus and the boy didn’t say thank you and I am saying it for him and telling him not to be so rude.

This seeing/hearing English and translating it automatically into another language happened when I doing British sign language. I think it is like my picking up accents when I talk to people from different parts of the UK. I wish it also meant that I could learn and speak multiple languages quickly and easily!

In Mimicus the kids say what sounds like and is translated as Hi when they are saying goodbye is this a youth slang thing or is hi a shortened form of a Korean casual word for goodbye?

" As I read the subtitles every now and again I hear myself saying the Korean word. "

Lol I do this all the time. And vice versa as well.

"In Mimicus the kids say what sounds like and is translated as Hi when they are saying goodbye is this a youth slang thing or is hi a shortened form of a Korean casual word for goodbye?"

Do you mean "annyeong"?? 안녕
Annyeong can mean both hi and bye in informal Korean, yes.

Sorry I didn't explain it properly the word sounds like the English word Hi and the subtitles says Hi too that’s why I was confused.
Because I know they will occasionally use English words instead of Korean like OK I was confused why they would say Hi instead of bye so thought I had heard it as Hi but they were actually saying bye. Like Coppee for coffee.

That's so cool.
The problem I have these days is that I can't remember words in spanish.
When I can only know how to say the word in english, it's fine because I can just ask the other person (most of the people I know speaks english) but when I can only remember the word in korean, I get frustrated because I can't ask and the other person is waiting for me to finish the sentence 😂😞

Since I live in a very Spanish influenced region every first attempt comes out Spanish flavored, which pisses Italians off no end. My sister taught French for many years so that's a language I know some phrases for.
If we all at least make our best attempt to show respect and communicate sincerely, we will nudge our world toward the good. That's the beauty of global drama, eh?

It's funny you say that. 😂 Everytime my sister gets angry because I say something in Korean that she doesn't understands, I tell her that wouldn't happen if she watched more dramas, and then she starts talking french (wich means it's my turn to get annoyed lol).

You're right.
It's always fun to tease your siblings, but in general, the best we can do is show respect, be sincere and have patience. And of course watch some dramas to get a little more familiar with the language. Hehe.

My recent Chinese dramas are all current day Moonlight rom com which I have only just started watching and before that it was The day of becoming you which is fantasy rom com. My favourite Chinese drama is Go ahead slice of life, romance.

I have watched period dramas Eternal love (10 miles of Peach blossom) is fantasy romance drama. Nothing Gold can stay slice of life. Ruyi’s royal love in the palace romance palace politics. They were all years ago on Prime.

I have seen The day of becoming you and Go ahead both. (I have actually noted "Go Ahead as my favourite found family drama on another post here). I am also re-watching one of my favourite serial from India. It is called Rishta.com. It was about two university friends who set a match-making agency together. I am not sure if there is a version with subs out there somewhere, but I felt is had a potential to be re-made.

Doesn’t look like it’s available as it’s so old I bet there will be a modern version already made or in the making.

I have not watched an Indian movie for years I went through all the ones that weren’t violent on Amazon and Netflix back in the day and then my eye was drawn to Korean dramas and I have not looked back since. I loved them as I love romance and musicals and therefore had the best of both worlds. I did watch a lot of the more serious content ones too.
I also read a few books - A fine balance which was one of the sad ones stuck with me after hearing it serialised on radio.

If you are wondering what Jung So-Min did after filming ALCHEMY OF SOULS, she went on a Jeju vacation. Later this month, she will share her trip on her YouTube channel. Since most of Jung So-Min's scenes were outdoors on location, it must have been a grueling shoot.

Many actresses have mentioned in interviews that after they finish a project, they like to relax by traveling. But the pandemic restrictions put a damper on it. Even international travel is still restricted or very expensive. Also the "reward" trip for cast and staff for a blockbuster series finish is mostly a thing of the past.

I really find it hard to distinguish between Im Ju-hwan and Kwon Yul onscreen. I have to use thier past works to tell who it is I'm watching at the moment. If they're casted in the same drama as twins or siblings, I'll be entirely sold on the semblance.

You see.
Well this is how the confusion started.
I watch The Spies Who Loved Me and was wowed with Im Ju-hwan's Derek Hyun. So months later I watched My Unfamiliar Family and there was the appearance of the chatty lawyer who happens to be a friend of Eunjoo. For a long time I thought it was Im Ju-hwan not knowing that it was Kwon Yul whom I enjoyed in Whisper some months back. And just like that, the confusion started and still remains😅.

I just looked them up and had to do a double take as they were wearing similar colours in their Asian Wiki pictures. I have some face blindness issues at the best of times so it doesn’t take much to confuse me! But looking up one of their works I think I have found my next favourite drama based solely on the write up so will be looking for any further info between now and release. Its called Three siblings bravely who knows if it will be an international release. I hope I will get to watch it and that it is a slice of life with no thriller elements.

I can handle those dramas but the shouty mother in law/chaebol wife/brother/dad type character gets old quickly that trope proper gets on my nerves but the rest I accept.
My stand out weekender was Mother of mine I loved it and that mum was golden but would shout for England if she felt it was needed.

If you have a local independent baker, you may want to ask them how to make a starter dough.

Starters are not that hard to raise... if you started with a "live" (bubbly) one and it seems like it has conked out, bring it to room temperature and feed it once or twice in a day, it should perk back up. They can live in the fridge just fine once they are healthy, as long as you feed them once a week, but they'll be perkier at room temperature.

Thank you! I'm able to bring mine "back" when I pop it in the fridge I just don't think it's perky enough somehow

Feed it every two days and perhaps add a tablespoon of rye flour.

If you can't get a good performance out of it it probably means you're feeding it too seldom. Kept in the fridge, I think you need to feed it about twice a week once it's settled in. Or a simpler method is to add a small amount of yeast. It keeps the slightly sour taste to the bread but rises as it should within a few hours.

I kept my starters for several years but grew tired of this constant process of feeding. Nowadays I simply use about 8g of fresh yeast and let the dough prove for about 3-4 hours. This gives a better taste and is a lot more pleasant to the gut. Plus, a packet of fresh yeast, kept in an air-tight container in the fridge keeps for at least two months, given that you wipe of the condense once in a blue moon.

2

Required fields are marked *

@lillamy Thank you! I have been using rye flour actually... usually feed with 30 grams rye to 70 white. That feels like a lot, right? *brain explodes*

I haven't heard of adding yeast to the sourdough starter, wow! So would do a normal bulk rise with the starter and then add the yeast during proofing? Or you mean just combine both steps, make the dough with the starter and add the yeast then for the 3-4 hour rise? Because that's amazing!

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

No, I'm sorry for being a little vague. Not adding it to the starter but the dough when you're baking. Just a square centimeter is well enough (if the yeast is fresh and pliable). In fact, a sour dough starter and yeast can't co-exist in the fridge as the yeast will compromise the starter (don't remember how though). This is how I found out that yeast keeps so well in a container.

I kept one dough solely on rye and one on wheat which a started with 50/50 rye but then replaced with only wheat (whole grain) when feeding.

I'm watching cdrama Love between fairy and devil and it fits your requirements. I've paused a few kdramas to watch it because it's that addictive and good. The only con is that it's yet not completed. There are 12 more episodes to go that will air this week and next, 6 per week. But if you can manage to binge the 24 released just in time, for the final week, it can work out. Else you can wait for it to finish.

But for squee alone, I'd recommend You are My glory. Day of becoming you is another good show but with lesser squee and more fun.

Not so good week - not so good upcoming several weeks -

December - 3 months fight scene - it is fun. Autumn usually is favourable to me but this time around things will change and weather of these things won't be as much kind to me. Exciting for sure.

You accept, you smile, you stand up and you fight. Not a single boring day. Let's see how things go from now on. I still have enough space to surf over tides, still enough to march into skies, higher and higher.

I get into pinch and then i get back - good game it is.

Heart is clean and transparent and getting far better.

It was good, it is good and with more less rain it will be even more good. Teasing clouds are a beautiful watch. This time around not much rainfall - well, every year should be different. Only then you can check the quality levels of things around.

Night time that moisture isn't, the cool clean air isn't. so, yeah, something you want but overall pretty good season leading to more expectations from autumn.

XI has the possibility to escape - let's see the quality of their think tanks which usually include all data analytics.

This season will be decided by inflation - play well and gain more control, hero to villain, villain to hero. common man to leader - This is what a good gamble is. Good gamble with huge rewards. If you are sensible, capable and ambitious you can make big. I don't think 2023 earlier months gonna provide such good platform. go all in and try hard.

Well, these words are much for everyone, and i would do better to take full advantage of such atmosphere.

That and notes, texts etc. shown on the screen long enough to let us know it’s significant but no subtitles to help us out. Maybe Netflix only generates by sound and no humans are overseeing to pick up on the gaps or correct where literal translations don’t work.

I have noticed instrumentals playing but words are shown on screen. I had assumed they were just instrumentals but clearly they are the versions without words.

Regardless, this is definitely one of the very few kdramas I enjoyed all the way through and feel sad to see it go!

Happy weekend Beanies and keep Beaning On!

So I literally had a wardrobe malfunction last Friday night. Everything was ready for bedtime…except my outfit for the next day. In my haste to grab some clothes I somehow ruined a shelf and down it went.😅I did not want to wake my parents because they were moving my grandparents’ stuff last weekend and needed the sleep. In all my clumsiness I managed to ruin two other shelves in a successful attempt to remove the first one from the wardrobe.😂Goodbye bedtime, hello emergency cleaning out my wardrobe! Fortunately, I was able to safely store the shelves and clothing elsewhere until my dad fixed it. No more shopping for me, heaven knows what I will find during the big wardrobe cleanup tomorrow!🤣

Of course, such malfunctions only happen at the most inconvenient of times, right? My friend was coming over for that infamous Disney marathon & Asian food sleepover and stayed until Monday evening. Despite spending the whole weekend moving furniture and stuff, my parents still needed help with the grocery shopping and moving more utensils to my grandparents’ new place and in the mean time we had my sister’s kids to watch and our own household and grocery shopping to take care of. It is Friday evening again before you know it and after running around all week, it still feels like you have not accomplished much!😆

Something that confuses me when I see people criticize dramas or actors in those dramas is when they say "the actor picked a bad script", "they should've picked a better script", etc.
Aren't they filming and writing the shows at the same time?
I don't know when production starts on these projects but let's say they start the table reads and filming the show once 4 episodes have been written, how can anyone know if the script isn't working at that point? (Then again, maybe by episode 4 the holes do start to form haha I don't know) And isn't that the point of the table reads? To get a feel for the characters and the pacing? Also, don't the writers sometimes change things due to outside circumstances such as audience feedback or production issues?

I mean, unless they are just doing a project *just* for the money and/or experience, no one ACTIVELY chooses scripts they think are bad. The topic usually seems interesting and/or challenging.
I wonder how much is luck vs skill when it comes to picking projects.

I really could never be an actor cause I probably wouldn't be able to pick good scripts.
(As well as all the other reasons I couldn't be one)

How could SIG have thought this Cafe M was any good? One line of dialogue should have been enough to convince him. I get trying to do a fresh character but if it means a bad script, it is better to wait. Having said that, some dramas might be great on paper and somehow don't work when produced. I don't think they can back away after doing tables because by then contracts are signed. Writers do change and wreck or improve dramas but again, I think when people blame the actor's choice they only talk about dramas that were bad from early episodes.

2

Required fields are marked *

No I do understand this one actually.
Depending on how much he say he gets in his own script picking ofc, you could clearly see he was having a shittone of fun in the first half, and enjoyed stretching his comedic chops.
The show would be 100% unwatchable with anyone else but Ziggy in the lead role. So I get wanting a fun script.

(That being said... whilst acting will come with extended knowledge of the industry... Personally I don't think an actor is necessarily guaranteed to know what good writing is just because they're an actor... )

7

Required fields are marked *

Dramas are either written only the week of or a few weeks in advance, and shot whilst airing, or they're preproduced.
And, as can be seen by Kwak Dong Yeon's interview on Jinjoo's YT channel, not all actors get to pick their own scripts period. It is highly dependent on a myriad of other factors and not everyone has the same freedom.

I think the term "actor picked a bad script" has become a sort of colloquialism almost for "this drama is a bad or unfortunate pick for this actor, no matter what the circumstances of the picking or if they could've foreseen how it'd end up/had the whole script available".

But yeah, it's usually more complicated than that haha.

It is becoming more common that agencies are aligned or affiliated with production companies who have more control over casting. Independent agencies may attempt to line- up projects well in advance so projects can change direction/cast/direction before filming starts. Very few stars can outright veto a script; it is a collaboration between agency, manager and artist. There are some actor/agency that go for the most money. More and more schedule conflicts are the final factor.

A story may be great on paper but it takes effort to execute it onto film. Actors have bring life to characters and director needs to put the vision together. There are a lot of moving pieces that can go wrong, including burnout from 4 am wake up calls for 14 hour shoots.

Filming takes up a lot of the year and I am sure producing albums is equally time consuming so either they will spend time apart on different continents or one of them is retiring. Couples in the industry often struggle to maintain their relationships so I really hope they make it work. It sounded like they were of an age that they just know they are perfect for each other.
