Today’s Webtoon: Episodes 7-8

The path to achieving one’s dream can be a long and arduous one. This week, long-time webtoon authors grapple with disillusionment and burnout, while our producers do their best to instill hope in them again.

Today’s Webtoon Episodes 7-8

While on a jog at the Han River, Ma-eum runs into webtoon assistant Dong-hee. He’s here to take reference photos for his webtoon, and he asks Ma-eum to look over his draft before he submits it to a webtoon contest. Ma-eum tries her best, but she misunderstands that it’s a love story between an AI and a human, much to Dong-hee’s disappointment.

Back at Writer Baek’s estate, Dong-hee advises Dae-ryuk to redraw his draft and amend the depth and perspective to make it more realistic. However, Dae-ryuk defends his choice, explaining that he shifted the focus to the pursuers in order to heighten the tension.

Today’s Webtoon Episodes 7-8

It sinks in that Dae-ryuk truly has an innate talent for staging his webtoon panels, despite never having any formal art training, and Dong-hee’s jealousy grows. When he fails to make the cut for the webtoon contest yet again, it’s the last straw.

Dong-hee reads Dae-ryuk’s webtoon draft out of desperation, and the monster in it takes on a life of its own, emerging from the laptop screen and baring its teeth at Dong-hee. It’s a jarring scene that’s tonally dissonant, even discordant, with the rest of the drama.

Today’s Webtoon Episodes 7-8

The next morning, Dae-ryuk arrives to find his laptop damaged beyond repair. It sends him into a panic, since he has no back-ups whatsoever. Luckily, Ma-eum backed up the files he emailed to her, which only leaves a few for Dae-ryuk to redraw.

That’s a relief, but the more pressing issue is the matter of who broke Dae-ryuk’s laptop. Ma-eum can’t imagine Dong-hee ever doing anything of the sort, but Joon-young reminds her that she can’t know for sure what kind of thoughts someone harbors within.

Today’s Webtoon Episodes 7-8

Having known Dong-hee for a decade, Writer Baek sees right through him, and he invites him out for a drink. Dong-hee has been feeling guilty over his impulsive actions, and he finally admits that he’s terribly jealous of Dae-ryuk’s talent. In comparison, he feels like he’s wasted his youth.

Reading Dae-ryuk’s webtoon made him confront the truth about himself that he never wanted to acknowledge — he was simply running away from his inner demons. By constantly cracking self-deprecating jokes at his own expense, Dong-hee was preemptively defending himself from others’ judgment. Yet that very mindset was keeping him stagnant, unable to fully commit to pursuing his dream.

Today’s Webtoon Episodes 7-8 Today’s Webtoon Episodes 7-8

Dong-hee finally musters up the courage to break out of his shell and take a step forward. He sincerely thanks Writer Baek for all that he’s done for him; though his journey thus far was fraught with uncertainty, he was happy to work under Writer Baek’s guidance.

Ma-eum visits Dong-hee with feedback on his webtoon draft, but he informs her that he’s not going to draw webtoons anymore. Having realized that he was afraid of debuting as a professional writer and receiving criticism regarding his work, Dong-hee has decided to overcome his fear of judgment and carry forward with his life. It’s a bittersweet moment, as Ma-eum wishes him well in his future endeavors, and he encourages her to keep producing webtoons.

Today’s Webtoon Episodes 7-8

Afterwards, Ma-eum returns home with a heavy heart. She admits to her mom that she wanted to dissuade Dong-hee from giving up, since all his years of effort would go to waste. However, she couldn’t, because she was reminded of how much her dad wanted her to continue as a judo athlete.

Ma-eum’s mom reassures her that her dad will come around eventually; he just needs time to accept her decision. She pulls Ma-eum into a hug, and Ma-eum cries in her mother’s comforting embrace.

Today’s Webtoon Episodes 7-8

The next day, Dong-hee leaves Writer Baek’s estate. Dae-ryuk is stunned, and when the other assistant notes that Dong-hee left his tablet behind, Dae-ryuk immediately rushes out to hand it back to him.

Aw, Dong-hee left it behind for Dae-ryuk to use. Tentatively, Dae-ryuk asks if Dong-hee’s leaving because he was too much of a nuisance. Oh, Dae-ryuk. Despite how blunt he is on the surface, it’s clear that Dae-ryuk is sensitive and thoughtful; he just doesn’t know how to express it.

Taking the chance, Dae-ryuk tells Dong-hee that he was very moved by his webtoon’s story of an AI finding its own identity. Omg, he understood it! Stunned speechless for a moment, Dong-hee breaks out into a delighted laugh.

Today’s Webtoon Episodes 7-8 Today’s Webtoon Episodes 7-8

Thanking Dae-ryuk for being the first to recognize the essence of his webtoon, Dong-hee comes clean about breaking his laptop. He apologizes sincerely, then tells Dae-ryuk to work hard on his behalf — to which Dae-ryuk points out that he can’t, since he’s not him. Haha, he’s endearingly blunt as ever.

It’s actually a very poignant line; Dong-hee spent way too long resenting himself for not being like other people, and harboring jealousy towards others for not struggling like he did. Dong-hee truly seems a lot brighter now that he’s let go of his bitter resentment and come to terms with his circumstances, and I’m glad to see him take that first step towards affirming his own self-worth.

Today’s Webtoon Episodes 7-8

Joon-young’s given his first big job, and it’s to write a report justifying why the webtoon section ought to stay on Neon’s main homepage. For a second, he recalls Chief Heo’s instructions to sabotage the team from within, and it almost seems like Joon-young might waver.

Still, Joon-young’s ethics win out, and he types up an excellent report that succeeds in convincing Neon’s CEO YOON TAE-HEE (Baek Joo-hee). The webtoon section will stay on the front page until the date of the team’s evaluation rolls around. Of course, this incurs Chief Heo’s ire, but CEO Yoon is firm about her decision.

Today’s Webtoon Episodes 7-8

While going about her daily routine, Pomme notices that the CCTVs in her apartment are tracking her movements. It dawns on her that she’s being spied on via hidden cameras, and she calls Joon-young in a panic. He rushes over to affix tape onto every device with a camera, blocking the creep’s view.

Still, it’s only a stopgap measure, and Joon-young asks Pomme if she knows anyone who could be the culprit — but she claims that only he and Young-bae know her address. That is, until Joon-young notices a photo that Pomme posted on her Instagram, with a delivery parcel clearly captured in the shot. Well, that’s certainly one way to reveal your address to everyone.

Unfortunately, Joon-young and Pomme don’t have many leads to go on. The creep that’s been stealing Pomme’s parcels was careful to conceal his identity, and they can’t make out any distinguishing features beneath his cap and mask.

Today’s Webtoon Episodes 7-8

This week, we learn that Hye-mi is the assistant editor of Youngtoon, the second largest webtoon platform (and the platform that Chief Heo is planning to acquire after disbanding our team). She and Ji-hyung used to date many years ago, but they’ve since broken up.

Not only does Hye-mi keep playing coy around Ji-hyung, inserting herself into his life despite it being clear he’s uncomfortable with her presence, but she also oversteps professional boundaries. She tries to poach Kang-nam over to Youngtoon, slyly enticing him with the promise that he can write the genre he truly enjoys instead of his popular gumiho webtoon.

Today’s Webtoon Episodes 7-8 Today’s Webtoon Episodes 7-8

Ji-hyung and Ma-eum conveniently stumble upon their dinner meeting, and Ji-hyung quickly realizes that they may lose Kang-nam to Youngtoon. That would spell the doom of their team, since Kang-nam is Neon Webtoons’ main moneymaker.

Ma-eum is anxious and disheartened, and since she wears her heart on her sleeve, her distress is palpable. Aw, Joon-young offers her snacks and encourages her to stay strong — the very words she likes to hear. It touches Ma-eum’s heart, since she knows how much Joon-young doesn’t like those words.

Today’s Webtoon Episodes 7-8

Ji-hyung and Ma-eum both try their best to convince Kang-nam to stay; Ji-hyung does so by treating Kang-nam to lunch, and Ma-eum does so by impulsively calling Kang-nam and telling him how much his gumiho protagonist San-ha means to her.

Ma-eum describes San-ha as her role model who gave her a lot of strength during her judo and college days. She’s certain that just like her, there must be many young girls who also look up to San-ha, and she hopes that Kang-nam will continue the gumiho webtoon for a long time.

Today’s Webtoon Episodes 7-8

Her sincerity moves Kang-nam, but it doesn’t solve the root of the problem — Kang-nam only began drawing the gumiho webtoon in accordance with Ji-hyung’s advice. Though he much prefers darker plots, Ji-hyung noted that his art style suited bright and cheerful storylines more. He’d convinced Kang-nam to give it a shot, and it had earned Kang-nam his current success.

Wanting to draw something different at last, Kang-nam contemplates wrapping up the gumiho webtoon quickly and jumping ship to Youngtoon. However, his mind reveals his true feelings; Kang-nam begins hallucinating his gumiho protagonist everywhere.

Today’s Webtoon Episodes 7-8 Today’s Webtoon Episodes 7-8

Kang-nam just can’t shake his visions of San-ha, and every time she appears, he instinctively chases after her as if in a trance. Eventually, it dawns on him just how much he’s grown to treasure San-ha.

That night, Ji-hyung gets a phone call — Kang-nam’s decided to stay with Neon Webtoons and continue drawing his gumiho webtoon, though he’ll also be publishing a short piece with Youngtoon. Omg, yay! Ji-hyung and Ma-eum rejoice, and Joon-young even cracks a small smile too.

Today’s Webtoon Episodes 7-8

One webtoon author’s struggles may have been resolved, but another is still fighting his demons. We get a deeper glimpse into Dae-ryuk’s trauma this week, and it’s clear he was abused as a child. Due to his past, Dae-ryuk finds it difficult to be around women, and he flinches badly when touched. It happens twice this week, triggering him badly and sending him into panic attacks.

Dae-ryuk’s webtoon is a form of catharsis for him, since he instinctively incorporates his traumatic experiences into his webtoon. His monster, Feeb, is a weapon that preys upon humans’ fear, given that it’s an emotion which can’t be suppressed. The antagonist uses Feeb to dominate mankind, and the only person who stands up against his tyranny is the protagonist.

Today’s Webtoon Episodes 7-8

Perhaps to Dae-ryuk, the protagonist is who he wishes he could be, but he’s not quite there yet. Reeling from having his repressed trauma suddenly dredged up, Dae-ryuk ends up standing at the edge of a rooftop, pushed to the brink and seeing no other way out of his misery.

That same night, Ma-eum receives a call that has her and Joon-young racing out of the office. Oh no, please let Dae-ryuk be okay… I know his character arc isn’t resolved yet, so he’ll likely survive this, but it still hurts my heart to see him in pain. He’s so strong for pushing through and trying his best to confront his fear, and I hope that he’ll receive all the support (and therapy) he needs to heal.

Today’s Webtoon Episodes 7-8

This week, the drama focused on how easy it can be to get swept up in the motions and lose sight of one’s initial passion. I liked the different lenses it used to showcase this theme; it shows that no one is immune to it, and that it can creep up on you without you even realizing it.

Dong-hee’s impostor syndrome is painfully relatable, and I felt a lot of sympathy for him. His fear of never measuring up to other people’s judgment caused him to devalue himself and cut himself down to size first, so that others wouldn’t get the chance to.

As for Kang-nam, working on the same webtoon for years on end gradually chipped away at his motivation. It’s easy to grow sick and tired of something you’re constantly working on, and I think being able to work on his side project with Youngtoon will be a much-needed breather for Kang-nam.

Today’s Webtoon Episodes 7-8

On that Youngtoon note — Hye-mi is awfully manipulative, and her modus operandi of constantly pushing Ji-hyung’s buttons while acting sugary sweet is frankly quite distasteful (and potentially even toxic). If this was what she was like in the past, I can see why they broke up.

Despite claiming to harbor no ill will, Hye-mi’s actions speak for themselves. Kang-nam means a lot to both Ji-hyung and Man-cheol, since he’s the only webtoon author that has been working with them ever since their Gingertoon days. Obviously, Hye-mi knows that, and if her smug smiles are anything to go by, she’s clearly satisfied that she’s getting a rise out of Ji-hyung.

Today’s Webtoon Episodes 7-8

Youngtoon’s poaching doesn’t just stop at webtoon authors, though, because Ji-hyung gets an offer to become Youngtoon’s chief editor. It’s a step up from his current position as Neon Webtoons’ assistant editor, and the job at Youngtoon comes with a hefty salary.

Of course, the Ji-hyung we know isn’t the type to be swayed by materialism over sentiment, but then again we can never know for sure. Neon Webtoons may be seeing some hope thanks to our diligent rookies, but until the tide makes a decisive turn, it’s still a sinking ship.

Today’s Webtoon Episodes 7-8

Last but definitely not least, I’m loving the growth that our rookies are displaying. Ma-eum already had a sensible head on her shoulders before, but her time at Neon is clearly helping her mature. Not only is she learning how to deal with setbacks, but she’s also slowly coming to accept that they’re a natural part of life — unlike in judo, she doesn’t have to fight and win every battle.

Similarly, Joon-young’s gradually finding his footing in the team, and he now genuinely enjoys his work. Yay! Though Chief Heo’s pressure is still looming over his shoulders, Joon-young’s growing increasingly reluctant to sell out his coworkers, and I hope he eventually stands up for them once and for all.

What a lovely recap @solstices, you captured everything I also felt and thought watching this week's episodes! 💕

I too appreciate the way that this show is exploring the idea of passion, chasing dreams etc through a number of different lenses. I found it a little tough to watch Donghee feel more and more beat down as insecurity and jealousy begun to pile up within him, because it just felt so real in the way it was portrayed. I could really feel how pathetic he felt and how frustrated he was, especially in a situation where it's not only yourself you have to answer to but family and friends too. It's something we all go through, and is especially hard to avoid when you have things like LinkedIN and Instagram etc. that sometimes make the toxic self comparison unavoidable so I appreciate the earnest look into that and the decision to not have him miraculously win a competition/join Neon/finally get a lucky break but instead have him accept that this was his limit but without regret for exploring this path in the first place. As hard as it is to work for your dream, it takes just as much effort and courage to recognise when it's time to accept things the way they are, whilst also understanding that it doesn't mean you're 'worth' any less as an individual.

In a similar vein, I also appreciate the little parallel there between how Maeum felt trying to dissuade Donghee and how her dad might've felt when she told him she was moving on - it kind of makes the point that his feelings are valid too considering circumstances and that he'll eventually come around, which I'm grateful for because we've got enough 'strict and over the top parent unwilling to accept that their child has autonomy' characters in the drama world.

Also interesting points of note for me at least: the high schoolers partying at Junyoung's house?? who are they? and why did Jinhyung look like he was smiling a bit regretfully to himself towards the end of ep 8 after seeing Maeum and Junyoung in the office together 👀 this show sometimes has these specific but vague split second shots that focus on a character reaction with no explanation or follow up given that make you go hMM. Another example was when Jihyung was all 🤯 when Maeum and Junyoung said they'd go to Pomme's house together and there was a split second scene of Yoomi watching Jihyun with a knowing smile on her face, and also when Jihyung came in with that coffee and saw Maeum and Junyoung on the balcony and then walked a way with a contemplative look on his face. At the time I thought they were hinting at him catching feelings for Maeum but there's been no follow up since so now I'm second guessing whether I even saw those scenes correctly??? 😂

I agree there are a number of wordless scenes interspersed throughout the drama and I am beginning to wonder if they are like a webtoon scene. During the end credits we see a webtoon character’s hand flicking through the scene shots like it’s a webtoon so I wonder if they are trying to frame those scenes as if we are reading her daily adventures and the explanations will be tied up later.

oooh that's a great observation actually, the scenes are a bit like they would be in a webtoon!! and good pick up with the hand flicking during the end 'credits' too!!

Regarding this high schoolers scene, to me it's clearly a memory of JunYeong. With the opening episode, when we see him getting ready for work, I thought the woman was his wife, but now I feel the woman is his sister (not only because he called him noona), and that he died and he feels guilty... maybe he held a party at his house with his school friends and failed to listen to noona's phone call? It's clear that when he told Maeum that she reminds him of someone he was talking about his noona, as she was also so fond of webtoons (as seen at the beginning of episode).

I think they try to distinguish between memory and real life with whether he engages in the scene or not. He was clearing up the house in real life and was looking at the party scene when his phone rang. With the memory scenes he doesn’t engage with them in any way. For example he was in the kitchen she came in he didn’t look up or chat, she was on the balcony he didn’t turn around and wave back.

The only scene he engaged with her was the opening scene of episode 7, and the cinematography already told us that was a flashback.

Yes I was going to say - the bit where he was clearing up all the bottles and stuff is what threw me, especially since he said he doesn't drink. And he didn't looked shocked or annoyed at the mess, just started cleaning on autopilot. Maybe he drinks at home to help him sleep or not think about his sister (?) but then again there were a lot of bottles and snack packets on the table, so it does feel more like someone was partying rather than it being the result of a solo drinking session hmmm.....

about your last sentence/question, I can assure you that at least you're not alone on that, I saw them too :)
however, while the balcony/rooftop scene made me quite sure about jihyung's catching feeling (just a bit) to Maeum, all the 'hinted' expression of him toward Maeum this week made me second guessing that it could also trying to hint that he (painfully) remembered his younger days with his ex? I belive he was also started from co-workers with his ex and become couple after spending days/months together, then for me jihyung's expression could be interpreted 2 ways:
a. seeing maeum with jonyoung together made him believe the rookies are on course to become a couple since that what happened with him and that assist editor in their younger days, and the memory of his ex is not all pleasant to him

b. jinhyung caught feeling to maeum, but since he thought the rookies are attracted to each other then he stopped track and trying conceal his feeling (but well, not really doing good job on that since I can see it lol).

i don't want to compare this drama to the japanese original (which I love), but i think the kdrama is standing up on its own, and i would love this still even without (obvious) romance and materialised lovelines.
so quite different to you, i'm fine if the hinted scenes of feelings between the characters didn't get lovelines follow up, as long as it didn't make the story draggy or such, i'm just happy that this drama is enjoyable to me so far, it seems something to be celebrated these days :D

It’s good to meet someone else who has watched the Japanese version. Unfortunately, I missed it when it was freely available to binge watch so will be watching the last two episodes when they air this week. Although they have a few storyline elements consistent across both dramas there is definitely enough difference to see them as distinct dramas. I will be discussing Sleepeeer hit on my fan wall.

Fun pair of episodes, and I definitely felt the heartbreak of the assistant not making it after 10 years.

I hadn’t picked up on it before, but I guess the woman who I figured was the girlfriend/wife of Joon-young is actually dead. Looking back on it, they never interacted and I just assumed it wasn’t the point of the scene. Suspected as much in episode 7 finally, but then the small (I assume) flashback of Joon-young crying in front of the Charnel house kind of clinched it. I’m enjoying the characters, and it’s still an easy happy pill watch every week.

I was so happy the episode started with her looking happy and we saw them interact I thought finally we get the story and then I waited and waited and waited for no answer just a quick scene of him crying. So disappointing that they are stretching this storyline out.

Agreed she is his older sister, the mystery is why do we see them not interacting! Is her presence in the house the reason we see her and he doesn’t or is she a ghost?

Yes she is definitely dead I meant presence as in memories rather than physical presence. I want to know about his parents too as her presence is the only one we see so her significance seems to outweigh theirs.

I also presumed it was his sister who has since died. It's taking quite a while to develop this arc though, and it would be good to move it on.

Thank you, @solstices, for the weecap! I'm loving the changes in Joon-young. The way he ran over when Pomme called him about the 'peeping tom' and worried about her. I love Ma-eum's mom and how she helps her daughter but still explaining to her how Father feels that Ma-eum decided to be honest to her Dad.

I was worried that Dae Ryuk's work was going to be stolen. And that Dong Hee did it. It would have ruined his reputation beyond repair.

Dong Hee's crying scene was really good. Had me crying with him. I felt bad for the guy and I could totally relate. He has a better mindset now that he is moving to a new stage in life, maybe finding a different goal. It was touching that Dae Ryuk saw what his intention was with his webtoon too. ♥

The story made a great, unexpected parallel with Ma Eum wanting Dong Hee to keep going and Ma Eum's Dad wanting her to go back to judo.

Hye Mi is awful. Less of her please. I actually thought she was gunning for Dae Ryuk when she remarked about an artist not fitting with Neon's usual types.

Losing Kang Nam and ending Gumiho Princess would be a huge blow for the team, but EP 8 felt a wee bit draggy with his story covering most of it. On one hand, he is a major artist who is crucial to their sales and popularity. But on the other hand, I didn't believe in him leaving Neon. Or at least not any time soon. So it was pretty predictable that he would stay. At least this plot didn't take more than one episode to cover? XD

They're gradually revealing more of Dae Ryuk's painful past. I'd really like to see Dae Ryuk get help for his trauma soon. Professional help with therapy.

Oh Yoon mussing up his hair wildly was funny. His vehement order that his webtoon will not be terminated early makes me wish he can turn it around. His PD Doo Hee is not helpful.

Yes the level of PTSD from childhood trauma and bereavement that Daeryuk is experiencing is having a significant impact on his daily functioning and quality of life and he needs professional help asap. I hope they show that rather than using his drawing of the webtoon as a form of self guided Art therapy which would be the equivalent of the love conquers all storyline that is the preferred healing trope used for highly traumatised adults.

I found sad that Dong-hee had to have his own webtoon to be recognized. He did an important work for Writer Baek’s, he was important for the team. But it doesn't have value if he didn't debut. But I guess it's better for his selfesteem to quit completely and find something else like Ma-Eum.

Dae-ryuk's past looks very dark. At least, now he's not alone anymore to confront it.

I like how the rookies are treated in this team. They are given new tasks but not let alone to do it. They always get a feedback. Seok Ji-Hyung and Jang Man-Cheol know their strengths and use them.

So Goo Jun-Yeong doesn't live with a ghost, because I guess ghost don't do party... But he's clearly ignoring her and I think he will regret it.

I like that this show leaves some small hints, barely a minute screentime for some mysteries... it is intriguing. I definitely think the mystery lady in Jun Young's life must be a ghost or a memory. She is dressed in the same white outfit , in every scene, except the opening scene in Ep 7 when she was reading a webtoon(and did he call her Noona, I couldn't tell). And that scene with party at his home - she does not seem to be part of that too, (and again, still in that same white dress). As to the party, it seems he is renting his place out ? there seems to be some numerous messages asking if his place is available.

Oh wow where did you see the messages about renting the place out? An Airbnb rental scheme as a money making enterprise would be a great explanation as I don’t see how he can afford to run a home with staff on his salary. If the place is being rented then surely he would hire staff to do the clean up and would do it at times when it wouldn’t inconvenience him so coming home to a tip wouldn’t work. Also unless they pay for the clean up as part of the hiring costs aren’t the rules you clear up before leaving or lose part of the deposit.

Ok, I admit I might be completely mistaken and I probably just jumped to conclusions, but in ep 7, around 27:40 something, after talking to Director Heo, JY scrolled through several messages on his phone. The subtitle said : "can I stay there Monday to Wednesday?".. then he clicked on one of the messages, and a male voice over said " Is it available Friday and Saturday?" - at first I thought it was Dir Heo's voice, but definitely not him. Then towards the end of that same episode where there are people partying, the camera first panned from the doorway to the window, then when he got the call and he turned around, there's the white lady all of a sudden at the doorway. (by the way, none of the party girls have the same hair length and dress in the earlier shot)

Thank you ☺️I am going to look back as you said as it did seem weird he had someone in the house drinking so much but it felt like he lived alone in a big empty house.

Also I need to check her clothes as didn’t register the clothes being the same in each shot as I just registered she looks so sad in all those shots yet the opening scene where she so clearly loved that webtoon she was full of life and energy.

This may also explain why he didn’t want to read or engage with the webtoons initially as maybe they reminded him too much of her.

@solstices thank you for a great weecap. I agree that looking at these two episodes as showing different perspectives on what happens when we lose sight of our why and was a good background for the scenes of our rookie’s growth. That dawning of this must be how it is for dad was such a sad moment but I love how this family interact and support each other. However, we saw how when one sibling has an exceptional skill that is time consuming, the other sibling perceives the parents use of time as representative of their distribution of love. This perception is treated as hard evidence and resentment builds as they feel hard done by as the less valued/loved child of the family. We see how this plays out in her determination to intensify her attack on the webtoon artist because she is gaining attention from other people who feel powerful when criticising others.

I loved the humour of the Gangnam storyline but his immature girlfriend is proper getting on my nerves. She was upset that his new company won’t use their staff to play hide and seek with her.😬 Was he not doing that job when they met? The nature of his work style means his availability is not going to change and with two projects on the go it’s going to mean he will be under more pressure. She needs a younger version of Eojin who is well organised and has banked several episodes. She is part of the problem; she distracts Gangnam which messes with his head and therefore it takes him longer to reach his deadlines. We saw when he was focused he finished in good time. It’s great she is independently financially stable but what was her attraction to him and what does she do with her time? I don’t think this actress looks the part in the Japanese version she is a young ex model so it fits better that she acts like a spoiled child used to lots of attention and now she isn’t working she is bored.

The insertion of PPL in this drama is really bad because the products don’t fit and every episode it is the equivalent of pausing for a proper advert. I almost wonder if it’s intentional to get some kind of alternative award for bad PPL. They would definitely get this years top prize. The car Donghee’s uncle picked him up in I assume was not PPL as they chose a white blob so the audience would not be distracted and could focus on the moment. It was great to see the joy of finally having someone get the message behind the story. I like that it was the very person he had dismissed as having no value that was the only one who could see it.

With Pomme’s case why would she invite people she doesn’t know into her house just because they are her work colleagues? There is no reason not to believe one of them could be an obsessed fan using work as a cover to get closer to her. I suspect it’s an ex boyfriend or a fan/anti fan. She is rich so she could hire someone to assess and determine the right kind of security to protect and offer peace of mind while awaiting the police investigation. Also has anyone in...

Also has anyone in the company been informed of the situation or is Junyeong holding the info to himself. Seems to be a habit as the two PD’s are rushing off to sort the Daelyug situation without updating their seniors. There is clearly no lone worker policies in place despite staff wandering around the office and seeing artists at random times of day and night.

How long are they going to stretch out the storyline on the mystery woman…

Like many other beanies, I liked the parallelism between DongHee and Maeum conflicts, and I loved how Maeum recognised the conflict that means wanting someone to go on doing something and letting that person chose what they want because that is what she did.

But that is all. I mean, I love Maeum enthusiasm, but she has just been doing this job for a couple of months (even if it's six, which is not); she is a webtoon lover and knows a lot about them, but it doesn't make her a PD. I know this is dramaland, and things have another timing, but it's too unrealistic. She could give DongHee his opinion as a reader but she's struggling with her job. Take for instance the scene when JiHyung asks her repeatedly to explain him what is Peeve and she can't explain... she knows by instinct why she loves the webtoon, but can't explain why, well, explaining why is what a PD must do. Same as I am a drama lover but being into drama industry is totally different. Even writing recaps is not the same as watching a drama, am I wrong?

I was also a bit sad about DongHee letting go his dream. I can totally understand he decides not to go on with his dream of debuting (same way last week SeulA was struggling whether to continue it or not), but I can't understand why he must quit the world that makes him happy. I mean, if you are an artist (because he is, even if he hasn't debuted), and if he is earning a living, why returning home to run a restaurant (I am assuming this since when we saw him talking to his mum on the phone it seemed she was serving tables) and not try and work in something related to you passion. I can understand having some time free, but not all writers get to publish a book, or all painters have their works in museums. There are alternatives, but we are shown just how he quits everything because he sabotages himself from actually being successful. I'm not ok with this take, although I agree it fits the character, as he will always chose to be miserable.

As regarding JiHyung and his offer, it's clear he will reject it, something that makes no sense in a competitive society like Korean, where you worth only how successful you are. He will reject a higher position and salary out of heart, specially knowing that he is in sinking boat.

Anyway, and despite this comment, that seems a bit harsh, I'm really enjoying the drama. And can I say I'm absolutely in love with the amazing OST? Such a mood setter!!

Really enjoyed these episodes despite them taking a darker turn this week. Is JY trying to play both sides though? He hasn't really committed one way or another and did give info to Chief Heo. And his advice to Ma Eum is telling - one can display a completely different exterior to what one is thinking - he knows himself well. Unlike MaEum who wears her heart on her sleeve, which isn't always a positive thing in the workplace either.
I love how he is hyper aware of MaEum and now has her thinking he has a girlfriend! He'll need to remedy that quickly.
Other highlights for me were Artist Nam chasing his gumiho creation round the shopping mall, brilliant and the moment Feeb started coming out of the laptop for Dong Hee, fantastic visually.
Big thumbs up for this week!

At the moment, I am most interested in Sin Dae-lyug and his childhood. The little flashbacks so far give clues to the causes of trauma.

In the last episodes it looked like Jun-yeong was developing a romantic interest in Ma-eum. At least for now, however, this interest does not seem to be mutual, seeing how happy Ma-eum is that Jun-yeong supposedly has a girlfriend.

Double cliffhanger just as our webtoon department is about to turn the corner. Business is ruthless and underhanded. Artists are flighty, insecure and born doubters or self-defeatists.

Dong-Hee's story conclusion was realistic. Ten years is a long time working to start your career. It was sad that he realized after quitting that only Shin understood his work. Ironically, they could have become good friends.

The Youngtoon hunt for artists is not illegal or unethical - - - it is business reality in a highly competitive industry. I thought the Pomme story arc was out of place and rushed to a non-conclusion.

We get a glimpse of Jun-yeong's roomate (sister?) and the fact that his parents are away. But there is still an eerie distance. We also get a further glimpse into Shin's abusive childhood - - fear and dominion is the demon is head that is pouring out into his drawings. I wonder if the writer is setting up the story to contrast the bright and cheerful light (Ma-eum) with the evil, tortured darkness inside the artists.

I’m still not thrilled at the training/development for the rookies or the Crap PD, but this week was better in terms of the management team actually being more effective. Good counter for their star cartoonist, better coaching for the baseball artist (though I do understand her reluctance to introduce a romance for the female lead). I would’ve moved Pomme to a hotel and certainly informed the company and police, though - that’s a blackmail jackpot, if not an escalated personal threat.

I don’t completely understand why it’s impractical to be an artist’s assistant as a career if you’re good at it. There’s dreaming and there’s a honed skill - why give away your laptop? But the overall character arc was good.

I have no idea where the Manhwa Witch arc is headed. Does she make money from that? And… how do you not recognize your sister’s lower face!? Youngtoon deputy is bad news - she can offer to artists but the way she’s simultaneously approaching the Neon team is creepy.

All in all the show is still interesting, even though there are some head-scratching gaps.

Forgot to mention the Subway PPL! Been a long time since I've seen it! XD Is it back in kdramas or has it been there in recent ones?

I just realized that the show is now relying on hallucinations/illusions/delusions to move the story line forward.

Okay, I'm about to give up. I really, really wanted to enjoy this drama. Love the leads and most of the supporting but I'm on the Cliff of Drop. Understand the whole tortured artist theme but I guess I'm just not up for any more angst.
Always come and check out Beanie reactions and I am happy everyone who enjoys this drama is enjoying. Maybe I call it a pause.

It’s always good to know when to call it and like you said a weecap and comments section read through with refreshments can be way more effective stress release than hate watching a drama. Time is precious and in this day and age we don’t need entertainment to be adding to dissatisfaction levels. Hope you have other dramas to bring joy.
