Cheer Up: Episodes 5-6

This week we investigate what it means to be a team, from group bonding activities to calling it quits when you just can’t hang. The Theia teammates who stick it out grow closer — particularly our leads — even as a key player in our mystery materializes with the possibility of tearing them apart.

Cheer Up Episodes 5-6

We sprint back into the action with Jung-woo reaching the control room behind the stage and finding no one there. Without evidence that someone dropped the light over Hae-yi’s head, everyone keeps telling him it was just an accident. But it sets him off worrying about Hae-yi and feeling responsible for her as team captain (at least, that’s his official excuse).

When Hae-yi gets totally trashed at a team drinks night, both Sun-ho and Jung-woo want to help her get home. This leads to all three in the backseat of a cab with Hae-yi lolling from one man’s shoulder to the other, until she perks up enough to start enacting cheer routines and smacks them both in the face. Sun-ho finds it funny, but Jung-woo looks irritated — making me wonder (and it’s not the first time) how she doesn’t like Sun-ho even a little.

Cheer Up Episodes 5-6

The drama is still toying with the love triangle, even as Hae-yi has made it obvious where her crush lies. When she and Jung-woo get partnered in class and have to talk about their ideal marriage partners, Hae-yi says money is the most important thing in a marriage while Jung-woo says it’s love. We later see, though, that she’s written her ideal mate is exactly Jung-woo: a leader who’s warm-hearted once you get to know him. Jung-woo writes his ideal mate is someone that makes him smile, thinking of Hae-yi (but I can count on one hand the number of times he’s smiled in this drama). Meanwhile, Sun-ho smiles at everything she does.

Jung-woo does start opening up a little when Theia goes on a team field trip. He and Hae-yi are late to join and she sleepily snuggles up to him on the bus ride there. His heart skips a beat and he worries about an arrhythmia, haha. It’s night when they get off the bus and Jung-woo is pointing out constellations, causing them to hold hands briefly when he guides her hand in the direction of a specific star. In these scenes, I get a sense that Jung-woo likes Hae-yi, but as the squad captain he feels it would be inappropriate to show it.

Cheer Up Episodes 5-6

Just as Jung-woo is bandaging up a scrape Hae-yi gets while running for the field trip food, Sun-ho stumbles on them sitting close. Sun-ho’s holding an umbrella for the downpour that suddenly starts — hoping for Hae-yi to join him underneath — and we wind up with the trio cramming in to share it instead. It’s a funny image, probably my favorite this week, but I’m put off by the constant bickering between Jung-woo and Hae-yi, which the drama is using to show their feelings for each other. Sun-ho can’t take it either and leaves them to argue alone under the umbrella.

During the field trip, pieces of the mystery puzzle start to come together. When Sun-ho and Hae-yi are walking after dark near some train tracks, Sun-ho spots someone taking pictures from under a train. He chases the guy and it’s someone from the broadcasting club, who is also on a group project with Hae-yi in one of her classes. Hae-yi says not to worry about it because she has the guy’s phone number, and Sun-ho lets him go. (I’m getting a little tired of Hae-yi shrugging off everything that happens. Rather than seeming happy-go-lucky she’s starting to strike me as an idiot.)

Cheer Up Episodes 5-6 Cheer Up Episodes 5-6

The broadcasting club photographer posts his pics on a website, asking if one of the Theia members will die this year. The site contains some backstory for the missing member of the team, LEE YOO-MIN (Park Bo-yeon) — who we’ve also come to know was Jung-woo’s first crush (who, according to Ha-jin, he’s never gotten over). Yoo-min disappeared two years ago after a light fell on her during a rehearsal, and it’s rumored she died. Now, the website points out, there are parallels between that time and this time. They’re so similar, in fact, it seems someone is trying to execute the prophecy.

Most of the team quits after seeing the info on the website. Sun-ho also decides to quit and move on to a new girlfriend since he has no chance with Hae-yi. Then, Yoo-min appears, totally out of thin air, and won’t say anything about where she’s been the last two years. Jung-woo is so happy to have her back, Hae-yi feels ignored and jealous. It seems she does have a reason to be wary of Yoo-min, though, because somehow everything she says sounds like an underhanded threat (not that Hae-yi would pick up on that).

Cheer Up Episodes 5-6

When Jung-woo and Cho-hee find out (via the website) that Hae-yi has been receiving threatening texts, they are upset and Jung-woo is much more worried than before. The rest of the story about Yoo-min is that, like Hae-yi, she was also locked in the storage room. At the time, she was being bullied for dating a freshman on the squad (and giving him “preferential treatment”). So, all the occurrences were chalked up to bullying. The falling light was assumed to be an accident from a wornout cable. But later, we learn that Yoo-min was also receiving texts, saying “break up with him.”

This parallels the texts that Jung-woo is receiving now, telling him to kick Hae-yi off the team. In this case, it seems they are coming from one of the current Theia freshman — who knows about Hae-yi’s one-month contract to get paid for being on the squad. He tells her she has to either quit or not take the money. Otherwise, he will go public about the contract. After a lot of back and forth with herself about what she truly values, Hae-yi decides to tear up the contract and stay on the team. (Good. Maybe we can have less arm waving and more backflipping in future routines.)

Cheer Up Episodes 5-6 Cheer Up Episodes 5-6

At another Theia pub night, Hae-yi goes missing from the bathroom and Jung-woo runs all over the neighborhood to find her. When he does, she says she lost her phone (no idea why she’s outside) and Jung-woo is so worried and relieved that he hugs her. Hae-yi takes this as a very romantic moment, eyes wide, wondering whether or not to hug him back. The epilogue shows us that Yoo-min is the one with Hae-yi’s phone, creepily reading her messages in the dark.

So, I know that Jung-woo is the lead here but I just don’t feel the chemistry. With the hug at the end, I feel like since Yoo-min just came back into his life he’s terrified of something similar happening again and that Hae-yi will disappear too. Plus, he’s responsible for the team now. If Hae-yi goes missing on his watch, he’ll feel even worse. The hug seems like it happened in that context. On the other hand, after Sun-ho quits, he rejoins the team, and breaks up with his new girlfriend, because it will be more fun to be there with Hae-yi, even if he knows he doesn’t have a shot with her. How is he not the obvious choice here?

Cheer Up Episodes 5-6

While I’m not super stoked on the OTP, these episodes give us a few new possible pairings that might be more exciting. My favorite among them is IM YONG-IL (Kim Shin-bi) with his adorable crush on Cho-hee. Until now, Yong-il has mostly followed around Sun-ho and I didn’t think much about him. During the field trip, he gets on stage with Hae-yi and Sun-ja, and the three dance to Twice’s Cheer Up. The song may be on the nose but man is their dance cover smile-inducing.

Later, Yong-il sticks up for Cho-hee when someone is saying awful things behind her back. He also supports her when her rugby captain ex-boyfriend is threatening her — and films it when she beats the crap out of the ex after he slaps her. Cho-hee tells Yong-il not to like her but he’s already head over heels. And, truthfully, so am I. I’ve liked Cho-hee since the beginning and Yong-il is just too cute crushing on her (gotta love that accent). He’s now at the top of my list of all the men in this show.

Cheer Up Episodes 5-6

One thing I’m really loving about this drama is the way it handles interactions between female characters. With Hae-yi, Cho-hee, Ha-jin, and Sun-ja we’ve got a bunch of strong personalities. And yet they’ve all gotten along with each other right from the get-go. There’s no in-fighting or competitiveness and, even better, they all support each other in whatever comes up. The easy friendships and small acts of kindness are just so lovely to watch. If I have one major complaint with these episodes it’s that there’s not enough Ha-jin — she’s such a rockstar.

And speaking of getting along, we got a scene this week of camaraderie between Hae-yi’s mom and Sun-ho’s mom — where the two polish off three quarters of a bottle of whisky outside a convenience store and reminisce about old times. While I’m still not sure where the show is taking us with this, I did like watching the two laughing together instead of the same old fighting and one-upmanship.

lol I'm the opposite, I'm all in on the OTP and fast forward every second Sun Ho appears. Jung Woo has spent time with Hae Yi, comforted her when she was hurt by opening up about himself, and treats her like a human being. Sun Ho has a crush because...??? I have no idea. It honestly feels like she's some kind of manic pixie dream girl to him and he should really work on getting a personality before getting a girlfriend (also screw him for blatantly using that girl and dumping her over the phone because he decided to keep pursuing Hae Yi).

The bickering's getting annoying, but I don't think it's supposed to mean they're in love. Jung Woo is super reserved but we see him open up to Hae Yi both with serious things (growing up fatherless, his romanticism) and petty, childish things. She's the only one who challenges him and pushes his boundaries (to be fair, she kind of does that for SH so I guess that could be why he likes her. I dunno, I really don't like him and it may not be rational lol).

With you on this one. I like our OTP and accept their bickering as part of Jungwoo's becoming comfortable with Haeyi. He's so uptight and reserved that being bickery actually shows he's opening up and trusting her. Their back and forth under the umbrella felt like he was ceasing to be careful around other people in the vicinity (Sunho) which is a step forward.

There are loads of holes all over this one, but it's right in sync with my mood at the minute and I unashamedly love watching it. Bae Inhyuk always makes me smile so that helps :)

I, too, fully support the OTP and can understand very well why Hae-yi is not interested in Sun-ho. At the latest, when he got himself a girlfriend out of spite, only to dump her again, it became clear that Hae-yi's judgement of his character was correct.
I myself once experienced something similar and for me it was confirmation that I was absolutely right in my decision.

Totally with you re the OTP. I've been rooting for them since opening week. Zero SLS here. I also believe that the actor playing Sun Ho is a little green, and that doesn't help my wanting to back him as a candidate. That said, the entire squad is delightful, and hopefully they'll all have HEAs.

every word you said!

sunho annoys me so much and I dont like how the drama puts him watching her scenes so much lol how is he always.... everywhere lol they have no chemistry and I think the actor is just too bland to act this character, who, imo, should be a charismatic playboy.

Agreed. OTP also seems to sincerely like each other as people and the bickering is simply the thing they do for fun. Haeyi likes Jung Woo's sensitive side, at the same time she makes fun of him for being a romantic. Jung Woo criticizes Haeyi for being materialistic, but appreciates her having such clear goals.

Sun ho has a crush on Hae Yi because she is pretty and has been rejecting him for ages. If Hae Yi actually dated him, he would have broken up with her by phone in two episodes max. At this point, his feelings might run slightly deeper, but at its core, their relationship would have still never worked out. Hae Yi puts a lot of effort in everything she does and she has this desperation to make something out of herself. Meanwhile, Sun Ho had a clear road to go for his whole life. He lived in so much comfort that he never needed to even think what he actually wants or who he is. Those two are just essentially different people.

But shouldn't a rugby captain be harder to beat up? A chess club captain would have been easier to believe.

@dramaddictally thank you for the weecap. You landed where I did with this weeks episodes. I don’t think the main couple should be the couple they would be great as friends.

The editing on this show makes me lose confidence that we are seeing the full version of events. Prime example, when Mr ‘Don’t tarnish the cheer squad for me’ was edited to look like the one who grassed up Haeyi for lying about choosing work over practice. I now think there is something significant that we didn’t see that led to Haeyi dropping her phone and wandering away from the bar leading to people having to look for her 👉’(no idea why she’s outside)’ exactly my thoughts.

Also you find something random in your locker, why is your first thought ‘oh someone put it there by mistake’ and not ‘how has someone gained access to my locker and why’. Everyone is on red alert yet neither Haeyi or her friend thinks to mention this or the random female student loitering in the practice room.

I am confused how the girl friend who got dumped was aware of Sunho’s reputation yet was happy to sign up to be with him but still got upset when he acted as described.

The karaoke song with the dance routine on the trip was my favourite part of the show.

Well, I think it might be a bit tough if there was too many egos on the cheer team, considering that they're at the bare minimum membership. Also, I think they won't be doing backflips -- I happened to see a video of Yonsei university's Akaraka (sp?) pep rally, and it's virtually the same as the joint pep rally, except they also have guest stars, usually idols.

Still, all of that cheering does take skill, I also just watched a video on YouTube where the cast is learning all of the cheers to the songs, and it's very difficult work. Even Jang Gyuri gets tired, but she's still super cute, and super fun to watch in this show. I didn't expect her to be such a badass but I enjoyed her scenes.

I actually look forward to more of their performances, and maybe new songs to cheer to. It appears that they have been working on a new song and it should be entertaining!

I don't really like the FL and therefore don't understand why 2 men will fall for her so easily. I don't mind bubbly energy kind FL but it really doesn't work with her. I don't really find her different elements of character connect well. She wants to be a billionaire working in security but she's studying theology? It means she will help against cult members? But overall, I really need her to close her mouth when she's eating and not talk in the same time....

I found the mystery so useless. It doesn't bring anything to the story except making Jung-Woo to be worried for Hae-Yi. They could focus on so many different things instead.

She told Jung-woo that she chose any major to go to Yonhee because just graduating from one of the SKY universities puts her at an advantage compared to a business administration degree at a lesser school. That's why she joined the investment club to gain securities experience.

I still don't think the link between theology, business and security is very clear... I understand that the College name is important to find a job but theology looks useless, law or economics or computer science seem more adapted to find a job after.

I guess maybe she didn't get the scores in the school graduating exam to get into a business / Econs degree, so picked whatever she got at Yeonhee, which was theology. If I were a writer of the show, I'd use this situation better as a plot device, but it's not really being explored.

But unlike you, I love the FL. She has crazy energy, and she's the primary reason that draws me to this show every week.

There is no link. She'll be like other people who get a job in a field unrelated to their majors, and their degrees become useless.

Majoring in theology was a strategic decision. I'm sure that she would've majored in finance (investment securities) if she could've, but it was too competitive for her to get in, so she chose the easiest major possible as long as she can graduate from Yonhee.

tbh i didn't even know theology existed till I watched this show (you can imagine my shock when I googled it) and I still dont get why she chose that major

The reason why I don't ship the OTP is because I find Jung-woo's story boring. The Yoo-min mystery, boring. (Jung-woo and Yoo-min have no chemistry either.) That Soo-il sunbae who stole team funds and keeps fighting Jung-woo, boring. Jung-woo's Busan satoori restaurant owner mom, boring.

Unlike the freshmen who are fun. Obviously, Hae-yi and Sun-ja are fun, but Yong-il danced to Twice's "Cheer Up," and the four of them eating lunch together is fun. Even Hae-yi's and Sun-ho's 'drug' addict moms are fun. I just know that when Hae-yi and Jung-woo start dating, he's going to turn her boring, and I'm dreading it.

I realize that I'm alone in this opinion, but I like Hae-yi's ex-boyfriend Jae-hyuk the best. During the Medical Students' Night, I wished that they could work it out. I sympathize with Jae-hyuk whenever Hae-yi dismisses that he's legitimately worried about her, like when he told her he didn't want her to get hurt over Sun-ho and to drop out of the cheering squad because of the messages. I'm glad that Hae-yi acknowledged that she was wrong to publicly humiliate him and made up for it by pretending to be his girlfriend. Though I wished she had dressed up. Their high school couple flashbacks were sweet.

But if we're talking about the top man in this show, then Hae-yi's younger brother Jae-yi hands down. Who's bullying my Jae-yi? My guess is the call from Mom causing Hae-yi to drop her phone was about him. I was offended when Jung-woo asked, "You have a brother?" when he literally met Jae-yi the night that he and Sun-ho took Hae-yi home drunk.

I can't believe that Min-jae has such a stick up his butt when he has no rhythm. He gave Yoo-min the stink eye too. I felt sorry for Sun-ho when he gave Hae-yi the umbrella and ran in the rain, but he has no chance. Thank God Cho-hee is a hard-ass because she and her rugby captain ex-boyfriend were in an abusive relationship.

A big thanks for weecapping this drama, @Dramaddictally!

Gosh, you and the fast forward button must have been best friends this week 🤣
I do agree that the freshmen have a good bond and add fun into the show all except man with glasses who needs to accept that as much as he loves Cheer leading it doesn’t love him; he sucks at it. He reminds me of a second lead determined to hold on to the lead even when they have rejected him.

I've never actually fast-forwarded a drama before. I'm too afraid that I'll miss something important, so I just watch while complaining the whole time. 😅

Min-jae does suck at it and also needs to accept that if not for the prophecy, he never would've even made his beloved cheerleading squad. He's only in by default because no one else tried out.

Cheers bar owner Young-woong is the funnest. Young-woong and Hae-yi's scenes together are gold.

I like the OTP on this show. They are the reason I am tuning in and the cheer squad. What I dont like is the mystery and prophecy. I wish they would show more competition with other cheer squads and their prep for new songs.
I also like Soo Il and his crush on Cho Hee. Poor guy is already head over heels so I do hope she gives him a chance.
I also like Hae Yi and Sun Ho's moms. It looks like they need the friendship since they both look lonely.
I do not like Jae Hyuk but I am glad that they have talked it out. Hae Yi is right, he may like her but is ashamed of her background. That alone can cause resentments if they stay together which can snowball to bigger issues down the line. Might as well nip it in the bud since he doesnt look like changing his thoughts on the class divide.
As for SunHo, i still don't like him for Hae Yi. It feels like his story arc is what his ex gf said. He is bound for heart break after finding out love for himself.
Min Jae is a bit intense with his need to be in Yonhee's cheer squad when he doesnt look like naturally good in it. I wonder what drives him to choose it anfld why he gave Yoo Min the evil eye.
There is something off with Yoo Min and I wonder what she is up to.
As for Jung Woo, i dont think he still likes Yoo Min the same way like Hae Yi thought. I think he is in a bind realizing that he cares for Hae Yi but cant do anything about it because of the cheer squad rules and he has a lot on his plate.
Its obvious that Hae Yi likes Jung Woo because of who he is. Despite their contadicting ideas on dating, I think they can make it work. They do not need the grandiose display of affections but just need to find time for each other, celebrate important days together and work to ensure good communication will be important.

I love that too. That alone proves what Jung Woo said that they do not need money to date. Just spend time together and care for each other. Enjoy the simple things life can offer together. They are still college students so might as well enjoy every minute they can with the person they like.

I love the Hae Yi with Jungwoo a little more than my cutie second lead SunHo. I know the pain of an unrequited love , but i feel like the main leads really belong together. Their conversations, their bickering and them talking up what they feel like ,all of this seems so right and fit so well. The last hug had so much chemistry, even though it is a more of concerning hug from Jung Woo as the team head, but that was heart fluttering.

Yoo Min has come back again with some hidden plan but i feel like she is here to unravel the mystery. I hope she aint bad.

I have to say I'm on team SH here too. I'm not feeling it with the OTP. And seriously, why is no one reporting anything to the police? Even the assault by the rugby captain? Is this really OK?
Quite a few of the ex boyfriends in this show are toxic.
