Premiere Watch: Call It Love

Time slot: Wednesdays
Broadcaster: Disney+
Genre: Romance, melodrama, revenge
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: We’ve had a string of melancholy dramas lately, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t high time we had another story about revenge plans thwarted by the unexpected complication of falling in love. Lee Sung-kyung plays our wronged heroine, while Kim Young-kwang is the recipient (or not!) of her revenge scheme. Being a big fan of both actors, I can’t wait to see them as leads here.

Even more interesting, though, is the attention PD Lee Kwang-young has paid to capturing the feel of the script. She described the drama as having “a reddish sunset glow,” and that this aesthetic decision was all about landing the tone of the story — viz., expressing the emotions of the characters as they interact with the world around them. It’s also noted that this is not a drama that focuses on the actual carrying out of revenge (ahem, The Glory), but is more about the solace and hope that are possible even when you’re wronged and hurting.

TL;DR: Healing romance melo, Lee Sung-kyung, Kim Young-kwang, reddish sunset glow

Yay! I can watch this (when work and life let up). Please, please let there be no serial killers/other hideous tropes in this. PD Lee could you maybe reassure us? 감사합니다.

Fingers crossed there are no serial killers, evil CEO's, trucks of doom, fated childhood connection, etc, etc.

Fated childhood connections I can deal with. And, here they do have an adolescent connection given the step-relationship.
But not the others. Nope. Nope. Nope.

Oh I didn't realize! I thought Hulu only got a hold of them after they finished airing! Thanks for the info!

Romantic melo is my favorite genre and "Interest of Love" didn't quite hit the spot for me, so I'm very much looking forward to this one and its red haze.

I definitely had questions about the red tinge to the trailer. Nice to see an explanation for that. I'm interested in this one even though accessing Disney+ dramas is such a hassle. Even when I can find them on Hulu the subs are always mis-timed.

I agree that Hulu is the worst with subtitle timing. Plus, I always find it a struggle to remember how to turn on subtitles in the first place. I wish there was a way to have it default to subtitles like Netflix does for me.

It defaults to English subs for me, can't remember how. The series that are also dubbed in English, I can't watch them even though English, sadly, is my only language.

Really really really hope "reddish sunset glow" ≠ pink filter.
Can we call Kim Young Kwang's styling retro?

I think I will pass.

Not sure about the production. I'm not a big fan of the main actors, the posters sent very different vibes and the pink filter was too much in the teaser.

Disney+ doesn't pick the best ones...

Another drama I will miss because it is Disney+. I realize that Hulu might give me a work around, but I am less than enamored of Hulu.

It's on Hulu. And it's pink.

Very, very pink.

What were they thinking? Flashback scenes to the FL's childhood are in a normal color range and it's such a huge relief to my eyes, but 90% of the first two episodes are set in the present PINK day and there is no way I'm going to be able to tolerate it.

Oh man...conflicted. I like the cast, and the idea while kind of cliche could be done well. But then Disney+ and one episode a week...that's gonna be rough.

I'm watching so many dramas right now, a once a week will help me catch up...if I don't go down the C-drama rabbithole.

It looks like Hulu will drop two per week on Wednesdays.

I haven't watched a melo in such a long time. I think I will check this one out.
Also Kim Young Kwang looks great with that hair.
