Premiere Watch: Doctor Cha
by missvictrix
Time slot: Saturday-Sunday
Broadcaster: JTBC
Genre: Comedy, medical
Episode count: 16
Reasons to watch: Uhm Jung-hwa will always have a special place in my heart after Witch’s Romance so many years ago… and now she’s back headlining another drama, after a successful turn in Our Blues last year. In Doctor Cha, she plays our eponymous heroine who’s twenty years a samonim, but left unfulfilled by her life. So, she embarks on a journey of rediscovery and returns to her dream of being a doctor. Except this lands her as a resident at the very same hospital where her husband (Kim Byung-chul) is a high-ranking doctor.
The teasers and promo materials for this drama have been mostly funny, but with a sliver of sweetness — which is a good K-drama recipe, right? There’s nothing like a heroine you want to root for, and there’s something super touching about this story setup, since its message is that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams, you’re never too old, and don’t pay attention to the critics (even when they’re doctors half your age). Take that storyline and add two great actors who don’t hold back with their comedy and set them as sparring spouses, and it’s sure to be a riot.
TL;DR: Uhm Jung-hwa is a housewife-turned-doctor determined to fulfill her dream

As someone in his 60s, I can report that it is indeed sometimes too late to pursue your dreams, and you are often too old. I will be watching to see if that is the case for Dr Cha.

ahhh, to be in our 40s again. what would i do differently...
i'd stay on The Zone Diet (helped me lose 20 pounds which i've gained back). i'd keep playing tennis and going skiing. well, i might pick those up again, just do them very slowly and carefully...
nah, i'll just sit in the lounge and drink a cocktail while watching the tennis tournaments and skiing competitions. who am i kidding?

Dr. Cha can easily be the best show I watched in 2023. Her husband and MIL are absolutely the most despicable characters and I wonder what attracted her to him in the first place. That last scene was hilarious when she uttered her first sentence after recovering from the operation. I am so looking forward to the next episode.
