Ji Chang-wook and Shin Hye-sun Welcome us to Samdalri

Ji Chang-wook, Shin Hye-sun

With tvN’s See You in My 19th Life kicking off this past weekend, busy bee Shin Hye-sun confirmed casting for JTBC’s romance Welcome to Samdalri as her next project – acting opposite Ji Chang-wook (If You Wish Upon Me).

As we can surmise by the title, the drama takes place in the beautiful Samdalri, a small town located on Jeju Island. Here resides our hero Jo Yong-pil (Ji Chang-wook), who works as a local weather forecaster. For his colleagues, Yong-pil is a PR nightmare – always arguing with head office directives and stubbornly sticking to what he believes is the accurate forecast of the day.

But Yong-pil’s passion stems from losing his mother to the sea during a diving accident caused by a weather report miscalculation. In order to prevent the same fate for his beloved townspeople, Yong-pil is determined to be the lookout and safeguard for his hometown.

Although Yong-pil always had a big heart for Samdalri, his once childhood bestie Jo Sam-dal (Shin Hye-sun) had always dreamed of leaving. As soon as she was old enough, she crossed the channel to live in the big city of Seoul, where she dropped her bumpkin name and became known as Jo Eun-hye instead.

Putting her nose to the grindstone, Sam-dal succeeded in gaining fame as a talented fashion photographer. But despite the years it took to build her career, all it took was one incident for everything to come crashing down. The story then sets off with Sam-dal returning to her family home to rest, where she is reunited with her estranged friend.

Directed by PD Cha Young-hoon (Forecasting Love and Weather, When the Camellia Blooms) with scripts penned by Kwon Hye-joo (Hi Bye, Mama!, Go Back Spouses), JTBC’s Welcome to Samdalri is slated to air in the weekend slot later this year.

This sounds promising! Shin Hye Sun is always awesome (and seems to pick good projects), so I'll definitely be checking this out.

So the PD of Forecasting Love and Weather wants
to take on weather forecasting again? I dropped FLaW (love the acronym!) early on so I don't really know how well he did last time.

Anyway I'll tune in for Shin Hye-sun.

I really have no issues with the PD of FLAW, its the writer I have issues with. He's also the PD who helmed When The Camelia Blooms and he seems to know his onions.

I think the PD didn't want to waste all that weather knowledge.

In Shin Hye-sun we trust.
In Ji Chang-wook we…

LOL I love how we are already getting the ML's trauma backstory, spoilers right out the gate and has the drama even started filming yet?

In Ji Chang-wook we…watch Healer again. 👏

I am just now watching Healer (up to Ep. 6) and love the Ji Chang-wook character. Looked him up on MDL and found that this drama will soon air.

Hye-sun, though? Not a favorite, but that won't stop me from putting this on my Watchlist.

On paper, and considering both the main actors and the talent behind the scenes, this sounds fabulous to me.

I am, however, puzzled by the whole conceit of the ML being stubborn about his sense of that day's likely weather. I did watch most of "Forecasting Love" but apparently I retained no actual knowledge about this profession: is a daily forecast a matter of debate? I mean, I know there are some predictive qualities to forecasting the weather, especially a week or so out. But the day of, do meteorologists have different interpretations of whether or not it's going to rain? And I'll reserve judgement until it airs, but on its face, blaming a diving accident on a faulty weather forecast seems . . . misplaced.

There definitely was a whole lot of arguing about the weather in FLAW with the ML being another of those "I intuitively know more than all the scientific calculations done by my female boss" types 🙄. As for the diving accident - they showed how the meteorological bureau determines whether boats can head out in the event of thunderstorms, etc. and the wrong call can be dangerous. I guess we have to watch to know what happened here 😅.

You're opening closed wounds 😂. You don't say. The ML was saucy to the point where I basically tuned him out of my view. My not liking the ML from ep 2 was justified almost every week afterwards.

I dropped it after the 2nd episode because of that, SIGH.

I stayed to the end of FORECASTING LOVE AND WEATHER (2022) (Netflix) not to be confused with the real WEATHER (2020) (PMY, KSJ).
I didn’t buy into the romance which I guess defeats the whole point of the drama but having a story take place in the Korea Meteorological Administration was different and I thought Song Kang handled his role as a sort of know it all young meteorologist well.
What can I say. After his great performance as Chae-rok in NAVILLERA (2021) (particularly the ending of episode 8) I have a soft spot for the guy. (These are the only dramas if his I have seen.)

Shin Hye-sun - our consistent queen with a knack for choosing decent projects

Ji Chang-wook- the exact opposite of the above.

This is definately a "wait and see" type drama.

To me, choosing some questionably good dramas and acting prowess do not go hand in hand. He is a fine actor in my book and does nuance well. So, hopefully this is not a train wreck for either of them.

Oh wow, this sounds like a perfect watch for me, so it’s going on the watch list and hoping no nightmares show up to make it come off. The clash of genres has been driving me mad for a while now with Wish upon me being a great found family healing drama but then having the gangster mash up and toxic wannabe girlfriend/sister zoned vibe.

The male lead does sound like the male lead from Forecasting love and weather who was quite argumentative and was from a backwater but was often right and ended up making it to headquarters because of that.

They are both great actors and I'm curious what dynamic they will create.

The story doesn't excite me much, but I loved Go Back Couple. (And did they choose the PD because of his previous project? 😄)

I love both actors.

They both chose very different roles in their career.

Now, Forecasting Love and Weather was the best Kdrama and the overtop use of weather in the story was tiring. We already got a ML who thinks he knows better about predictions... I hope he won't force everyone in a dangerous mission on the sea to not follow the data at the end...

But I'm happy with the Jeju setting!

Pairing is certainly intriguing if not promising (no dead fish kisses at the very least!), but I've read an article like 5 times yet still don't get what's the story is supposed to be about - two ordinary people with ordinary lives from the same hometown falling in love? That's the plot, right? No kick at all, not even Big Drama Misunderstanding forcing leads apart in the past or serial killer looming in the background? Where's the fun then?

I enjoyed Suspicious Partner so it is a shame that after warming up to JCW I havent watched his dramas since. Or dropped early. but I think, Ji Chang Wook needs to play a more rough character and not be stuck in the smooth soft puppies. I think, when he chooses projects he is afraid to step out of comfort zone. It doesnt hurt to try different things. Maybe he should try a villain. Or a reaper. Or something a bit square.

I consider SUSPICIOUS PARTNER a 16 episode drama drawn out into 20. It was a plod for me.
Of course one of the highlights of SP was the performance of Dong Ha. After SP Dong Ha fulfilled his military obligation. He has been back for awhile. Casting directors, please don’t overlook this guy.

While it clearly is not the same story it seems to have at least some similarity in some of its elements to the very good recent C-drama MEET YOURSELF. But there are significant concept differences as well.

What should seal the deal here for JTBC’s WELCOME TO SAMDALRI is not only leads Shin Hye-sun and Ji Chang Wook but also in the cast is the great ajumma-hacker herself Kim Mi-kyung who will be playing Sam-dal’s (SHS) mother.
I think SAMDALRI will be great. I mentioned in another place that in this drama SHS won’t have to carry the whole load. We know from her great performance in STILL 17 (2018) (Viki US) she can do healing dramas.
The PD not onlybhas FL&W under his belt but also CAMELLIA (2019) and ARE YOU HUMAN TOO? (2018).

O/T. JCW’s character’s deceased mom was one of the famous Jeju Island Haenyo (female divers). If you want a look into the world of haenyo you can do no better than check out the wonderful 2019 historical novel by Lisa See, “The Island of Sea Women: A Novel”.

An alternative novel The mermaid from Jeju by Sumi Hahn might be of interest too and includes some of the history of the time.

Recently the Haenyo were a very significant part of OUR BLUES while Haenyo and a school for teaching them were also major element in WARM AND COZY.

I'm a fan of both actors, so this is exciting news to me. Shin Hye Sun elevates every project she's in and seems to bring out the best in her co-stars, so I'm optimistic.

The only JCW drama from recent years that I watched in its entirety was "The Sound of Magic". I don't like his dramas from the last few years, and I've tried to watch them all. I've read what this drama is supposed to be about, more details than here, and I think the second plot about the FL family might be more interesting than the main story. The main couple is a typical story about a traumatic childhood ML, his former friend, who returns to her hometown after a broken heart and professional disappointment. I especially don't like tropes in dramas: about the love of former childhood friends, about ML's childhood trauma, about FL who, disappointed with her relationship, seeks solace in her old life.
