Premiere Watch: King the Land

Time slot: Saturday-Sunday
Broadcaster: JTBC
Genre: Rom-com
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: Reasons to watch, you ask? The first reason is Junho. The second reason is the drama’s promised quintessential rom-com setup. Between those two things, there is nothing but an open door. We have suffered a long drama drought this year where romances have disappointed, and OTPs have failed to deliver adequate feels, so this drama doesn’t even have to work hard to be the best rom-com of 2023. Not that it still shouldn’t try.

Junho plays our perfect chaebol heir who can’t get his love life together… and then he meets the hotelier who works at his hotel — smile queen Yoon-ah — and it only gets more so. From the drama’s ultra swoony first peek, to the subsequent teasers that revealed the drama’s sense of humor and plot, there isn’t a drama fan out there who isn’t aware King the Land is being sold as the rom-com of the season. And I say, show us what you’ve got, Show!

TL;DR: Junho Junho Junho Junho Junho A tropey rom-com that checks all the boxes

Definitely will be there for both King the Land and See You in My 19th Life (we need combined Premiere Watches), and curious to see if JTBC can continue its ratings dominance.

Because all the titles like "Hotel", "Hotel King", etc have already been used.

“The King Hotel” must have seemed an incredibly absurd and implausible name/title.

That’s my biggest worry - like the typical US trailer: nothing left when you see the real thing.

Legal streaming website for this Kdrama: Netflix

Also on Netflix was See You in My 19th Life.

Junho would’ve been so good (at least I hope) as a vampire. If only he was cast in Heartbeat but OTY got there first.

I'm still holding out hope for crossover cameos, although since they're on different networks and have seemingly no overlap in production teams, it's a faint hope. Maybe they can at least make musical references to each other.

I will be getting up early (7:30 am PDT) to make a cup of coffee and sit down to watch King The Land on Netflix because I can see from the trailers that this is MY type of rom-com.

See you in my 19th Life is an hour earlier, but I'm pretty certain that getting up at 6:30 am is not worth the trouble. Grateful that both are on Netflix.

Omo! I didn't realize they'd be on so early in the morning here in PDT-land! Better get my jammies on. It's going to be early to bed on Fridays for me - at least until I see whether these two shows are worth the watch. 🤞🏼

Junho Junho Junho Junho Junho’ shouldn’t even be crossed out. It’s the only real reason we’re watching. Because even if it’s bad, we’ll forever have Junho in luxurious three-piece suits, Junho shirtless (inevitable), Junho shower scene (obviously), Junho in casual wear (a necessity), Junho in… [insert trope].

That’s all I’m asking for. Well, that and for YoonA to not disappoint me.

“…but can’t seem to get it together in the love department.”

Uhhhh WHAT??!? Have they seen the guy? Any not-lesbian woman would be falling over themselves to be with him, this is just not realistic. I can excuse unrealistic inter-class romance, but I draw the line at “can’t get women” Junho!

The last trailer reminds me a lot What's Wrong With Secratary Kim : the cold ML who is kinda "obsessed" with the FL (jealousy, etc.), the nice and very competent FL, the boss-employee relationship, etc.

Ok. Based on the first ep, it is really mediocre but - at least and it isn’t much - Junho isn’t a hideous screaming chaebol (Eat the Rich!!).

I couldn’t agree more. This was my biggest fear. Junho is so hot that any show he’s in will get viewers, but I’m not a fan of cutesy writing. I’m plowing my way through ep#2 and I’m not seeing an improvement. I’m thinking that if I do end up watching it’ll be for the Junho visuals only.

I got halfway through and quickly realized that watching this right after work was a bad idea! If I'm trying to decompress after a shift, it doesn't help stress levels to experience more workplace toxicity, only this time on my TV screen! I will watch it when I'm off lol. But I enjoyed Junho's scenes quite a bit -- he's a very magnetic actor. And I'm intrigued by his relationship with his sister.

My expectations were already low because of the teasers and first reviews. I have watched the first episode and I haven't liked it. Well, I liked Junho (of course!) and the intro animation.

We know beanies can be kind and forgiving for the visuals. Alas, the visuals are marred for me by the male lipstick! please, please anyone involved in any production team, why mar the beauty? Don't they do some lip test? Same reason i never got to finish The Eternal Monarch and barely survived Hometown chachacha.

Male leads lipstick is hard to watch sometimes. That's something that was way better done in old dramas. If they wore lipstick, the color was very natural.
But nowadays I don't like it at all.

JunHo!! After watching episodes 1&2, I didn't find these setup episodes "cracky" (addictive) but I'm looking forward to how the romance begins. Enough already with the slow-walk shots....
