Kim Dong-joon, Choi Su-jong and the war that must be won

Kim Dong-joon (More Than Friends) is making his post-army dramaland return with none other than the reigning king of sageuk, Choi Su-jong (My Only One) for KBS’s The Goryeo-Khitan War.

To celebrate their 50th anniversary, KBS is pulling out all the stops for this drama, which will dramatize a well-known period of Korean history: the final invasion of the Khitan empire into Goryeo. The story will focus on our two leads: a young king who is in search of a political victory and the survival of his nation, and a veteran general who is determined to keep his country safe from an enemy invasion.

Kim Dong-joon will play the young king Hyeonjong. His reign took place when Goryeo was still establishing itself as a nation-state and he was only the eighth king to ever rule. Choi Su-jong will take on the role of famed general and scholar, Gang Gam-chan who (historical spoiler alert!) led Goryeo to victory against a long and brutal invasion by the Khitan empire.

Ji Seung-hyun (Curtain Call) will join them as Yang Kyu, another famous historical figure who led an elite unit of soldiers during this time period. He led numerous missions against the Khitan and also made a priority of rescuing Goryeo civilians who’d been taken prisoner by the enemy.

Lee Won-jong (Bait) has also been announced as another member of the cast. He will play the part of Gang Jo, a military official who led the coup against Hyeonjong’s predecessor and placed Hyeonjong on the throne. Lee Shi-ah (365: Repeat The Year) will play Queen Wonjeong, the first wife of Hyeonjong (you read that correctly — the man had a lot of wives).

The first teaser drops us straight into the thick of things, with the drums of war beating steadily as soldiers prepare to march. There’s a chase on horseback between the opposing sides, and several battles flash across the screen. Then we finally get a glimpse of the two men at the heart of the drama, Gang Gam-chan and King Hyeonjong. The general looks every inch the statesman-warrior. In contrast, Hyeonjong looks uncertain and lost. The teaser ends with a shot of the king, looking pensive, and in voiceover we hear the general vow, “I will be victorious.”

I will always welcome a non-Joseon sageuk addition to dramaland, especially when we’re getting to see figures who haven’t really been featured in film and TV before. Choi Su-jong always knocks it out of the park when he’s in a sageuk so I’m most curious about how Kim Dong-joon will handle his role. He’s really only been in one other sageuk (not including the doomed Joseon Exorcist in his filmography here) and it’s hard to judge his skills based on his previous projects as sageuk can be such a different beast. Time will tell!

Co-directed by Jeon Woo-sung (Bargain, Your House Helper) and Kim Han-sol (Imjin War 1592), with Lee Jung-woo (The King of Tears Lee Bang-won) writing the scripts, The Goryeo-Khitan War will air on KBS in the Saturday-Sunday timeslot beginning November 4.

I am not sure I want to watch this, but @midnight here comes the Emperor of the Sea as a Goryeo general, and he looks regal!

"Emperor of the Sea" makes me feel old.
I finished it for Chae Shi-ra and Song Il-kook.

And I finished it for Soo-ae, who I viewed as an angel for her beauty. Lol, that's all I remember as I was a kid back then. I had to look up the actors you mentioned. I remeber Chae Shi-ra as Madam Jami and Song Il-kook as the main rival of Jang Bogo. They all feel like sketches from ages ago in my mind now. It was a quality drama though. Infact the dramas of that Hallyu period, like Dae Jang-geum, have no match to this day!

But you know what, the trailer gives kinda Emperor of the Sea vibes (whatever of them are left in my mind 😂). So if it is anywhere close in the level of production and acting, you all can look forward to a good drama!

I am not so sure I'll be in the audience myself, as I remember feeling Emperor of the Sea isn't my kinda drama even back then, and I HAD to watch it coz my brother insisted 😂.

I watched EMPRESS CHEON CHU and this seems like a remake geared more toward male viewers like KBS' other anniversary sageuk "JEONG DO-JEON."
I'm not impressed with the casting, but having a Goryeo sageuk to watch is a treat.

I also mostly watched for Soo Ae who looked like the most beautiful creature in the world.
I did one of Madam Jami's hairstyles for my cousin 😁

Lol! I don't even remember what she looked like, except that I felt fearful whenever she came onscreen 😂

I believe most of the International viewers watching during that time were also young, including myself. It was through my mother's frequent watching of sageuks that I became interested in them. She always controlled the TV remote, which was quite amusing. I found Mysoju later online, problem solved.
I don't remember much at all except for the actors. My mom loves Chae Shi-ra because she reminded her of Audrey Hepburn. I remember Soo-ae for her voice.
I think "Dae Jang Geum" was the drama that introduced many outside of Korea to K-dramas.

And my brother controlled the remote, not without me retaliating though 😂. Gosh, the mention of these dramas has brought so much childhood nostalgia for us 😢🙂.

Mysoju was where I first started watching Dramas, way back when!

2

Oh man, those were the days! I wish the Big 3s would re-release those epic dramas more often.
@firewife5
I felt really sad when it got shut down. I understand the legal reasons behind it, but it held so many memories for a lot of Internation viewers.

3

I watched Emperor on a US cable channel, AZN, that is also long gone away 😢. I was probably too new to sageuks because all I remember is men yakking while sitting at a round table inside a ship. Sometimes the tablecloth changed 😁

6

@bbstl Thank you for this comment made me laugh out loud 👉🏾 ‘all I remember is men yakking while sitting at a round table inside a ship. Sometimes the tablecloth changed 😁’

3

@kiara It brought back such great memories when you mentioned it. I could see the shut down coming, and like you said, I understood why, but I was still sad to see it go. There were so many classic dramas you could watch there, that you just can't find anywhere else. I was quite annoyed at DramaFever when it first came out, but then I was sad to see it go too, lol!

3

@bbstl
LOL. I didn't get the politics until "Immortal Yi Soon Shin." A kind soul who was subbing for viki and WITH S2 invited me to a private site where it was fully subbed. I think it was called Anztv. There were a few native Koreans there who were well-versed in their history and I learned a lot from them.

@firewife5

I felt the same way about DF. I was done with them when they started messing with DB. Do you remember the "Level 7 Civil Service" stick figure recaps.?
https://www.dramabeans.com/2013/03/announcement-level-7-civil-servant-recaps-now-with-less-joo-won/
It left me bitter but we had fun with it.LOL

3

Thank you for that flashback into the archives. Scary times for DB,

3

@kiara I missed Immortal Yi Soon Shin because of not liking Emperor! Oh, well. Live and learn.

And I wasn’t watching Level 7 Civil Servant but when it blew up here it was sooooooo funny! Man, we were hacked off at DF! And now years later I’m still mad at AT&T for cancelling them 😂

I will watch this as this sort of saeguk is exceptionally rare these days. Most of what we watch on TV these days are the fusion and fluffy kind of saeguks.

I noticed that the characters in this upcoming show are quite similar to those in THE IRON EMPRESS. However, I'm hopeful that this version will be an improvement. (Please writer nim, make it so). I suspect that some of the costumes and sets may be reused, which is understandable.

In THE IRON EMPRESS, Lee Deok-wha played Choi's character, while King Hyeonjeong was portrayed by Kim Ji-hoon. Although I was hoping for Kim Ji-hoon to reprise his role, I'm open to being surprised by Kim Dong-joon.

I'm particularly excited to see Lee Won-jong playing the character of Kang Jo, who happens to be my favorite commander. It's been a while since I've seen him in a sageuk.

Overall, I'm thrilled that an epic Goryeo sageuk is coming back, and I sincerely hope that it will be a good one.

I'm not convinced by the casting of Kim Dong-Joon in this role. I hope I will be wrong.

I'm surprised to see Han Chae Young in the casting too. It's been a long time now.

It's nice to see a no-Joseon sageuk with war scenes, it could be epic! With 32 episodes, they have time to tell the story they want.

oooh it is a trend I predicted, war dramas, first the Namgoong Min one and then this. I dont usually watch them but ever since the Russian Bullshit Invasion in Ukraine started, I have more interest in the politics of wars.
is Korean war too sensitive to touch tho?

Finally, a daeha saeguk (Saeguk based on REAL history) and war-like that sets during the Goryeo period. This is something I have been looking forward since the announcement of the cast. Fluffy fusion saeguks can never match this type of saeguk...especially when it comes to historical accuracy, epicness and of course....rating wise.

Question for long time beanie experts. If this show started filming in May but is already set to premier in November and is 32 episodes long, does this mean it’s a live shoot rather than fully preproduced? Like they will likely still be shooting late episodes while it’s airing? Otherwise it seems like a brutal schedule for filming. Some other 16 episode shows I’m eagerly anticipating have been filming since March but aren’t being shown until 2024. So annoyed I have to wait so long! It’s not even action style shows which might need a lot of CGI.

If I'm not mistaken those with very late air-dates are for Netflix or Disney. Korean network usually don't announce shows with such late dates. I think this is actually more in accordance with kdrama schedules.

Iron Empress (Empress Chunchu) 2.0 in the works :). I'm super excited.
The sword choreography has to live up to and best Iron Empress's.
Is this centered around Hyeongjong? It has to be. I don't think I want to see the repeat of the internal strife between Chunchu and her brother, nor her husband.

Actor's 31, according to Wiki is playing the character who was 18 when the first wave of invasion during his reign happened and only 27 when Goryeo finally won for good. Perhaps styling will age him up as the story progresses.

I am pleased to see this status report on KBS’s S/S 32 episode THE GORYEO-KHITAN WAR. Fingers crossed that KBS will not mess around with US availability.
With episode one scheduled to air Saturday, Nov. 4 I should be able to complete watching the 40 episode cdrama MYSTERIOUS LOTUS CASEBOOK that I started last night.

Now this is my kind of saeguk! I love ones that are based on historical events, and there has to be a lot of good sword fights and battle strategies, right?

Good question. I know him as an idol mostly and very vaguely remember having a tiiiny role in some drama, but that's it. In other hand, he's not backed by huge fandom or company, so maybe he did get the role fairly by winning the audition and is about to positively impress us all?

I would have liked that as well, but we did get the writer from KING OF TEARS (something that I had devoutly wished for- thank you drama gods). KOT was written at a Shakespearean level- beyond doubt the best written Sageuk that I have ever seen. This is why I am excited about this show.

We will definitely be watching this one. I expect that KBS will devote real resources to this as this is their 50th Anniversary special. For comparison JUMONG, PRINCE OF LEGEND was the MBS network's 45th anniversary special.

"LIGHT and SHADOW" was the 50th Anniversary drama for MBC. I was surprised they didn't celebrate with a sageuk considering the genre is their bread and butter.
