Truth, lies, and adorability in new My Lovely Liar teaser

tvN’s My Lovely Liar is sure doing a good job drumming up interest in the drama leading to the premiere. The fantasy romance stars Kim So-hyun (Love Alarm 2) and Hwang Min-hyun (Alchemy of Souls), along with a great supporting cast. One thing that has struck me since the drama started promotions is its strong palette — the colors, tone, and saturation have been hyper consistent, and they’ve got this great mix of dark shadows and neon cheer that I’m expecting to reflect the drama’s tone in a nutshell. *Sets the bar ridiculously high*

But better than the color palette is the fact that the new teaser finally gives us a glimpse of our second leads and supporting cast! That means we’ve got — drumroll please — Seo Ji-hoon (Revenge of Others), Yoon Ji-on (Tomorrow), and Lee Si-woo (The Fabulous). Additionally, I spy the wonderful Jin Kyung (Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim 3), Seo Jung-yeon (Bait), Seo Hyun-chul (Heartbeat), and Ahn Nae-sang (Miraculous Brothers), among others.

As for the contents of the teaser, we see our human lie detector Mok Sol-hee (Kim So-hyun) noticing that something is different about the mysterious composer and music producer Kim Do-ha (Hwang Min-hyun). They might start off as opposites, but the teaser makes quick work of showing us not only their budding romance, but the similarity in their situations — Do-ha says in voiceover that if you look carefully, you won’t find any family without some troubles.

The teaser also makes a big deal out of Do-ha’s constantly masked face — after all, he’s in recluse-mode after being suspected of murder, so it makes sense. But it’s also used as a fun metaphor for him becoming willing to be vulnerable around Sol-hee. She gently teases him at the end of the teaser that he’s finally showing her his bare face, and Do-ha replies that he wants to be seen as a good person to her. *Squee*

We don’t get much of the plot around our aforementioned second leads, but Yoon Ji-on plays the CEO of the company Do-ha is signed to, and he’s been a help to our hero (personally and professionally) while he’s been in his slump. As for Lee Si-woo, she’s a vocalist who will seemingly collaborate with Do-ha. And last but not least, Seo Ji-hoon plays a kind-hearted police detective who’s long been in love with Sol-hee. Agh, my heart.

Directed by PD Nam Sung-woo (Love in Contract, My Roommate is a Gumiho) and with scripts by Seo Jung-eun (Let Me Be Your Knight), My Lovely Liar premieres on July 31 in the Monday-Tuesday slot.

Hwang Minhyun has such a soulful gaze. It should serve this role well but I hope he can extend his range too.

Agreed. He’s still not the most technically skilled actor, but his eyes are very emotionally expressive. It worked wonders for him in Alchemy of Souls.

That said, I do hope he keeps improving on his craft and not just relying on his good looks and pretty eyes.

true. I was just thinking that he was so good in his role in Alchemy which made use of his eyes and looks quite well, but he'll have to make me forget that character with a new one here to make me believe him in another type of role. Love Kim So Hyun so she will hopefully draw him out a bit to play someone different here.

Agree. I've only seen him in Alchemy so it might not be a fair judgement but I don't have much impression of him being a lead actor. However, through the teasers I've been impressed with his gaze. I mention this in my comment below but his "eyes of love" are truly amazing.

Yep! He is still green but his gaze is such a moving and potent instrument. It always amazes me that a human feature like eyes could come across so emotionally and movingly on screen. I am a bit embarrassed to say this but what the hell, his gaze alone made me weepy a few times in AoS.

Kim So-hyun is one of my faves, so this will be at the top of my watch list... but I keep wanted to call it Lie Alarm.

And is it too much to hope that Jin Kyung will be playing a head nurse again? And hollering for Mr. Gu?

Love Alarm is one of my favorite dramas. I just loved how the drama was scripted and how it ended.

I'm looking forward to seeing Yoon Ji-on even more than to seeing Minhyun.

The male lead chosen is more popular than the better actor.😟

Having sky-high, unhealthy expectations for this due to the disappointments that were the last two anticipated, high-profile dramas. Surely, I won’t be let down again, right? Right??!?

Anyways, I am beyond excited. I feel like a broken record by now but THEY ARE SO CUTE!!

I smile like a fool at my screen every-time I see them in the teasers. That scene with them holding hands already has me squealing.

Second that comment about the palette. Its just teasers but the color tone and cinematography have been impressive every time. Kim so-hyun is so charming to watch no matter the role but Hwang min-hyun and his "eyes of love" have me hooked. Can't wait to see their combined cute and pretty on a weekly basis.
