Not Others: Episodes 5-6

We hit the halfway mark with a pair of lovely episodes that tear into the meat of this drama. There’s a focus on Mom this week, as we learn more about her past — and then watch things go haywire when that past comes back to greet her. As our little family unit is faced with upset, our mother-daughter duo finally argue in earnest, showing their real feelings.

EPISODES 5-6

We left off last week when Jin-hee had a man up against a wall after spotting him in the street staring up at her apartment window. It’s the second time she’s seen him doing something strange, but she’s forced to let him go yet again. We’ll come to learn later, long before Jin-hee does, that this man is actually her father, PARK JIN-HONG (Ahn Jae-wook), and it’s complicated because he never knew Jin-hee existed.

To back up and explain, we get another glimpse of Eun-mi in high school (played by Park Yi-hyun). This time we see things aren’t as cut and dry as they originally seemed. All we knew before was that Jin-hee’s father had transferred to another school and Eun-mi had never seen him again — making him sound kinda terrible. But what we see now is that he never knew she was pregnant, and his family forced him to transfer schools simply because he was dating Eun-mi and the rumors it caused.

Eun-mi’s “friend” back then, who was Jin-hong’s sister, says Eun-mi ruined their family and beats her up quite badly with her crew of bullies. And then we meet Jin-hong as a high school student (Kwon Yong-hyun) as he comes to tend to her wounds and tell her how much he likes her, no matter what anyone says. He is freaking adorable — sweet and attentive and shy — and it’s no wonder she fell for him. Ironically, it’s their impending forced separation that brings these two to seal the deal — and that’s when Eun-mi gets pregnant.

I just love, love, love this flashback and the direction the show is taking with this story. Not only is their first love shot beautifully with low light and heart-gripping nostalgia, but it’s excruciating to see that Jin-hong is not at all how we were led to believe. From this minute on I am rooting for these two in the present timeline, where they inevitably meet again.

Before Jin-hee learns about her father, Eun-mi runs into Jin-hong at her physical therapy office, which is the first time she’s seen him in thirty years. They recognize each other instantly and, in fact, Jin-hong recognized her the other day at the police station — when Jin-hee had hauled him in as a potential pervert and Eun-mi happened to be there visiting her daughter’s work. This is the reason he’s been skulking around their apartment trying to get another glimpse of her.

Jin-hong is immediately happy to reunite with Eun-mi and we find out he’s never really gotten over her. He was banned from seeing her when they were young and then he heard she moved and met someone else, so he gave up and just spent his life studying and working to become a doctor (all this is to say: he’s single). Now, he wants to be near her again in any capacity, even if it means being friends. He’s as sweet as he was thirty years ago and I can’t help but want him and Eun-mi to get together and give it a real shot this time.

But Eun-mi is super conflicted. She’s still got feelings for him too, clearly, but she doesn’t want to. She wants to be as angry as she thinks she should be for having to raise Jin-hee on her own. She struggled, while he was off making a ton of money as a doctor (so, single and rich), and her head is telling her not to get involved with him again.

But her heart is not following what her mouth is saying. She keeps ending up at dinners with him, until somehow he’s carting her to and from work every day — which, as she explains, is just practical because he has a car and the neighborhood is dangerous with a killer on the loose. Haha. Well played, Drama. I’m almost convinced the killer makes sense just for this bit.

At their first dinner “date,” Eun-mi angrily tells Jin-hong that he has a daughter. She wasn’t planning to but seeing him there, doing well, makes her want to “be mean.” At first he’s too shocked to respond, but later he wants to compensate in some way and, not knowing how, he offers her money. Eun-mi responds, “You think you can make up for my lost time with money?” This is her back and forth: she sees how sweet and genuine he still is, but is bitter about her life.

And this is the core conflict between Eun-mi and Jin-hee, once Jin-hee finds out a) who her father is and b) that her mother is sort of dating him again. Neither of these women is sure how to feel about this man that’s just reappeared in their lives — but his absence has caused them hurt in very different ways.

We see Jin-hee as a child, always second in line to her mother’s boyfriends (of which there were a string). We learn that Eun-mi almost married once, but the fiancé’s family didn’t want him to marry someone who already had a child. At the time, Mi-jung and her mother offered to take Jin-hee and raise her so that Eun-mi could get married, but ultimately, Eun-mi called off the wedding so she wouldn’t be separated from her daughter.

From Jin-hee’s perspective, she has always been a burden in her mother’s life. Episode 6 is entitled “Goldfish Poop,” referring to a statement someone made about Jin-hee when she was very young — but she still remembers — that Eun-mi was like a pretty goldfish, but having a kid was like having poop hanging off the side. It’s a gross metaphor for multiple reasons, and the effect it’s had on Jin-hee is very real.

In an explosive (and extremely well-written) argument, Jin-hee finally tells Eun-mi how hard her life has been. Jin-hee has always been good at everything she does, feeling like she had to be perfect. Eun-mi wonders if this is because she thought she’d be abandoned (by her mother, just like her father), but Jin-hee says it’s because she felt like it was her fault how her mother’s life turned out. “Do you know how guilty I’ve felt for being me?” Both actresses carry off this scene in a way that tore my heart out as one cries and the other holds back tears, both with equal pain.

While they bicker all the time, this is their first real argument. Jin-hee spouts off a few hurtful things to Eun-mi and leaves the apartment, only to find Jin-hong at the door — and he’s heard every word. Later, Jin-hee feels terrible and guilty over what happened and, as always, she’s the one who apologizes (not the other way around).

To try to make amends, Jin-hee invites Eun-mi on a trip with her and Jin-soo, which Eun-mi accepts. As the three of them get off the plane and make their way to their destination, Jin-hong appears. He’s already there waiting — because Eun-mi invited him without telling Jin-hee.

This last moment makes me so angry. I loved these episodes and I hope the show does not play Eun-mi’s behavior for humor next week. I want to see these two healed! Jin-hee already told her mother why she’s uncomfortable with her dating Jin-hong — because she doesn’t want to be “goldfish poop” when the man in question is her father. The poor thing was already abandoned once, and Eun-mi didn’t (and doesn’t) have the emotional maturity to take care of Jin-hee like she should have. The last thing Jin-hee needs is to feel abandoned a second time when she’s left out by her mother and father dating.

I get it. I really get it. The pain is deep here. But I’m learning to trust the show as it improves each week and I think these are things that can be resolved (for the story, at least) as Jin-hong proves himself as a character. We’ve gotten to know Jin-hong better (and I’m totally smitten), but Jin-hee still knows nothing about him. It makes sense that she doesn’t trust Eun-mi but, at the same time, if Eun-mi were actually in a stable relationship things might be different between her and her daughter. They’ve lived completely enmeshed with each other and a good-hearted third party could be just what they need to neutralize them.

Wow, I can’t believe how much I like where the story is going right now. I’m just hoping next week the drama keeps doing exactly what it’s doing.

Well, as a person still struggling to make money in my 40s if I were a single mother and my rich handsome doctor ex appears in my life, I would probably be the same and forgive him, but still 30 years of not trying what happened to someone you loved? Surely after he was single for 10 years his parents would have stopped opposing to him getting back with her

I don’t think he stayed single because he was still in love with her? From what I understood, it was so initially but he just ended up focusing on his work and never really dated or looked for a relationship. May be he is not the type to go out and make friends. He probably got together with Eun Mi because she was pursuing him and then he liked her.
Yeah, it’s convenient that he is single and rich after all this time 😅

Yes, to think of it now, I probably missed the part, he wasn’t looking for her intentionally, but suddenly saw her by accident, right? Then makes sense, he was probably just planning to keep being single, but nowadays, there are many women who would snatch a handsome shy doctor, lol, I wish someone taught me how, haha

This probably was the most straight forward ‘you are the father’ reveal. Lol. simple and effective.

I absolutely hated the friend beating up the father. I get it she was angry but it wasn’t her place to assault someone without knowing the whole story.

Eun Mi: I have really been trying to understand her. I did appreciate that the show wrote an unconventional mother. But this episode made it so hard for me to root for her. Yes, I know she isn’t irresponsible or a burden to her daughter. And that she loves her daughter and I don’t doubt that. But her self centered approach to everything is grating me. To a point it makes me think she is a narcissist.
That last scene made me rage? Really Eun Mi? 🤬🤬🤬
Really? You brought him on a trip without consulting your daughter? Give that girl some time to process all this. You can date him all you want but don’t shove it on your daughter.
And earlier when she pulled out all her clothes from the closet and left a mess behind, I wanted Jin Hee to move out. Seriously. Who wants to clean up behind this woman??
I am sure the show will give a reason as to why Eun Mi is doing it, but that’s not what adults do. Adults talk and respect others opinion. Atleast make an effort.

Jin Hee : I felt really bad for her. When she finally spoke her mind, I felt sad for the life she has lived. Bearing the guilt, compensating with her skills etc - not a great childhood tbh. I agree she didn’t need to nor didn’t have to keep it bottled up. But it felt sad. And I also don’t like that Jin Hee is taking the role of an adult in the house. It made me wonder if she would have even better off if she grew up with her aunt and grandma. She might have gone to college.

Jae Won and Jin Hee : I love them! Each and every scene they are in is just gold. I rewatch their scenes every single time. Just give me more of their scenes and Captain Jang please.

After the joy ep 5 gave me, ep 6 ending undid everything.

I understand women face the consequences of unprotected sex. They both were teenagers and both had consensual sex. He wasn’t aware. He left due to his family. We as viewers don’t know why she chose to keep the baby and not abort, given that she was living in a house with an abusive dad.
I am fine with them not wanting him in their lives, but hitting them so badly was not funny.

I imagine a teenage girl then didn't think she had a choice to abort, since it only became legal in Korea in 2021.

I'm glad you mentioned the mess Eun-mi left for her daughter to clean up. I don't know if that was meant to be funny--like, "Oh, look, she's the mom, but she's going through her daughter's clothes and leaving a mess behind just like a teenager!"--but it was just one more thing in a long list of things that irked me about Eun-mi in these episodes. I know she loves her daughter and that bickering seems to be her love language, but her lack of regard and respect for her in certain situations is glaring.

Park Jin hong is now my favorite character in this show. The little grin on his face when EunMi holds his hand or asks to go out for dinner - adorable.

Liking the interactions between Jin Hee and Jae Won as well. Glad everyone got the news that JH is JH’s daughter and they didn’t drag it out.

As interesting as I find the relationship and dynamics of mother and daughter, I also crave scenes with Jin-hee and Jae-won. I can't help but be amused by the way Jae-won flinches and recoils every time Jin-hee touches him, for example when she takes the front door key out of his pocket. I'm just not sure yet whether it's because he's attracted to her or he's afraid he'll get the next injury. Maybe both. If it continues like this, the poor man will have at least one broken arm in the next few episodes and two broken legs by the end.
My theory is that Jae-won had already been attracted to Jin-heen in the Acadamy days. However, it is possible that he saw her with her childhood friend back then and drew the wrong conclusions. I first had this theory after the scene when Jae-won was introduced to Jin-soo. After Eun-mi blurted out that Jin-soo was Jin-hoo's childhood sweetheart but was dumped by him, Jae-won was suddenly much more relaxed.

Jin-hee and Jae-won's relationship is my favorite, too. I expected more movement by now so am a little disappointed, but I also get that this week had to be more devoted to mom's romantic storyline.

I, too, think Jae-won was interested in Jin-hee back at the academy. I think she liked him, too, but was completely unaware of her own feelings. She still seeks out his approval and respect almost unconsciously, which is a big tell. One of them needs to make a move soon, though--I'm getting impatient, lol!

The last scene made me so angry. I guess it's the mark of a good drama that I care so much for the characters (Jin-hee in this case) but Eun-mi's cluelessness was really something. I can't believe Mi-jung had to explain to her that Jin-hong's reappearance might adversely or at least emotionally affect Jin-hee 🤯. I really hope there is an actual apology from Eun-mi next week coz this forced vacation ain't it.

The drama still continues to be a joy overall. I loved the scene where Jin-hee yelled at Jae-won as Captain Jang's proxy 🤣.

Perfect choice for the last screen caps, @dramaddictally! There wasn't tons of movement between Jin-hee and Jae-won this week, but I loved all their interactions and the building trust they have. I wonder why he's considered a swamp that people get stuck in?

I just can't bring myself to like Eun-mi. I like her and her daughter together, and I like her interactions with just about everyone else, and there are times when I'm almost on her side, but then she always goes and ruins it. She looked so smug and pleased with herself when she walked over to Jin-hong I just wanted to smack her. I don't fault him for that interaction - I'm sure she lied that she'd cleared it with Jin-hee.

I like Jin-hong very much though. I wasn't a fan of the friend beating him up - it was much funnier last week when she was just ranting about a hypothetical situation than this week when she barged into a private conversation and got violent right away. Especially when he had just admitted that the reason he never tried to get back to Eun-mi was because he was trying to protect her from his violent father. But I love that we got to see how sweet Jin-hong was in the past, and how sweet and earnest he still is.

Loved the friend beating up Eun Mi's first love. Their friendship is adorable and I love how Mi Jung dotes on Jin Hee ❤

I am also okay with the excuse of Jin Hee's dad being in the dark about his biological daughter for 30 years because Eun Mi never wanted to inform him. Sure, he could have searched for Eun Mi's whereabouts after they broke up, but he also did mention that when he asked around about her, people said she was married to a nice guy. Probably, a case of misinformation.

I don't mind Eun Mi wanting to get back with Jin Hong because he seems like a nice guy (except for breaking up under parents' compulsion, but then they were high school kids and the news of Eun Mi being pregnant would have freaked them out).

Also, I am not that angry with Eun Mi not informing Jin Hee about Jin Hong joining their vacation because I am looking forward to the dad-daughter bond, given that the show has already established a strong mom-daughter relationship.

Thanks for the recaps @dramaddictally

I had a really hard time with Eun-mi's actions and words this week. I do want to give the show time to resolve the things it put out there, and I understand that there are six more episodes in which to show character development, but I was beyond frustrated by her immaturity and callousness.

First, I understand why Eun-mi would initially be cold and mean with Jin-Hong, but she should have stopped Mi-jung from beating him up. Additionally, I had no patience with her silly game playing where she was sending mixed signals to him deliberately to gauge his interest, give him some hope, and then shut him down again. I know I'm supposed to get that her head and heart were in conflict, but it played like attention-seeking, even manipulative behavior to me, all in service of stroking her own ego. Frankly, I was baffled that he continued to harbor and express such ardent romantic interest in her with her acting like that.

As for the fight between the mother and daughter, I agree that the acting and writing were great, but everything about how Eun-mi handled her daughter's painful confession was textbook bad parenting. It reminded me of a former family member of mine who, when confronted respectfully with someone's (justified) hurt feelings or anger, would, out of guilt or defensiveness, lash out and blame the person for having those feelings in the first place ("You shouldn't remember that!" or "You shouldn't have let yourself feel sad!"). No taking of responsibility or even expressing some sympathy or regret that the person was so hurt/angry.

I also hated the way Eun-mi instigated the conversation--which Jin-hee didn't even want to have--by baiting and needling her about dating her father (totally inappropriate and childish, btw)--and then essentially got mad that they were having the conversation at all. Finally, the fact that Jin-hee had to apologize is insane! She had nothing to apologize for. She didn't cross the line and insult her mother in any truly cheap or mean way; she just expressed her real feelings and insecurities, and her mother then berated her for having them. Just bad parenting and bad human being-ing. And that was all before Eun-mi made the ultimate selfish decision to invited Jin-Hong on the trip without mentioning it to Jin-hee!

Another person who got on my nerves this week: Jin-Hee's first love. Stop being a freeloader, dude!

Last week I liked Jin-soo and what he added to their little family, but this week made me wonder a little more what his point is in this drama. Is he there to make Jae-won a little jealous? He's clearly not there to mediate between our mother daughter pair. I hope he becomes more interesting because otherwise, you're right, he's just a bit of a freeloader.

I, too, was initially intrigued by his presence but then quickly irritated over the course of these two episodes. I'm not sure what his purpose is, either. During that conversation Jin-hee had with her friend, I thought the show was suggesting that Jin-hee's continued feelings for Jin-soo--or her unwarranted idealization of him as her first love--are what's holding her back from having a real relationship. But that didn't seem to go anywhere and he's such a dolt that it makes no sense for Jin-hee to idealize him anyway.

I liked the little moment where Jae-won appeared jealous. It's about damn time he showed more obvious romantic interest. I'm getting impatient on that front too, lol.

I agree, but I did appreciate that both Jae Won and Jin Soo know Jin Her and her tells well enough to know that a jiggling leg means something is bothering her. How they responded to that knowledge was night and day - Jae Won gave her space and listened to her until she was ready to tell him (which she did). Jin Soo took advantage of her distraction to get her to buy him a coat. The writers are clearly showing us that JH and JS are siblings, not partners, yet they both know her better than her own mother.

Jin-soo cheekily acting like Jin-hee's boyfriend (while Jae-won watches) is amusing but he's otherwise pretty annoying. In addition to being eye candy and spurring jealousy, I think he's there to set up a contrast between mother and daughter "first loves," with everyone else constantly referring to him and Jin-hee and teasing her about it when they're both obviously completely over it. Meanwhile, no one had seemed to spare a thought for Eun-mi's first love, and here she is immediately falling back into it.

"Mother = teenager, daughter = adult" is interesting in theory but I agree it can be painful to watch it in practice. The last scene with Eun-mi having secretly invited Jin-hong made me rage on Jin-hee's behalf but also OF COURSE SHE WOULD have invited him because she's the same impulsive, boy-obsessed, immature person she's always been, plus second chances plus she can rationalize it as building a father-daughter relationship even though said daughter is clearly not ready for that. She's not an adult in relationships and she's not going to grow up overnight; it would be unrealistic to make her gain maturity and empathy that fast but I'm struggling to have patience with her.

This drama continues to be delightful and is a current favourite of mine.

What I like watching most is Jae-Won’s exasperation every time Jin-Hee is around - she’s a bit irritating sometimes but even if she doesn’t do anything or behaves well, he still has that exasperated look - so fun and good to watch! Let’s see when that icy exterior will crack finally - Ep 10?

I understand all the other Beanies’ frustration over Eun-mi but she is who she is. I actually don’t expect her to change much - that attitude has been with her all her life. Nonetheless, the reunion with Jin-Hong may mellow her down, not sure. In fact, both mother and daughter are very similar in that they don’t filter although the daughter is much better having grown up with her mom.

My biggest question, though, is why we need a serial killer again?! A police drama can deal with other challenges but this?

I would like to see Eun-Mi show some growth. But even if she finds a partner for life, it will free Jin-Hee from her guilt. I think them living together hasn't been too healthy. Its time to shake things up a little bit.

I don't mind the killer angle. It doesn't take away much from the plot and it is very much part of the plot as characters are affected by it. I am fine as long as its a background thingie and get resolved efficiently. This drama is just 12 episodes right?

Agreed! I actually like that the serial killer plot line is showing me that Jin Hee is actually a good observer and detective. I appreciate that we are seeing that she is actually good at her job.

As always, thank you @dramaddicttally for the recap.
I think we all agreed that these episodes could be perfect if not for the ending. But yes, even the part that we hate was actually very typical of Eun Mi. I hope the show will stay in this track. This is the only Kdrama that I watch for now.
Parts that I enjoyed most:
Jin Hee and Jae Won. I suspect he has a feeling for Jin Hee for a while now while Jin Hee at least had a crush on him in academy - there's no way she mentioned about him to her mom without any reason. I like how they got to know each other better. The fun part; Jae Won needs to wear armor if they were going to continue their partnership during work. I'm sure she'll treat him better once they're in romantic relationship. 😃Also, I like that Jae Won is portrayed as calm, responsible yet isn't afraid to do what's right, even against his superior.
I like that we got to see the roots in Jin Hee's need to be a good kid and it's totally understandable. Come to think of it, these episodes made us root for Jin Hee more while last week’s was Eun Mi. I like it.
I didn't support her aunt beating the father, but I love that she was there for them, especially for Jin Hee, through thick and thin. I just adore her character.
While I applaud him for feeling guilty, I just couldn't buy his reasoning. Even when the partner you had unprotected sex with didn't inform you for whatever reasons they'd be, the least you could do was seeking information. There's always possibility for pregnancy, but the fact that he didn't, irritated me. Whether he's simply a simple-minded kind of guy or just didn't care enough of Eun Mi.
Love the crew of the police each day. They truly bonded away after the team dinner. I was originally suspected Capt. Jang having feeling for Jae Won. But it seemed not to be the case here.
While Jin Soo character adds more humor to the story, I hope he didn't end up to be just an afterthought. How great would it be if he had a part in catching the serial killer in a comedic way?
The not so great moment:
Seeing how messy Eun Mi's room. She's almost 50 and not teenager. She should've known better as an adult.

I liked these 2 episodes, except for the best friend beating up the dad and the ending. That was gross and wrong. Think about your daughter woman, at least give her time and him too, the poor man.

I am enjoying this show so far. I am hoping more time will be devoted to Jin Hee and Jae Won's relationship in next week's episodes. I've only seen Park Sung Hoon in The Glory, so it's fun to watch him in a very different role. And added bonus of seeing the actress playing Captain Jang in a very different role from her role in The Glory.

I was so disappointed in Eun Mi in episode 6. Her inviting her first love on that trip and completely springing it on her daughter was, in my opinion, heinous. Who does that? That is her father and she does not know him at all and to just throw them on a trip together? I get triggered by mother/daughter drama and thought about not watching this show at all, but I gave it a chance because it was so funny. But if Eun Mi is gonna remain immature and selfish I don't think I can continue.
