[K-drama Treasure Hunt] Instant photos

Welcome to the K-drama treasure hunt, where we all go looking for K-drama treasure in the form of tiny drama details that we know and love. Sometimes these details take the shape of well-worn tropes (oppa Band-Aiding) or storytelling devices (Top Secret Deadly Allergy), but other times it’s just details we know we’ve seen in other dramas, but need help putting all the clues together.

Each week we’ll put you on the hunt for a piece of K-drama treasure, and you can report your findings in the comments.

There’s no umpire in this game, so if you find the detail we’re looking for, drop the drama title (or even better, drama title + episode number) in the comments, and we’ll all take your word for it. Or, we’ll go binge watch just to see it play out.

And remember, we’re here to map our way to the treasures not to the plot twists! We know how exciting as it can be to have all the hard-earned details stashed in your head, but let’s try to keep the spoilers out of the comments.

This week’s treasure:

Instant photos.

Your mission:

Seek out all the moments where characters have their picture taken and walk away with the photos in hand. These can be scenes in a photo booth – like the recent one in My Lovely Boxer where a couple commemorates their date with photo strips full of cutesy props. Or they could be Polaroid-style pictures where a little memento develops on the spot. In any case, we’re checking our camera phones at the door this week and looking for physical photos only.

Thanks @marysadanaga for this treasure hunt idea!

🎵🎶✨ K-Drama Treasure Hunt 👀🔍…💥🕺 K-Drama Treeeeaaaasure Hunt💎🎁…✨🎶🎵 My favorite time of the week! 💓🙋‍♀️

I remember this happening recently in Junho Is My King, ahem, I mean King the Land. I do believe it is in episode 5 when Won "tricks" Sa-rang into going on a "date" at a fancy restaurant, having dressed each other in adorable couple's, very expensive, athleisurewear. The waitress snaps a polaroid of them...imagining them as a couple (something Won would like very much, but that is not yet on Sa-rang's proverbial radar at this moment!).

One instant photo and the only polaroid that's coming to mind is Oh Yoon-hee and Shim Su-ryeon in Penthouse 1. I think episode 10 or 11. Shim Su-ryeon already figured Oh Yoon-hee was the person who actually committed the murder against her lost daughter whilst the rest of the penthouse residents, parents and children alike, had actually done worse than murder to her.

But, that didn't stop Su-ryeon from wanting a true friendship with Oh Yoon-hee. So they went on this boat cruise and took several pictures. Shim Su-ryeon made them take a polarized picture that kinda dated their budding friendship as if it was 10 years back. That was one of the final straws it took for Oh Yoon-hee to spill truthfully to Shim Su-ryeon at the end of that episode or the next. And that birthed a friendship that transcended 3 seasons of Penthouse, and put Oh Yoon-hee on the path to becoming the one Penthouse resident that always make Cheon Seo-jin and Joo Dan-te pee their pants whenever she's brewing something - trouble or not. All of this because of a polarized picture.

I still will not forgive Penthouse for killing off Oh Yoon-hee when the tension was at its highest and she was riding at top gear. And, I thought they'd cast Eugene in Escape of the Seven.

Honorary mentions...
Love In Contract, and Marriage Contract : Took wedding pictures to fool Judge Jung Ji-ho's workmates, and to fool the KONOS interview personnel, respectively.

Because This Life Is My First - Was there a photo booth here? My memory is quite hazy but I think there's something like that here.

I was about to name My Unfamiliar Family where the mom was blasting the family group with photo trips of herself in Hawaii but I guess that doesn't count here.

“The Best Hit” has both photo booths (one of the tiny stickers they bought was important) and instant photo, I guess that was a Polaroid PPL. One of the MLs (Tabong!) took lots of instant selfies to "decorate" FL's (Woo Seung) house, so she could see him everywhere.

I know I have seen many other scenes in photo booths un other dramas. It seems this is product placement too.

Extraordinary You : Sae-Mi, the 2FL in the manhwa but a supporting role in the drama, took a lot polaroids during their trip. She offered some pictures to Dan-Oh with Bae-Kyung on them. But Dan-Oh chose only the one with Haru on the background. She will keep it preciously. Ep. 7-8

Answer Me 1988, both Jung-Hwan and Taek had a Polaroid picture taken with Deok-sun.

Surplus Princess, since she couldn’t afford to have a professional photo taken for her resume, she got them from the photo booth

My memory is a little hazy on this one. Help me out here. In Our Beloved Summer wasn’t there a scene where Yeon-So takes a pic of an unhappy Choi Woong with an instant camera during a trip they took? I vaguely remember a bus ride to get there.

My Lovely Liar I don't think they showed us the photo-taking or the actual photos but either the ML/or FL is shown looking at photos on their phone of the polaroids taken from their camping date!!

My Girlfriend is a Gumiho (Episode 12)
Dae Woong buys Miho a photo album and they add photos to it (they may take the pictures with a camera phone & then print them out so I'm not sure if this count). It did have plot significance though and it pictures in the album are physical haha

Twenty Five Twenty One (episode 10- I think)
The group goes to the beach and take pictures and then Hee Do & Ye Jin picked the snapshots they wanted.

I'm fuzzy on this to be honest haha. I remember the pictures posted on a wall or locker or something and that's where they chose from so I thought they were polaroids but I don't remember.

Goblin—the best. Gong Yoo 😍😍😍
I think there was one on 19th life, he kept throwing away the picture and then picking it back out the trash. 😆

There are many photo booths in drama land. However it slips my mind whenever I read the quiz.
The one coming to my mind is Twenty Five Twenty One with Hee-do and Yu-rim taking photos.
Not sure, but I think there is a scene like that in The real has come.

Yes, The Real Has Come had a photo booth scene, and the ML kept the photo and threw away the photo depending on his feelings. The photo also commemorates the time when FL had spunk and personality before the spinectomy forced upon her by the writers in the second half.

Really old school instant photo—a scene in Goong when Chae Kyung breaks free momentarily disgused in a helmet trying to relive her pre-palace life and takes a selfie photo at a cell phone store and prints it out.

Since I just watched it the only one that sticks out in my mind at the moment is in Cunning Single Lady. In the first episode, the main couple goes out to eat for an anniversary and takes a polaroid selfie at the table right before he drops the bomb that he quit his job.

The trope where the female lead who is a single mom takes her child to a family restaurant and the male lead joins them and it happens to be picture day... and the restaurant employee mistakes them for a family and take a photo of them... and they awkwardly take a photo together... and they go home and stash the photo somewhere, which gets discovered by the female lead's mom or ex husband or mother in law...
