Hot October going for 1st place and joining other months - Every month is making there own highs. woah - UN n agencies this n that reports and analysis - cares no one - everyone enjoying popcorn - Enjoy now but you get what you deserve too - then don't come crying out loud.

Everyone has a specific culture - not need to be of a soceity. Internet culture too - I am from the blogging side as well as forums - the old php boards and even vbulletin boards - not those anonymous boards.

So conversation - debate - long posts - long writeups - histrionics and lot more styles - much intentional

I had like more than 15 blogs on various blogging platforms. Then you use to follow others blogs and all the social interaction of virtual world used to place like that.

No idiotic - smileys, emojis, memes - no videos no pictures - only conversation - from analysis to predictions - Such a good time. This is why i prefer this place.

This place is on Wordpress - and slow because of database and that database became loaded because of all those written episodes of drama with each taking more than 5000 words. There exist much simple and light open source programs that can really ease of the server pressure.

I don't think this place has much usage of wordpress at all.

Politics time - money time - lollipop time - Each and every politician trying to attract you with what they will provide you in future - at almost no cost - at the expense of tax money - which they will never do - except to their crony capitalists friends who actually have funded their campaigns.

So what you have to think - MONEY - u r 4 ur ownself - if money in bank u can easily fly in the air - as simple as that.

Old thugs who wear shiny suits, makeup face and rotten hearts r ready to fool u while making their own life good.

Ur decision - ur actions - don't cry later - as simple as that.

I said it before, elections go calm - u need action when it turns into a personality based contest - party based elections usually demand peaceful atmosphere while as much -ve ity can be in air.

The one who goes with -ve campaign mostly losses but eh one with+ve campaign can damage the whole economy too with all the lofty talks of giving this n that.

What u want - new faces - new views , new parties - only that can bring some changes in the system which needs complete makeover. Reforms aren't easy as bureaucracy is as powerful as it can be in the face of any enemy.

Many stories and insights from my trip to Seoul. I will share a k-drama type moment. During this year's Chuseok holiday, 80 percent of Koreans traveled to somewhere. But apparently, the remaining 20 percent were in line in front of me at the Namsan Tower cable car (in reality about 600 people.) After 40 minutes of waiting in line, ahead of me there was a commotion. A husband was holding the hand of his 3 year old daughter when an explosive argument erupted with his wife. She was screaming "What made you think I'd like this?" in reference to standing in line to go to the tower. He yelled back at her that she had said she would like it. They went back and forth to the discomfort of the people around them. She did not back down and literally got in his face. Then quickly, he took his daughter by the hand and they left the line. Granted, it was an awkward moment but there were mostly families waiting in line to go up the mountainside for the view, fresh air and some cultural events in the tower plaza. But the situation really did check off the weekender's argument trope.

OMG. Were we in Seoul at the same time? I was also there during Chuseok and stood in the super long line for the Namsan Tower cable car. We went near sunset but it was still rather warm waiting outside and I can see how tempers could flare. I was surprised at how reasonable the price was for the yummy Donkatsu I ate at the top (lucky to get in before it closed shortly after). I also did the obligatory restroom break at the top- awkward with the mirror right in front of you as well as the window wall. ;)

I went mid-morning and the crowd behind me grew to to the point of it ending in the neighborhood below.

This time I did not go up the tower. Instead, the next day I went to observation deck of Lotte World Tower, the tallest building in Seoul.

From a certain time now, this site had some changes and overall a lot of bugs :

- At least, once by day, it crashes.
- Notifications : before if I clicked on one, the other ones were still visible, now the whole list disapears. I miss some replies because I didn't see it.
- If I click on "view on context", it opens the article page but not where is the comment... If there are a lot of comments, it means to read a lot of them to find the one.

Yes, I understand the switch to fewer comments on a page, but when you click the notifications, it doesn't (yet, I'm hoping) take you to the actual comment or reply in question. I'm sure they're still trying to iron it out, but I hope it's soon!

The notifications disappearing started for me months ago, and I really prefer it the other way, but I wasn't sure if it was a deliberate decision or not.

I’ve had issues with this site since day one and I always hear “they’re working on it”. The site has gotten extremely popular and to keep it up and running ad space must be sold. I’m not sure, but that seems to be part of the problem. You wait for not only the page to load but all the accompanying ads as well. Many times the site will not load at all, comments are lost after you spend time entering them, and we also might miss out on some beanies comments because they’ve restricted the number of comments per page.
I don’t know what the answer is, but I’ve considered giving up posting because of these issues. (Having the site glitch and eat my comments is especially depressing.)
The good news is it’s a great site with excellent recappers, articles, etc. How to resolve the issues of what appears to be a result of increased popularity and traffic which should be a good thing? You got me.

Required fields are marked *

I hope you don’t give up posting as it’s always good to read comments from a variety of beanies.

I am a newbie so don’t have hands on experience of the golden era but my understanding is there was way more activity back then and this is evidenced by the 1000’s of comments on the last episode of Healer or the number of likes for certain Beanies comments. Also we can see how active the veteran beanies were by their exceptionally high numbers of both comments and likes. I think unless we all use the email hello@dramabeans.com to alert them to the problems they can’t assess how much of an issue each problem is. Currently most people say nothing or complain on the site where the tech crew are unlikely to see it.

There are different issues effecting the site so we all get impacted by one of them at some point and therefore we have learnt a number of strategies to limit our frustration levels. Such as composing offline to avoid losing our comments. Being aware of high traffic days due to the posts dropping that day such as What we’re watching and popular dramas recaps and posting early then walking away.

What fascinates me is whenever I have had issues getting onto the site when I finally get on I always find beanies have been commenting away during what I assumed was down time for everyone.

Thanks for the encouragement to kee going. I came very close to giving up on this site when my comments got eaten 3x on 2 separate days when the system glitched. I didn’t know there was an actual email to contact the site. Thanks for alerting me to it. Is that listed somewhere and I missed it?

I do try to read every comment before I post because I enjoy others perspectives, but it’s frustrating as heck to lose your thoughts after you’ve taken the time to post them. I don’t even add gifs or anything else to my fan wall because I was actually worried I’d be adding to overloading the site as a whole. How crazy is that?
I think the site is probably very well aware of the issues. I’m hoping there’s a resolution that works. We newbies want to contribute too, right?

If there are a lot of comments, I decided to give up. 🤣
I almost died trying to reply to comments in the last OT (or maybe two weeks ago). The conversations were super long so we had to reply in new comments or earlier ones. That made the search IMPOSSIBLE. Because the sequence didn't make sense and the notification wouldn't take me to the right comment.
And I made the OG comment so that made everything more complicated, with the repeated notifications.
Crazy stuff.

Every now and then I see lists and posts about how people wish/want old school Korean variety shows to return (Strong Heart, X Man, Golden Bell, etc) and I keep thinking there really isn't a way for the shows to come back (except maybe on streamers) because the world is just different compared to the past. The humor is different, the threshold for comedic physicality is different, and geez the headache inducing fan culture. Heaven forbid idols of different genders interact or allude to being actual people with flaws or thoughts or experiences. (Then again they keep debuting & recruiting idols younger and younger so what experiences can they have at 11 & 12?)

Then Strong Heart did return but they tried modernizing it by having it more as a group discussion with teams which people didn't like (they said it was too many hosts). The show also didn't have A listers like the past.

Overall, there seems to be a shift towards more of a talk show format and not physical games.

Personally, I would like a show like X Man to make a return; a show where the mischievous backstabbers or schemers of variety shows all have to work together and compete against each other. But then image comes into play again haha. I don't think people are allowed to play villainous characters without people not being able to separate character & person.

I get missing the older variety shows. I'm still a loyal watcher of Running Man, but I admit I'm often tuned out on my phone because they're just eating (and eating, and eating...) I know they're getting older and some of the harder games were very physical and resulted in back injuries and such, but surely there's a middle ground.

Haha during their most recent anniversary episode where there was a Q&A, there was mention of them not doing Name Tag Elimination or other physical games (or something like that; I don't know cause I didn't the whole thing, just the clip and it was a long time ago) and Jae Seok said it wasn't that they aged (even though the games *could* get physical and lead to certain feelings) but that it's just hard to be creative with it. It's only so many games people can come up with involving ripping off name tags.

Haha but they do seem to have lots of eating or camping or hanging out type of situations haha

I miss when they did the water games like being thrown from the chair. It's scary and I wouldn't want to do it but it was entertaining to watch.

On Jae Seok's show PlayYou, which is basically a one man show, he did a lot of running around and I was surprised by how fast he was. I think he did some timed challenges.

6

Required fields are marked *

Yeah the water games were always great. I loved their horror specials, when they sent them into spooky buildings or had them search for zombies.

I don't think viewers got tired of name-tag ripping. Guests who come on visibly light up whenever they get to play anything that has to do with name tags. I believe Jae Seok believes it, but I would argue with him that watching them cook their Nth version of ramen outside in a pot and then arguing over who does dishes isn't MORE creative than name tag ripping, but it IS a lot less interesting lol.

Is PlayYou any good? I've seen some of Jae Seok's other limited variety shows, like "The Zone" and "Busted" (both of which Gwang Soo was on! WTH Gwang Soo?!) and they were fun. You'd think he could bring some of those ideas to Running Man to freshen things up, lol.

4

reply

Required fields are marked *

I liked PlayYou. I was surprised by how many commenters were always telling him to stop talking as if A- talking ISN'T his thing B- he wasn't hosting a one man show meaning he has to talk and engage.

I liked The Zone: Survival Mission & Busted.

One of the funniest episodes of The Zone was when they had to stay on a bed for 4 hours.

3

Can’t remember which episode it was but they mentioned how people always ask for the name tag game but when they do an episode with that game, those somehow end up getting low ratings. Don’t know if anyone has checked that claim.

The water games are good, those are usually funny. I also enjoy their English-only guessing games but that would probably get boring over time.

4

The "they're just eating (and eating, and eating...) has stayed in my head since I saw this and makes me randomly chuckle haha

Doom got a bum rap in the comments when it aired. If a drama doesn't fit your preconceived notions that's not the fault of the drama but a fault of your own. People knew from the previews it was about a dying girl's relation to the personification of doom. That doesn't sound like a happy-go-luck rom-com premise.

The fall weather always gets me itching to travel. This time, I really want to go to South Korea. Now that I can read Korean characters (slowly), I feel more confidant about going. I wish there was a drama + food tour that takes you to a prison where you eat a bowl of beef bone soup with radish kimchi on the side in the interrogation room with a hot detective by your side, and jajangmyun in the cell with cops busy at their desks, and when you finally get freed by your handsome lawyer, who greets you with a steaming slab of fresh made tofu at the entrance. Of all the tropes, I don't know why the prison food trope interests me the most lol.

Recently I tallied up the number of kdramas this year that I've watched that contain some sort of supernatural element--superpowers, time travel, curses, reincarnation, unearthly beings, etc. etc. and I came up with roughly 20, of 30 total dramas. Besides showing what a pathetically limited life I lead, that I've spent well over 500 hours watching Korean t.v. this year, and that's not counting hours spent watching sports and Australian lesbian serial killer comedies, I was wondering about those 20 fantasies I've watched.

I've been watching them because they are often advertised as fantasy ROMANCES, and one thing that's true, is that this year the fantasy Romance has almost totally replaced the gritty real life romances I usually go for, like King the Land. But I also wonder if there haven't been more fantasy romances this year than usual, and whether that's just a cyclical thing, or whether it indicates some sort of kdrama trend.

I've also noticed that a lot of them are based on webtoons, and while I know that webtoons have always been a fruitful source of kdramas, has that become an even more common inspiration for kdramas, as writers desperately scramble for new material?

I was thinking that maybe the use of webtoons and fantasy plot devices was because they easily translate into international contexts, as opposed to more real life shows that deal humorously or seriously with Korean social problems, and so wouldn't be as appealing as superpowers, curses, ghosts, vampires, time travel, etc that are fantasies in every culture. But it could be that fantasy has always been central to kdramas, and I'm just noticing it more.
Is there anyone who has thoughts on why, (or if) supernatural fantasy has been so common this year?

9
26
reply

Required fields are marked *

This. I am really missing “real-life” settings like Marriage, Not Dating, Hospital Playlist or Secretary Kim, etc. It feels like every new show this year has time travel and reincarnation and/or the features you mentioned. My friend suggests that it’s because kdrama is notorious for seeing one success and then piling on with copies (like the years that feel like every show is lawyers and so on). I have been wondering what is so wrong in SK life that everyone needs to be entertained w fantasy components. (My viewing is limited to would-be romances as well, so I’m not counting the realistic crime shows). (And yes, I know many answers to what is so wrong in SK life.)
So, phhhttttt, I’m with you on this! Please bring back more reality!

Required fields are marked *

Wait, does something have to be wrong in your life to be watching fantasy? 😰 I don’t watch a plethora of fantasy dramas but 90% of what I read is fantasy and frankly I don’t find that any stranger than those who read mystery novels or romance novels. It’s just a genre of fiction, nothing more or less.

I’ll be honest, I don’t see a show like Business Proposal as being any more realistic than something that involves magic or the supernatural.

It’s a trend. I think that’s as deep as it gets.

11
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

@mindy There are many who prefer fantasy--I wasn't saying there was anything wrong with that!

The only thing I was noting is that it seemed there were a greater number of fantasies out there this year. I could be wrong about that, but if it is a trend, it does seem to me to need some explanation--either about the writers who find it the best way to get the story across, or, as I was thinking might be the case, executives who are looking for the biggest international audience possible and find supernatural stories have a global appeal. But I'm not sure what the explanation is.

And of course, every show is a fantasy of some sort of another. You are right, the story of someone turning into a dog is just as realistic as imagining lovers fated to be tragically torn apart in the Joseon era. You have to admit, though, the plot devices used to propel the story are a little different, and that's why I think its useful to distinguish magic and supernatural from a story that uses events that might have conceivably occurred or have a chance of occurring.

So the point is not about realism (that's why I joked, in a way that obviously failed) about the "realism" of King the Land. Instead its whether you tell a story of a chaebol hotel executive falling in love with a concierge, or whether you imagine the concierge grabbing client butts to find out what has happened in their lives.

Interesting post, hacja, fellow "spends many hours watching K-dramas" chingu. An early K-drama I watched was 49 Tears, which had a new-to-me cultural afterlife element that the drama played on. It was fascinating. So while I would say I am not a fantasy genre reader, I do like (and have watched) many fantasy/supernatural K-dramas. This surprises friends and family all the time, but somehow I am drawn in. The only element that is not my style is zombies. 🦉 anyhoot!

I, for one, prefer real life romances. I think the reason why many of these dramas do not get the ratings they deserve is because some people avoid such dramas. Don't judge me, but because of what I believe in, I am uncomfortable with watching a drama with a lead having a relationship with another lead who's reincarnated, a god, demon, etc. There may be a lot like me.

I miss the rom-coms of the old days. That's why I truly enjoyed dramas like King the Land, Buisiness Proposal, CLOY, 25/21. I don't mind the tropes.

I think Kdramas work by cycle... this year the main theme was fantasy. But sometimes, it's lawyer, doctor, sageuk,...

I just hope 2024 trend is all romcoms and slice of life.

I wouldn't mind having a year full of shows like SWLouie, Still 17, Fight For My Way, MLNotes, Be Melo, and Gaus Electronics. 🤭

I don't mind fantasy. Alchemy of Souls was thrilling with a completely new "world" and "magic rules" - until, that is, they changed the rules and forgot the history of that new world.

And that's the difference in my mind between a really outstanding fantasy romance drama and a mediocre one that relies too much on the CGI/top star billing/whatever.

I just finished The Master's Sun (thanks to the Beannie who mentioned it) and although it wasn't perfect (too many "break-ups"), the story held together to the end, the "ghost rules" did not change or evolve, and the fantasy elements remained consistent. Plus, side stories of various ghosts, side characters with their own stories - it all came together in the end.

Color me shocked when I discovered the Hong Sisters wrote it.

The retconning of fantasy rules are the one major put-off. Don't just keep pulling out new rules every two seconds - looking at you Catman from Heart ♥ Beat.

Oh! Now that you mentioned it Hong Sisters have come a long way since The Master's Sun but no one can beat So Ji-sub's Joo Jоong-won and his immortal "kkeojyeo" with hand gesture for emphasis!

@Seeker Perhaps you were the one who suggested The Master's Sun. And to add to my point above, I never cared too much for either main lead or their romance; in fact, as is frequently my problem, i was more interested in the second couple. But regardless of the main leads, I watched to the end because the main STORY - the and side stories (ghosts) - kept me interested.

And when I mentioned Hong Sisters, it was in regard to Alchemy of Souls - a total clusterf**k of new magic rules, forgotten character development. . . I doubt if I will ever watch another one of their dramas again while it airs.

Oh I agree, got little sidetracked by So Ji-sub. 😀

I meant Hong Sisters have come a long way since then and have forgotten that the drama needs to comply with the set rules and work within that framework. One cannot just nilly willy change the fantasy rules or get writers amnesia about it.

I showed a group picture of myself at the Lee Seung Gi concert I went to and my sister laughed at me being the youngest person in the group. (I was also the only black person)

This is a small thing but it's just an example of how I can't share my interest with people in my life. They don't care or they laugh or they mock. That's why I haven't even talked about it with people aside from people in the group or vaguely here. I don't even attempt to talk about the fact I watch kdramas.

I just mention scenarios or situations I've seen on variety shows (mainly Running Man) and the first question is "do you speak korean?"

Going to a concert with a group of friends sounds amazing. It is hard to get a group together to talk to in real life like us beanies but hopefully you are able to find some k drama friends online who are local enough or have a similar time zone so you can chat to them offsite. We did that with the K drama watch and discuss club.

I find it fascinating how many African countries have had K drama as part of their entertainment offer for years. Whereas in the UK it was a relatively recent find for me. I have met quite a few K drama fans amongst my contacts just by chance because I am always discussing what I am watching so don’t give up there are plenty of us Black fans out there.

One of the therapists I follow online organised a K drama filming sites tour in September and October and if I wasn’t already booked to be on a trip later this year I would have gone on that trip as another way to link with fellow K drama fans.

One of the things I'm most impressed by with K-dramas is the diversity of the audience they attract. In fact much of the time (maybe even most of the time?) I'm more impressed by the commentators on Dramabeans than I am by the kdramas!

As for being unable to share your interests with friends and family, that is very common, I can tell you, no matter what age you are.

Even my children laugh at me and I don't even bother to mention what I'm watching to my friends, (outside of my good friends I've met through kdramas.)

One strategy you might try is one that I use when I'm getting ridiculed by acquaintances who do find out. I tell the people who are laughing that I watch kdramas and listen to kpop because I'm studying global trends in popular media, and also because of my deep, intellectual interest in Korean history and culture. And that's why I have to sing along with New Jeans while I am watching Strong Girl Nam Soon. (No, don't add that part).

I didn't go to the concert with them; I met them there. I went alone. It was a real experience for me because I'm scared of flying and I flew cross country by myself. Honestly, meeting other fans added to the experience of the concert even more than seeing him cause it's the only time I've ever gotten to talk about him or any Korean stuff in an engaged way. I tried talking about Heartbeat, not much but I was saying it broke my heart but folks were like "NO SPOILERS!" so I just kept the conversation mainly on Seung Gi haha

It is indeed so meaningful and one feels so heard to be able to talk in detail about our mutual K-drama love.

One can freely express their thoughts, emotions and feelings about a particular drama or celeb or just chat generally.

Even if someone disagrees with you, the Beanies would simple state their view point and not try to invalidate your views or try to attack you personally.

This is most definitely a remarkable little corner of the internet which we all cherish and want to protect.

😅 that is why I have two tabs open - since after posting a comment I go back to page 1, I close that tab, go to the previously opened tab at pages and click relevant page where I had posted and scroll down!!

I'm doing it and will keep doing it till hopefully our DB pagination is settled.

My family and friends know I watch K-dramas and enjoy them but they don't know how deep I'm in. They have no idea I spend days and nights reading Dramabeans and other sites, and sometimes posting too. They sometimes praise me for remembering actors' names, and must think I watch a lot, only I know that the numbers of K-dramas I have watched is nothing compared to other beanies here, because I spend a lot of time rewatching. But when you spend that much time reading about K-dramas, you'll naturally remember actors' names even for those you haven't watched.

When they ask me what my fav shows are, I always say Strangers 1, 2 and that'll put an end to the discussion (as I expected haha) as no one in my family and friend circle has watched that. Their fav are the popular shows like What's wrong with Secretary Kim, CLOY.... I may have watched those shows too but I don't have the need to talk to anyone in real life about K-dramas, except my bestie. I don't live in the same city country as my bestie, but every now and then we text each other about shows we are watching. Our fav genres are different but we are both hard core introverts and share the same perspectives of life, so we understand each other well and share the love for K-dramas. Her lifelong fav actor is Wookie while mine changes every now and then haha.

Recently, while browsing instagram, I found an account devoted to my fav actor. Then I realised she's from my home country too, so we started messaging each other and we've been having really good times sharing info and chatting about trivia that we'd have no chance to if we didn't meet the right person. I always find it amazing and wonderful that K-drama lovers speak the same language regardless of where we are from.

Nevertheless as @enriquequierecagar has rightly stated "beanies are here. We'll listen and share the joy with you. Fighting!"

Hi, beanies de mi corazón. 💚
I hope you had a great week!

Next week I'm going to visit my bestie. Her graduation is tomorrow! So we decided to hang out next week to celebrate.

I have to make a 4h trip to get there. Just thinking about it makes me want to cry. LOL
I hate traveling. It's such a traumatic experience for me... I hate having to spend more than 30min in a vehicle just to get somewhere! And thinking about the weather makes everything worse. That city is hell. When you get out of the shower you're wet with sweat. T.T I won't even get started with the transportation...

That's why I told all my friends that if they wanted to see my friends they had to visit me. LOl When my mom moved here 5 years ago, I was annoyed because we don't have family or friends here.
But that motived me to be good to my friends, because I knew that after graduation we wouldn't be able to see each other again that often.

So I'm dead serious when I say they have to visit me if they want to see me again. 😂 This is the last time I'm going, and only because it's her.

Anyway, I can't wait to see my bestie!! We're gonna have so much fun! This is the first time in a while that hanging out doesn't consist of laying in bed and ordering food. We do that a lot. LOL The last time we saw each other she just slept and I read webtoons.
We're way too lazy. 😆

Have a nice weekend, beanies! ✌️ I love how every time I write "weekend", the next word the autocorrect function suggest's "beanies".

Oh, I feel the pain! The shows offered by streaming services in my region seem to be only a fraction of what is actually out there. Plus there’s the translation or changing of titles (whyyyyyyy) etc. It all starts with googling, lol 😅

But, other than show acronyms, I wanted to mention that there’s actually a glossary of terms, that are frequently used throughout articles (and in comments), which helped me when I joined Dramabeans: https://www.dramabeans.com/about-old/glossary/
Sadly, I think it’s not being updated any more, but I still find it very helpful! (It’s linked in the “Resources” section of this page, in case you haven’t stumbled across it yet!)

We've all complained about K-drama rom coms having slasher/serial killer sides stories. It gets on peoples nerves. But one thing I noticed is after the crime story get wrapped up and the drama reverts to romance interest in the series drops off. 'That last episode of (Lovely Liar, as an example) was just romance stuff - yuck!' But you had been complaining about the crime story interrupting the romance! There's just no pleasing some people. :-)

Maybe - maybe - it would help if those rom-coms had no slasher/serial killer in the first place. I can think of some recent examples of shows that had little or none of that and no corresponding drop-off.

They exasperate me no end and I don't really get the point, but I keep hunting down more of his films to watch. I'm reminded of a description of eating Pyongyang cold noodles (from the series 'Mello Is My Nature'). When you first try them you think 'There's no taste! What's all the fuss about?' Then three days later you wake up in the middle of the night suddenly craving Pyongyang cold noodles again.

I’ve been thinking about how fragile our connections to each other are on DB no matter the pleasure we det from our interactions: Anonymous (some of you might have connected outside of DB but I always worry it is not the done thing to ask people to pierce their anonymity no matter how much fun it would be to meet my DB mates), facilitated (or not) by a creaky tech system and dependent on the whims of the owners. If any of us disappears, we can’t find out how they are until and if they come back. All of this and a few other things have made me feel melancholic. Somethings are ephemeral and they shouldn’t be. Other things last a life time and they should be over in the blink of an eye.

I don't even know if anyone will see or engage with this at this point but I just saw a scenario on Running Man and wanted other people's perspectives.
The situation they're debating is "who's most at fault". 3 guys arrange to hang out at a bar. Guy 1 gets there first and orders snacks & high end alcohol. Guys 2 & 3 come together but Guy 2 leaves after a couple of minutes cause he made plans with his girlfriend for the same day/time and now she's outside waiting for him. Guy 3 doesn't drink but he eats the snacks and instagrams the hangout. Guy 1 continues getting drinks and the guys have a good time hanging out. Time to pay the bill and Guy 3 pays for the snacks (or the snacks he ate) giving about ~5 dollars) meanwhile Guy 1 says they should split the bill since they both hung out & had a good time.

As the situation was being described, the RM members were already calling Guy 2 trash and then they said Guy 3 just ruined the friendship.

What are your thoughts?

1
4
reply

Required fields are marked *

This is interesting as it doesn’t seem like the guys know each other well enough to have been out on a regular basis so this sounds like a first experience for them. Guy 2 should have said he had double booked by mistake and to make up for it left some money to cover a drink for each friend. Guy 3 should have said he wouldn’t be drinking but wanted to have fun with his friends. Guy 1 as the only drinker should pay for his own drinks, why should the other person cover his half his bill especially as he chose high end drinks as his personal preference? I am aware that it is cultural how people cover this kind of situation though so if it’s usual to split the bill regardless then guy 3 is going to be seen as being cheap.

I was in the camp of paying for what you actually ate. That's how my mother taught me actually. Even this year, we went to a big dinner and the first thing she did was tell the waiter to have separate checks. It did cause some friction with the way she did it.

On Running Man, the general consenus was Guy 1 was most at fault because he got expensive liquor on his own and planned on putting that on other people to pay (at least in part) without discussing it beforehand. I was surprised by people saying Guy 2 should've left money for his fair share; he wasn't even there for anything! He didn't drink or eat snacks. He basically just went hi & bye.

1
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

For me with Guy 2 it was the fact that his friends and girlfriend both booked him and him popping in to say hi and that he wouldn’t be staying was bad form. He could have given more notice and he blatantly was showing he prioritised one over the other, if it was the girlfriend who got blanked we know he would have had to make up for that too so why not try to ease any bad feeling by treating the friends to a drink in his absence? If he had given more notice then I wouldn’t expect him to pay anything.
I don’t drink and I am vegan so I get annoyed with the ‘let’s split the bill’ approach as most people drink alcohol and have meat dishes that are usually a lot more than my meal and drink, so it’s an uneven distribution in their favour.
