[K-drama Treasure Hunt] Reading manhwa together

Welcome to the K-drama treasure hunt, where we all go looking for K-drama treasure in the form of tiny drama details that we know and love. Sometimes these details take the shape of well-worn tropes (oppa Band-Aiding) or storytelling devices (Top Secret Deadly Allergy), but other times it’s just details we know we’ve seen in other dramas, but need help putting all the clues together.

Each week we’ll put you on the hunt for a piece of K-drama treasure, and you can report your findings in the comments.

There’s no umpire in this game, so if you find the detail we’re looking for, drop the drama title (or even better, drama title + episode number) in the comments, and we’ll all take your word for it. Or, we’ll go binge watch just to see it play out.

And remember, we’re here to map our way to the treasures not to the plot twists! We know how exciting as it can be to have all the hard-earned details stashed in your head, but let’s try to keep the spoilers out of the comments.

This week’s treasure:

Reading manhwa together

Your mission:

Manhwa is essential reading for many a K-drama character, but the experience isn’t complete until they have someone to share their favorite stories with. The iconic rooftop scene in Just Between Lovers wouldn’t have the same spark if our leads weren’t up there together, reading comics, drinking warm beer, and getting to know each other. This week, we’re looking for all the scenes where characters read manhwa together, be they couples or friends.

Reference drama:

Just Between Lovers (Episode 4)

In the movie Tune in Love, there was a scene where Jung Hae-In and Kim Go-Eun are reading manhwas together.

In She Would Never Know, the ML takes his niece in the bookshop and the scene is super cute!

Woah, I totally overlooked you mentioned Tune In already! Such a good movie. Then again, there’s Jung Hae-in, so… what could go wrong? 😆

Only thing I remember about the movie is these little kindergarteners in yellow raincoats entering the bakery chanting quack quack! 🦆 🦆

- Into The Ring/Memorials >>> a manhwa shop was the headquarter where our trio of girls hang out, read manhwa, and plan political campaigns

- Delightfully Deceitful >>> similarly, one character owns a manhwa rental/shop where lots of things happened, but mostly not the cordial type... maybe only 3 characters actually enjoyed the manhwa there

- Run On >>> there's a (supposedly) cute scene where the two villainous fathers read manhwa + eat ramen together

* In KTL, there’s a scene where everyone is in the public sauna, and two friends (Pyeonghwa & forgot-her-name) read manwhas lying down to relax, while our OTP plans the first official date.
* Not a drama, but a movie: OTP reading manwhas together in TUNE IN FOR LOVE.
* And I’m pretty sure there’s this scene also in FIGHT MY WAY and/or WEIGHTLIFTING FAIRY, but I might be mistaken……. It’s all too blurry in my mind.

Twenty Five Twenty One. Hee-do and Yu-rim liked the same Manhwa or Manga? I’m not sure if they read it together, however I do remember the scene where Hee-do runs to borrow the latest copy, I kinda felt called out as it was so relatable lol 😅

Full House was the name of that manwa in Twenty Five Twenty One.
That manwa was such a vital link to the plot. Not just Ko Yu-Rim and Na Hee-Do, but it also linked Baek Yi-Jin and Hee-Do’s mom.
The heartbreaking episode when Hee-Do’s mom rips up Full House in front of Hee-Do 😢. That hurt and reminded me of my mother.
The heartwarming episode where Yi-Jin reapppears in Hee-Do’s life when he drops his copy of full house and Hee-Do picks it up in a crowd of people. 🥹
Ahhh gawd I miss that show.

Ho Gu's Love.
I think in a flashback they were shown reading comics together.

True Beauty.
I'm sure of this one. They went to one of those nice comic shops that has like beds and food and stuff.

One Dollar Lawyer had the ML and his friend fanboying over the same manhwa and avoiding spoilers like crazy.

W - Two Worlds, every episode - this has to be the ultimate example. The plot is driven by an in-show manwha, the characters keep switching between the manwha and real worlds, and some of the key developments are driven by what they learn from reading the manwha. All of the main characters and pretty much everyone else in the background are constantly reading it together in offices, elevators, buses, etc.

There’s a running joke throughout You From Another Star with two minor characters reading/being opinionated doofuses at the FL’s best friend’s manhwa store.

If I say Extraordinary You is that cheating? I think there is a moment though when Dan-oh and SML who's name I'm blanking on are looking at the character list page after gaining 'consciousness' in the comic!
