[K-drama Treasure Hunt] Flowery clothing in the countryside

Welcome to the K-drama treasure hunt, where we all go looking for K-drama treasure in the form of tiny drama details that we know and love. Sometimes these details take the shape of well-worn tropes (oppa Band-Aiding) or storytelling devices (Top Secret Deadly Allergy), but other times it’s just details we know we’ve seen in other dramas, but need help putting all the clues together.

Each week we’ll put you on the hunt for a piece of K-drama treasure, and you can report your findings in the comments.

There’s no umpire in this game, so if you find the detail we’re looking for, drop the drama title (or even better, drama title + episode number) in the comments, and we’ll all take your word for it. Or, we’ll go binge watch just to see it play out.

And remember, we’re here to map our way to the treasures not to the plot twists! We know how exciting as it can be to have all the hard-earned details stashed in your head, but let’s try to keep the spoilers out of the comments.

This week’s treasure:

Flowery clothing in the countryside.

Your mission:

Direct us to all those scenes where characters find themselves in the countryside wearing someone else’s flower-print pants. This is usually because their own clothes have been ruined in one way or another and a doting ajumma has been so kind as to offer some of her extras. (Remember when our King the Land pair was in this predicament?) Pants, shirts, vests — if it’s flowery and likely came from an ajumma, it counts in this round.

Reference drama:

King the Land (Episode 3)

One of my favorite instances of this recently came from one of my least favorite dramas, The Bad Mother. There are two thugs who need to go undercover in the countryside town where the ML is living since losing his memory, and they are quite bad at it. So they end up buying land and the next time we see them, they are legitimately farming it in complete flowery outfits. They were such a weird bright point in a dark and terrible drama!

They really were a bright light in the darkness.
The villagers were always in those outfits but they were so irritating it doesn’t really count.

Just one is ringing in my head - Song Seung-hoon in Dinner Mate episode 1&2.

That’s really funny because he is convinced the female lead purposely chose that outfit. Wherever he goes people see the outfit and think he is an Halmoni until he comes up close and starts talking.

Add in the fact that he was right about his conviction and you have more fun.

She was pretty had a scene like that. Lead couple didn't have money to pay for their meal and had to help a countryside elder.

Since Hometown Cha Cha Cha was one of countryside Kdramas, I didn't remember the episodes where Shin Min-ah wore some floral dresses and of course, there was a fourth episode where Doo-shik (Kim Seon-ho) wore floral shirt during jail visit.

Hometown Cha Cha Cha> When the leads are doing the laundry and when the ML asked for a shirt to a cop and got a flower shirt.

Cheer up (2022) episode 10 the cheerleading team goes to help their leader whose mum runs a place in a seaside town and they work at the market on various stalls and perform on stage in their Ajumma outfits.

This one had me smiling. Thanks @dramaddictally!

Because This Life Is Our First, episode 11. Nam Se-hee goes to the countryside to participate in Yoon Ji-ho's family kimjang...arriving, of course, inappropriately attired for actually helping to make the kimchi (but nicely attired for the male tradition in that family of sitting around while others do the work).

So, since he's definitely there to work (plot point), he is offered clothes to wear from Ji-ho's family household, including some fantastic flowered pants.

It's also worth mentioning, I feel, that the chartreuse jacket over the fuschia zippered sweatshirt he wears to match these flowery trousers prove to be absolutely fetching colors on Lee Min-ki!!

Now how come I had to scroll all the way down to your comment to see someone mention this most iconic moment, Seon-ha!

I can always count on you to mention BTIMFL.

Fun fact: if you watch the behind-the-scenes for that episode, he ripped his ajumma pants during filming fjsksjdjd

Fact: I've only ever seen two K-dramas.

BTLIOF and Itaewon Class.

Everything else I've said about any other drama has just been something where I thought, "Well, this sounds about right?" 😏

I’m sure there’s lots of male characters in Kdramas in flowery pants (making kimchi??), but this was the one that popped into my mind first 🤣🤣

Just any episode of Top Star Yoo Baek, I guess.

Probably with the same for dramas with Shin Min Ah being mistreated by random people in the countryside: Our Blues and H Cha Cha Cha.

The drama with Eric and Chewbacca (Waikiki) and a kid?? Where he's a Chef... Chef Moon? That one.

I just fast forwarded through a few episodes because I was convinced he went native at one point but can’t see him anywhere in proper ajumma outfits. There is one scene where his expensive ripped jeans were covered in patterned patches by the female lead’s grandmother but I didn't find a clip of him wearing them.

Ohhh, I remember the patches! I'll try to find him wearing the pants. I think it's something impossible to avoid in those type of dramas.

Watched Chef Moon and sartorial mishaps I still remember until now were him mistakenly lending her the kid's (understandably too tight) underwear and her catching him in his underwear and half a trouser ><

I don't remember the show that well, I only remember it was cute. Maybe I should rewatch a few episodes.

This one was not a case of wearing someone else's pants but I think the effect was the same: Kim Do Gi in Taxi driver 2 played a country bumpkin in one of his mission, where he wore flower-print pants by choice :)) And one beanie (I'm sorry I can't recall who right now) called him tractor driver 😂

Here he is

So Ji-sub in My secret, Terrius, episodes 23-24.

Although I forgot almost everything about this atrocious drama, you cannot unsee So Ji-sub in flowery ahjumma-clothes.

In Taxi driver 2, they're two episodes of Country Bumpkin Lee Je Hoon.
In Zombie detective, our zombie borrows a few clothes.
In Café Minamdang, Seo In Guk manages to look good in full flowery pink ensemble.
In Crash landing on you, I'm not sure Se Ri really appreciate the flowers, but she takes what she is offered.

My memory is not sure, and I do not have it in my table... is it in Secret Terrius or in Man to Man that the secret agent borrows a few flowery clothes while on the run?

In Oh My Baby episode 5, the OTP were stranded overnight in the country when the drama gave them a conveniently timed landslide. Go Joon in his flowery elegance (top and bottom!) being all manly with chopped woods is a sight to see, especially when it turned out fire isn't even necessary since the inn has gas stove!

In COFFEE PRINCE, Eun Chan and Han Gyul both wear ahjumma pants when they are talking in the middle of the night on their apple picking trip.

In CRASH COURSE IN ROMANCE, Choi Chi Yeol wakes up on the couch wearing ahjumma pants after a night of drinking with Haeng Sun when she is upset after getting her brother out of jail.
