Live Your Own Life: Episodes 16-17 (Drama Highlights)

Once again, Hyo-shim is nowhere close to achieving the dream of an independent life. With a hundred thousand dollars (!!) of her savings drained by her mom, Hyo-shim is forced to return to the loan sharks to make up the balance of Hyo-joon’s settlement. Of course, like the stuck-up dolt he is, Hyo-joon thinks Mi-rim pretended to be a lawyer to get the victim to settle, and not a single word of gratitude escapes his lips. Instead — after a “who is the worst son?” argument with his brothers — he blames Mi-rim for butting in when she should have allowed him to go to prison. By the way, we learn that Hyo-joon directed a few films in the past, and as an aspiring actress, Mi-rim is all the more interested in him. But I think the show is doing a disservice to Mi-rim by trying to pair her up with Hyo-joon because he doesn’t deserve her. Not with that attitude of his.

The brothers’ argument also leads to a rift between Hyo-do and Tae-hee, and Hyo-do moves out of their apartment. For someone who raised concerns about the source of Tae-hee’s money, Hyo-do has no problem planning to start a new business by selling off the luxury watch she bought for him. Tsk. Looks like he learnt nothing from his previous failed business. At least, Tae-hee seems to be slowly maturing and serious about getting her life together. As for Hyo-sung, nothing much has changed on the home front. But at work, he has been transferred from Tae-ho’s team to a new (and seemingly made up) department as per Sook-hyang’s grand plan of destabilizing Tae-ho. Notwithstanding, Tae-ho is getting by just fine, and his sportswear launch is a hit.

Tae-min doesn’t mind that his cousin is doing well at work, but he draws the line at Tae-ho getting Hyo-shim to model for the brand — and being friends with her generally. But Tae-ho reiterates that he doesn’t need Tae-min’s permission when it comes to Hyo-shim. Tae-min’s obsession with Hyo-shim has finally thrown her into the direct line of fire with Soo-kyung and Sook-hyang — who is pissed off that her son is in love with a woman who has the audacity to make him wait. Jeez! In the meantime, Sook-hyang reveals that Halmeoni is alive to stop her husband’s sorrow-induced drinking sessions. But with Chairman Kang in such a volatile state, I wonder if that’s a good idea.

I found it sort of almost romantic to propose farting in front of each other - which I think is quite an intimate thing to do.

HyoShim isn't really a pushover. She stands her ground when dealing with the world at large, including a couple of chaebol suitors. It's her family she lets walk all over her and that's what make her character so relatable. However, the latest reveal of her mother spending 10 years worth of her savings has shaken her up. If this doesn't make her revolt, then she deserves what's happening to her. Because being kind means letting people face the consequences of their actions and learning their lessons - letting them get away with wrongdoings is just encouraging them to do more of it.

HyoJun is becoming more and more unbearable with every episode. The jerk can't bring himself to thank those who went out of their way to help him. Instead, he blames everyone for his misfortunes except himself. He is delusional enough to tell himself that he is studying law only coz his mother has forced him to do so - the mother he looks at with utter contempt 🙄 So he directed a few short films? Ha! Isn't managing people one of the prerequisites of being a director? This guy offends everyone he speaks to. It's silly as a plot point to keep MiRim around him, but better him helping her become an actress than her helping him become a lawyer.

TaeHee has finally decided to support herself and is actively working towards it, but HyoDo still wants to be spoonfed and be 'successful' without putting in any hard work. He was lucky that his earlier decency towards a homeless girl earned him enough points that TaeHee was willing to put up with his lazy ass. But of course his victim-of-a-less-than-perfect-childhood self couldn't do something as menial as actual work. He is going to get scammed again, isn't he?

I feel sorry for the eldest brother. He is stuck between a rock and a hard place. It isn't easy for a man when his mother and wife are both overbearing, and he is trying to keep both of them happy. Though his wife isn't wrong in nagging him about always giving in to his mother's unreasonable tantrums.

The good thing this week was some development between TaeHo and HyoShim. And TaeHo proving himself at work! I whooped when he told TaeMin he isn't going to discuss anything about HyoShim with him. Enough of TaeMin walking around believing he owns HyoShim just because he likes her.

PS. If there's one thing TaeHo needs to learn from TaeMin, it is to sleep shirtless!

He would be one of the "old bachelors" from The Matchmakers. Like half of them were still trying to pass the state exams and in their late 20s/early 30s and still want a young (probably under 21..since the youngest old maiden in that drama is 21) and pretty wife.

She is a hustler for sure 😄 I quite like her for the way she is standing up to her powerful mother and living her life on her own terms. She may be blamed for keeping quiet about her grandmother, but that's what she has to hold over her mother's head if she has to escape the fate of marriage to a much older man. She may be spoilt, but she is willing to learn and work hard.

I like her . Her picture of halmoni lost some value with mom’s reveal to the drunk chairman.

2

Regarding Tae Hui building a nest , all those eggs….

She isn’t going to be in a motherly way is she ?

Her and Hyo-do are cohabitating …

Speaking of which, Tae-Ho piggybacking Hyo-shim contemplated the Love Motel for convenience for a brief moment.
That alone, being seen leaving a love hotel with a client would be enough to ruin her career.

2

I absolutely adore the Tae Ho and Hyo Shim scenes, they just gel so well together. Ha Jun totally nailed the "rendered speechless while watching her walk in slow mo" scene, comedy piggy back scene and his hilarious expression as he sat on a bench with the passed out Hyo Shim on his lap. Too bad they gave us crumbs again in episode 17. More please, more! Tae Ho is dialling up his charm level to 11 now but she's got too much on her plate.

I liked how Hyo-shim firmly rejected Tae-min without any drama.
And while I liked that Tae-min told her for how long he has been yearning for her, how long she's been living rent-free in his head - in secret of course, - I wished he just gave her that information and stopped pursuing. Like giving himself that closure to that chapter of his life. At least what was in the case was not a ring.

Hyo-shim's mother's unapologetic tantrum rang longer than I could bear. Hyo-shim, a brat. You empty her account and you're raving at her to go find the settlement money - the insolence. How many times will I say I'm done😩.

I liked how Hyo-shim firmly rejected Tae-min without any drama.

Sorry/not sorry, but she didn't reject "him" - she indicated that because of her family issues, "love was a luxury" right now {and that's exact words from KBS PR release]. And then she continued to hold onto the box - which was a hair clip he purchased years ago.

I recognize that Hyo Shim is not a strong person - she only understands "doormat" function. I want her to break free. But DAMN, don't prolong Tae Min's misery.

Mom's villainy is unsurpassed in my kdrama viewing. And I do NOT mean Tae Min/Tae Hee's mother.

Don't think HyoShim can reject him more firmly than she has, coz in her position she can't afford to antagonize him. He is a chaebol and the biggest client of her gym. Most men can't take rejection well, and in her mind there is always the chance that he may turn on her and destroy her career/reputation. She has done her bit by saying 'no' politely. If he wants to continue liking her, it's not her problem.

@unit, thanks for the highlights !
Hyo-shim has about as many drinking episodes as the Chairman ‼️
Drinking to blackout is not good Hyo-shim 🤔
Tae-Ho treats Hyo-shim as a person, (although his aegyo is off putting)
Tae-Min treats Hyo-Shim as property ?
Marking his territory like a Tom cat 🐱, Throw an old 🥾 at him to chase him off.
Speaking of cats and catty behavior, Ms Choi shows her claws and fangs.
Tight clothes and touching 🙄 she insinuates Hyo-shim is unprofessional.
She might become rabid with 2FL Syndrome possibly with an Evil enhancement .
Landlady ahjumma bugs the heck out of Rooftop
Ga On triggers her father by singing Trot
Ru-bi making plans with her oppa
Hyo-Do is breaking Tae-Hui’s heart
Hyo-shim should sell Hyo-Do’s watch and keep the cash. Kick his ass if he says anything .
Hyo-Joon was a director so now the lawyer/actress/waitress swoons⁉️ 🙄 Her character’s likability just took a severe blow 😟
Chairman rages against his wife’s antics
Oldest Oppa gets a empty office with zero staff, not suspicious yet🙄

I do hope the seemingly endless trouble for Hyo-shim lets up.

They did mention a competitor gym opening nearby.
What if Hyo-shim’s dad is the owner of gym ?

2

I think her dad was some non-PE subject high school teacher.

The new gym owner seems to be opened by a former colleague. I think after hearing that news, Hyo-shim went to drink away her sorrows because now someone else is living out her dream while she's back to square 1.

3

Dad was an attorney (from a non-wealthy family) who was pressured to marry into Mom's upper middle class family. He taught ETHICS, of all things, at nearby highschool.

I thought he would appear by now. 😒

3

If Hyo-shim’s father has amnesia, (which can be reversed) ,as per drama rules.
On another thread some proven amnesia reversing methods were discussed, they are:
Head Trauma *Counteracts the original trauma
Food Items *bonus if from youth
Sound of flowers *Good for recurring amnesia
Wedding Rings *Large silver ones work best
Family Photographs * Pic of Psycho Dad w/family
Songs/Music * bonus if from youth
Old school Walkman w/cassette tape. * Technically a Time Machine , it does however involve music and memories. So it’s allowed

1

Just a theory: Hyo Sim's dad disappearing is related to Tae Ho's parents dead. Also dead as casual victim? Dead but maybe a suspect and could break the couple?

It could be simple: missing dad went past the breaking point of his wife and left the family to "live his own life."

A more unlikable bunch of people I have rarely seen in a drama. Let's start with the queen of the bunch, the mother. I have never seen a more unappreciative, selfish, overbearing, annoying parent. I almost felt pity for the second son, but not quite. He is just as unappreciative as his mother. The wanna actress should stay away from him. He is just a male version of his mother.

And the youngest brother isn't much better. I thought they would make a cute couple, but he just dropped her like a dirty sock. After all she did for him. All he wants is for success to be handed over to him on a silver platter and he is not willing to put in the work. I guess being ungrateful runs in that family. They must have learned this from the horrible mother.

Tae Min needs to read the room, he is borderline delusional. I do feel sorry for Tae Ho. He is lonely, feels as he has no family, and is trying to befriend her. I'm sure he would like to be more than that, but at least he is doing it correctly, by offering friendship, unlike his cousin.

Dumpster Granny is beyond annoying, and I totally relate to Rooftop Granny, wanting her to GTFO. I might have to start FF during her scenes.

My favourite relationship right now is Rooftop Granny and the little girl. She is adorable, and they have a great rapport. What is that song she sings, that her father objects to? I would love to hear the full version. It sounds like a vintage song, the type Frank Sinatra would sing.

Here is the story on Ga On's mother, according to Namu Wiki (a bit spoilerish I guess):

"She used to be the most successful woman in Tenpro but now she is in decline (?), and while working in a provincial town, she sees Gaon on television and comes to her."

Thanks to a poster on MDL (@kalenahenden) I learned that "Ten Pro" are exclusive adult establishments that are infamous in Korea for catering to only the richest in Korean society. The name “Tenpro,” which literally means 10% in Korea, was given to these establishments because it is said only the most beautiful 10% of women can work there. " That is - high-class brothels.

I think Park Woo Jin is her grandfather. But I could be wrong, of course. 😂😎

And if I haven't bored you yet, Ga-on is portrayed by Kim Yu Ha who is quite the phenom in Korea. According to MDL, "In 2022, she appeared on "King of Mask Singer" and narrowly lost in the final round but managed to gain more fans."

Still too few Hyo-shim and Tae-ho scenes. I feel like Hyo-shim deserves someone much better, but I enjoy see Hyo-shim show a few smiles after when Tae-ho is involved because most of her expressions are tired/stress/sad. Uee and Ha Joon have such cute smiles too. Why isn't the show focusing on that?!

And holy moly - the writer this week was trying to make me feel bad for Hyo-jun and Hyo-do by giving them monologues of self-pity that do not take any responsibility for their actions. Eff your tears and the "woe is me!"

They've set the bar so low that when Hyo-jun said "I need to study and pay back Hyo-shim", I was impressed he knew he had to pay her back. Then I mentally slapped myself. The drama is setting the bar low for guys and is trying to convince us that beautiful, driven, successful women will accept it.

I really liked Mirim and was angry when they had her look at Hyo-jun with new found respect because he directed a few short films years ago. At least check to see if his work was any good. No, Mirim. Run away.

I like Tae Ho and Hyo Shim. They are cute together. Tae Ho still has some growing up to do and I think they can be good together.

More please, more! It's a very enjoyable drama if you just watch those and FF all the annoying bits. Isn't that how you are supposed to watch 50 episode weekend dramas? ;-)

3

I agree with you about the monologues of self-pity...good Lord...I guess it's fine to give some back story on why the boys are like that. But geez, grow up already.

Also the central problem here is the Hyo-shim's mom. So many issues would be resolved if she just stops all the passive aggressiveness, quit blaming things on her husband, appreciates her only daughter, and apologizes for using and abusing her so much! Enough with the self-victimization...please writer-nim...when will we see a major breakthrough??

I want to see Hyo Shim and Tae Ho smile more!

And Mi-rim...maybe the writers are thinking that they could work with each other..Mi Rim teaching Hyo Jun how to pass the bar, and Hyo Jun teaching Mi Rim how to be a good actress. But the thought of the possibility of Hyo Jun giving negative and hurtful comments to Mi Rim just makes me ughhh.

Also, I'm sorry but I'm FF-ing the parts with landlord lady...I still don't understand why they spend so much screen time on her...

Tae Ho was all cute to Hyo Shim. Hyo Shim is not immune to his charms but Soo Kyung and her co-trainers just has to mess with her mind.
The preview for next week get me all excited about them.
Hyo Jun should just stop forcing himself to pass the test. His heart is not into it if he dreams to be a director. Aspiring actress and Hyo Jun should just conquer the film industry together. Or aspiring actress can be his legal advisor if she fails to land a role.

For women, the sexist and at worst misogynistic accusations of being easy/gold diggers become even more horrifying in a professional context. I empathised with Hyoshim about why she became alert to this possibility. Taeho is clueless as to the realities of life for a woman in Hyoshim’s position.

9

That is true. Hyo Shim is horrified that people will perceive her that way. More so that she worked hard her to get to her position and likeable enough to gain a lot of clients. With a bottomless well like her ungrateful family, she needs to have a steady job to survive. Tae Ho does not grasp the situation and just thinks "I like her and will pursue her".

And Tae Min almost as clueless, although he realizes she won't be accepted by his family/society (but hopes he can somehow make it right) Nonetheless, at some point reality will hit him in the face as he realizes that his "love" for Hyo Shim will cause her more pain/hurt than she deserves.

I agree. His “love” for her is an idolised version as he is deeply unhappy about his thwarted life goals and wants to escape the nightmare but isn’t strong enough to reject the chaebol life. What is sad for him is that he doesn’t really know much about her life and doesn’t get that they are not suited. Sure, he is attracted to her and rightly admires her competence, unpretentiousness, honesty and kindness but his pursuit of her is making Hyoshim even more stressed and uncomfortable. She doesn’t appear to be flattered or tempted at all. Dude, try and read the room.

Meant “idealised”. Sorry!

0

Not sure I agree with the "thwarted" life goals. His passion was art and Uncle forced him to give it up. But he's also typical chaebol responsible for the health of his legacy (something frivolous Tae Ho doesn't are about) and the fact that "thousands" of employees depend upon Taesan for their livelihood.

I've said this many times - My impression is that he thinks he can separate business from personal. He's wrong - it's not possible in his position. Once he realizes they cannot be separable, my hope (come on writer-nim) is that he will be content with "balance". I look forward to the scene - whenever it might be - when he takes paintbrush in hand.

2

Nothing proves just how delusional Tae-min is regarding Hyo-shim than ignoring the fact that she would not be acceptable to his family. But then again neither was his mom: She is so 'unacceptable' that now her husband hates her. Which is why Tae-min's desire for hyo-shim is actually utterly irresponsible and even reprehensible because he has the example of his own parents to demonstrate what will eventually happen. Anchor Lady is what would actually be good for him, and she wants to have a real marriage with him which means that he is actually avoiding his one real chance for happiness in his family life when he avoids her.

Arranged marriages are actually just as likely to be happy ones as are those that come about through the agency of dating, etc. In Tae-mins case it is definitely would be a happier one.

Wow this week, episode 17 in particular, made me dislike every single character! Hoping this means the upcoming character arcs will be emotionally resonant as well bc right now I’m just grinding my teeth!

HS’s mom definitely took the cake, but the two younger brothers were in hot pursuit. The youngest in particular was so mean to Tae Hee and so entitled about selling the gift she gave him.

I was also annoyed with TM for not realizing that he was potentially endangering HS or least her employment by even indirectly exposing her to his mother. This is a lady who he knows locked up his own grandmother!

I even got annoyed with HS. Totally understand getting v drunk when you realize your mother had unrepentantly stolen your life savings, but it’s also dangerous and she didn’t seem to realize she was lucky to get home safely the first time. Which made me realize two things. 1) Is she unconsciously (literally!) looking for someone who will show up for her and take care of her like TH? 2) The reason I’m frustrated with her is I want her to show she’s learning from experience and thus give me hope that her LYOL moment is coming soon.

And my final thought. You can see how the older brother ended up married to who he did because marrying someone who would enforce boundaries for him was the only way he was going to have any separation from his family.

Whew! And of course I’ll be tuning in this weekend to see what happens next.

@kittystanden WOW - you and I are watching the same drama (for the most part). 😊

I thought Ep. 17 introduced some significant progress in the stories - especially with Hyo Jun hitting absolute rock bottom but also hinting - no, make that sirens blaring - that Hyo Jun may be the answer to Mi-ram's pitiful acting skills and she might be the one to help him pass the bar. They ywill strike a grand bargain and I'm here for it. They are one of my favorite story arcs.

I was also annoyed with TM for not realizing that he was potentially endangering HS or least her employment by even indirectly exposing her to his mother. Agree, but I think he realizes that there is some risk to Hyo Shim, which is why he is protecting her identify. Tae Ho is even more clueless - and part of the reason he is determined to pursue her is intentional - He's determined to hurt Tae Min and doesn't understand possible blowback against HS.

I HATE both mothers and they are both villains. Villainess # 1 is responsible for multiple misdeeds and might be culpable in the death of TH's parents. And Villainess #2 is a manipulative, selfish harridan who has ruined the life of every single one of her children. Hubby was a scumbag for leaving his children, but I don't blame him for leaving HER.

It's a Korean standard, but drunkenness "meet cute" is shallow and meaningless.

When Tae-ho was piggybacking HS, he even said that it's dangerous to drink to the point of passing out. He was like "don't you read the news?!" And she owes a crap-ton of money now. If I were her, I would be worried about being kidnapped and then trafficked and be vigilant all the time.

Great point about the older brother. Poor older brother then ends up marrying someone who doesn't set any boundaries for their daughter and is ending up like his mother. Their daughter is pretty much Hyo-jun 2.0 His wife will claim that she would be above bothering her kids like her mother-in-law, but when she's older, she'll reflect that she gave too much of herself to her kids and feel resentful and want to be compensated for her sacrifice.

Thanks @unit for the wrap-up and to DB for experimenting with this format for a weekender. My rambling thoughts:

1. I really like Ha Joon, but I'm not feelin' the cheesy jokester. He's going to hurt Hyo Shim before he helps. That's okay in a 50 episode drama, and I'm glad the actor is getting applause for his role, but Doormat Hyo Shim is . . .not relatable to me. Not sure if Korea viewers relate either - ratings are pretty dismal so far.
2. For the 1st time, I notice the books in Drunk Father's study - all with ENGLISH titles. And the various statuettes/busts (Plato? not sure) - this man was an intellectual that was beaten with a golf club by his own father and apparently "disliked" by his own "mother" (what kind of mother would allow this?)
3. The Wife From Hell (Hee Joo) actually serves one positive purpose - describing in detail how her mother-in-law is expletive trash, Queen Manipulator (while her own parents both had cancer and handled it on their own). Her husband shouldn't divorce his wife - he should divorce his mother!!! But apparently, Hyo Shim gets that privilege.
4. Tae Hee is growing on me. She improved from Negative 10 to Negative 8. Hyo Do - I don't even see the negative floor for him yet.
5. Hyo Jun and Mi-ran: I hope they strike a Grand Deal - she will help him pass the bar and he will help her develop as an actress. Mutual support as friends. Crossing fingers.
6. Finally - really, truly sorry to see writer-nim do what many feared w/r/t the character of Soo Kyung. Earlier episodes reflected some nuance and complexity - we don't know her "history" as a child. Jealousy is understandable - but cruelty and spite? Reprehensible.

Continues to be interesting but not addictive. Yet.

I agree that the one positive thing that the writer did in these episodes is to come up with a logical reason for Hyo-jun and Mi-rim to spend time with each other. It would be a stronger connection if Hyo-jun actually wanted to pass the Ba Exam but in those same episodes we also learned that he actually does not want to pass it. Had he actually wanted to pass he would have made it on the first try.

I too was disappointed in the direction taken for Soo-Kyung.

I've been thinking about Hyo-jun the real bottom line is that he doesn't want to be a lawyer. So failing the bar is his way of avoiding that future.

But he owes Hyo Shin millions of ₩ so based upon the preview, I think he's going to do the honorable thing and really try to pass this time. And I hope he does pass - and then chucks it for a director gig.

But he will still owe Hyo-shin the money even if he passes. So, he might have to go to work as a lawyer but perhaps as one who works as a desk lawyer for his friends- just as they suggested that he should. Clearly, he does not have the temperament to be a courtroom lawyer, but desk lawyers are extremely useful people and in particular that occupation is very suitable for someone who is a very good student.

From there maybe he can consider taking up some directing work again.

The writer has let me down and is apparently taking the lazy route by turning TV Lady into the B***h version of a 2FL. What a pity: There is so much more dramatic potential with other approaches, but I am sure that they are harder to write. What makes this approach not just lazy but crazy is, of course, that objectively speaking she and Hyo-shim are not in fact in competition for Tae-min except in Tae-min’s fevered imagination. It would have been smarter to have Ms. Choi befriend her and the two of them work at getting Tae-min to see reality.

Tae hui is opening a store- and youngest brother continued to be a brat. Could he be any stupider? Poor Tae-hui- she should be feeling like a prize idiot right now for ever getting involved with him. It is actually hard to believe that she is not feeling that way and I do not understand this one bit. The fact is that he is so self-absorbed that he cannot see anything but his own ego- I have actually grown very tired of his infantile tantrums and it is high time that Tae-hui did too.

Could middle brother be any worse? He has expressed, finally, some sense of obligation to his sister but he still is not taking responsibility for his own life. At least her oldest brother feels some shame and some sense of responsibility. These episodes did clarify what we all suspected: That the middle brother never had any desire to be a lawyer- that was simply his mother’s dream. He was actually upset that his chance to avoid that fate was taken away from him by his family raising the settlement money- going to jail was actually his way of escaping form that fate. Oddly enough he has the right of it: Unless you really want to do it being a lawyer is a life of utter misery. Most people should not even want to do it. Only those who want to do it and have the attitudes that support and fit that work should take that path. Middle brother would be so much happier if he had stood up to his mother before and told her he was going to go into a more suitable field. His family would be happier if he had only had the courage to do that. Apparently, he was briefly a movie director and is still remembered by his friends from those days. He should have stayed on that path.

I think we were fooled by the poster. This show is not about a happy living of your own life... it's (so far) a display of tragedy when people are NOT living their own lives, instead living lives forced on them by others or living in a dream/not reality (or both).

In the case of Tae-min it is really both, but his unreal attitude towards Hyo-shim is a response to what was forced upon him.

Synopsis says (I'm paraphrasing from memory) that Hyo Shim finally breaks free from her family and as a result, they (her family members) all struggle without her help but eventually learn to "live their own lives".

So, I'm fine with that w/r/t to the younger two sons, but the thought of listening to 15 minutes of mother's hysterics for 30+  more episodes is daunting.

Oldest son is a bit different because he doesn't rely upon HS - but his family does and they are headed for break-up - and eventual reconciliation.

I cannot stand it either. This is not good writing. You cannot blame the actress- she played a much more nuanced role in the classic Weekender FIVE ENOUGH.

1

@oldawyer I agree but it’s hard not to conflate the character and the actress. I will for sure watch five enough if only to cleanse my palate, so to speak

1

Upon reflection, I realized why I am so upset about the clear turn in direction for TV Lady - it likely means that Tae Min doesn't get a "romantic" happy ending, unless another woman shows up on the scene.

on the other hand, that big fat diamond ring seems likely to end up on someone's finger - unless that was also a silly plot device with the two boxes.

I did not like it for several reasons and I hope that it does not last long. After all she and Hyo-shim are not actually in competition. Also, because it is a waste of the talents of a good actress. Finally, because I too would like Tae-min to have a happy ending at least in the romantic sense and that would never have happened with Hyo-shim but definitely would with our TV Lady.

So, I hope that this is temporary. Hyo-shim may catch some grief from TV Lady but perhaps this will lead to a heart-to-heart talk between the two of them where Hyo-shim sets our TV Lady straight, leading TV lady to once again change her tactics. But above all, our TV Lady may finally realize that Tae-min needs to see that TV Lady will not only be his Tigress to help him deal with his family but would also be there for him emotionally. So far, she has not been willing to be that vulnerable and it may not even be possible for her character to do that. The truth is that so far we do not really know as much about her as we do Tae-min and Hyo-shim.

At the end of Episode 17 we finally learned just how much Mommy Dearest embezzled from Hyo-shim: Roughly eighty-five thousand dollars. I have a suggestion for Hyo-shim: It is time for a trip to the police station. Sending mom to prison for a few years would be a sure-fire way of getting her off Hyo-shim’s back. During that time Hyo-shim could set up a new life for herself that is separate from her family. As portrayed Mom is essentially a sociopath and there is no reforming her.

At this point, the only hope of massive family correction is having Missing Dad to literally smack common sense back into his wife and children. He ran way to build a nest egg and emotional strength to confront all of their parasitic faults. But the main focus of his return to give HS the money to open her own gym away from the family.

“ he blames Mi-rim for butting in when she should have allowed him to go to prison” in this one thing I’ve got to agree with him. He should’ve had to face the consequences of his own action.

What is to say he won’t assault someone again ?
The guy doesn’t seem to be repentant.
He takes an attitude about being bailed out .
Straight to jail is where this clown needed to go.

If anything, all the characters in this show repeat their actions over and over.
With a wave of a magic wand, he’s a director now and the actress swoons ? Aigoo

I think that his having been a director, etc. was planned as part of the show from the very beginning. His resentful attitude towards what he was doing now makes sense. It also explains why someone who apparently is extremely intelligent and was a top student would have failed four times.

His real failure was in not refusing to try it in the first place. He needed to have the courage to say no to his mom. In the end it was really cowardice that was his problem.

I also think his attitude have to do that he feel lost doing what his mother wanted him to do, while letting go of his passion in films. when they meet his old films buddy at the theater they seemed to like him witch make me think he probably was another person before he started studying laws and let himself go. I feel a theme in the drama about being lost and finding your place in life and yourself again.

He is actually a bit old to be taking the Bar Exam- most people would have graduated from Law School about 8 years before he did. So he must have tried film direction for several years before his mom caught him at a vulnerable moment and got him to agree to a different path just to satisfy her ego.

I have to say that the ‘short film director’ bit couldn’t have come across more absurdly. It was so bizarre and random. The plotting and pacing of this weekender is a dumpster fire.

Call it lazy writing, directing whatever giving free license to throw in a favorable impression that second brother has some talents (maybe). There is no character progression nor any indication that he is no better than a selfish loser who cannot pass an exam from the very first episode. Now after more than 10 episodes we suddenly learned something more about him. I simply hate if there are redemption arcs for the 2 younger brothers of Hyo-Sim without some form of penance after how they treated their sister.

4

@nomorelisa: Thanks for your great response. I totes agree.

3

I have to say that the ‘short film director’ bit couldn’t have come across more absurdly.

Aye, and that is the rub, so clunky , they just plop that down, here you are, he was a director !
No hints at all, were as with Mi-rim , we learned along the way that she had knowledge of the law.
They could have showed a photograph of him and the cast and crew from his film days on his desk.
A reminder of his true passion ! Right !?! His passion is film yet we had no idea.
He could have bumped into his film hyung much earlier in the show, again, fill the audience in please 😂

Aigoo, with two little scenes, Hyo-Joon is not such a jerk of a character.

4

@john: Exactly. Imagine how much less of a one-note jerk he could’ve been if this was introduced and logically developed. I think chat-pgt could’ve done a better job here.

4

I really dislike his character as he was always down in the dumps, never seen him smiling nor show kindness or remorse. Obviously he is a very unhappy man and how can the wannabe actor be attracted to him leaves me confounded as there never was any interest he had with her and all their interactions pretty confrontational. Is she a masochist?

It’s the writing and directing . Mi-rae and Hyo-Joon could have a much friendlier and organic relationship.
By placing the reunion of Hyo-Joon’s film hyung , (Mi-rae is still in the scene ) , much earlier in the Drama, both the audience and Mi-rae learn of Hyo-Joons passion for film.
Simple story telling 101 , writer-nim, PD-nim Instead of bickering, they could be sharing coffee and growing closer talking about their passion, right, because Mi-rae is no longer practicing law, (we assume), so those two collaborating in the direction of stage, film, acting or whatever would work.
Wouldn’t that be closer to the living your own life theme ?
The setup is the same ,two struggling artists find one another . Anyways, that’s how I would worked that out between those two.

Finally finished watching this week’s episodes.

I want to tie up HS’s mom and punch her for a couple hours, I have so much rage inside me right now.

I was disappointed with Tae Hui last week. I am disappointed with the terrible actress this week. Her way of consoling HS was “what can we do? We need to get Hyo Jun out”?!?! WTAF?

Ru Bi and her mom are beyond redemption, I just want them to go away.

Quick question. TM was sleeping nekkid when he was called to drop HS home. Did he dress up, make his bed, then go over? Cos his bed was all made up when he got back.

I simply loved the way TH ended up asking HS out. Almost petulant “I’d like to eat and drink with you. I have no one and am emotionally dependent on you also can I call you all the time” well played TH LMAO. I also loved how tender he was at the end. Really liking this couple. 🤗

The gym scene where TH was trying way too hard was cute and it was nice to see HS smiling. Not sure why SFL got jealous of that since she isn’t interested in TH right? But jealousy, it seems, is the route the writer has decided to take. Smh at the laziness

Something Hyo Jun said gave me pause. He said that she should’ve left him in jail so he had an excuse for dumping law. Now he will have to take the exam, fail, and humiliate himself.

I think that Hyo-jun's comments were just a clumsy way of communicating just how much he does not want to become a lawyer and also his fundamental cowardice: He would not be in this position at all but for his mom's manipulation of him and his unwillingness to stand up to her. The more that I see of her the more that I have actually started to have some sympathy for the missing father: Mom may cast what she is doing as all in reaction to his leaving but her character as a person was formed long before he left. What he did was still deeply wrong, but the reason now seems at least understandable.
