[2023 Year in Review] Beanie Awards

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. 2023 definitely brought a lot of surprises to dramaland. Some slogs, some gems. Some squee-worthy OTPs. Lots of regurgitated storylines. Gobs of reincarnation. Casts that were too good for their dramas. Scripts that were not good enough. Webtoon remakes that shouldn’t have been, and some that most definitely should have. It was quite the year.

Join us below as the Dramabeans community votes on the Best and Worst of 2023.

Polls will be open until December 31, 11:59PM.

I too just had to vote for Sung Hoon's wardrobe burn but yes agree that the makes even those super sopper pants look good ... just look at Seo In-guk drowning in his trousers at the Death's Game premiere event. Luckily Sung Hoon got better wardrobe in

that.

I agree. That question actually made me sad because I liked all three of the options and I feel like dramabeans and I are just on different pages. My favorite OTPs of the year weren't even options.

In the "I didn't mean to fall in love with you" category, I definitely would have voted for Lee Min-jae ( https://asianwiki.com/Lee_Min-Jae_(2000) ) 🥰

Also, what does it mean that I didn't actually want to vote for anyone in the "Best Hero" category? I think if I had to write someone in...it may have been Bong-seok (Moving) or even, frankly, Divorce Attorney Shin? In retrospect, I really quite liked his principled stance and his underhanded tactics and his apartment...that the drama wasn't satisfying somehow didn't detract from this, I think? I'm sort of as surprised as you might be that I'm typing this.

Also, the best OST was Unlock the Boss! I'll die on this hill ;)

Of the suggested heroes, I def. loved Shin-yu the best. But if I was in distress, he would not be the best hero. I voted for him. But ...
Of the shows I've seen, Ki-ho was the best hero. Especially impressive when he did everything he could to let her get away.

I'm really upset that Castaway Diva was not included in Best OTP or Best Kiss! I gave best kiss to my second choice, DWY. I'm glad it's at least winning best OST.

Also, "don't let the door hit you on the way out" was a difficult choice this year.

I admit it was difficult to choose in the worst parent category since there were a lot of bad parents this year.
But the rest were relatively easier.

16

Required fields are marked *

There should be male and female catagories for worst / best parent , I would also include best/ worst parents (couple)

11
4

That's a good idea. It would give chance to more bad parent/s the honor of being voted.

7

Required fields are marked *

I was not sure which to choose , Ki-Ho’s father or Hyo-shim’s mother. Stalker Dad had way too much on Castaway, imo. He’ll get plenty of votes.
Hyo-shim’s mom drags her show down and I did not want to let her escape unscathed.

4

Required fields are marked *

I chose Hyoshim's mother. To be sure she gets some votes. 😅

4

I was struggling to choose between the two. I eventually selected Stalker Dad since he was dangerous. But he also did do everyone a favor and killed himself.

3

There should be top 5 worst parents for voting.

I didn't vote for the best adaptation because I read none of these webtoon.

They didn't put A Good Day to be a Dog!

2
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

I think even outside of the source material, they had gorgeous direction and cinematography, good actors (even if ABH was miscast imo), etc. It had so much potential but was a total mess. So I voted it biggest mess.

For best webcomic adaptation I voted for PMR. It actually improved upon its source material, for the most part! I don't think I'll be voting for A Good Day to be a Dog next year in this category, sadly...

2
reply

Required fields are marked *

It won't officially end until next year, so it can't be in this year's categories.
Though it really ended with the saving kiss.

1

Required fields are marked *

I totally forgot the kissing scenes and had to look them up again. Even though I never finished King The Land, if I had to pick which show was going to be the best based on kissing scenes alone, it would have been King The Land.

I love the question about who had the worst wardrobe. So many nominees, yet only one who pioneered wearing three different down comforters on screen!

For a lot of the negative categories I had a terrible time choosing between Island, Kokdu & Heavenly Idol. Going back thru my WWW notes to remind myself of my reactions was also not the high point of my year.

Strong Girl was bad, but not bad enough to be a contender.

I froze with the first question. I literally watched only 1 drama in that category and it's the drama it's my least favorite drama of the year.

No idea how I got 30 beans this year, because these polls made me feel like I've watched nothing? 😂 At least I could vote for Yi-Cheong couple and Kopiko. LMAO

16

Required fields are marked *

In some categories there's like 1 drama I watched but I don't want to vote for them because I liked them (I'm kinda offended The Fabulous is in the same "mess" category with Kokdu and Heavenly, but OK). And a few were extremely easy, because I had only one option (like "secondary couple" or "hero").

But in most categories I literally didn't watch one single show, so I had to vote in my head.

5

I voted for Tiffany because it was the only one that was featured *in a sex scene.* (In Destined With You.)

6

@elinor Tiffany should use it as an ad 😁

1

@Elinor - precisely my reason too.

2

Same. My top three dramas that count for this year were Castaway Diva, Twinkling Watermelon, and Alchemy of Souls. I hardly think they were obscure dramas? Meanwhile I also watched nearly 30 dramas, and I'm like, what are these other ones that keep coming up in the polls? Plus the drama I found the MOST makjang and that made me want to set my hair on fire appears to be a favorite as it comes up in a great percentage of the polls.

Ah well. This is the thing about dramas--it's subjective! We all have our personal favorite things that tick all the boxes and ring all the bells, and sometimes that aligns with everyone else, and sometimes it doesn't. The good thing is that there were a lot of dramas and so hopefully everyone was able to find at least one this year that they could enjoy.

I think there could have been a LOT more contenders for “worst use of reincarnation”! And I don’t really consider the couples listed from Twinkling Watermelon and Secret Romantic Guesthouse side couples, so I didn’t vote for them even though they are both fantastic.

I love that Lee Min-jae is just up there as himself 😂 Although did anyone not mean to fall in love with him? Seemed pretty intentional on my part.

This voting is always so fun and I love all the different categories! And now I’m thinking I have more ideas for the fanwall year-end ones too…

I think there could have been a LOT more contenders for “worst use of reincarnation”!

100% - especially since I don't think what happens in A Time Called You is reincarnation at all. It's consciousness-shifting or time-shifting.

I might not have voted for Destined With You in that category, but I think it should be a nominee, along with Kokdu and HeartBeat. Beanies clearly had *opinions* about those and should have a chance to vote on them.

Based on the shows airing now, there's going to be heavy competition in this category for 2024.

3

Required fields are marked *

No, Moon in the Day option was enough, it was the worst of all of them. It accumulated : bad acting, no chemistry, wrong props, bad story.

At least, the others had something for them, for example, Heartbeat had a cute couple.

Oh boy, how hard is this?! I couldn't even vote for many cause I (a) haven't seen many of the shows and (b) couldn't choose for the ones I have seen.

For example: worst parent. The stepmother in Twinkling Watermelon is a special kind of evil for cutting off Cheong Ah's means of communicating with the world as well as locking her in the attic. Jung Bong Hwan was just terrible because of so many things (the abuse, the stalking, the causing the friend's accident, the possessiveness). The stepmother in Perfect Marriage Revenge tried killing the lead like 3 times as well as set up for jail time.

It's just really hard to choose who is the most despicable.

OK a few rants on the above choices/dramas.
It always surprises me how varied our tastes for dramas. It shouldn't as we all come from such different perspective and experiences in life. My from my own selfish perspective (not right, but just my own):

How Can People Not See How Bad These Dramas Were?
-The Heavenly Idol - such high hopes, but utter dreck!
- Island - so sure I would love this, but I kept checking myself that my senses weren't fooling me; relief that others thought it was just as bad as I did;
- Black Knight - should totally be my type of drama, but it was such a waste. The webcomic of which this drama is based on is so good, when the drama was so bad. Wasted opportunity when the roadmap was right in front of them!
- Strong Girl Nam-soon - I really enjoyed the first two or three episodes, then my hatred for this show burned brighter than the manuscript I wanted to chuck in the fireplace!
-"Most frivolous waste of talent...Everybody in The Uncanny Counter 2" I am at peace with the world again when I saw this. Everyone kept raving about UC2, but it was beyond meh....

How Can People Not See How Good These Dramas Were?

- See You in My 19th Life: I thought this was decently received and I enjoyed it even with a slightly weaker ending (but true to the webcomic) but this poll made me think I really missed something, but it was decent. Didn't not regret watching.
- Doona!: I totally get that the ending was bad. You would be even more infuriated to see that the webcomic laid out a perfect ending and they ignored it. It wasn't a romance happy ending, but it made sense and was fulfilling. But this show was not that bad or did I miss something completely??
- The Good Bad Mother - the Poll hates it, but wasn't it not that bad and people liked it? What changed?
- Bora! Deborah: I think I am not sophisticated to see why everyone hated this. It was not a classic or even rewatchable, but was it that terrible?
- Daily Dose of Sunshine: I wish more love was given to this show.

We are all different and alien to each other. All that combines us is our hate for Island, Strong Girl and The Heavenly Idol. Let us not lose that bond!

In fact, I picked Bora Deborah in the Roundup 2023 (in the Fan Wall) as "The drama beanies hated and you loved".
Well, it's far from my top, but I had a good time with that drama and I think the script, the OST and the actings were good (not always, because the ending was so-so).

I agree. I thought it was fun and some twists and turns and don't regret watching it. Do not need to watch it again, but the hate this got versus some other choices doesn't make sense to me. I know it got low ratings in Korea, but Strong Girl Nam Soon got good ratings so we know that system is deeply flawed. :-)

My dear Kim Nam Gil wasted his talent this year.
I didn't watch Island but it seems clear it wasn't a good show and KNG's talent was wasted.
But I finished Song of the bandits, another mess of a drama (for several reasons).

I hope 2024 is a better year for him.
