Welcome to the first-ever Beanie Royale! This year, we want to make voting more difficult exciting by having you pit each nominee against each other in a drama on drama match up, until only one show is left standing in each category.

Use the charts to deliberate over your choices, vote for your winning show in the polls, and let folks know in the comments how you arrived at the winner. Were some choices harder than others? Did your initial favorite end up being the one you chose in the end? (Feel free to campaign for your winning choices too!)

The polls will be open until Dec. 31st at 11:59 p.m. PST with the winners being announced after voting closes. There can only be one winner!

I hesitated for a second between the Fan and Magic Horse, but Magic Horse cannot be considered an accessory *snorts indignantly*. So I voted for the Fan. 😄

9

Thank you @wishfultoki Sunbaenim! Every vote counts!
(Even as I feel that My Country is the underdog) *sniff* It was fun though☺️ 🥳

5

@wishfultoki. Rabbits do think alike. I was thinking the same! But nothing can win over THE fan. 👍😉😁

4

@korfan,
I had to come back to vote for Bang-won's fan. Even though Magic Horse is too big to be an accessory like Paris Hilton's chihuahua (although he may be considered an accessory to crime by Ta-gon & the Arthdalians), he is one of my sentimental favorites, along with Eun-seom's carrots and Saya, former souvenir Neantal baby. ;-)

My hesitant to vote for Magic Horse is because it's mostly none existence. Although it is impactful enough just by the mere minutes it appeared on screen that I would vote for it on other occasion.

5

@pakalanapikake Another vote for the fan! Yay!

I have to agree that Magic Horse is a tad too big to be considered an accessory, plus that disappearing act towards the end didn't do him any favors, to be honest. But I know he'll be fondly remembered by many of us. As will Saya ...... *sigh**what could've been*

Since I can't vote for anything on this beanie royale because most dramas I watched are not even in it.....I created a new category: 'What made me want to throw stuff at the screen' award.

Options: Vagabond, Devil, Memories of The Alhambra, Trap
My pick: all of the above
Honorable mention: Melty, because even the article google trans nearly melted my brain (ref: http://www.dramabeans.com/members/katakwasabi/activity/927486/#)

Death that made me cry most - Dasom in He is Psychometric
Wasted death - secretary in MofA
Worst nonsense - HDL

Just checking, are you referring to "When the Devil Calls Your Name"? Because "The Devil" (Aka: The Lucifer) also has an amazing OST.

For me The Devil's OST is one of the best in all KDrama - not for its catchy songs but how it become part of the story telling. @linda-palapala gave some brilliant insights.

I wish all the match ups were even to avoid dramas and characters getting to automatically advance (i.e., Best Baddie). Haru! with his exclamation mark can't beat Baek Kyung Seol Ji-hwan for me. Gong Myung and Han Ji-eun not ending up together was a tragedy, even more tragic than him getting back together with his toxic girlfriend.

3

Required fields are marked *

The only bad part of Be Melodramatic was Gong Myung's ending. His girlfriend killed me every time she was on screen. I've never hated a character more. And yet, he STILL got back together with her with Ji-eun's encouragement. I was furious.

9

Required fields are marked *

I cursed every time the scene switched to Jae-hoon and Ha-yoon in their home. "BREAK UP WITH HER!! MOVE OUT!!" They were toxic for each other. In comparison, Jin-joo and Hwan-dong were also toxic for each other, so I never understood why he wanted to get back together with her, but at least all of their fighting was flashbacks. But with Jae-hoon and Ha-yoon, we were watching their toxic relationship play out in real time, which gave me an aneurysm.

In spite of that, I unexpectedly found myself defending Ha-yoon every time people blamed her for cheating. Yes, she cheated on him, but the truth was Jae-hoon was cheating on her emotionally. He undeniably liked Han-joo even though he had a girlfriend.

Han-joo's younger boyfriend was so out of the blue that her ending felt unsatisfying. The writer trolled us by showing a smiling Jae-hoon in his bed after Han-joo's confession.

Can there be a poll on the most ridiculous names of characters? I have this teeny weeny request to the writers regarding naming characters. As a non-Korean, but an avid Kdrama follower, i certainly and so easily get confused with the names; couldn't easily identify them by gender either. At some point, a writer names 3 totally unrelated characters as Ms. Park, Mr. Park or Mrs. Park..??? To top them all, a husband is named Sung Jun And the wife is called Jung Sun. Is there a rule regarding names of characters or are writers given limited choices?

4
20
reply

Required fields are marked *

It definitely took me a really long time to learn who was Sung-jun and who was Jung-sun in VIP. In Korea, there really isn't a variety of common last names. The large majority of the population has one of maybe 15? 20? last names, so Koreans probably get used to the confusion. A lot of international viewers turn away from K-dramas because they can't figure out the names, so I agree that it's an issue.

I laughed at the moment in Life where a character said she'd never met a Dr Ye before.

6

wasn't the otp in A Poem A Day called Dr Ye?

1

Song is also fairly common I believe. Add to the confusion is that some family/clan names are also Chinese family names- Song and Han were even the names of Imperial Chinese dynasties- not to mention that both Lee and Song are also English family names.

0

Either a man or a woman may be called Baek; a leading lady named Man. Also, even actors, actressess and idols have similar names: how many are Taecyeons, Ji Soos, Ji sungs, Parks, Seung Ki, Seung Gi? Seung Ri? Oh help pls...!

3
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

It can be confusing. Also, I'm not sure that they have traditionally male and female names? The only time I've heard something like that mentioned is in Because This is My First Life.

I like names though and some I love the way they sound.

1

That some names can be both male or female was even used as a standing joke in the family drama YOU'RE THE BEST LEE SOON SHIN, where IU's character was (apparently intentionally) named after the greatest admiral in Korean history: Yi Soon Shin. In the first episode there is even a brief scene where IU's character is standing in from of Admiral Yi's statue after being humiliated in a job interview and says "let's just keep this between the two of us, OK?".

3

I have been wondering about something for some time. Are Choi and Cha the same surnames just with different romanizations? Or not?

I presume Kwak is a rare surname?

3

Required fields are marked *

Choi (최) and Cha (차) are two different surnames with two different pronunciations.

7

Kwak seems pretty rare. I personally like Yook, since it's apparently stuck a small clan that all Yooks are vaguely related!

3

@mindy Thanks. It is the fault of a recent show with mediocre subs. It kept switching between the two surnames and made me second guess if they have always been the same. Thank you.

1

Some other uncommon surnames are Jung & Yang.
Kang, Seo etc. I know more variety of surnames due to kpop than kdramas though.

The kdrama world does seem small many times.

WWW may have been a fashion store, but best wardrobe was Pegasus Market by far. Oh so unexpected.

**Bok-Dong's flash dance white tights
**Mi-Ran's 40's inspired suits (a silhouette not often associated with SK women - but wow she rocked them)
**Kim Gab's fur collar hilarious and pointless. It was pure "emperors new clothes" in one item.
**Bbaya tribe's gourds re-imagined as head horns and probably no one else noticed - but their clothes that meant that at times they merged into the store's very walls.

Its biggest fashion statement was the store set. Brilliant in its olive green carpet and stained timber panelling. It said everything about this place forgotten in time and harking back to an innocence that never existed.

It is amazing how much this little show had hidden in it.

P.S.
Lee Da-Hee is becoming fashion to watch. However for me, her outfits in "The Beauty Inside" were in another league. The earrings in that drama are a tour de force in character design.

Also, I know but there isn't an award for set design so I am borrowing wardrobe.

The DB Beanies get to see the dramas in their own way...It's their site and have worked so hard this year and I am just an interloper.

All the best for 2020 and it just means you get to see things from a slightly different angle....I have learnt so much from so many beanies who have different takes. For me, they have shown me so much more of the SKDrama world.

The polls could have added way more options. Like for Best Chemistry, why are Moon Geun-young & Kim Sun-ho and Jang Hyuk & Yang Se-jong by themselves when there were thousands of ships this year? They even included secondary ships (Jung Yoo-jin & Wie Ha-joon, Lee Da-hee & Lee Jae-wook) and ships that did not sail (Gong Myung & Han Ji-eun).

So this.

Even in Be Melodramatic - Jin-Joo/Beom-Soo were totally in the shadow of Eun-Jung/Hong-Dae.

And since its "Best chemistry" not OTP - there was something tense and special about Dong-Baek and Hyang-Mi. Theirs was such a painful friendship...then once the true history was revealed - wow just wow.

1

Reading 'ships that did not sail'....I remember my Rock Candy ship aka Ki Tae Woong x Go Hae Ri from Vagabond. But I have no one else to blame other than myself for building a ship that was bound to sink like Titanic 😭.

2

@katakwasabi My ship that did not sail was my Sunflower ship Kang Sung-mo and Eun Ji-soo from That Psychometric Guy, so at least both halves of your ship made it out of the drama alive. 😭

I watched almost of the dramas listed in the poll, but still, for almost all of the categories, I would have chosen something different than the options listed. Oh well.

Required fields are marked *

If I may join in on this conversation, exactly how are the drama specials? I mean what's so interesting or different about them. I haven't watched any.

0

Basically @amy1009, the appeal is that drama specials can be anything. New writers can show off unique stories that wouldn't necessarily have been approved of as a full length drama. Directors get to be as artsy or off the wall as they want. It's just a breath of fresh air.

2

I've only watched a couple of them, I liked Notebook of my most embarrassing days & if we were a season.
I'm open to any genre or story, I've been looking to expand my drama horizons.

1

Hmm, okay @maybemaknae, if you want another romance then I like Buzzcut Love or Bride in Sneakers. For a thriller, I recommend Forgotten Season every time because I'm still chilled to the core by it. If you want great characters with unique bonds, maybe Madame Jeong's One Last Week or Red Teacher. Aaaaand I'll just throw I Introduce My Father and Summer's Dream in because I like them 😂

1

Agree. I screamed in frustration when they didn’t end up together but then again, maybe it’s the way the show wanted to tell that platonic kind of love is also possible, especially between coworkers. Jae hoon and Hae Yoon are better off without each other though..

2
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, I didn't mind his reconciliation with Ha-yoon too much because you can tell they've grown as people and learned from their mistakes. But still, they just don't seem right for each other anymore. It's lovely that there's at least one platonic boy-girl best friend situation in dramaland, but I saw Jae-hoon and Han-joo working great as a couple.

My honourable mentions are

1. The Last Empress - I walked around with a hole in my heart for a week after the show ended. I felt numb. I haven't felt this way about any drama before. Hyuk stole my heart. Hyuk broke my heart.

Best Hero/Villain: Hyuk

2. Memories of the Alhambra
Hyun Bin was so charming and so gorgeous he took my breath away every scene he was in. And I loved the chemistry he had with Park Shin hye. They were such a goodlooking couple, and I loved the contrast between his cynicism and hardness and her sweetness and fragility. This couple made my heart skip a beat every time they were together.

Best Smile, Most Goodlooking Character - Hyun Bin
Favourite Couple - Hyun Bin and Park Shin hye.

3. The Light in Your Eyes - Most Heartbreaking Drama. Cried from start to finish.

4. VIP - Rawest Drama of the Year. It made me so angry, and I felt so much pain that at times it was unbearable to watch. Every episode left me drained, and tight. But, ultimately, it was a tribute to the resilience and dignity of the betrayed wife, and Jang Nara delivered, and I ran the entire gamut of emotions with her. Such nuanced acting, a look, a tightening of the lips, a flash of pain, hidden the next - Jang Nara did it all, and I feel so proud of her character.

Best Lead Actress - Jang Nara
Most Painful Drama - VIP
Best Ending - VIP

Surprisingly not hard because I wasn't that enamoured with this years crop. I have a feeling if I had finished Graceful Family it'd get the bean, but as it is among the choices given (Between RIABB & M@18) I'd choose RIABB. However my one kdrama bean would go to Rookie Historian Goo Hye Ryung, which wasn't nominated. Why? 👀

Best scene stealer :-
Omg how? Haru vs Seol Ji Hwan (Sorry, Rowoon, Ilu 🤟🏻 fantasy forever, but Seol Ji Hwan wins....) But how can I choose between Kang Sung Mo & Cha Hyun? Well Cha Hyun will have other fans I'm sure..

Btw where do I vote? The polls aren't available for all the categories *scratches head* [Edit now they are!]

Best chaos -
I loved Kill It's nonsense & Graceful Family's makjang & Trashdals hot trash but What's wrong with my mother in law wins hands down. I'd pay to watch it, ngl.
[WTH why did you name the poll question differently? I voted for Trashdal because it said strangely glued instead of chaos. Ugh]

Best Chemistry -
Scarlett & Seol Ji Hwan. Burn baby burn. Oh the lovely cinders, they still sizzle. What a couple. What a girl. What a guy. [Sorry Jang Hyuk & Yang Se Jong. I love you guys, I solemnly swear I refrained from being dazzled by abs & muscles 💪.... Please star together again... But I guess I'm too straight for this. Sorry. I wish I could. But hey you're my No 2!]

That was fun! Can't wait for the results!

Also, didn't vote for the Best Doctor Drama, I did watch Doctor John but I wouldn't say it was the best without checking the other two

I hesitated over the 'one last bean' category. "Light in your eyes" is objectively the best series but viewers didn't realize HOW great it was until the big episode 10 reveal. 'Be Melodramatic', in contrast, was objectively great all the way through though the stakes were much lower. In the end I picked 'Be Melodramatic'.

Everyone raves about this show so i'm kinda on a mission to finish it before the year ends..but i keep getting distracted with other stuff and can't move past ep 5 (5 fine eps but obviously not so wow i gotta finish it all now!) So with your view, i'm tempted to skip to 10 directly.

We're supposed to follow the match-ups given right? then there's shows that i didn't watch pitted against what i did..and shows i watched but not in the match-up..
I appreciate the effort DB but i'll just vote directly yeah..

i wanted to vote Hoo Ja as best baddie but i guess she isn't as bad as the other contenders. the fact that What's Wrong With My Mother In Law made it as a nominee - kudos to WWW 😂

I played along the Beanie Royale, but honestly, your favoritest will win out every time. Like for One Last Bean, my favorite drama of the year was Be Melodramatic, so no matter which drama was pitted against it in the first, second, or third match-ups, I would always chose Be Melodramatic.

What Dramabeans should have done is award one vote per bracket, so your winner in each category can win up to four votes.

What's Wrong With My Mother-In-Law is the most makjangtastic of all makjangs. I was hoping we could get a "best makjang" category this year but it really suits the "best chaos" category.

The wardrobe I really want to steal was Dong-baek's, from When the Camellia Blooms...but it's not on the list. Excepting the Rosemary's Baby dress, I adored her warm autumn colors and casual yet dressy look. Where can I get my hands on the clothes from that show? Of course, Gong Hyo-jin is 5 inches taller than me so her clothes probably wouldn't fit.

I wished Reach for Sincerity was up for more categories. This may be my puny bean count talking but I really did love the OTP, LDW was a great protagonist, and it would be a fun office to join!

So there’s a difference between best objective show but also best show that kept you hooked. And the hooked one is overcoming my objective side (extraordinary you)

As I was going through the list this year I learned that....2019 was the year other countries stepped up their game because some of my truly favorite series this year were not kdramas.

C drama, The Untamed. Damn if that was just not perfect.
Put Your Head On My Shoulder was just fantastic fluff.
Mr Fighting was really good as well ( although I am still salty about that ending. Still. Salty).

Jdrama- If Talking Paid.
Nippon Noir was so bad it was good.

Thai drama. Until We Meet Again so far is done really well.

Why wasn't Veronica Park a choice for scene stealer? She would have won hands down.

I realise the title makes it sound so, but Doctor Detective is not a doctoring drama. I know because I watched about six episodes, really hoping it would be good. I can't tell if it's there as a joke, or if the mysterious Dramabeans overlords just didn't research it and guessed 😂

I watched all 32 episodes and yes, they were doctors. And yes, they were not the greatest detectives.

There were not working in hospital. But they were doctors and they had to find out what was causing the symptoms of the workers who came to see them. They defined the symptoms and then went to the workplace to find the source.

That was kind of my point. I wouldn't call it a medical drama but any sense of the word.

I've been watching dramas for almost 10 years now and this year I've probably watched the least amount! This page made me realise how many dramas I need to catch up on Lol thank you dramabeans for giving me about 8 dramas to watch.

Wow, this was surprising in some ways. I had to skip two categories simply because I didn't see enough shows to make my voting appropriate. Other than that, I think this helped me answer a question - what was my favorite drama of the year? The answer is Graceful Family. I mean, it was difficult, especially for the "last bean" vote because I also loved Be Melodramatic so, so much... but at the end of the day, Graceful Family was a true gem from a little known network like MBN that was completely unrepenant about its insane levels of melodrama. I loved the badass lead and her beta male, I loved the family's ridiculous infighting and brilliant moments of comedy (the fish funeral!), I loved the villains, and I loved how emotional I was about the tragedy too even when I saw it coming. Thanks for this fun way to help me really set this drama apart from the others I watched this year.

Sageuks were sadly under-represented in Beanie Royale, especially in the Best Wardrobe category. CROWNED CLOWN, MY COUNTRY, and FLOWER CREW: JOSEON MARRIAGE AGENCY had gorgeous costumes. Sun-ho's gat-free late-Goryeo fashions were particularly fetching, while Bang-won and Bang-gan sported understated but opulent fabrics in their civvies. Even Bang-won's soldiers were well-dressed, and his lieutenants even more so. Madame Seo and her staff at Ihwaru were sumptuously attired. Lee Chang Seja and his faithful guard Moo-young looked quite spiffy until they were covered in zombie gore in KINGDOM; the royal guards were dressed to kill, while everyone else wore the ragamuffin look. Two of the three yentas in FLOWER CREW were fashion plates themselves who dolled up their clients with fetching makeovers.

In the present day, DESIGNATED SURVIVOR's civil servants and baddies were all kinds of fine in their suits and uniforms, in particular the special ops team. PEGASUS MARKET was awash in spiffy business duds and traditional Bbaya garb topped off with signature horns. President Jung took the cake with his surreally-memorable outfits: That sunflower petal halo! Those white tights! His mask and cape! Don't forget the royal robes and winged cap of Customer Satisfaction's Oh In-bae and the employees' red and gold dragon uniforms raiment. And Kim Gab's signature fluffy fur neck piece. ;-)

Some sageuks, especially the ones set in pre-Joseon eras, tend to feature gorgeous clothes which look more like stage costumes. I was really impressed with the costumes in My Country. They looked like real clothes.

In the Best Accessory category, 3 in WHEN THE CAMELLIA BLOOMS: Dong-baek's germanium bracelet, Peanut Moocher's freebie peanuts, and Yong-shik's beloved mandoo. 5 if you count Ongsan's marinated crabs and Pil-gu's baseball bat. ;-)

With wall-to-wall villains in NOKDU FLOWER, it's hard to pick the biggest. I won't even get into the high-ranking Joseon traitors and Japanese aggressors. Master Baek Man-deuk and Lord Hwang Seok-joo were the hometown baddies whose actions and attitudes created monsters who caused immense suffering far beyond Gobu. Speaking of whom, Best Busted Bromance goes to estranged brothers Geoshige Baek Yi-kang and Oni Baek Yi-hyun.

Shout out to Choi Moo-sung for his memorable portrayal of a true blue hero, Mung Bean General Jeon Bong-joon. He was great in MR. SUNSHINE, and even better in this role.
