News bites: December 12, 2023

Ji Sung, Jeon Mi-do

  • SBS confirmed casting for a police officer Ji Sung (Adamas) and journalist Jeon Mi-do (Thirty-Nine), (re)forming a Connection through the death of a high school friend – involving drugs – and the ensuing insurance payout. With PD Kim Moon-kyo (Trolley) at the helm and scripts by Lee Hyun (Diary of a Prosecutor), the crime-thriller is expected to broadcast in 2024. [News]

  • Netflix announced that the suspense series The 8 Show (previously Money Game) is also preparing for a 2024 release, with filmmaker Han Jae-rim (Emergency Declaration, The King) both writing and directing in his first drama venture. Lining up an ensemble cast, the webtoon adaptation stars Ryu Joon-yeol (Human Disqualification), Chun Woo-hee (Delightfully Deceitful), Park Jung-min (Hellbound), and Lee Yeol-eum (Nevertheless), in addition to Park Hae-joon (I Haven’t Done My Best Yet), Lee Joo-young (Bargain), Moon Jung-hee (Times), and Bae Sung-woo (Live). [JTBC]

  • The promos continue for MBC’s Knight Flower, giving us our first glimpse of Kim Sang-joong (The Banker) and Lee Ki-woo (Miraculous Brothers) in a generous batch of new stills. Along with Honey Lee (One the Woman) and Lee Jong-won (The Golden Spoon), the comedy-sageuk will be launching in the new year on January 12. [MBC (1), (2), (3)]
  • In the meantime, a new teaser has dropped for TV Chosun’s My Happy Ending, showcasing our heroine Jang Nara (Family: The Unbreakable Bond) as she discovers the real truth about her family and friends. The psychological thriller is also headlined by Sohn Ho-joon (The First Responders 2) and will be premiering on December 30. [MBC]

  • Channel A released a new poster for the upcoming Man and Woman, collaging the memories of our main friend group and the seven-year long romance between Donghae (Oh! Young-shim) and Lee Seol (D.P. 2). Airing weekly in a Tuesday slot, the webtoon adaptation begins later this month on December 26. [Sports Donga]
  • Cute posters have also come out for ENA’s Like Flowers in Sand, starring Jang Dong-yoon (Daily Dose of Sunshine) and Lee Joo-myung (Twenty Five Twenty One) in a sweet coming-of-age romance. Following Moon in the Day in the Wednesday-Thursday slot, the sports drama will be sprinting to our screens on December 20. [Sports Donga]

I read about the plot for 1 and it wasn't an easy one at all. The male lead role is especially challenging. The female lead's no less. I'm sure Ji Sung and Jeon Mi-do are up to the task.

2. I've not seen Moon Jung-hee since Times. It's really nice to see her grace the small screens again.

3. I see all four of them. It was hard fishing out Lee Jong-won's face.

4. My Happy Ending chebal, don't be what I'm fearing it is.

If there’s an actor I’d trust in a challenging role, it’s Ji Sung.

Right about that. I'ld give you 10 beans for your comment, but its not a drama so---sorry!

They might want to consider changing the English name of My Happy Ending 😏

I’m most looking forward to Like Flowers in the Sand but I may have jinxed it.
Everything I looked forward to most have been lackluster this past year.

Seriously! The shows I was most excited for in 2023 nearly all disappointed me and I ended up loving shows I hadn't even planned to watch.

Tell me about it! I’m getting scared of even starting anything new because it feels like the new default is being disappointed.

Is Jeon Mi Do trying to tick off my bias list? Get in touch for the rest of the list, honey.

First, anything with Ji Sung in it and I'm 'sat'. He keeps giving us such diverse characters in his series choices and the comedy "Kill Me Heal Me" telescoped so many of them into just one drama. It's been out 8 years and it's still in my top ten, pulling in a solid 9.6* rating on Viki. Same with 'Secret Love' from 2013. A Viki rating of 9.5* What a twisty tale, almost a thriller for me. His metamorphosis from ugly revenge to love was hard to watch but brought a great pay-off. So if PD Kim Moon-kyo (Trolley) has the reins on this one, we might expect some dark twists as well. Won't miss it.

I think I’m looking forward to Flower that Blooms at Night (much better name) the most from this list, although I’m also eager to hear more about Connection. Love a well acted crime thriller.

US viewer’s availability update:
4. TV Chosun’s MY HAPPY ENDING will be available on Viki.
5. Channel A’s MAN AND WOMAN will be available on Viki under the title: BETWEEN HIM AND HER.
6. ENA’s LIKE FLOWERS IN SAND (12 eps) W/Th will be available on Netflix. (Those pics of Jang Dong-yoon give me vibes of his Min-ho in A POEM A DAY (2018). Alternate title: THE FURTHER ADVENTURES OF MIN-HO.)
Mini availability rant. MBC being a component of the big three should already have No. 3 FLOWER THAT BLOOMS AT NIGHT on Kocowa’s “Coming Soon” list. Not there yet.

Mini follow-up rant... I've noticed a pattern with Viki. The later they post a drama to Coming Soon, the longer it takes them to find a subbing team, and then the episodes end up posting so late that it's effectively a day behind. The bidding war for dramas seems to be getting more intense, especially with power players amazon prime and Disney+ now more aggressively acquiring streaming rights. This has to be affecting Viki who's no longer the "heir apparent" for certain channels.

I didn’t mention Viki because my observation in regards to the big three networks (KBS, SBS, MBC) is that if one if their dramas is to be licensed to Viki it first appears on Kocowa’s “Coming Soon” list. I am assuming that KBS’s 32 episode KOREA-KHITAN WAR (which is being carried by Viki) is not being subtitled by a Viki team because at the end of episode 10 it says “Subtitles provided by Kocowa”. I am glad Viki is picking up dramas from some of the smaller outfits.

Hum... not so excited by these news.

1) I like the pairing.
2) I like the casting.
3) It can be fun but The Matchmakers set the bar high.
4) Not interested.
5) What a bad haircut for Donghae. I like the actress but after Yong-Shin's disaster, I'm not tented.
6) Is it a drama about wrestling or running? It's not clear...

1. This sounds good and I really like the pairing too, but given the track record of the past two years I’m worried about being excited for anything.

2. Honestly I’m just here for Ryu Jun-yeol on the small screen again. And as a sidenote, I don’t even need to check online to know that Seventeen fans are probably making fun of the title lol.

3. Lee Won-jung looks good in that hat.

4. “discovers the real truth..” that she should never get married?

5. Actually starting to really look forward to it. Rare case of the promos being effective for drumming up my interest.

6. Kind of mad to realize that Lee Joo-myung hasn’t been in anything since Twenty Five Twenty One.

Theatre actors are something else. Multitalented threats on the stage, all while stealing the show from veterans of the screen when they do show up for tv or movies. You can always tell when an actor is trained on stage.

- Jeon Mi-do ❤️
-"THE 8 SHOW" has a lot of my favorite actors. Netflix is probably hoping for another hit drama from Chungmuro. Can Chun Woo-hee play a character that isn't weird or complicated for a change? Park Jung-min, I lup joo.
-I will never forgive the writer if they waste these great veterans in "Flower That Blooms at Night." Fingers and toes crossed.

I have to admit that I wasn't that interested in FLOWERS IN THE SAND but now that I've seen the poster? Maybe... maybe...

I will say this - I usually like seeing K-Drama Oppas with longer haircuts but Jang Dong-Yoon is one of the few who look really good with shorter hair.

And I am looking forward to KNIGHT FLOWER.

Hopefully both will be available on one of the streaming services I have.
