Drama viewership ratings for the week of January 15-21, 2024

Marry My Husband continues on its climb, while Love Song for Illusion does the opposite. Between Him and Her is also struggling in its Tuesday slot and will be moving to a weekly Friday slot instead. In contrast, Like Flowers in Sand hits a personal best this week, and will likely keep those numbers heading into its finale.

In the weekend slots, we say goodbye to Welcome to Samdal-ri (finishing at a high note of 12.4%) and My Demon, which did better than last week but never regained its early traction.

As for Knight Flower, it effortlessly crosses into double digits, My Happy Ending hits 3%, and Captivating the King makes a decent start but then loses viewers in its second episode in the back-to-back premiere.

It’s a shame Tell me that you love me didn’t hit 2.0 for the final episodes.
Well done to Welcome to Samdalri getting 12.4 for the finale.

I just can't wrap my head around the ratings for Tell Me. I guess people just don't like melodramas? Well, this one is a gem for me. It's a shame it doesn't get the attention it deserves.

Hello, do you recommend "Tell Me that You Love Me" and "Welcome to Samdalri"? Thank you so much for your time. I really like "The Bequeathed", the story makes me realize that all people have their own stories including the hurtful ones.

My taste is very different to most beanies as I like low key realistic drama. I can handle the shouting and distress in Dear my friends but can’t stand the gangster violence of If you wish upon me. I like the warmth and fun of fantasy dramas like Twinkling Watermelon.

So bearing the above in mind this is my view. I would say Tell me that you love is an exceptional story told very well. I felt the second female lead’s story took up too much air time however because this was a realistic portrayal of adult relationships it wasn’t the usual petty entitlement storyline.

Welcome to Samdalri is light and fluffy fun with a small town vibe. It is only spoiled by too many excessive drinking scenes, an old school type villain and a ridiculous second male lead. It was an enjoyable watch for me who doesn’t like stalkers mixed in with romance.

Thank you so much for your response. I do not like to watch drama that has too many excessive drinking scenes. I may skip "Welcome to Samdalri" and will try watching "Tell Me that You Love Me". I do dislike gangster violence and revenge story. I prefer heartwarming story and forgiveness. Thank you again.

No problem at all always happy to help and if you do a general request the Beanies are always happy to share recommendations or give a heads up when to run. We are mostly respectful of the range of opinions and preferences although some beanies will comment on actors skills and the find fault with writers but this helps to know which beanies you connect with/value their views.

I think I like similar shows like you do, so do you recommend Twinkling Watermelon, Mom Bean?🫘

I definitely recommend it. I gave it most of my beans in the bean count last year. The time travel element has some major loop holes but the general story is so sweet. It is funny and has found family and young love. The sweetest confession, lovely family dynamics.

As long as you don't go about looking for logic ... twinkle ahead my friend!!

Leave every last bit of your brain at the door, instead take in as many hearts as you can with you, and you're all set. 😁
Amazing acting, amazing heart-exploding scenes, absolutely nonsensical logic.

Did something happen in Ep.3 to lose viewers, or is there just too much competition on Saturday for Knight Flower to fall back down to 8%?

Yes, the AFC games are a big deal in most Asian countries. Korea had a tough match against Jordan on Saturday, resulting in a draw. They'll go against Malaysia this Thursday, so the weekend shows are safe. LOL

Aside from “Welcome to Samdalri,” viewership ratings for most dramas fell across the board due to competition from coverage of the AFC Asian Cup.

SBS’s “My Demon” ended on an average nationwide rating of 3.5 percent for its series finale, marking a slight dip from the previous night.

MBC’s “Knight Flower,” which airs in the same time slot, scored a nationwide average of 7.9 percent for its fourth episode. Despite dropping out of the double digits, the new drama was still the most-watched MBC program to air on all of Saturday.

In spite of the stiff competition from AFC Asian Cup coverage, KBS 2TV’s “Korea-Khitan War” remained first place in its time slot with an average nationwide rating of 9.5 percent.

Meanwhile, TV Chosun’s new drama “My Happy Ending” maintained its personal best of 2.6 percent from its previous episode.

Finally, KBS 2TV’s “Live Your Own Life” continued its reign as the most-watched program of Saturday with an average nationwide rating of 17.6 percent.

There is a football match (Korea versus Jordan) on Saturday (20th January 2024).

I'm sad that ENA's shows are ending. They were the best written. What could I watch on Mon-Tue? Neither of the airing shows are specially good...

My Demon ended with a little score, it's pretty rare for a final episode.

Oh! I didn’t know that. No more shows from ENA? I have always found little gems there.

Weekends are awfully crowded and Mon-Wed have been bare. I miss the days when I would have dramas spread across the week.

I enjoy watching and participating in sports, but I struggle with sports dramas for some reason. I guess it has to be real for me to get into it.
I'm proud of Jang Dong-yoon for taking on different roles. I'll be cheering on the sideline for a rating increase.

I am also super impressed by hos range of acting- I didn't realize he's the same actor as the lead in the Tale of Nokdu until a beanie posted a fabulous gif of him fan dancing on the wall. Kudos to him, he went super hard-core into the wrestler role (weight gain in specifically a wrestler looking physique).

I have ranted in the past about some of the crap Jang Dong-yoon has had to contend with during his acting career so (as a fan since his appearance in JTBC’s SOLOMON’S PERJURY (2016/2017) (5 stars)) I am delighted for his success in 2023 going into 2024. His KBS drama OASIS was one of my 2023 favorites but going into the final 2 episodes I think little ENA’s LIKE FLOWERS IN SAND is his best performance. Fantastic.

Oasis should have been so much better, the stupid Love Triangle doomed that show to mediocre . JDY did fine, despite the writer and producer.

In one sense JDY was more ‘physical’ in OASIS than in SAND. (Then again he was 30 pounds lighter lol). Think of the choreography and rehearsal for those fight scenes. In OASIS I loved those fight scenes and the interaction with his gang of guys and the elders pulling off the cons. He is great with ensemble casts. We are seeing it in SAND.
I have to hand it to JDY. In SAND he is carrying an extra 30 pounds and not only that he can sprint with that weight. How he got those pounds into the right places I will never know because if it was me they would be all in my gut. The ssireum matches have been thrilling. As a pure sports kdrama I think SAND has been the best I have watched.
Finally, let me put a little plug in for Lee Jae-joon who played Jin-su. He played JDY childhood (frenemy?). I am sure he put on an equal amount of weight for this part but he has been in the background.

5

I enjoyed JDY in Oasis, too. I even liked his dark makeup. I think he had the opportunity to use a wider range of emtions in Oasis, but his character in LFIS is so endearing.

Regarding Oasis, a few months later I watched "Sandglass" and noticed similarities in the drama. Have you checked this 1995 CLASSIC out yet?

About JDY, his interviews are so refreshing because he seems like a REAL person--which he was before he foiled that robbery! Anyway, his path to stardom has not been paved by connections, but by talent. He wasn't raised in the idol training centers and he didn't have a theater major.

No I have not seen SBS’s SANDGLASS (1995) and unfortunately (after a search) it does not seem to be available on a legal stream for US viewers. 24 episodes with a nationwide average rating of 50.8%. Wow!

JDY was a real sport in OASIS early on with the makeup he had to wear but his hairdos were something else. Eventually they gave him a nice haircut but before that, oh my lol.

1

I like it when the ratings make sense to me.

I'm loving "Flowers," "Knightflower," and "MMH" so happy to see that they're doing well.

I tried about 30 minutes of "Captivating the King" but got bored, so it's not surprising to me that it lost numbers from the first to the second hour. It doesn't help that they're covering the same time period "My Dearest" so memorably did.

I couldn't get through "My Demon" ep 15 yet and I'm not sure I'll finish. That drama just ran out of story.

I remember him from the movie, but he's been low-key in dramas, maybe because I didn't watch enough of his dramas. Seeing him in "Flowers That Blooms At Night" is like seeing a familiar but unfamiliar face.

Boys Over Flowers
Flower Boy Next Door

I also first saw LKW in FBRS. He then went on to steadily choose characters that I hate. 🙄
Interestingly, I seem to like the characters he chooses in movies.

Boys over flowers unfortunately proves to me I won't automatically like all names with flower in the title, but again, a super popular drama!

3

@cozybooks,
I didn't mention it on purpose. Haha

4

@kiara lololol is that so? Haha I think it's funny how it was such a MASSIVE hit at the time and now I think there's a lot of people who aren't really fans. I never could get through it. I tried twice back in like 2014 and again in 2016 or 2017.

4

@cozybooks,
Massive, yes, the 2nd generation Hallyu, and it was a gateway drama for many overseas fans.

The vibe... serious, epic and tragic. It's about battles and war and the story of two brothers trapped in all that chaos. It's a pure sageuk, not fussion.
There are good characters, acting, cinematography and OST.

6

Well acted. Sad though. Brother vs brother . The people revolt. The modern world comes crashing in to Korea , like it or not. The beginning of the end of the old Joseon .

8

Oh, interesting! I'll have to put it on my list - I don't know that I've ever watched a serious Sageuk before and absolutely loved it, although I've been around on DB when a few were airing (Six Flying Dragons)

5

There was The Flower in Prison too.

I believe that sporting events may have affected ratings for Saturday. That is why both episodes of CAPTIVATING THE KING were moved to Sunday and would explain some of the depressed numbers for Saturday.

LIVE YOUR OWN LIFE cleared 21% on Sunday. This is approaching normal Weekender numbers which makes sense now that the plots are actually moving along.

JTBC continues to maintain its magic in ratings from 2023 into 2024. 👏Not that any of it was a favorite, but it's good to see viewers tuning in.
I think Tvn is getting desperate enough to steal Kim Taeri's new drama (Jeong Nyeon) from MBC. Way to go, CJ ENM; 😆😅 Surprise? NOT.

Isn’t it? For now, it’s a little gem among a limited number of viewers, seemingly among international audience (perhaps the highest-rated Kdrama on IMBD right now), and international reviews are mostly very good. Let’s see how it fares after all have access to it.

Now unknown I can’t believe K ratings cos I always end up loving something they don’t quite like (to put it mildly) lol. And I’ll dislike something that hype (also to put it mildly).

Like Flowers in Sand is a gem and deserves all the love, as well as more viewers.

And I know this is nitpicky as heck, but a show can't achieve a 'personal best' in ratings because it isn't a person. I see this locution all the time on Soompi and MND and it kind of drives me crazy.

/nerd. Carry on.
