News bites: April 8, 2024

Clockwise: Choi Siwon, Jung In-sun, Jung Yoo-jin, Lee Tae-hwan

  • TV Chosun’s DNA Lover has confirmed their main lineup with doctor Choi Siwon (Death’s Game), researcher Jung In-sun (Let Me Be Your Knight), firefighter Lee Tae-hwan (Thirty-Nine), and columnist Jung Yoo-jin (Celebrity) headlining the rom-com. Directed by PD Sung Chi-wook (Tomorrow, Mouse) with scripts penned by Jung Su-mi (Born Again), the series is slated to broadcast in the weekend slot this June. [News1]

  • But we don’t need to think too much about summer yet as our crop of spring dramas are just starting to blossom, including MBC’s upcoming Chief Detective 1958. In another bouquet of freshly cut stills, we get a whiff of detectives, Lee Je-hoon (Taxi Driver 2), Lee Dong-hwi (Big Bet), Choi Woo-sung (Melancholia) and Yoon Hyun-soo (A Good Day to Be a Dog), who’ll be saluting us into the period-action on April 19 next week. [MBC (1), (2)]

  • No matter the weather, though, the dramagods seem determined to keep Kwon Yul (Longing for You) in a dapper suit, playing prosecutor for the nth time in SBS’s Connection. He, as well as Jung Yoo-min (Perfect Marriage Revenge), confirmed casting for the crime-suspense, acting alongside Ji Sung (Adamas) and Jeon Mi-do (Thirty-Nine). Set to premiere later this year, PD Kim Moon-kyo (Trolley) is at the helm with writing by Lee Hyun (Diary of a Prosecutor). [News1, Newsen]
  • Lee Jong-won (Knight Flower) is reviewing offers for his next project and may become a local beer brewer for the rom-com In the Name of Alcohol – potentially romancing liquor salesperson Kim Se-jung (Uncanny Counter 2: Counter Punch). Production for the series is still in the early stages with PD Park Sun-ho (Business Proposal, Greasy Melo) attached to direct. [Newsen]
  • Speaking of rom-coms, JTBC released stills from Frankly Speaking’s first script reading, showcasing our main cast led by Go Kyung-pyo (D.P. 2), Kang Hanna (Red Heart), and Joo Jong-hyuk (Extraordinary Attorney Woo). With our announcer hero now a ball of jitters from his newfound inability to lie, the shenanigans begin on May 1 – streaming internationally on Netflix. [News1]

The "Knight Flower" leads seem to be winning this week,Lee Jong-won landing a lead role in a rom com and Honey Lee cementing her post pregnancy comeback with 2 Best Actress nominations.

Kwon Yul deserves a much bigger career, i don't know what isn't clicking to be honest, he's got the talent, the looks, the experience and the range, maybe its just bad luck

Kwon Yul indeed deserves so much more. Hope it's just about timing ... and he gets a super awesome role soon.

Excited for the romcoms listed in here (1, 4, 5)! But have mercy, a drama literally focusing on alcohol could quickly become unbearable. Add a drink-hungry family like Haneul’s into the mix, and it’ll be anything but a sober experience… Although must admit that drunk Lee Jongwon can be quite heartbreaking. 🥺😬🫣

Do you think they'll color his cheeks pink every time he's drunk a la Knight Flower? 😊

I don't think you have to worry. Doctor Slump was a special case. I am still convinced its writer had some unaddressed problems with alcohol. Even shows like Drinking Solo, didn't portray such an alarming consumption of alcohol.

I don't think even Doctor Slump approached the level of Bo-ra Deborah. The female lead legit would have met criteria for alcohol use disorder in the United States

I made it through 2 episodes of ENA’s BO RA! DEBORAH (2023) and adios. I passed on JTBC’s DOCTOR SLUMP.

So in my recent visit to Korea while on a hiking tour with a German college student visit her friend doing a semester abroad in Seoul I learned that Koreans are indeed heavy drinkers IRL. She said in Germany in the vending machines you can buy beer. Germans drink a lot of alcohol but “light alcohol”- beer. Koreans by far drink heavier alcohol and a lot more. She was astounded at the degree that she saw from the college students and adults. In her mind Germans pale in comparison. Therefore I now think what we watched in Doctor Slump was likely closer to reality than we may think.

… actually, now that you’re saying it, I realize the word I wanted to use is thirsty. 🤣 I blame it on the lack of morning coffee. 😅

Cheers! 🥂

1) I watched the first episodes of Born Again and it was very bad in my memory... I don't trust this writer... Not sure about the casting neither.

3) I hope Kwon Yul won't be the villain! But my hopes are thin... The important news is that Kim Kyung-Nam is casted in this drama!

4) The question is will he keep his hair long? I'm voting for! Otherwise, I hope the story won't give us too many drunk scenes...

I saw him in an interview that aired shortly after Knight Flower. He was asked if he was keeping his hair long for another role and he said, no, he just decided that he likes having longer hair now. 😍

the art department has their hands full with Chief Detective and they seem to be on top. I don´t think I ever saw this era in a drama ever.

Choi Siwon it is great to see you! No idea about the vibe of this drama? maybe I dont even want it to be comedy bc he can be heartfelt & sincere just the same as funny.

No. 1. TV Chosun’s DNA LOVER. My concern here is Lee Tae-hwan. I was hoping he would pass on this offer for his first post military drama and hold out for something more daring, with a bit more heft.
(I have a soft spot for LTH since I watched his performance as a 19 year old in the great crime/mystery drama MBC’s PRIDE AND PREJUDICE (2014/15) (Kocowa). I watched it in 2016 (my log tells me I watched him first in MBC’s W (Viki US) with P&P immediately following.
At the time I thought the sky would be the limit for this young actor. He has kept active and takes on variety shows but I was hoping for more substantial roles for him. I wonder if he ever contemplated honing his acting in the theater?)

No. 3. SBS’s CONNECTION. My favorite genre is cops/crime/mystery. On that score there are a kot of plusses going for this drama. SBS is a network that knows how to make crime dramas (THROUGH THE DARKNESS (2022) (Viki US) for example). The cast is a plus. Thanks @kurama for pointing out Kim Kyung-nam’s appearance. Like many my biggest concern here is Kwon Yul. I hope he is not once more pigeonholed into being a ‘heavy’ here.

No. 4. ENA’s IN THE NAME OF ALCOHOL. Having hung around kdramas for awhile the title itself is a huge turn off. I have never watched any of the ‘Drinking’ dramas. My quotient for boozers ran out early in SAMDAL-RI with the alcoholic sisters so I pulled the rip cord on that one.
On the other hand I did fall under Lee Jong-won’s spell with his great first sageuk appearance in MBC’s KNIGHT FLOWER (Viki US) earlier this year. I would like to follow him in his next drama. I have to wait and see.
In the meantime for a LJW fix I discovered from a MDL comment that Lee Jong-won’s 2019 baseball miniseries (10 short 13-16ish minute episodes) from Naver TV Cast appropriately called OUR BASEBALL (with Park Jeong-hwa FL and also on the baseball team) is available subbed as a playlist on Youtube here:

I really like Jung Yoo-Jin. Like Lee Tae-Hwan, I've been really surprised that she hasn't had better roles, and hardly any leading roles.

DNA lover, and In the name of alcohol are long listed but I need to know that there isn’t going to be drunk scenes every episode just because alcohol is in the title.

1. Dramaland is still determined to keep Choi Siwon in medical scrubs after LiFS. He's only changed specialities this time.
I'm not so pleased with the angle of Jung Eugene's character. I know this lady can play this kinds of persons to perfection but she should be outta this territory already. Dramagods do something about it.

3. Whether or not Kwon Yul is playing second lead here, I like that he is cast alongside an acting powerhouse Iike Ji Sung.
Kwon Yul, Jeon Mi-do, Ji Sung... My Bluetooth is already connected.
Prosecution- themed...it is twice connected successfully.

4. I hope his character can hold his beer. Kim Se-jung will give him a run for his money. Business Proposal and Counter were recipes for Alcohol.

5. Their faces are down so I can't really recognize these faces. But I see Go Kyu-pil and that's comedy bar raised.
