Staying up for Wie Ha-joon at The Midnight Romance in Hagwon

More promos have come sweeping in for tvN’s upcoming The Midnight Romance in Hagwon, where love awakens in the fog of hazy nights for Jung Ryeo-won (May It Please the Court) and Wie Ha-joon (Gyeongseong Creature) in the newest posters and video teaser.

Our hero’s intentions are heart-flutteringly clear, but star instructor Seo Hye-jin (Jung Ryeo-won) is a tangle of conflicted feelings – though she admits that Lee Jun-ho (Wie Ha-joon) has been on her mind. The teaser then gives us the quick backstory of our two leads, with Jun-ho once being a troublesome student at the hagwon who miraculously got accepted into a good college with Hye-jin’s tenacious tutoring.

Now, ten years later, Jun-ho decides to quit the corporate life and returns to the hagwon to apply as a new instructor. Hye-jin is concerned that Jun-ho will be taken advantage of by others, but her ranting is cut short by Jun-ho asking if these people include her. But our heroine is ever the worrier and while lost in thought, Hye-jin reminds herself that Jun-ho isn’t just Jun-ho anymore – he should now be called instructor Lee Jun-ho.

Speaking of the handsome devil, the tease tries a few “You up?” texts to get Hye-jin’s attention, using both formal and casual (omo) speech. Although Hye-jin giggles in amusement, she’s honest when she tells Jun-ho that she’s unsure how to react. Apparently Jun-ho hasn’t been dropping enough anvils about how he feels, so we’re treated to a charged scene as the teaser ends with Jun-ho confessing that he’s having a hard time holding back.

With direction in the hands of PD Ahn Pan-seok (One Spring Night, Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food) and scripts by Park Kyung-hwa, tvN’s The Midnight Romance in Hagwon will be launching on May 11.

My first encounter with Wi Ha-joon was Something in the Rain, where his character was a 20-something grossed out by 30-something women. How funny he plays a 30-something here attracted to a 40-something. The universe (or this director) has a sense of humor.

My concerns regarding the premise remains. But I don't think I can resist trying this one. Not a chance. Come, May 11. Come soon.

Casting of Wie Ha-joon by the same director sure seems like a secret wink to the fans.

His voice and her giggles have me tied to the show! I'll for sure give it a try cause I love the leads. Let's see where it takes us.

I like what I see so far however, I am a bit concerned about that comment about the others. Is this going to be work place bullying or vigilante rich parents throwing their weight around?

Writers and directors have a tendency to repeat themes. I would not be surprised if there was workplace bullying, but I hope not to the level of Something in the rain. I still have scars from it (disclaimer - I quite liked Something in the rain otherwise).

Hopefully, things have moved on from the need to include the examples of work place bullying shown in A dose of sunshine, Miseang, and Something in the rain as key parts of the plot. I remember being shocked the first time I saw managers kicking staff in the shins and shouting.

I hate to tell you this but I think I misinterpreted what I read and assumed that both were going to be on Viki. I got it wrong. Sorry!
