News bites: October 8, 2023

  • Praise be to the drama gods because Wie Ha-joon (The Worst of Evil) has been cast as the leading man in a romance, potentially joining Jung Ryeo-won (May It Please the Court) who is still in discussions. Titled Graduation, the series is in the planning stages with PD Ahn Pan-seok (One Spring Night, Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food) as the talent behind the camera. [Osen]

  • The first script reading stills have dropped for ENA’s upcoming Moon in the Day, which stars Kim Young-dae (The Forbidden Marriage), Pyo Ye-jin (Taxi Driver 2), Ohn Joo-wan (Penthouse 3), and Jung Woong-in (The Good Bad Mother). With PD Pyo Min-soo (The Third Charm) at the helm and scripts by Kim Hye-won, the fantasy premieres next week on October 15. [Sports Donga]

  • Bae Doo-na (The Silent Sea) and Kim Yo-han (School 2021) will soon be returning to dramaland in a new sci-fi called Family Planning, which has offers out to Ryu Seung-beom (Moving) and Baek Yoon-shik (Vagabond) as well. Marking filmmaker Kim Sun’s (On the Line) first drama project, production is currently in talks to possibly release on Coupang Play. [Star News (1), (2)]
  • Speaking of ENA, a new revenge series called Parole Examiner Lee Han-shin (roughly translated) is in the works, which was the winning entry in KT Studio’s first ever writing contest held last year. Aiming to release sometime next year, Go Soo (Missing: The Other Side 2) has been signed on for the leading role with PD Yoon Sang-ho (Curtain Call) attached to direct. [Ilgan Sports]

  • Over on KBS, a new poster has come out for The Matchmakers, where Kim Ro-woon (Destined With You) and Jo Yi-hyun (All of Us Are Dead) will be taking us along on their mission as they pair up all of Joseon’s golden singles. Airing in the Monday-Tuesday slot, the rom-com premieres this month on October 30.[Osen]
  • In the meantime, MBC released more character posters for My Dearest, which will finally be back on our screens this week. Starring Namgoong Min (One Dollar Lawyer), Ahn Eun-jin (The Good Bad Mother), Lee Hak-joo (Shadow Detective 2), and Lee Da-in (Alice), in addition to Kim Yoon-woo (Delightfully Deceitful) and Lee Chung-ah (Celebrity), the sageuk will be returning with Part 2 of our story this October 13. 1. Jung Ryeo-won is taking a break from the courtroom to focus on romance, the romance they didn't let her pursue in May It Please The Court. Wie Ha-joon included, Little Women did my guy a number.
This is an all out noona romance - a genre I sadly don't exactly enjoy. I love the leads so much. I don't exactly trust the PD. I just hope this is the project where his A-game is on point - the hit in his hit-or-miss.

5. A wise choice to have Jo Yi-hyun stand atop a stool.

6. Of the four lovely characters up there, the only one I'm not exactly itching to see is Eun-ae's husband.
Is that a tear path on Ryang-eum's face?

I have the same misgivings about #1... although I'd love for it to surpass all expectations! Haha one of the reasons I finished May It Please the Court was to see if they'd pay out more than the crumbs of potential romance from their magnetic chemistry!

Even though I find Wie Ha Joon intriguing (Little Women for one) I struggled to get through May It Please the Court because of Jung Ryeo Won and her smug antics. So when I read it was a clear noona story, I said "pass".

Matchmaker is on my list and clearly marketed as "lighthearted". However, lately it seems that every recent romantic comedy on my list begins with the comedy (1st 8 episodes) and then whatever romance may have bloomed is quickly overshadowed by thriller/evil spirits/past lives/ghosts (take your pick) instead of good old-fashioned "mystery" or plot twists.

1. I only liked two dramas of this type: I do I do (2012) and High School King of Savvy (2014). In both dramas, the age gap between the leads was 10 years (or more). In the latter, the leads met when he was still in high school, he was probably 18 or 19 years old. For most of the drama he was in high school. If this drama were created today, the Internet would probably want to destroy it.

Human physiognomy is important in Korea. It's like fortune telling based on appearance. Some people believe that a person's appearance reflects their character, whether they will be successful in life, what they are like in a relationship, etc. According to them, couples with similar appearance have the greatest chance of a successful relationship. It's a long tradition.

7

Thank you for explaining so well. It is really helpful to understand the context better. I can now see that the resemblance was perhaps intentional and it works very well. To a Korean audience the sub-text is immediately clear. It shows that even at the script reading stage the creatives are trying to set by a particular mood to enable the actors to get in character.

I love the PD and FL for "Graduation," and I've liked Wie Ha-joon in the three dramas I've seen him in. But can I be a bit skeptical that he may not have the range for this role? He is very good at what he does, but so far, I've seen him basically play the same version of the stoic, reticent, morally ambiguous man several times.

I'm also sorry to be a grump about Kim Young-dae, but I think there are other young male actors--including his co-star in "The Forbidden Marriage"--who should be offered leading roles before him.

@laurensophie: Let me be a grump with you re KYD. His co-star stole TFM from right under him. I found Kim Wooseok’s acting poignant and memorable, and because I’m impressionable, I couldn’t take it that he played such an awful character in “The MP Doberman” so dropped it.
It would be so disheartening to be a much more skillful and emotionally resonant actor and to lose roles or only get cast as second leads to other actors who are clearly inferior.

He has a lot of fans. His Instagram is followed by 5 million people. I have often read articles or interviews with the creators of Korean dramas that sponsors look at how big a following actors have on social media when offering roles. Sometimes, this is the only reason why a better actor loses the fight for a role to a worse actor.

When I learnt the noona is Jung Ryeo-won, I just accepted it. They have a 10 year difference IRL. And with the plot summary I read on Asianwiki, it makes perfect sense if they choose to keep the age difference at 10. A lot if things happened between Wi Ha-joon's character meeting Jung Ryeo-won's in the academy and he coming back as a tutor so 10 years makes sense for the whole journey.

I just hope the Korean audience do not pull a CCIR stunt in here as they did in CCIR. They should really stop unnecessarily pressurizing already decided planning stage decisions.

CCIR already decided the age difference between Chi-yeol and Haeng-seon and while it the age difference was clear, it wasn't termed a noona romance. National audience however prodded the production into terming it a noona romance, at episode 14-15. They could not just let the drama finish in peace.

So, I don't know what decisions are being made in the planning stages as to what and what the age difference in the characters are. This one is clearly billed as a noona romance unlike CCIR. Still, it doesn't rule out the fact that I'm wary of them rasing dust for another tantrum concern.

2

I thought CCIR it actually wasn't supposed to be a noona romance, that she was supposed to be his age but the actress was older in real life. The drama kept emphasizing how young she was to have a daughter that age

I hate the term noona romance in general, there's such a cliched social expectation of the man being older being the only normal thing that anything with an older woman somehow gets shoved into a vague noona romance category, instead of just being a romance even if the age is not a central part of it. That said, I thought One Spring Night was a lovely drama (minus the awful father) and Something in the Rain was very frustrating, so I hope both that Jung Ryeo Won is in Graduation and that the PD is feeling more in the One Spring Night mood because I'd love both of those leads in a drama that made me as satisfied as One Spring Night.

I'm both scared and excited for My Dearest. I hope they have a good path planned for the second half.

It's funny, but I just glossed over the "noona" part as a) 10 years doesn't seem that significant to me and b) I never thought I'd get behind a romance between a 20 year old man and 40 year old woman, but "Secret Love Affair" is one of the best romances I've ever seen, and it's thanks to this creative team. ("Something in the Rain" was an interesting failure, imo, but not because of the "noona" aspect--the story fell apart for other reasons that had nothing to do with the age of the leads). So the age difference here doesn't both me at all.

As I said above, I have a slight concern about the ML for other reasons, but as @kiara pointed out, this PD has a history of bringing out truly revelatory performances in a range of actors, so I'm hopeful that concern will end up being unfounded.

I second everything you said. SLA was indeed one of the best romances and the chemistry was through the roof. Obviously, the creatives involved should also get the credit.
As I have said before, it is disheartening that there is even such a term among the fandom as a ‘noona’ romance where the commonly occurring inverse situation not only doesn’t have a name, it is hardly ever commented upon even on this site and is accepted willingly and with little thought. This is often an indicator of internalised sexism at best and misogyny at worst because patriarchy over thousands of years has drilled into women (I’m making an assumption about most commenters on this site and hence its relevance to my comment) that they are worthless, uninteresting, undesirable and unwanted unless they are young, can reproduce and provide men with children. So depressing on every front.

Yeah, the noona romance label irks me a lot. Lmao, Namgoong Min is 13 years older than Ahn Eun Jin and there is no dismissive label tossed onto that beautiful pairing to suddenly take away the plot and turn it into a cliche. I don't care for big age differences, especially if the man is a lot older and the fl is very young looking, but if the story is good then any age difference between two full grown adults doesn't matter.

What I thought worked perfectly in One Spring Night was that there was constant communication between the leads, it felt like an adult relationship. Other than the really awful father of the fl who I hated, boundary crossing/callous behavior had acknowledgement and consequences and the leads really talked to each other, something that I think did not get done properly in Something in the rain. I wonder if the second one was an attempt by the PD to fix that mistake in the first one.

I thought Wi Ha Joon was actually very sweet and fun in Romance is a bonus book, which is why I'm totally interested in seeing how he and (hopefully) Jung Ryeo Won spark off each other.

@relisher
Agreed on all points. I also really liked “One Spring Night” for all the reasons you mentioned.
What galls me too is the hypocrisy of people who never once think to single out a situation where the male actors are older/much older but immediately deride the inverse situation. No wonder it is so difficult for older women to have relationships with younger men in RL since the ingrained bias against such a relationship makes some viewers even unable to stomach them in fictional settings such as KDs where many actors are gorgeous and take exceptional care of themselves.

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, but the real-life (assumed, constructed, and not-nature-given) power differential between "men" and "women" is such that it is not reasonable to expect a general acceptance of parity between what it's like to be (a) an older man in a relationship with a younger woman and (b) an older woman in a relationship with a younger man.

I 100% agree that age isn't the issue. It's the power--both recognized and unrecognized--that is accrued to the individuals that is the differentiator.

1

@Seon-ha: Age is actually an important issue here as far as women are concerned. Of course the power differential in any relationship is important and needs to be taken into account but the essence of my point was about why there is a visceral rejection of the so called “noona romances” by many women when the opposite is embraced and normalised.

@gikata , DancingEmma's comment on this comment thread - the one immediately under LaurenSophie's - is the reason why the stunt the netizens pulled in CCIR annoyed me immensely. 1.
The problem with noona romance is that many people see how unlikely the plots of such dramas are. In other types of dramas they can forget that it is not true (because there are some elements of truth from the reality they know) and enjoy the plot, but in these it is not the case. I suspect it's because they simply don't know this type of couples with a successful relationship in real life. I personally knew two couples where the women were over 10 years older than their partners, and in both of them, in addition to being lovers, they were also mothers to them. In the sense that they were much less emotionally mature and ended up being the ones who had to think about the survival of their families. People often know couples where "he" dumps "her" when she is over 50. Or couples when "she" is about 70 and a younger "parasite" appears next to "her". Of course it also happens with same-age couples, etc. Only that statistically there are more couples with an age gap when "he" is older.

I don't see it as social prejudices and behavior. It's about reproductive human (animal) instincts engraved in our DNA. Not everything is about social construct, sometimes is as basic as how we were designed ( programmed for survival of our species). We cannot change that and I see the new efforts to combat it as changing it through a new form of forced social construct.
That being said, it never bothers me to see stories about couples with age differences, no matter if the ML or the FL is older or much older. What matters to me are the smart writing, the actors and the production of it. I have enjoyed One spring night and Something in the rain a lot and I am looking forward to this one since the actor is one of my faves and it is, learning from here, the same director.

4
1

Required fields are marked *

I can see what you’re saying, and also point out, it’s not that simple. If we did allow only our “animal instincts” to rule, older women would leave their older male partners for the younger men as female animals that live in social groups often do. But human society does not permit that. If we were ruled purely by evolutionary behavior, it would be the men pimping and preening, while women sampled the buffet before they had children. We, instead, have slut shaming.

The animal kingdom is full of behaviors that human society no longer follows. Usually, we follow the ones that benefit those in power, which has largely belonged to men, first physically, then with resource accumulation. Social construct isn't being forced now, it has always been forced. But, with the power imbalance between genders now veering in the direction of equality, it is no surprise we see a questioning of these rules.

I guess the good news for some is that there is plenty of pushback to gender equality. The speed of change in terms of human history (not evolution) is dizzying. We really don't know how it will all pan out, but I hope we'll land in the direction of a more egalitarian world. Also, in the direction of better writing, the actors and production. Hope lives eternal.

I know a couple of families where the female was over ten years older than their male partner they both remain married approx 30 years later. One they had children together in the other she already had children from her ex husband. In the latter case she only agreed to them being married if he paid for a face lift when she reached a stage of ‘needing it to not feel like the whole world would know there was an age difference’ I met her 20 years later she had had the face lift.

In both cases the men had facial hair which I think makes men look more mature. In the dramas we watch the men look boyish but I don’t think the women look significantly older in appearance.

The only argument against anec-data is more anec-data.😁 I know some long-lived several successful noona pairings as well. However, I do believe there is a statistical age gap that favors men (around 3 years). Why, see the discussion above, which leads to both the rarity and prejudice against these pairings, both external and internalized within these couples (hence the women wanting face lifts).

The objection to older women being more like mother figures is interesting. Because when we have much older men, they often end up as father figures to the younger women. (I mean, we just had a kdrama where the young woman called her 16-years-older IRL romantic interest ahjussi, and it looked/sounded right.) But that has been more normalized.

I think if people can accept the fantasy of a completely made up world, then having the age be the only thing that makes it somehow unrealistic and unappealing points to blocks people have in their own mind because of their own biases that should not be catered to. I feel the same when I see complaints from (usually men) about women or minorities showing up in historic fiction or sci-fi with prominent/interesting roles, because somehow magic is acceptable but a woman with agency and sword skills, or a ruler who is Black is too far.

The only way to fix this is to just keep pushing out more fictional content that breaks those nonsensical barriers. Women having to "mother" men in heterosexual relationships is kind of a constant refrain in society across all ages, chronological age is not a factor at all.

There are many things in society that people accept as "normal" but fiction should be the first step to consider some of the more internalized social backwardness as flimsy constructs and create a rich universe without it.

3. Such a strong cast and director… and then there’s Kim Yo-han lol.

4. Hmmm… the words “revenge” and perils examiner really does not inspire confidence in me.
