Did you Know? Getting the Comments to Load “Oldest First” Right Now: Another One of Seon-ha’s Temporary Tech Fix Editions
I’m staying far out of the conversation about whether the main post comment threads should or should not load “most recent” or “oldest” by default. However, there is a feature of the site that should let you choose between these two chronologies that is a bit broken right now. Here’s a workaround until the feature is fixed.
The following has worked for me on Chrome (Windows and iOS), Safari (iOS), and Microsoft Edge (Windows). The Fan Wall seems to be working normally, so all that is below has been tested on the main posts only.
If you’re on a main post, and you want the comments to load with the oldest first, you can append the command “?comments=all” to the end of the base URL.
Click that and the comments will load “oldest” first. You can just type “?comments=all” in yourself.
When you submit a reply, it might reload the page you were on with the “?comments=most” command there instead, and it’s back to this reverse chron. Just change “most” to “all,” reload, and that should work.
Advanced Topic: When You Also Want to Go to a Particular Place and Retain the Ordering
I’ve tested it and even if you’re going to a particular comment on a thread, the following syntax works for retaining the “oldest first” chronological order.
No, seriously…thanks for the compliment, @kiara, but the staff are very hard-working and they are, I am 100% sure, on this. In the meantime, we can offer as much grace as we can summon—and send bug reports to hello @ dramabeans.com!!
Hurrah! I was thinking up a Beanie award, like “🫘Benevolent Tech-K-Queen, Detector and Distributor of Functionalizors 🌱”, but then I thought … You already had one such title, right?
Anyways, you have certainly deserved to have one again, I mean, you can win an Oscar twice, so why not?
Do you know if there’s a hack around this problem when you want to permalink a comment on a recap thread, but want the replies to the permalink to be in chronological order?
I have something that works after some tries, but I had to do it manually. I have NO IDEA why the new comment permalinks need to look like they do now. They’re nuts! They take you to some other Twilight Zone Dramabeans world. Anyway. This link, as I say, works for me in the way I think you want:
All I did was to open up the permalink that was offered to your comment there, copy out the comment number, and then append it to the regular post URL.
To say it again with examples…This is the permalink offered for your comment above:
Uh, confession, judge me how you will lmao:
I uh, hadn’t, more than reporting Le Bugs, partly because I tend to be cynical about these things, (given that this is year 6 going on 7 on the new site, et al, etc), and partly because I couldn’t think of a way to say anything without sounding too irritated and ungracious, because of the aforementioned cynicism… but your comment prompted me to write and send one anyway, and I think I did ok at being the Diplomatic Assassin.

So, today’s WWW post URL is:

Click that and the comments load “most recent” first by default.

Thanks for the award, Cecilie!! I’ll always take kudos–although I’m not sure how much this one really deserves 😉
I will say that I use my own advice three or four times a day still–I really can’t stand the “newest first” ordering!

I just copied everything after the final front slash (obvs) and pasted it onto the base URL that has the “?comments=all” command
https://www.dramabeans.com/2023/09/my-dearest-episodes-9-10/?comments=all
Please tell me you’ve emailed to let them to let the powers-that-be know how you feel about all this?

Oooh thank you! I did try something like that but I didn’t quite get it right.
I tried your way and it eventually got something right, although hilariously, it glitches and numbers comments in negatives:
