Umm in all honesty, I used to think i can also speak Korean after watching several dramas and understand some of it too (when no subs are available). But I really think that speaking in a real time situation with native speakers is very different. And there are very different words spoken in a real life conversation too. While Korean is easy, I don’t think by dramas alone one is capable of speaking it accurately. Learning on the side while watching yes but only watching, not maybe even if exposure to entertainment is one good step in learning a new and easy language. But its only one of the steps.
It is interesting to listen to songs I know well now. I know them and what words are coming next but cant always sing along with it and may know the general translation (from looking it up) but not what each verse means.
Korean songs are a bit more difficult, not simply because of the language, but it’s also the intonations, but also the manner it is being said (formal vs. casual Korean), and also composition (which I find is SUPER different in songs compared to everyday speech)
Sometimes when I’m watching I forget that I dont know Korean and think I can turn away and still follow along.
Now I have this image of Beanies going to Korea and just talking away and as they leave people asking each other why these tourists always sound like they are in a drama.
😂😂 when i was in Korea i was terrified to ask the ahjumma in Korean even though i knew the exact phrase to use – what if she replied and i didn’t understand? so ended up using sign and english.
Agreed!! I’ve been into the K-ent world for almost 6 years now and I find that I have picked up a lot of things and I can usually follow without subs but I still can’t speak and can’t formulate grammatically correct sentences.
But I find that when I’m around Koreans here in uni, I can actually understand what they’re saying. Not all the time or all the words but I can understand most of the time.
I don’t get it, i’ve been watching kdramas for 9 years, all i can remember is a smattering of phrases. Most times i can’t remember what it means, but if i ever do watch without subs i would understand those phrases (prolly thanks to context cues). So yeah..jealous but also impressed with those people.
Perhaps it’s like what @missvictrix wrote today, effortless vs effortful fun/hobby..
Oh, same. I only understand the very common words and phrases.
Thank you
Im sorry
What to do/What do I do
I love you
maybe a few more but when Im chatting with someone and I mentioned that I know these tiny phrases in korean because of dramas and they are all, “Oh, really? how do you say (one of the phrases above) ?” and my mind goes completely blank.

I have to put this somewhere:
I’m jealous of all of you that learned another language just by watching Kdramas.
Jealous.
