Help out Boys Over Flowers on Netflix

I received an email from someone at YA Entertainment, which, as you may know, is the company that licenses Korean dramas for sale with English subtitles. I’m passing it along for all of you with accounts at Netflix to help get more Korean dramas available at the online rental service:

Hi,

I need your help. In an effort to continue to reach out to the mainstream with our K-dramas on DVD with English subtitles we have signed on with Netflix. According to their reports there are not enough people adding our titles into their queues and we are at risk of not being able to share this very important and popular genre with the millions of people that Netflix has access too.

If you didn’t already know, K-dramas are enjoyed throughout the world by millions of people already either dubbed or subtitled in several other languages. For some reason it has yet to catch on in the US and Canada outside of mostly other Asians and other ethnic groups.

We will be releasing the wildly popular K-drama Boys Over Flowers this November 17 and Netflix currently has it available on their site but I just got an email this morning saying they will hold the order until they see the numbers prove that there is a demand for this title and our other titles.

Clearly there is a demand for it but, unfortunately, the majority of people who currently watch our DVD’s are collectors and tend to purchase rather than rent. Although we have reached the tip of the mainstream by having our DVD’s available at Barnes and Noble, Costco, Borders, FYE’s and several independent retailers, we are still stunted due to the fact that even they don’t believe that there is a demand yet, so we are given very limited shelf access and a very small number of stores carry our products. Over 90% of our end consumers are not Korean, which means that we KNOW that this is entertainment for ALL and that if given a chance then most people will enjoy the dramas.

Please help me and the K-drama industry a chance to share what we have to offer by asking all your friends and family who have Netflix accounts to add one of our titles into their queues and give it a chance.

The following titles are available at Netflix to rent and there are still so many more to add but we will not be able to unless they start seeing that it’s in demand!

You can start by adding Boys Over Flowers V. 1.

Please send this out to everyone you know!

Thank you very much for your time!

Some people are missing the point.

This isn't ONLY about Boys Over Flowers. It's just one of several dramas you can watch. Feel free to pick and choose.

Also, the advantage of Netflix is for people who dislike the sub-quality of streaming video and prefer to watch kdramas on their television screens rather than uncomfortably on their laptops or computers.

As some of you may have noticed lately, Korean broadcasting companies are ramping up the crackdown on illegal distribution of their copyrighted material. Many streaming videos have been removed just as soon as they're posted. Sites that provide direct links and torrents aren't necessarily safe either.

Dramafever and YA Entertainment's partnership with Netflix are possible legal alternatives that deserve support. In the future these may be the most convenient (if not only) option you may have. Support them if you can.

I stream everything via a PC plugged into the TV screen which acts as the monitor, so everything I stream (including Netflix) arrives on my television this way. There's no need to squint at laptops.

It was only after posting 2 comments on this thread I realised I'm probably the first person to do so in 12 years! 😄😄😄😄😄

I'm glad I have some company!

LOL that's why I deleted this, I suddenly realised this was from over a decade ago!

But oh well, yes, Chromecast! And a cord setting up my TV as a monitor. It's the best. Especially for Korean dramas that have such exceptional cinematography. You can't appreciate them on the small screens.

Okay, I've known about this for awhile now. A good way to find Netflix's inventory of K-dramas is to always keep at least one in your queue. You can always click on the title, look in the left column for "Featured in the following Top 10 Lists:" and go from there.

However, I haven't found a series yet that I didn't have to wait for. Still ... keep it at the top of your queue and Netflix will search for another copy at another location and send it to you if they find one ... along with the next available title in your queue.

In addition to "City Hall", they're going to release "My Sweet Seoul" and "On Air" soon ..... "Bichunmoo" starring Joo Jin Mo is also available, but I didn't see it on their list above.

For movies, they also have "Crush and Blush", "Mother", Haeundae" and "Thirst" coming out soon. Titles like "The Good, The Bad, The Weird", "Treeless Mountain", "The Host", the "Vengeance" and "Whispering Corridors" series are already available.

Hmm . . actually, we get K-dramas in our Borders and Best Buy. In fact, Borders ran a K-drama club once-a-month. I guess that's not true for everybody else?

DramaFever is only available within the US. For the rest of the world, tough luck!

I went into a DVD shop in Seattle once, on Broadway, and asked them if they had any kdramas, like "Sam Soon". I knew the guy a bit already--he was a total film snob, an elite among his skinny, faded tshirt wearing brethren--and I happily watched him squirm because he couldn't admit he didn't know about kdramas. Yes, it was petty of me. Yes, I'm evil and ridiculous. But! I'm almost positive that if I go back to that store, he'll have some DVDs for me.

So I figured it was for a good cause.

How come they don't have Return of Iljimae? That is my favorite Kdrama.
As new as BOF, but much better in quality. Anyway, I'd love to keep the dramas that I like forever.

Boy did they pick the wrong site to mention Boys Over Flowers on!!! So many haters here it's not even worth the try. To many dried up hags with nothing better to do than hate on young girls...SLAM!!!!

@61

Wow, that was really petty of you to say something like that. If that's the way you think, then I'd much rather be a 'dried up hag' then a clueless, classless, selfish, immature 'young girl' like you who doesn't yet know that people have their own preferences and likes. So what if some of us don't like "BOF"? Does that affect you in any way?

Well, you know ... maybe it does. Because if more people didn't like it, it'll stay on the shelves forever and the retailers will have to lower the price on it ... thereby making it accessible to those with little income such as yourself. So ... for you ... SCORE! Woo hoo ... good for you!

i dont understand why netflix wants to push kdrama on their site, knowing that there is a website totally dedicated to kdrama and totally free like dramafever....
i just dont care because here in france we just have one alternative to watch kdramas, it's downloading, and this alternative is just about to end because of a new law (hadopi) about the download....

My wife and are fans of K-Dramas and TV series. I would most certainty let NETFLIX know IF I was able. Regretabley the only method of feedback is via usage and reccomendations. If you are privey to an e-mail address it would be nice if you could advise. Also we would love to see all those on your list included as selections on NETFLIX.

I am NOT sure why people want to bash k-dramas or the people who watch them. Isn't all about freedom of choice and individual taste.

I noticed you didn't list East of Eden. Only Volume 1 is available on NETFLIX. We were watching in Hawaii until the TV company stopped doing biz in Hawaii. We would like the rest of East of Eden made available on NETFLIX

I have Netflix.....first out the box was My lovely Sam Soon and BOF!

now I have seen Asian productions...but I have to admit I havent seen 90% of what was listed! lol seriously! I prefer Kdrama but I just cant find that many...I have a list of 'saved' but when they will be available ? who knows...

one beef is that they messed up the dvd's ...BOF the whole second part ..gone missing....then they have the Japanese version....the ending specials...

If they would just release the dvds I will gladly support the effort...

I absolutely love Korean programs and in particular the period dramas. I am currently watching Emperor Wang Guhn, Happiness in the Wind, Bread, Love and Drama and others. I am now stuck because Netflix does not have Jumong Vol 2 available, but they have Vol 3, which makes no sense. Korean dramas, documentaries and other programing are top notch and the actors are positively fantastic.

Thank you for your work to get these korean movies and dramas on Netflix. Regarding Netflix needing people to add Korean films to their queue in order for them to keep making Korean film available, I suspect people may be opening up the "Watch Instantly" page, see the same film titles that have been there for quite a while, at least a year, maybe longer, and don't look any further. That's wrong, because the newly added Korean film is listed under "Browse DVDs". First, Netflix can help by placing a notice on their home page for a while (maybe 30 days) announcing the availability of Korean film along with instructions of how to access the new titles. Second, Netflix needs to make Korean film available to watch instantly. Using myself as a case in point, I'm now watching the Korean drama "The King and I". Netflix sends it to me by mail (3 hours per DVD), 2 DVDs a week at most. But, "The King and I" is a tremendous show and if I can watch an episode(s) elsewhere on the web I am going to do that. Not only will I do that but so will everyone else. Make these Drama's "Watch Instantly" and I suspect the turn over for Korean dramas and movies will increase significantly.

My wife and I have been watching Be Strong Geum-Soon and we're totally obsessed with it. The problem is that the next dvd is always on short wait so we have to wait for the next one. I even upgraded our netflix account to 2 dvds at once so we can try to get ahead of the pack. Other people are obviously watching this stuff!

Hi!
Boys Over Flowers was my first Korean drama ever. I'm not Korean, but completely fell in love with it and looking for more on Netflix. I added a bunch over the past few months to my queue, but it seems they have all disappeared! They are not available on Watch Instantly either! Do you have any idea?
Thanks!

I tried watching BOF on NF yesterday, having never seen it (and to be honest, it has never appealed). I was instantly repelled by the female lead with her gurning, petulance, screaming, and over-acting. It was like watching a spoilt toddler that I just wanted to ferociously slap. Then I discovered her family were just as irritating, so started to FF through all scenes with any of them unless LMH was on screen.

Well I could happily watch him reading the newspaper or waiting for a bus, so I persevered through 4 (very short) episodes thanks to my decision to FF, but in the end I just couldn't take it anymore. I'm sorry YA Entrtainment, but I'm not willing to be tortured over 25 episodes. That actress is seriously horrible at her job. How did she even get it? A mystery to me.
