Product placement sneaks its way into drama dialogue

If you’ve been watching MBC’s campy weekend action drama A Man Called God, you may have caught on to one of the phrases oft-uttered between Song Il-kook and Han Go-eun: “Why not?”

Turns out that line is a bit of stealth advertising. Rather than inserting a product directly into the drama, advertiser Samsung Card has chosen to promote its brand slogan. As one of their marketing reps explained, “It’s one of our ways of product placement (PPL). The phrase ‘Why not?’ tells our customers that we can do whatever they want. In the drama, Song Il-kook plays a character who can do whatever he wants… Therefore, the PPL marketing melds in naturally as dialogue.”

Whether you like it or not, product placement is on the rise in Korean dramas. Part of the reason for that is soaring production costs; to off-set the ever-increasing drama budgets, production companies are relying more and more on exporting the shows overseas and incorporating product placement. Some shows have crossed the line by overdoing the PPL marketing, as last year’s Style was criticized for doing. Now, advertisers are choosing to get more creative with the modes of delivering their messages to audiences.

Using a catchphrase as product placement is unusual, but who wants to bet we’ll be seeing (er, hearing) more of that in the future? After all, recall how certain phrases have come into common use because of the dramas that popularized them: My Girl had “You will be blessed!,” Fantasy Couple had “Look at that” (꼬라지 하고는), and Style was inundated with “With edge!” Now imagine if they got paid every time they said it.

Well, Style was a bit of an outlier. The product placements weren't even hidden at all. Some scenes really did feel like a commercial.

The question is though, is there anything wrong with product placement? It's a bit silly, yes, but no harm done right? It wasn't like we were going to go out and buy a ferrari or a refrigerator?

I guess my question is, do people really "fall" for commercials?

If I see that Javabeans ends every post with, "signing off for now from my awesome Macbook Pro, have a very happy Apple-licious day!" am I going to change my feelings about MBP's (they are so slooooow) or about iPhones (cannot convince a bberry user to switch to an iPhone, trust me)?

I think if advertising allows k-dramas to exist, then so be it. It won't necessarily change my opinion about anything, but that's okay, right?

Is anyone "hurt" by having product placement in dramas?

"Why not?" as a product placement? I never would have guessed. It's not like they flash a Samsung Card every time they say it.

By the time the product placement in Style started to annoy me that show had other issues that just blew my mind.

In YAB it was obvious that Baskin Robbins was a sponsor, but it wasn't insultingly obvious. The phone placements (and sometimes non-placements) are obvious, but then everyone has one of those. I spent a while pondering whether the lawyer in WUAS had gotten an HP and which model on that new touchscreen PC that he bought. A little product placement info there would have pleased my inner geek.

momosan - signing off from a quad core MacPro, which is wicked fast, rarely is featured in commercials and isn't even cute - and the rumored day in the 3rd quarter that Verizon gets their iPhone is the day one will end up in my hot little hands.

I watch this drama every weekend, totally into it, but I thought it was funny why mostly all of the characters mention a "why not?" in every episode at least once or more. Now I understand the reason why they did so.

At first I thought it was because that it was either this was the only English phrase they liked, because the characters Vivian(Han Go Eun) , Micheal (Song Il Gook) and Jin Bo bae (Han Chae Young) all said "Why not?" just like in Smile you, the character Hae Sae's Mom, would always repeat, "Anyways, Anyways"

Actually, I forgot to mention my favorite product non-placements. If you put a sticker over the Anycall logo on your phone, or a sticker over the Apple on an Apple computer....yeah, we still know what it is. But my favorite has to be the cars. If you take an Audi, and put a little cover on the Audi logo on the grill - sorry, it still looks like an Audi logo. 8-)

As I get older I'm just less naive and am now totally fine with product placement as long as it doesn't insult the viewer and is non-obstructionist in its display.

The "Why not?" line has been cracking me up for awhile, it's actually code for "Get the f*ck out of my face, beeyotch" when Michael says it. I didn't realize I should be buying a cellphone instead of LOLing.

Too bad AMCG can't have too many product placements, its not like Bugatti, Panerai, and a slew of uber-exclusive rich toys should advertise when the viewer hardly can count the number of zeros it takes to buy one, so when I see all of Michael's fab toys, it suits his character rather than as a product placement. Except for the matching jeeps MK and Spy Guy (aka Kim Min-jong playing a guy nearing the edge of psychotic) drives, one red and one white. I'm guessing Jeep may have gotten a buy one get one free deal. :-P

I also wished YB had more product placements, maybe is HTK had spliced together a cellphone with a computer and made a iPad like thingey as a gift for GMN instead of a pig-rabbit, I would have bought that.

i've noticed that cell phones are [probably] one of the biggest PPLs in dramas; i think BBF used them a bunch and i just remember taking note of the cellphones in dramas that i watch. but yeah, it doesn't really bother me as long as it's not overly blatant/annoying. :3

It depends on how product placement is used really. If it's non-obtrusive or used with some sort of purpose then I guess I'm okay with it. Obviously if it's rather blatant then I'd be rather annoyed since it shows that whoever helped create/produce the film/movie put more effort into product placement than being creative. I understand that there are rising costs in production, so I feel sympathetic to those who resort to product placement. I would say I am much more comfortable when a show/movie has some sort of message to send because as viewer I'm more inclined to analyze that point of view and interpret it accordingly (one obvious example that comes to mind is the environmental message of Avatar). Still, people shouldn't estimate the power of advertising, whether it be subtle or not, which is why I'm wary of product placement of any sort in shows/movies.

the car companies have it big with Kdramas too. and it looks stupid.
how could everyone (related or unrelated people) be driving the same make of car (albeit different models) in the show?

first noticed BMW covering Stairway To Heaven (KSW zipping up and down highways) ... Goong had VW I think ... there were more in other dramas.

Most recently (LYATT comes to mind) - Volvo was make of choice ... and Merc might be doing Personal Taste ( Lee Min Ho is in a GLK).

as for psychological impact - recall reading studies on this. even if common sense dictates ... when it boils down to choice - you DO recall a certain product bec it's sublimally programmed into your recognition (whether it irritates or otherwise).

And to follow up on @10 Momosan's comment, the "hiding" of logos seems to make you concentrate on them all the more. When the little pink and green outfits in sauna scenes of the Woman Who Still Wants to Marry had tape over the logos, I was thinking, hmmm... if you live in Seoul do you know exactly which sauna this is? Or was it just cheaper to use real outfits and cover up the logo than to have wardrobe whip up enough for a crowd scene? And the logo on GMN's T shirt in You're Beautiful that looked vaguely like a large black horse -- in the long shots it was clear, but the close-ups had it fuzzed out. I certainly focussed on that, but am too fashion clueless to know what it represents. I am not the target demographic , so it doesn't matter too much if I just don't get it.

because they're not being offered the best possible experience...a product placement can take away from the atmosphere or believability.

yes, but as someone mentioned before, it can also hurt the experience when they try to blur it out so that they don't get caught up with copyrights and avoid product placement.

it kills me everytime they blur out the mac logo, or try to blur out the land rover logo, because i can so obviously see the apple shape or see: L-------R on the car

@samsooki - your scenarios were HILARIOUS! but yeah - i don't think it really hurts. BUT it definitely sticks in my mind...

after all - seeing the iPhone used excessively on the show Chuck makes me REALLY want to switch over from blackberry to iPhone. i'm aware of all the product placement - but i still choose to buy into it, since i can be a materialistic-techie geek... that is, until i look at the price and look at the lint fuzz in my wallet.

I can't say more about PPL however I have a TO DO list and buying a new Coway water filter system (as like in Style) and a new refrigerator (as like in Oh My Lady, MinWoo's apt.) are on my list.~ .. ~

I have a question....in many dramas, the men's suit sleeves have the label still sewn on. Is this meant to be a product placement too? Rarely able to actually read the brand but it's weird.
And I do agree, when all the stars in a drama drive the same line of cars, infiniti, bmw, etc. that's too obivious, even though the logos are blurred out.

Well... among the list of things that are potentially harmful to an audience's k-drama watching experience... I'm not rating it as particularly lethal.

On the whole, product placement not a huge deal - on the list of things to change about k-dramas (or television dramas / movies in general), it would probably place lower as a higher priority than, say, re-thinking the casting of the latest "it" cf model / pop singer who wants to "act," but lower priority than, say, stopping the recycling of the same love triangle cliche followed by one or more characters going abroad to study at the end of the drama. :)

Dramas cost a lot of money to produce, and this is a reality that probably won't change in the future.

I mean, House MD is one of my favorite shows, and sure, you see Apple MacBook Pros in every scene, but it's not so much of a big deal. It's a bigger deal to me that you see immunologists doing heart surgery, plastic surgeons doing brain surgery, and a 32 year old Dean of Medicine... but, it's a tv show, I suspend reality, and it's fun to watch... no harm done? :D

In the last several American Idol seasons, there were big red Coke tumblers in front of each judge, and all top 12 contestants advertised heavily for Ford cars. That's just the norm and smart way to market the products.

Well at least product placement is relegated to one liners. In Philippine recent drama, it is much worse. Situations, storylines will be disrupted as contrived scenarios recalling commercial skits and taglines from other advertising campaigns of the products the show is sponsored by get reenacted by the characters of the show. To top it off, Philippine dramas still get commercial breaks!

For an example, for our own version of Wonder woman never forgets to buy from the local neighborhood store some cellphone credits. Instead of going through her transformation sequence right away, she goes to the nearest store and painstakingly demonstrate how to top up your cellphone with credits. Then she goes off to transform and save the day... WTH?!?

This is one creative way of PPL......But I really really hate PPLs. And all those brand censoring/blurring. I got used to it after watchign a few series, but once I return to Jdoramas, the feeling returns! How I wish I can watch the dramas without being distracting by all the blurring of brand names, making it feel so commercial instead of artistic. But well, it's how the industry there works, so no choice I guess.

Actually ,whether we approve or not these marketing guys will market their products they are just more innovative/creative in doing so . They've got mouths to feed so they have to make a living y'know. As long as they do not prevent you from enjoyment your dose of daily /weekly drama -let them be . Sometimes ,the placement is funny , so it adds pleasure ,too .
