First order of business: Yummy faction roll call!

Go Yummy/ Yeo-mi ^_~ !

@Rovi
Thank you for your extensive and entertaining attempts to write yummy in Korean and coming up with the contraction Yeo-mi :)

@orenji13
Thank you for suggesting the wink, which is very appropriate, since he uses to great effect in SS. :)

Could someone help me with some information about how to view "I am Legend" on line. I was watching it on Dramacrazy but I can no longer see it.

Thank you.

First time posting in an open thread~! Mm, haven't started watching MGIAG yet, still waiting for the subs to be released so that I can watch it all together... It's a pity Playful Kiss is doing so badly! Hopefully it'll gain a bit now that Baker King is done. =) Can't wait for Sungkyunkwan Scandal subs too, I'm really looking forward to watching that, so for now I'm staying away from all kinds of spoilers (yes, that includes those teeemptiiing recaps!) Anyway, good job to all the recap-ers out there, and thanks for all the effort! =) Have a good friday everyone! =D

It's only three days old, and it has really really really REALLY simple layout for now, but we need more people to keep it alive. If any of you would like to join - we've got tons of pics xD and videos and gifs and some news - here's the address: http://joongkiinternacional.foroweb.org

TGIF everyone! :) I have mixed emotions this week (regarding dramas that is)...

- I'm happy about the recent developments between the main characters on My Girlfriend is a Gumiho but sad about the unfolding of the hindrances on their life.

- Playful Kiss isn't really that bad... it isn't the worst drama I've watched but ouch. The ratings are a bit painful and they even shorten the episodes down to 16... I wonder how they'll manage to put all details in there without being flat. I hope they'll recover next week now that Baker King ends.

- Runaway will be airing soon. :) Rain's coming!

Yea, I get affected by dramas. LoL XD I'm totally addicted to MGIAG that's why I get carried away with the story.

Love the cast and its always cool with eye candy - I think it will do well beacuse it has a - OMO whats going to happen next ! thing going for it which playful kiss does not. Hello Everyone! Hope you are all doing well. :)

I'm currently watching...SKKS, MGIAG, Gloria, Baker King, and just started City Hall...the only downside is that I rely on subs. :/

Anyway, I'm absolutely in love with SKKS and heartbroken that license is pending on viikii at the moment. I love the cinematography...it's just so beautiful to watch! The music is perfect, and the characters are all so intriguing. I love the pace and how the story is unfolding--the mystery and the interwoven story lines of the characters--I'm absolutely hooked. & It doesn't hurt that the characters are adorable...just fell for Moon Jae Shin when I saw his adorable hiccups...and his smile. *swooon*

MGIAG - To be honest, I'm losing interest in this drama...I think because I keep on comparing it SKKS in terms of plot. I've realized that as much as I love SMA and LSG and their characters...there's really not much their characters, and none of the secondary characters are memorable. I feel like I would have enjoyed it more if I knew the mythology behind the story...and DJ's past wasn't so hush hush. I feel like I would've understood his character better. I mean mysteries are fun...as long as there are more to the character than the mystery alone (if that makes any sense). Yay for romance and such, but I'd like to see more from the other characters and the mythical aspect. Though I think episode 12 definitely was best compared to the others, with the appearance of the goblin and revelations of the consequences.

Gloria - Patiently waiting for subs on this one for episode 8 but I absolutely love it! Anyway else watching it? I like how its not the typical kdrama, so far there are two leads (Chunhee and Bae doo Na) with their own somewhat "separate" love lines (for a lack of better words). I like the development on both sides; for one lead it's slow, and the other its quick paced. There's something about this drama that makes me absolutely addicted. It's actually like baker king sort of but without baking (it's singing) and without the violence. Loving it so far--has humor, romance, and of course drama (but not too melodramatic!)

(sorry for any grammatical errors/confusion!)

I found you someone who has similar taste to me.
I like SSK and Gloria, I know MGIAG is good but I don't know why I dropped it. I like the humor and romance in Gloria but feel bored each time Gloria sings (OMG she's a singerm - this makes I am Legend more beautiful). SSK is really fresh and lovely.
CITY HALL: One of my favor! so sweet drama!

Yay! I have Dramabean's recaps on the side for City Hall since I'm not too familiar with Korean Politics, but I'm really enjoying it thus far.

As for Gloria and singing, I was skeptical at first about the singing bit. I can't sit through songs anyway in tv shows and movies. However, so far she has two songs, and they've only played the songs fully once or so. I actually don't mind, but I don't get particularly excited either...except for that one song with the fishermen? The slow paced folk song. I don't know what it's called but gosh, I thought that was lovely... until the guy killed with the saxophone...but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

I didn't care for the Taiwanese version of PK either but I love the Korean version and I am fine with it not having cliffhangers. As a slice of life drama it is good. I love SKK Scandal! I don't see anything in there to compare to BOF but it is very Hana Kimi (which I adore). Such a great show!

Sad to hear that PK's ratings are so bad, since I literally laughed my way through the last ep. The chicken sweater part killed me. Waiting for this weekend to watch both MGiaG eps at once. This makes the time between these eps and the next ones considerably shorter :)

I know I don't say it enough, but thanks to all the viikii subbers for their SUPER FAST subbing on both of these great shows!!! I swear they are literally up and ready the day of the show (U.S. time). And thanks to with_S2 for their quick softsubs as well (cuz MGiaG is totally a keeper!!).

Back to work.. at least I have the next 2 days to relax after this insane one.

Playful kiss is another surprise love, I thought KHY would drive me crazy but his acting doesn't bother me. thankfully Hani is not annoying and stupid so we can actually see why Seung Jo would fall for her, which is a problem the TW version had. She's teaching him how to be more human.

But yep, we have showers on all eight floors but no gym. So that should've tipped me off. Except it didn't and I just spent the morning eating a dozen donuts. At this rate, I'd be surprised if I didn't turn morbidly obese within the next month.

There are plenty of jobs that have showers at work. When you demand lots of time from your employees, it is almost mandatory. The real trick when you go for the interview is to check not for the showers but for the full kitchens, cots and nap rooms. If the place has those and they are in use...run for it! You will never leave or have a life outside of work again.

Tricks to keep employees inside and working are mainly used on highend corporate levels on the coasts and major metro cities around the world. While the majority of people are expected to work there 9-5 and go home like normal people. (me now). Some of these corporations you may see people woking 15-16 hours straight for a light day where some may not go home at all.(me then)

You are not a bumbkin for not knowing it. You are normal and blessed for it. I wish I knew it all those years ago.

I always wondered how people in NYC paid those astronomical apartment rates... I guess that's the answer to that question.

Well... y'all could come down here and live for a lot cheaper, but life would be a lot slower. And hotter. When most Yankees come for Elvis days they faint from the hot. :)

I'm really sorry that you used to work for that many hours. I worked three jobs (teaching high school inner city so no showers, coaching cheerleading, and catering) when I was in grad school, and I was exhausted by the end of the day. I would have paid for a shower at work.

0

the south sounds lovely. I would love the heat, particularly with winter looming around the corner.

0

You should move down, Hunterbear! All the cool people are doing it. Seriously. Where I live there is a huge Yankee population, most of whom have immigrated within the last ten years. It's pretty cool.

Oh, and working too hard will kill ya. I learned fairly soon after college that I'll settle for less money if it means having a short commute and a better quality of life. I have family and friends in NYC, and I love visiting, but there will be a sex scene on Korean network TV in prime-time before I live in said NYC. Come on down where life is more laid back, y'all!

0

haha thanks for the invite lahlita. The south sounds lovely. the farthest south I've been is charlotte and I loved it.

I whine a lot but I love my said job. It's probably since I've been in academia for so long that I've forgotten how the real world works. But hopefully I'll get to retire soon enough. I'll let mr hunter do all the bread winning while I lay back and sip on my sweet tea.

0

Hah! We do have a full kitchen (which is where I spend most of my time), no cots..although there are plenty of comfy couches. I haven't seen the light of the day since tuesday. But yeah, I started walking up all eight floors, and I walk to work (about 3 miles?)..on days I get to go home. But cubicle sit ups sound like a great idea. Well at least I've the rest of the weekend off. Time for one of those sleep marathons. My personal best has been 16 hours, so I'm going to try to beat that. Poor mr. hunterbear, I should really spend more time with him.

Yeah along with alarms to wake them up after their power naps. Read this in an article. How much to believe?? Any Google employees lurking here?

I pretty much figured out the whole work/life balance issue after working my way through university. Sacrificed the whole prestigious and elite pulling 18 - 20 hr work weeks with lots of glamour and flying for a steady 8 am - 6 pm job which allows me to get home in time to catch my favourite Korean dramas, and spend time with family and friends, and actually have a life outside of work. People around me think it's kind of a pity, but hey, whatever makes you happy...makes you happy!

Hmmm, I could ask my cousin; he works for Google. We never discuss work at family reunions though. o , 0

Where is my TEGA? (pouts) I have not seen her all week and it makes me cranky.

I'm loving SKKS! This week I had convinced myself that it was a Wednesday/Thursday drama, so I was panicking when I couldn't find the releases... and then I remembered that I already got two episodes this week and I was so disappointed! I hate it when my brain does things like that.

PK is my cotton candy of choice, and surprisingly my step-son has been watching it off and on with me. Happy me!

Aw, I'm here, Unni! I love, Love, LOVE that you missed me. I'm sorry I haven't been on too terribly much, but this week has been hectic. But I can never be bothered to work on Fridays, so here I am! :-)

I've been watching PK and it's not bad. Jung So-min is too cute. But it's definitely something I watch when I'm eating/reading/doing other stuff, as opposed to MGIAG, which has my undivided attention. I'm really curious to see what kind of rating next Wednesday's PK pulls in.

Also, I totally forgot that my nephew was your step-son. That makes so much more sense. I was wondering how such a young unni already had a teenager, but this is not the place for those questions. LOL. My weekend is exciting. Seeing a college friend and her baby tonight (she and her husband flew in from Massachusetts today), seeing another college friend tomorrow morning for brunch (she drove down from DC), and yet another college friend tomorrow evening for a fun Games Night at her place (she lives 15 minutes away :-) ). My life is so full; I am content. How was your week, unni?

Okay. Now that we have custody, I am sticking to substitute teaching at the local school system so that I can be home for him... but that means that no teachers called in sick this week so I've been booooooooored. I worked out in my flower garden a lot. You need some marigolds? I've got six billion or so...

Sounds like you're in for lots of fun! I've got a festival tomorrow downtown, and some of my friends are going to do an Aztec dance performance, and then Sun Records is going to do an exhibition with some local bands. Some of my old students want me to come to a gospel performance at noon, so I might meet up with them.

So your nephew (who is a quarter Korean) was really sad because his friends called him an anime character. He's got Korean eyes, but bright red hair that sticks out everywhere. I told him that he was completely beautiful and in a few years girls will be going nuts over his exotic features, but he doesn't believe me. What do I say?

0
9
reply

Required fields are marked *

Oh, that's hard. Poor thing. I'm conjuring up an image of a teenaged-boy with Korean eyes and red hair in my mind, and he looks beautiful! So much love.

First of all, the fact that he even confided this in you shows that you're doin' it right, Unni. I've worked with adolescents quite a bit, and it's amazing how loving and open they are when they feel wanted and secure. They get a bad rap. I would say get him talking some more. Ask him why he was bothered and listen to what he says; it'll give you a window into how to approach the discussion.

*Putting on Psychology Cap*

I spent my childhood and tweens being teased "in fun" in two different societies and it was really hard. I hated feeling like I was different, and that people constantly remarked on me looking different. That could be the case with him. If so, talking about his "exotic" features might make him feel even more isolated. Your step-son has one Korean grandparent. Based on his red hair, I can hazard a guess at the ethnicity of the other three, and thereby could make some assumptions about his facial features and the perhaps the hue of his skin as well. While I won't, I will say that certain segments of Americana do have a disturbing tendency to exoticize people and to assign them to The Other category, and this can be really hard on a teenager. If he doesn't believe he's beautiful, or that girls will like him, it means he's seeing himself the way he thinks his friends see him, and that's sad.

On the other hand, he could be frustrated with his friends' narrow-minded interpretation of his features and feel annoyed by their comparing him to a distorted caricature -- although I doubt that this is the case. Many teenagers aren't that self-actualized. Many adults aren't either (hello, plastic surgery epidemic!).

So I'd say be honest with him. Tell it to him like it is because teenagers can handle it, and knowledge relieves anxiety. I was 12 when my mother sat me down and had what was the first in a long line of deep conversations. That there are certain expected feature-combinations for "normal-looking" people in this society. That these norms are false -- even if I also believe in them -- and people who judge me based on those norms have the problem, not me.

Tell your step-son to think about why his friends said what they said. Was it to tease him? If so, they're douches. Or was it just because they can't get past the fact there are actually people out there with Asian-looking eyes, but who don't have black, flat hair? Well, there are, and that doesn't make him a cartoon, it makes his friends' statements ignorant. He is a product of four grandparents, and there's nothing wrong with them, so there's nothing wrong with him. If he is empowered to think critically about the thoughts and actions of others, he'll be able to see that the fault lies in the way they think, and not within himself. He is just as beautiful, and as normal, as the next person. Tell him this, and tell him often.

It won't be easy, and he may not understand what you're trying to say right off the bat. You'll find yourself having this conversation over and over again for several years, but he'll be fine as long as he knows (counter-intuitively) that even though his combination of features may be statistically infrequent, he himself is not different. He's not special. He's not exotic. He's just himself. And he's beautiful.

*Taking off Psychology Cap, Donning Gossip Hat*

Seriously though, I bet your boy is too gorgeous! There must be some reason why every other Kpop idol has ruined, fried hair from trying to get a look that he comes by naturally. But I wouldn't mention that to your little one; there may be some cognitive dissonance if he's trying to accept himself based on the fact that people suppress their own natural looks to get a feature-combination he's born with. It'll just make him feel more unnatural.

Ironically, in a few years, once he's confident enough in himself, he's going to be working his "exoticness" hard, because the girls really won't be able to get enough of him! Then you'll have an entirely different kind of problem on your hands.

Okay, I'm crying a bit. I hate it when he hurts, but what you said made me feel so much better. I will definitely take your advice and talk to him about it in those terms. Being a parent is so frackin' hard! I needed to hear everything you were saying, and I can't tell you how much I appreciate it!

He's gorgeous and he's tall (13 years old and an inch shy of 6'), and I think that his friends are jealous of him.

You are the best little sister on the planet! I'm gonna keep you!

0

Aw, don't cry, Unni. Your son sounds amazing; you're so blessed. On a thoughtful note, he sounds like a sensitive, beautiful soul. On a shallow note, 13-years-old and already 5'11"? And gorgeous to boot??? Omona, how amazing! Cutie!

Yeah, his friends are green with envy, is what it is. Jealous a-hole biatches are jealous, although your son won't believe that yet. But he will one day. And heaven help everyone when he understands just how beautiful he is. :-) Don't worry, he'll be fine. He's lucky to have you.

0

Sacrebleu, this was long! Sorry, Unni. I didn't want to half-ass it since I can identify with what your little one is going through. Hopefully someone else will also address your question so you get more than one opinion. This is such a diverse readership, I'm willing to bet that lots of other people on here had to come to terms with looks/cultures/expectations/whatever that were outside the norm of the society in which they grew up.

Who dares say such things! We shall have strong words, now where did I put my dragon slaying sword? But all kidding aside:

To Brookeve's son:
We don't know each other most likely we never will. It's all right, since like you, I do know what it means to look different from all the people around you. I won't say it doesn't matter, it does - but only because of how much it hurts this moment. You may not believe me now, but take it from someone a few years older, it really doesn't matter.

Because, when you get to be a little older, you will find out the world is so much bigger than you think it is- absolutely filled with incredibly different people; and from amongst them you will find yours. Not people who merely look like you, there are thousands of those ( I am not just saying that, come to NYC and you will see) but people who will speak to your heart, "kindred spirits" you might say. With whom, you will find acceptance and belonging, all the things I desperately wanted at your age.

I found those things and those people in college, and also in the most unlikely of place - a blog about K-pop culture! Growing up into your skin is a painful business, but you will do it, and I have no doubt, become a very handsome noona killer ^_~

My oldest said earlier this week, "Are there no Korean men in Texas?" (Yes, dear, but not locally grown.) Back on topic,

HUGS to you, and him, especially. Seriously, there's going to be so many women all over him .... if he could just have a snapshot of his future, enough to get him through anything he's hearing and feeling now with confidence that it will all change.

My high school friends were the first to call me a bishōnen female, and I've learned to live w/ that and accept it. It used to get embarrassing being teased as so.

Somebody recommended watching I Am Legend through the Viikii feed? Prepare to be frustrated. At both download sites I use, chunks of the Viikii-subbed segments of IAL are missing Engl. subs, especially the legal stuff. Only the romance & the rock band scenes seem to have consistent subs. I'm depending on the recaps here for certain parts of the story. Same problem with eps. 13 & 14, which I saw yesterday. Anybody know what the problem is?

Kellie, I've found this to be true on more than one series when the conversations revolve around more complex topics than everyday chatter: I think that means the subbers are young and/or not native speakers, meaning they are unsure how to sub the complexities of the language or don't grasp enough of the language yet.

Which makes it all the more of a gift when subs are good, really good.

Required fields are marked *

I think they're subbing it ridiculously fast, though. Episode 13 was finished subbing 48 hours after it was aired wasn't it? I remember watching it on a Tuesday, when I'm sure it was aired on Monday. Episode 14 is taking longer. I think coz of the legal stuffs.

They're definitely way faster than traditional fansubbers that have you download, though. That can take forever sometimes.

That's very true; it seems in the last year, subbed episodes are up very fast, sometimes with in 12 hours of the original airing. Amazes me, I know subbers are losing sleep to do this!

im a PK addict. love it. i dont know why ratings are low. its quite funny. duckie just cracks me up. ha-ni is adorable. i like it more than the taiwanese version. i think sung jo min's hani is adorable and lovable... compared to Ariel Lin's that borders on irritating. kim hyun jung is okay as baek sung jo. his acting may not be topnotched but he is fun to watch. he looks good when he is cold and smirking and looks good when he is happy and laughing. this guy is just good looking. and there is great chemisty between kim hyun jung and sung jo min. they are believable as a couple.

i was watching playful kiss at the same time with it started with a kiss. but i decided to drop the taiwanese version so i can get that feeling of not knowing what will be next... i just love this drama... it is happiness.

"It is happiness." Yes! That sums up Playful Kiss for me.

As for the low ratings I guess that's because PK hasn't revved up its engine yet, which is what I'm assuming is bothering most people....

And, er, why? Most romcoms follow this formula: LOLs --> Angst --> Resolution. I don't expect an intricately plotted drama. I expect some good times, some bad times, and a happy ending.

I'm still in love with MGIAG but I think that as the series goes on, it's only inevitable to see its flaws.

I really was happy to see that the secondary characters got more air time *cough*Fox Hunter*cough* and that Noona was to the point where she didn't give a crap anymore.

That, to me, was what felt real. MGIAG is a fantasy spruced up drama, but what makes it worth watching is that it reminds viewers now and again that there's heart there.

I still cringe every time I see that stupid hourglass.

That I could do without. Also, please no more stalker scenes. Can't you think of anything more creative Hong Sisters???

0

I didn't like to say it, but I've grown more irritated with the series as it has gone on: the leads, which I originally had trouble buying the chemistry between, have done a better job with the material given them in recent episodes, BUT, I am never not aware that I'm watching a Hong sisters drama, and I was hoping for them to grow a little more.

While some of the plot devices have been good, the humour has been very good, the characters themselves have left me a little more flat than any of their previous works. The acting itself is not the problem, its the material they are given. Sigh. But I think I'm fairly alone in my discontent.

Hi Bob!

We would need name tags with on-line names. Real life ones would be too complicated to remember. Then we would need to go to the nearest K-restaraunt and eat all the lettuce wraps and tokkbokki we could stuff in our faces. Find an all night norabang bar and drink soju while singing nothing but Kpop till our ears bleed. I'm sure Bob can handle it :)

I can't wait to try a K-restaurant and soju! I guess that it would have to be somewhere where there was a significant K-population (AKA not here).

I'm a PK fan, and I love the anime version the most. Reading about the drama being cut made me go.. oooo, no wonder they're compressing 3 episodes (of the anime) in 1 after following that storyline quite religiously before.

Frankly speaking.. seeing that the japanese version only has 9 eps, I'm thankful for the 16 eps promised to us by the PTB of MBC. I was worried that it'll be 10 or 12 *gasp* ..which means it'll end at the..

*spoiler* *spoiler* real wedding like ISWAK *spoiler* *spoiler*

If they could arrive at the introduction of Hani's love rival in ep 6, I'm quite sure they can at least end it satisfactorily on the 16th ep. And remember, Group 8 has signed that PK treaty with Youtube promising us a viewers-guided storyline that will probably completely deviates from the original arc. I wonder who's gonna get wacked or kidnapped or worse.. EXPELLED~ ..in those precious 10 minutes.

I love that the Korean version 'explains' how the two fall in love. I hate it when a drama tries to patronize me by feeding me a storyline that forces me to just accept that its two main characters are meant to be lovers. But with PK, I can look at these two stubborn kids and acknowledge albeit grudgingly that they should be together even if they'd end up murdering each other on the marital bed when they're in their 70s.

Anyway, now that it's confirmed to end at ep 16.. despite feeling depressed at the unhappy turn of things at the rating table, at least I don't have to hold my breath every 2 episodes worrying on whether MBC'd just cruelly terminate the show the next week.. phew.

Hi! Just want to make a comment here about GIANT....I just saw a "normal" photo of Sean Richard who was the doctor in Jejoongwon.....WOW!!!!

What boggles my mind is......why couldn't they have done the same "age" process with the older brother in GIANT and kept him as lead actor because he was so darn good! The actor now isn't anywhere near to what he should look like as a older brother!!!! Gang-mo is great....perfect as aged 2nd brother. Darn....darn.....looks like older brother got shorter!!!! Oh well......

Coffee House and Bad Guy just finished off.....next coming on is I Am Legend and My GirlFriend is A Gumiho. Guess there was a reason why I didn't start to follow those 2 from the beginning! :-)

I haven't seen playful kiss, but I have read the recaps and it doesn't seem so bad. I think it just suffers from Baker King.

Shows WAY worse than Playful kiss:

BAD LOVE: horrible. I thought is would be good since it is on hulu, but it is just horrible. It was so bad I started laughing when people were crying since they cried every 5 minutes. When I could predict the ridiculousness was when I had to let this show go.

ONE FINE DAY: I mean seriously? was this show for real? My husband and I make fun of this show so much. How can a show be so horrible? I tried to watch it because of Gong Yoo, but it was seriously like holding my hand to a fire. I had to stop every now and again because it was so ridiculous. The drunk scene with Gong Yoo on a bride or something was the final blow.

I love to hear you guys worst shows...

I love MGIAG, but SKK Scandal just came out from left field and swept me off my feet. The cast is charming and the storyline gripping- not to mention some of that Enya-ish pieces. And there is that feel-good and "yes we can!!" atmosphere. It's the same feeling I got when I watched and fell in love with City Hall and Nobuta Wo Produce. I feel inspired when I watch it and want to become a noble scholar to create a better world and to live life to the fullest. KIM YOON SHIK, HWAITING! LET'S BUILD A BETTER JOSEON!
