Joo Won (Ojakkyo Brothers) has signed on to take the lead in Gaksital, or Bridal Mask, an upcoming KBS drama based on the 70s manhwa by Heo Young-man. So this is why he dropped the second lead in Moon That Embraces the Sun. Guess you can’t blame a guy for wanting to play a hero.
Gaksital is a famous manhwa set in the 1930s, during the Japanese occupation. The hero, Lee Kang-to, is known as ‘Gaksital’ because he wears a mask to hide his face — one of those traditional play masks, specifically the rosy-cheeked one reserved for the female role, aka the bride. He’s an unassuming young man in real life, but when he dons his superhero mask, he fights injustice and rights wrongs during one of the darkest periods of Korea’s history. The manhwa itself, written in 1974, is described as astoundingly contemporary, and deals with a myriad of social issues, still praised for its nationalistic stance.
The 10-billion won project is planning to be a huge action-adventure blockbuster, and if they manage to pull it off with style, it could very well be this year’s City Hunter. Joo Won’s got some serious charisma as an action hero, and with two ratings hits already under his belt, it looks like he’s going for the kill with his third. I just hope they don’t take this whole mask thing too literally, because WHY WOULD YOU COVER UP THE PRETTY? Writing is Yoo Hyun-mi of My Happy Home and Green Rose, and directing is PD Yoon Sung-shik, of thriller masterpiece Story of a Man.

Re:WR – I did enjoy it more because it was more fast-paced. Saw different sides of LSY & LDW. I know they do great comedy but they were crazy-funny in WR.

I take a scholarly interest in how visible the alleged production budget is in the finished product, and am always curious about how the actors are compensated, given some of the working conditions we’ve read about. That said, this sounds great on paper! The mask reminds me a little of V for Vendetta. Like City Hunter, I’ll bet it only has to be worn when necessary.

Nice. Dunno much about the writer (Green Rose had a decent story but I can’t remember the dialogue being particularly memorable) But the PD is fabulous. Story of a Man was beautifully shot. And Joo Won at this point has only ever done massive hit dramas (Baker King was his debut role, I think) so may his lucky streak continue. Imma look forward to this one!

I have fallen in love with him from watching snippets of Okjakkyo Brothers, he is so charming! Please main lead actress be someone I like and not an idol.. nothing against idols cos I do love kpop but I’m getting sick of them getting lots of drama roles when there are countless rookies actors/actresses waiting for their big hit.

Tips for you.. Watch episode 15 – 24 for the blossom relationships between Joo Won (Tae Hee) and Uee (Ja Eun).
From episode 25 – 32 for the angst, tension and jealousy between those two.
And.. episode 33 – 44 for their cute romantic awkward adorable moments

No, one can never talk too much about OB. This is one drama that doesn’t feel draggy at all. Yes, Carinne, you should spare time to watch it. I almost died when he sang in ep 44….he’s a musical actor, which explains his lovely singing voice.
