48th Baeksang Arts Awards

Baeksang Awards!

This springtime award show has the distinction of honoring both film and television, sort of like the Golden Globes, and has been running for nearly half a century, since 1965. Since it’s not a broadcast station award (where you have a broadcaster giving awards to its own shows) but awards across stations, winning a Baeksang carries a bit more weight than those year-enders.

Still, in the end, Baeksangs are still something of a popularity game, more likely to hand out honors to hit shows than based on pure critical acclaim—I’m waiting for the day when cable shows get to be part of the mix. That means there are a number of winners I tend to disagree with, and a slew of deserving selections that went overlooked.

Basically, as with any award ceremony: Take results with a grain of salt. Heck, take the whole salt shaker while you’re at it.

Now, on to the fun part.

I think my favorite ceremonies for red carpets are Blue Dragons and Baeksangs; the styles tend to be a little more interesting than the year-enders, where you see lots of similar looks and, for whatever reason, often get a lot of people following a small number of trends.

This year there was lots of springtime color. I LOVE COLOR.

Onward!

Okay, so Gong Hyo-jin—who won top drama honors for Best Love—isn’t in color, but she always wears something a little edgy, and I think she’s rocking the short, structured look. I do wish her she weren’t in such blocky platforms; the dress is cool and hip, but the shoe says Just Another Stripper in the ’90s. I haven’t loved Gong’s recent interview photo shoots, but I love the makeup and hair here.

Gong beat out Su Ae, Kim Hyun-joo, Moon Chae-won, and Kim Sun-ah for the award. I would’ve thought Su Ae or Moon Chae-won might have had the edge over Gong’s more naturalistic acting performance, with their heavyweight dramatic roles, but it’s nice to see Best Love get some props.

Kim Soo-hyun, looking snazzy. I loved his look on first sight—it’s a little quirky, but he’s working the confidence and the edgy hairstyle. I do love you, Kim Soo-hyun, but I’m a little befuddled as to how you won top acting honors for The Moon That Embraces the Sun OVER Han Seok-kyu (Tree) and Shin Ha-kyun (Brain). I can understand beating out Park Shi-hoo and Cha Seung-won, given Moon’s monster ratings, but Han and Shin? Whaaa?

Love love love love love.

Love.

Uee (Ojakkyo Brothers) has been acing all her red carpets in the last year, and she has another adorable, fresh look for this one, where she picked up a New Actress Award. The shoes are great, as are the accessories and her hair. Did I mention I love this?

Uee’s co-star Joo-won (Ojakkyo Brothers) also took home an award. I love his look much less, as in, not much at all. He looks like he’s going to the opera in mid-December, and maybe Grandpa dressed him. Then again, he’s adorable enough to get away with it. He arrives with Uhm Jung-hwa and Kim Yoon-seok; below, Uhm also poses with her award and Ahn Sung-ki. Those two were the big winners on the film side with her upbeat comedy Dancing Queen and his intense based-on-a-true-story Unbowed.

Suzy has been wearing a lot of short white dresses to these kinds of events, so I wouldn’t mind seeing her try a new look now. But I suppose she’s playing to her “young innocence” image, so why not enjoy it while it’s hot? She picked up a newcomer award for Introduction to Architecture, playing the first-love object of Lee Je-hoon’s affections.

Um. I can’t decide how I feel about this. On one hand, Kang So-ra (Dream High 2) is wearing a pretty vibrant color, and the cut of the dress is flattering. On the other hand, it’s electric-blue animal print; suddenly the fresh young thing sort of looks like she’s channeling cougar mom at the cabana, and now I can’t stop singing, Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl…

Yoo Inna (Queen In-hyun’s Man) wears blue too, but her gown is more in the princess category.

Does this mean that Jung Kyeo-woon‘s (History of the Salaryman) surfer transformation wasn’t real? I kind of dug the blond hair on him, though the man certainly never looks bad suited up.

Han Hyo-joo‘s (Dong Yi) gown looks beige in some photos, and pinkish in others. I don’t love the shade, because it nudes her out, which then makes the red lip a jarring contrast. The whole color palette is a little sickly, in my eyes, though her shoes are fabulous.

Fashionista Kim Min-hee had a successful movie with Helpless, co-starring Lee Seon-kyun (who had a zillion movies in the past year, it seems), and she’s got a structured white gown on with a huge bow on the side that triggers my childish impulses. I want to pull it. I think she works the pale gown, red lip, and dark hair combo/contrast better than Han.

Park Ha-sun! After High Kick 3, I love this girl—whatever the role requires of her, she commits 100%. Looks like audiences feel the same, since she won an award for the show… in the variety segment. It’s a little strange, though I’m glad she won something for that show. I suppose it’s the closest thing to a comedy category?

Park Shin-hye appears to be in almost the exact same shade of salmon pink as Park Ha-sun. Both dresses look great, but I’m particular to the super-flattering flow and cut of this one. Park picked up a popularity award for You’ve Fallen For Me… which wasn’t very popular, but it’s more about her than the show, isn’t it?

Kim Ah-joong (Sign) emceed the event, and arrives with her co-host, Lee Hwi-jae. This dress seems typical of her style: sleek, simple, modern. I don’t love it, but I don’t hate it either.

I feel like I’ve seen this dusty-rose pink gown before, but it’s sweet on Jung Yumi. The look suits her previous role as Thousand Day Promise’s gentle-hearted doormat better than her current one as a black-hearted opportunist in Rooftop Prince. I suppose the look is appropriate since it’s Promise that earned her a new actress nomination at these awards, though she didn’t win.

Here’s her co-star Yoochun (Rooftop Prince), rockin’ a pompadour. I’m not convinced he’s pulling off the hairstyle 100%, but I so prefer him with his hair brushed back instead of that Bieber hair he always seems to sport in his projects. Why??? The world may never know.

Two is always better than one? Little brother Park Yoo-hwan was also at the awards, having earned a nomination for new actor in Thousand Day Promise. (Big Bro won a popularity award for Miss Ripley.) Too bad Yoobro didn’t win so they’d have a matching set of awards, although if we’re straight-up comparing those performances (a dangerous proposition, I know), I think Yoo-hwan was more impressive. Though I’d have to say the pendulum swings back for their current projects, where hyung’s rocking as the Joseon transplant in Rooftop Prince, while Yoo-hwan plays the haughty idol star in K-Pop Ultimate Survival. (Yes, I’ve watched it, and I find it fluffy and pleasant, but silly in a watered-down You’re Beautiful way.)

It’s not so much that I love this dress, as much as it’s this photo that’s striking. Shin Hyun-bin (Warrior Baek Dong-soo) looks confident, purposeful, and a little bit scary. It’s kind of awesome. Just don’t get in her way; she may trample you.

Aw, how cute. The outfit is a little precious on Kim Yoo-jung (The Moon That Embraces the Sun), who may be a wee bit old to pull off the full-on ankle-ruffles and Mary Janes. It’s like something Kim Sae-ron would have rocked at age 10. It is adorable, though.

Here’s her co-star Yeo Jin-gu, heartthrob-in-the-making. Noonas, prepare to have your hearts stolen in the coming years. Unless it’s already happened. Although, here’s a sobering reminder: He turns fifteen this summer.

Comedian Jung Juri looks like she’s having the time of her life. She beams in every single photo.

Lee Kwang-soo (Running Man), so gangly and adorkable.

Im Soo-hyang (New Gisaeng Story) was up for a newcomer award, and comes wearing a flowy blue number. Yay for color.

Um, no. That’s the first thought that pops to mind when seeing Lee In-hye (Comrades) in her black asymmetrical dress, although individually the components are fine. The slit up one side, the asymmetrical sleeves, wavy tousled hair—sure, all fine. Then you put them together and I’m thinking someone forgot to finish making the rest of the dress.

Oh Seung-hyun (Beauty Island) wears lilac; I like the color more than the gown, though there’s nothing wrong with it.

Oh Nara (Feast of the Gods) has a nude-peach gown on with a mermaid cut. I hate the mermaid cut. On the upside, this one at least looks like it allows her to walk.

I’m in love with this look, worn by Hong Su-ah (I Trusted Men); I may even like it more than Uee’s dress, though it’s a close race. It’s springy and fresh, and from all the photos of the event it looks like the skirt flows like a dream. I’d want to twirl in it all day, maybe in a grassy meadow somewhere, while making daisy chains and nuzzling my pet unicorn. Hey, a girl can dream, and a dress that can make you feel that light and breezy is a winner, I say.

I think it’s also the vaguely hanbok-inspired silhouette that adds interest, replete with that sash hanging from the back. I would wear this to my wedding. Heck, I would have a wedding, so as to be able to wear this dress.

Baeksangs already? Aren't these usually in mid-May? Oh well... I'll just sit back and enjoy the pretty. :)

"Shin Hyun-bin (Warrior Baek Dong-soo) looks confident, purposeful, and a little bit scary. It’s kind of awesome. Just don’t get in her way; she may trample you."

GEESUS!! Why couldn't she show this type of emotion in WBDS?!? (Yes, I'm still bitter. So sue me.)

Kim Soo-hyun, WAE SO GORGEOUS?!! I love that suit!! And Kwang-soo... The Giraffe cleans up real good -- me likey!

Thanks for the recap, JB -- there's about 85% Pure Win on these outfits!

Not liking Kim Soo-hyun's hair...

I usually don't look at the winners at these award ceremonies because as JB said, it's all about popularity. My head will just hurt if I try to figure out why he/she won a particular award.

Love UEE, Suzy, Yoo Inna, & Kim Yoo-jung.
Yeo Jin-gu, I'm reserving you for my future daughter. ;)

Lastly, I want Hong Su-ah's dress too. I think we're the same size. Can I write her to donate it to me? :)

Kim Soo Hyun winning over Han Seok Kyu *and* Shin Ha Kyun is so wrong that I'm kind of embarrassed for him. I think he's very talented and he was great in Moon/Sun, but his winning this year just highlights why there are so many complaints that these awards are based more on popularity than excellence.

As if his win wasn't jaw-dropping enough, the show itself won for best show. If this show had not received monster ratings, I doubt it would have received any nominations at all because it was a train wreck.

I know some are still clinging to the belief that the Baeksang awards are based on excellence, but with results like these that argument gets harder to support.

I am also surprised about Shin Ha-Kyun.
Wow!
KSH has a long way to go before he'll be as amazing as SHK, especially in the role of Dr. Brain. He was unforgettable.

And I am a huge KSH fan, too.

I'm with you all on this one. Shin Ha Kyun's performance in Brain was smashing, truly above all the rest. Incomparable actually. Kim Soo Hyun is a promising actor but not within the same category as SHK at this point. So yes, it is a jaw-dropping result. But then it also draws into suspect the credibility of the folks who vote on this.

I was there and I was totally disappointed with SHK not winning this award. He portrayed the role Dr Lee Kang Hoon to perfection but Brain was well received in Korea but not online. SHK in fact won the PD award on 5 th March. I'd rather he lose out to HSK.

I think Han Seok-kyu should've been given the top excellence award for his portrayal of King Sejong in Tree with Deep Roots. Although Kim Soo-hyun has a few poignant moments in Moon and Sun (please don't get me wrong, I like KSH too!), I still think that Han Seok-kyu deserve the award more.

I agree with you. I love KSH and he's a fine actor but half the reason why I watched TWDR was to see Han Seok Kyu. I'm so glad this show got the Daesang. Good call, Korea.

I love Yoo Inna's dress but my favorite look is Uee. She just looks so fresh, spring-y and vibrant. I probably wouldn't be able to pull off that look but it looks fabulous on her.

I couldn't agree more.
MONTHS after, I still vividly remember his performance, and how he superbly portrayed King Sejong.

Because of him, I now have a totally hopeless crush on that king. Though I could make it happen, what's with all this time-travel trend....

Is it because MoonSunCastleInTheSky was suge a hit? Because it's more recent? Because KHS is such a heart-throb? I don't know, but I can hear the award screaming "My master ain't ya".

On a side note, I LOVE UEE's look from head to toe. Hong comes close, but lacks the "it" factor.
This carpet thing sure is a good promotion stunt for designers...

Seriously, how can they put KSH in the same category as Han Suk-kyu and Shin Ha Kyun, and even beat KSK and SHK? I don't dislike KSH but this choice is apparently based on popularity and ratings.
HSK gave one of the most mesmerizing and mind-blowing performance in the history of Kdrama. After HSK's Sejong, it is difficult to even watch anyone else playing king. Honestly, I found HSK incredibly adokable because he makes Sejong human and close to life. And Shin Ha Kyun is brilliant in Brain too.
But I am glad that Uhm Jung Hua got the best actress. Next time, I hope it's Uhm Tae Woong's turn! Both of them are talented to boot and incredibly personable.

I love Kim Soo Hyun, but I'm thinking Shin Ha Kyun got robbed. The man was AMAZING in Brain - he pretty much made that drama! And here I thought it'd come down to either Shin Ha Kyun and Han Suk Hyu... I mean, this IS a "Best Actor" award, and as good as Kim Soo Hyun is, I'd give him at least another couple of years before he can even dream of matching those two. Talk about clearly letting a drama's popularity cloud decisions, eek. Ah, well.

I'm soooo happy there are so many Shin Ha Kyun/Brain fans here!! I found out about Shin Ha Kyun when I watched Harvest Villa, but I didn’t become a crazy fan until after I watched Brain. He was an absolute genius at portraying Dr. Lee Kang Hoon. A huge part of what made Brain so insanely addicting was the in-depth study of the main characters' psychologies and their complex relationships with one another, and Dr. Lee Kang Hoon was the most fascinating, intense character. Only Shin Ha Kyun could have made that character so memorable. Brain's script was heavily flawed, but you're right, everyone was watching that drama just for SHIN HA KYUN <333!!!!

BTW, you can more info about him on the SHK's International Fans fb page.

My favourite look? Uee's. It's fresh and young and pretty and sort of effortless (okay, it's the kind of 'effortless' that probably takes five hours to create, but still).

My least favourite... Park Shin-hye's. Love the colour of her dress, but hate the shape and the length of it and personally, I don't think her hairstyle is flattering.

LOVE Hong Su-ah's dress, but it does make her look kind of flat chested. Other than that, I love the style of it and the colours, and her hair and make-up are spot-on.

Whee, awards (photos) are such fun. :)

Is it rating over quality?

you and me both JB! I always dreamed of having a hanbok-inspired wedding dress, and I'm inlove with Hong Su-ah's dress. It's so pretty!! It's perfect for the season with all those flowers and it's flowy. It's a hippie-dream-dress! but I'm not loving the shoes, though.

Shin Hyun-bin's first photo was amazing! It was the first photo that made me look twice. I'm not really a fan of her, but the shot is incredible it made her appear very warrior-like. kudos to the photographer!

Kang Sora looks mighty-fine but the print has got to go. I feel that she would've look smashing without it.

I also adore Park Shin-ye's look that suits her really sweet and fresh image. She's one of the young stars with a clean image so the cut and color matches her.

Kim Yoo-jung is another sweet girl. She looks like she's going to the church but that made me like it more. I'm glad that she's not one of those young stars who wants to dress sexy to make themselves look older. and she pulls of the 10 year old outifit with her sweet face.

and I really like the breeze that was present on the red carpet because it made the whole thing photo-shoot ready.

Yeo Jin Gu is soooo cuuuute. And I also like Kwang Soo's suit and Kyeo Won's :D (I see them ankles peaking and I like it lol)

And Uee's fishtail is soo pretty. I'm never a big fan of her dresses, just because she's much girlier than I am, but she makes them look so great because of her smile.

And Gong Hyo Jin forever my idol <3

Kang Sora look so great (I don't understand why I like her, hehe) & I am really happy for her to get her award from "Sunny" ~ YAY!!

CONGRATS to ALL actors & actresses who won their awards!! DO your BEST ~ Hwaiting! \^o^/

Wow, Hong Su-ah and Uee were gorgeous. :) I wonder where Jung Il-woo and Ha Ga-in are? I mean, their Moon/Sun costars also arrived...Oh well. :) I want Su-ah and Uee's dresses...I'd wear them all day and refuse to take them off. Yep.

Can anyone enlighten me why that this year's Grand Prizes (Daesang) were given to a drama & movie, not to individual actor? Did they change the rule?

Because I remember Hyun Bin (TV Drama) & Lee Byung Hun (Movie) won Daesang last year.

Not complaining though because I'm really pleased that TWDR won Grand Prize, it's a really great drama and well-deserved winner.

I was surprised that KSH won Top Excellence Actor, no doubt his acting is good; but if we compare him with Shin Ha-kyun & Han Seok-kyu, I'm sorry KHS' fans, his acting is still not at SHK's & HSK's level.

And TMTETS won best drama? So yes I can now conclude that this award is based on popularity / rating.

i bet you anything that within a few days, the Korean media will be buzzing about the 'controversy' over the Best TV Actor award. seriously, who did MBC bribe?
it still amazes me how in S.Korea, there isn't a concrete, prestigious award show for music, TV, and movies. S.Korea is a rising leader in the TV and music scene, yet the way they hand out awards is totally archaic.
i like some of the dresses, but i always feel like it isn't on par with Hollywood's dresses. that statement is unfair since Hollywood actresses have more money and clout than S.Korean actresses.

I don't think there will be any controversy. The media seems to love their Moon/Sun a lot because the readers loved it too.

Uee for the Best Dressed win! Fresh, flirty and girly - absolutely adorable.

Park Shin-hye gown just didn't cut it for me - it looks like a fugly blouse attached to a massive skirt.

This is the first time Kang Sora has taken a small misstep for a Red Carpet. She's always edgy and stylish, but the animal print just didn't cut it and her hair looked messy.

The Yoochun bros - well, hubba, hubba. That's all.

Liked Hong Su-ah's gown but am not a fan of attached appliques crawling up her shoulder. Otherwise, delightful.

I really wish there was a pic of Su-Ae (if she attended) - her dresses are usually kick-ass for Red Carpet events.

JB, I completely agree with you. KSH did not deserve for the Best Actor. Han Huk Kyu would deserve it.

I was disappointed for this time. TMETS won Best drama for popularity/rating. It has too many mistake in this drama.

In next days, there will be controversy about Best Actor. Let's look.

As expected, popularity still holds a lot of sway.

Popularity or not, how the heck did "You're My Pet" win any award for its cast?

TMTETS was a good drama... for the eps when the cast was played by the child/young adult counterparts but then fell apart, so once again popularity reigns.

And really, how the heck did Han Seok-kyu NOT win the award for best actor? His portrayal of Sejong still sends shivers up my spine.

Kim Soo-hyun - really? The teen actors Kim Yoo-jung and Yeo Jin-gu were more deserving of acting awards from TMTETS.

Park Ha sun takes the cake for having the best look (hair and dress); like Jung Yumi but she needs to have a talk w/ her hair stylist.

The Moon that Embraces the Sun is the second best drama of 2011?? Face palm. And I definitely think the best actor award should have been given to Han Seok Kyu, or Shin Ha Kyun. Kim Soo Hyun did a really good job portraying raw emotions, but he doesn't have that creativity, genius, and mastery of the craft that Han Seok Kyu and Shin Ha Kyun have.

My favorite red carpet looks:

Gong Hyojin: I like her hybrid block/platform heels. It's architectural and minimal, which tallies with her structured, modern dress. Unique platforms/sculpted wedges have been a runway trend since like 2008 and chunky block heels are a current Spring 2012 trend. Granted, I wish it was made out of a different material and had a cuff, rather than a strap, because it DOES look rather reminiscent of those 90s platform shoes.

Im Soohyang: Her dress was gauzy, sparkly, and princessy, yet it manages to be elegant and minimal. I love the slim form of the dress. Bonus points for choosing the right shade of periwinkle, not too pale, not too dark.

Kim Ahjoong: Her dress is an upgraded version of retro glam with the dual texture and sleek form. I like the gold belt and the fit of the dress~~

I liked the color of Park Hasun's dress (it complements her skin tone perfectly), but I disliked the frumpy front of it.

And insert totally random thought here: Han Hyo Joo is as flat as washboard, but I like that she's not wearing any padding. She's proud and confident of the way her body naturally is~~

omg i love shin hyun bin's look....
i was mulling this over but after watching her in baek dong soo, i think she didn't have good chemistry with him but would have better chemistry with someone like lee seo jin.......totally random yet i think they'd work so well. does anyone else think so, if they think about it? xD

I find it so freaking funny how they also try to display newborn kisses in dramas but yet vagina length dresses/skirt is totally acceptable.

I love Jung kyeo woon but I hate when tall man wear high water! I hate when short man wear high water!

Kim Yoo-jung looks really cute

Yeo Jin-gu- is the only guy that looks just as handsome in theses pic as he does in drama. He has such a beautiful complexion it not that pale white, if only he was 10 years older because you could not paid me to be a teenager again.

Uee definitely had the best look of the night, though I'm worried about her skinnyness in the picture.

as for the awards, I'm surprised about the drama top excellence winners. Gong Hyo Jin and Kim soo Hyun were great this year, but the other candidates are more appropriate.

I love that Park Shin Hye is wearing more color, but i hate that she always wears long dresses at all the awards she goes to... And if i think about it she looks better with short hair, in HS she looked lovely...

The one i miss here is JGS...he is always fun to watch.. how i wish you had included him u.u.

:) It's always fun to watch these award recaps ...thnx

I like Park Shin Hye the most.

If a person is knock-kneed or bow legged they must never wear a short dress - that includes celebrities. No matter how expensive the dress is or how beautiful a person is or how multi-awarded she might be, its unacceptable.

Also, I noticed that several pop stars are slurping their saliva during their extemporaneous speeches. its disgusting, like slurping a soup. But since its not an eating award - definitely saliva.

And there are those whose smiles are constrained.

But, the award ceremony looks disorganized. There must always be a dress code for the audience, the media, the camera men. It lacks etiquette. The dress code must be like that when you watch a broadway musical or a ballet.

Including the host and hostess of the awards ceremony, slurping his saliva.

Its bad manners to do that.

I watch TMTETS and 4 other drama.... Have you seen Cha Seung won in Best Love, Han Suk yu in Tree With Deep Roots, Shin Ha gyun in Brain and Park Shi hoo in TPM ? KSH might be good but not the best compare with other nominees. I lost my appetite for Korean drama right now because of the baeksang judges doesn't know how to appreciate their actors. So disappointed.....

I usually don't take awards show seriously, but i've always had some respect for the Baeksang Awards. This year, however, they've just lost some bit of credibility.

You are so right, sadly!

I thought these awards were better than the networks since they are to say "Thanks!" to the geese that lay the golden ratings, but, wow! I am stunned.
I weep at the potential that MEtS wasted with their actors.
