Descended From the Sun to air three special broadcasts

With Descended From the Sun as wildly popular as it is, it’s no wonder KBS is planning a rather extended special broadcast to cap off its run, with three episodes to air the week after the finale.

The drama will wrap on its 16th episode as planned, which airs on Thursday, April 14. The following week, KBS will air highlights on April 20 and 21, and finish off with making-of clips and an epilogue on Friday, April 22.

I suppose this is one downside of producing a drama entirely before it airs: You can’t tack on more episodes in a bid to draw out the success when the show becomes a ratings juggernaut that dominates its run. For fans, that’s almost always a good thing, since extensions rarely improve a drama’s story or flow, but it’s an easy way for broadcasters to milk a little extra revenue out of their hot property. Can’t you just hear execs gnashing their teeth that an extension is out of their reach? Well, KBS can wipe those tears away with their piles of money, I’m sure.

This means Master: God of Noodles will be pushed a week, premiering instead on Wednesday, April 27.

Of course! KBS won't easily let go their money banks. Not for now. Esp as DOTS hits homerun ratings, wildly popular at national and international level.

Speaking of which, even BBC had an article about it!

Just show you how much it becomes popular across Asia (and probably other continents).

It also cautioned citizens against imitating the more melodramatic aspects of K-dramas, such as "forcibly kissing women" and slapping one another during lovers' tiffs." This sort of behaviour may seem romantic, but this kind of romance is not acceptable to everyone... it becomes wrong when you justify criminal behaviour as romance," it said.

Read this in the article you provided the link for and thought of javabeans. Seems like China's public security ministry totally agrees with her. I have not watched descendant yet(usually watch dramas after they finish their run cause I hate waiting for the next week to come. It can be stressful ok! :-D ) but seriously hope it is free of such things.

I sent that article to my friends and highlighted how i loved the caution statements. I mean there are dummies in the world who think this might be the way to woo a woman. Media influences us in so many ways, and ideas/expectation of dating/falling in love certainly are influenced via TV/movies. I saw either an article or a YouTube thing about how Indian male behaviors reflect what movies from the Bollywood movies from the 90s showed in regards to pursuing a woman. The idea of "she is just playing hard to get, keep stalking her" are rife.

Not to say DoTS gives me negative relationship vibes. They seem healthy (even though unrealistic!) compared to some other co-dependant relationships depicted in KDramas.

haha, realistic does not seem to be the goal of many rom coms my friend ;-)
I know much too well about the idea of “she is just playing hard to get" which induces the "keep stalking her” attitude and creates a lack of understanding in "no seriously means NO". But the sad thing (IMO) is that the ones who woo women are not the only dummies, women can be pretty dumb too. Case in point, I was discussing a drama with someone and she actually felt pretty giddy and was swooning about a forced kiss scene that I felt uneasy about. I think she said something in the line of "It was pretty romantic and the hero seemed were manly" and I could not do much else than try to manage my dropped jaw. Lol, I guess??!! Guess in the end it all boils down to preference and everyone has their own; even if I find them weird.

0

Oh, and am really glad DoTS does not give negative relationship vibes cause I really want to watch it.

Lord how wonderful-not. I'd rather not watch highlights from the eyes of the broadcaster-as much as I love KBS Korean broadcasting companies do have rather warped ideas of what the viewers want.

Epilogue and making-of clips? OUTTA MY WAY GRABBY HANDS!!!!

Highlights, not so much, but that's because the editing makes you feel like you're watching CliffsNotes. If they put in more care and love, and in this case, they actually have the time to do so, the end result could be rather decent.

It's actually a good idea, since they can aired those episodeas special highlight in many occasion.
and it's good for audience that feels they can't connect to DoTS or feel it doesn't has any plot whatsoever, this is just 4 hours if you curious about DoTS, also for people who think DoTS is overrated or overexposed or guilty for being too popular, I mean people that get turn off by how popular DoTS is right now,
this is a good recommendation, a super short version of DoTS.
so people who want to have a good watch 4 hours may satisfied with this, the fans ofc gonna like it,

I just hope it edited good,
btw why not director cut of many 2nd couple, I heard they cut their kissing scene a lot, they can aired that too,

I'm sorry for people who dislike this drama but I for one am just truly elated!!! Can't wait to see how they filmed this, especially footage from Greece. I also want to see NGs and the good stuff behind the scenes. For me, these things give closure as fan. Just like how the specials for Misaeng and Reply 1988 did :)

Yes. Funny though, I keep seeing (not only on here) lots of people harping about how corny/cringey/plotless it *seems* and yet they haven't even tried watching. Maybe they're scared they might catch the (Dots) syndrome lol. Also, I appreciate great, intense dramas (as Misaeng, Signal & SFD are my top faves) but I also appreciate the different kind of storytelling and easy watchability of DotS. As I often say, respect is key. If you're not happy with a certain drama, let it go. And don't like down on others just coz you think your opinions are superior to them.

I also somehow keep stumbling into Signal and DoTS in same sentence, I presume it because the site NB translate an article about DoTS and the comment is filled with Signal craze.

Idk if they all watched Signal cause that mean it is so popular or they just want to bring DoTS down because they don't like the popularity, but the real question for me is like yours.

Do they even watched it past 2 ep? or just making comment out of bit of news pieces, highlighted moment and read recaps here and there?
I read one commenter said
"why bother watching mystery and heart tugging situation when real life is already hard?" that's a legit reason for me, not everyone need hard core mystery to enjoy a show,
at least they agree that DoTS is popular

I don't think there is a reason for anyone to dislike or hate a great drama like this, I mean it a story about two matured people.
You can feel their maturity and honesty with each other, what more do you need in a romance drama than this?
After I started watching this drama have been more honest with my self and others around me, I really hope some people will cast aside their jealousy and really learn from this drama, hope I didn't say too much lol...

0

Yeah, it's crazy how everyone reacts so differently to things! Like I was cringing so hard at the lipstick line and everyone in the recap comments found it really hot. The whole time I was just thinking really he carried flags to mark out a land mines but not a marker? That's so contrived. But hey, different strokes for different folks. :)

haha i on the other hand, do not really find the cheesy lines cringey, they were quite funny and entertaining lol.. but i cringed super hard at the supposedly tense or "action scenes", like the scene where the 2 leads were saving Fatima from those bad guys with guns.. don't know whether it is the lines, the direction or the general BAD acting (?) of the foreign actors, but it was so... ??? that i can't help but laugh when it's not supposed to be funny.. can't help but feel that the director is good with romatic tension.. but those sort of excitement or tension buildup in action scenes is quite lacking............ or it could be those inexperienced "actors" fault.. lol

0

Worst overrated drama ever, i am slowly loosing faith in dramaland, when people likes things like that, only because the leads are good looking, the story is bad and cheesy. The funny thing is that the girls who like this drama thinks that this is a masterpiece and the best drama ever.

Some Korean Masterpieces:
Signal (Drama)
Misaeng (Drama)
Cruel City (Drama)
Oldboy (Movie)
A Tale of Two Sisters (Movie)
Vengeance Trilogy (Movie)
The Man From Nowhere (Movie)
The Chaser (Movie)
I Saw The Devil (Movie)
And Many More....

Turn down the misogyny a bit there tiger.

I haven't watched this because I want to wait until it ends so I can marathon it. I'm sure it's crack-tastic as people raved about, and I'm sure it won't be as good as Signal (that is just on another level, and different genre?) but hey, popular romantics/ romcoms or big budget (and earning) superhero movies dont win Oscars too, right?

Here's to hoping that DOTS will be better than Heirs or BoF.

oh right, it wasn't Oscar worthy, this wasn't a masterpiece,
at least it fits broader age when people can watch with relaxed feeling, leisurely believe in humanity, not questioning the world unfairness, feel fresh after the real life nightmare, have nice people in it doing their nice job, have character that more people can relate to the basic level, not having headache to think about bad guy, unraveling shocking mystery and just move on the goodness in life,
the story wasn't bad imo, wasn't masterpiece either,

Signal is great but for people that familiar with western cinema, it feels familiar, still great but familiar and good procedural with heart,

and maybe DoTS can fit to the Many More category . . .

*again I don't think it's overrated, you barely said people sad DoTS is a masterpiece, lots of people said it's enjoyable and why I keep seeing Signal and DoTS name everywhere, oh maybe because the same year . . .

And I suppose that many of the 'masterpieces' you listed were only highly rated because so many men watched them. Because girls couldn't possibly understand/recognise a true masterpiece, right?

Many, many, many shows with good-looking leads have done extremely poorly (as have shows with cheesy plots, I might add).
Just because you don't understand why people like this drama, please don't attribute it's popularity simply to good looking leads. And please don't insult the many viewers who are enjoying this drama (particularly readers of DB) by implying they don't have brains enough to spot flaws in a show.

I don't get the hype either with this show, but I don't believe it's a sign that dramaland is on a downhill trajectory story wise. In fact, some dramas are getting better at it. The mastperpice dramas you mentioned, Signal and Misaeng, would not have been produced in the 90s or even five years ago. Six Flying Dragons would not be what it is, if the writers were not influenced by Game of Thrones.

Even some of the rom-coms are getting better. You would not have characters like Hogu in Hogu's Love, Jung in CITT, or Chef in Oh My Ghostess few years ago. Actresses are getting picky in choosing roles. Park Bo Young, Kim Go Eun, Go Ah Sung, and the actress from Signal would not be in dramas if the characters they portray will be damsel in distress.

Cable channels make a few of these possible, and I'm glad they are ramping up their dramas. The big 3 still has a long way to go. They do try to take risks from time to time.

I very much agree with your take on Signal and Misaeng. I don't care much for Game of Thrones but the historical part of SFD kept me watching till the end. There was something there for everyone.

I love all of those picky actresses that you mentioned. Park Bo Young, Kim Go Eun, Go Ah Sung. I'm hardly disappointed with their choices so they are all on auto follow. The chance of them leading me to good drama/movie is pretty high. I've enjoyed most of their work.

This show has some really cheesy moments (cringe worthy level) and the main female actress is not great. She's good, but not great. I don't see a lot of chemistry from her..its all from SJK, who is doing a really great job. I watch because it is a different story line. Interesting and unique. There isn't an urgency to watch it though. Not like others....I loved OMV, CITT, Signal and IOTL because they were different and well written. Great chemistry had me begging for new episodes. They also proved what great acting can do for a story line and not necessarily just a pretty pouty face.

OMV- Oh My Venus
CITT- Cheese in The Trap
IOTL- Its Okay Thats Love

I think it boils down to different strokes for different people. I hesitated going in to watch DoTS, because of the hype. Did watch it eventually after it aired ep 6. Watched 3 eps, then stopped for a week before watching ep 4. Surprised that though I liked the drama, I did not feel the urge to continue watching the other eps.

I like the chemistry between the leads and SJK is amazing - how he can look prettier than KES and STILL be so manly and macho. And the way he looks at her, just gives me the tingles. I even like the second leads' relationship and I'm rooting for them to be happy together. Hence, I'm surprised that I don't eagerly wait for each ep to air. Somehow, the show hasn't gotten a hold on me.

Maybe for me, I think it's the plot. The main storyline is whether the leads and second leads end up together. I don't feel that there is a deeper plot that grips me, that makes me want to know more or/and how it will happen. It's basically a 'feel good' drama.

Don't understand why you have to be so judgmental

"Girls" who likes this drama doesn't think this drama is a masterpiece. Maybe a few but definitely not all.

I for one is a girl to loves BOTH dots & signal.

Loving a crack drama and recognizing what it is doesn't hinder my enjoyment of it. As a matter of fact me and my group of girlfriends who loved it all agree that we turn off our brain while watching. It is a fluff-romance-human drama that simply meant to make u feel good and enjoy the awesome cinematography. What on earth is so wrong about that type of drama?

Signal is awesome!!! I completely agree and totally agree with you!

But seriously you are basically complaining why blockbuster movie earns more money and are much more famous than Oscar movie.

Just stop.

I'm not against DOTS and yeah I am watching it but I'm not getting that so called DOTS Syndrome and I don't know why Song Joong Ki is handsome but the story and acting are just so-so.. I'll better watch COME BACK AHJUSSI and GOODBYE MR. BLACK.. I can't see any chemistry between the SONGS instead I'm more interested on the second lead's love story. I'm sorry but i've been a korean drama addict for 10 years so sorry I'm not getting the hype for this drama... I know many people will bash because I don't like it but what can you do it's my opinion... I like Song Joongki I even went to his fanmeeting before it's just that the story is just a so-so but bec of great visuals it became overrated. Sorry! off to watch some better drama that is currently airing.... Enjoy your DOTS syndrome..

I haven't watched the drama so I have no right to judge it. But aren't we free to like what we want to like. Saying it's a masterpiece or the best drama ever might be too much(comments like these, I haven't seen much). But most times, I think, people say best drama when they mean favorite drama. That or it's the best they've watched. Thing is, it's a matter of preference. Not every drama needs to be a masterpiece. Most of the audience aren't really looking for those. Most times, they watch it to relieve stress.

Take a look at your list; it's true that there are masterpieces (Oldboy, The guy from nowhere) but they are all action/horror/thriller dramas. Where are all the rom-com and melodrama masterpieces? Because I assure you, South Korea has made an art out of them. There may be a lot of thrash, but there are also some true jewels of the romantic genre.

The thing with DotS is that it narrates a love story between mature adults, without the terrible cliches of rich chaebols, dumb poor girls with a heart of gold, horrible mother-in-laws... Girls and women don't behave like that in real life: they behave like Dr.Kang and think a little before falling head over heels with the mysterious and handsome male lead, specially if they have a career as a doctor. It's true that the story in DotS isn't complex, but it isn's a war drama, it's a love story like many other in real life, without amnesia, inheritances, murders, etc. Like thousands of people, I watch it just to see the chemistry between the 2 main leads.

@Norman: I respect your opinion that you do not like the drama. It is not what I would consider a masterpiece but I do enjoy the cinematography and writing. Some of the titles you named are definitely masterpieces that I agree with and love as well. Bubblegum for example had great cinematography, actors/actresses as well as script.

With that said, opinions are subjective and everyone has different standards of what makes a masterpiece. It is only fair that you respect others by not making comments like this where you single out the gender of those who commented on the videos. How do you know that those commenting are not guys? The "girly" nickname was a give away or the gushing over Song Jong Ki? There is no need to point out specifically the "girls" who call this drama a masterpiece; there is no need to point out the gender to get your point across unless you are being misogynistic and implying that only girls would like this show and for reasons you deem unsuitable. "Commentators on video" work just as well if you are simply making a point.

Let's just be a little more sensitive about the words we use.

Lots of stuff occurs but it's mostly just background noise, like a car crash isn't being used as a storyline by the show, it's just filler material. If I was trying to reach for an overching plot, there's nothing beyond a doctor and special forces guy serendipitously meet again while he's on leave- hijinks ensue.

On the other hand Song joong-ki is really hot.

Exactly. There's no overarching plot. And it doesn't help that the bad guys are so cartoonish. There's no meaningful conflict and it's all kind of aimless.

It's a romance. The other stuff is filler for the romance. They meet. Sparks. Torn apart. Meet again. Attraction-Confession-Denial. Conflict. Happ... Conflict. More stuff. The end.

It remains to be seen if "the end" will be happily ever after since S.Koreans love their gut wrenching sad endings; but, the writers other dramas have pulled out the happy at the end, so maybe.

0

When you put it that way, it really doesn't sound that appealing. I haven't watched and I'm hesitating whether I should because it sounds like it lacks a plot. My favorite My Girl has the best romance ever in my opinion but even that has a proper plot as well.

!!! MY GIRL. I loved that drama so much that I probably saw it close to 10 times from front to back.

I thinking Descendants is more of a situational drama. I was hoping for some overarching plot that the show was slowly leading up to with little hints here and there but ah well. Can't have it all.

0

VAL are you me? I've watched all the big kdramas and My Girl is still the best to me imho, a lot of dramas try to be what they're not and fail, or play into lovelines while straying from plot. My Girl was simple, structured, and to the point, and the couple were so genuinely loving and respectful for each other (Plus Yoo Rin is the toughest female lead I've seen in k drama, and not just fake tough or tamed tough, but to the very end she has her own strong but magnetic personality -however frustrating her actions got sometimes ) and then Gong Chan is legit the kindest, most feminist male lead I've seen in k drama.

I remember vaguely that someone did explain this a few threads ago... the title was given as "Descended ..." at first so that was the title that DB used in the first article on it. When the added title or change was 'Descendants ...", DB decided to keep to the one they used originally because it might have been confusing otherwise.

Yes, many dramas are given more than 1 English version of a title, because it is a translated title and was probably translated by more than 1 person at different times.

LOL why does everyone expect that a show or drama has to have deep thought and motifs if it is well received across the board? Or of course the other conclusion is that people loving it must be stupid and pretty close to being lobotomized for enjoying it? And we as a society are crumbling and teetering on the brink of Idiocracy (which is happening but not due to DoTS. Trump is showing us this single handedly. But I digress). As long as its themes aren't negative, I think it should be fine for people to like whatever they like.

Case in point... Avengers.. Or Iron Man 3. I mean Captain America: Winter Soldier was excellent. But Ultron was hideous. Still, it made loads of money and was well received across the world. Sometimes things give people happiness and that is the value of that piece of work.

I personally loved Signal. LOVED in all CAPS. But my love for Signal does not stop me from liking DoTS. I still think I have the prerogative to stare at Song Joong-ki and Jin-goo's faces to my heart's content.

I can totally understand the hype and it's truly deserving of DotS to gain it. I am actually happy for South Korea to get this attention even in the form of entertainment. Kudos to DotS and all involved in it.

I started watching this drama because of all the hype around it and wasn't impressed by the story. I found nothing spectacular or incredible of course that's just my opinion.

I do understand why DoTS is receiving so much hype and I'm happy for the cast and crew behind the show. Even I myself look forward to new episodes each week. I mean how can you resist all the pretty, the cinematography, the cheesy yet entertaining lines? But, at the end of the day, when you actually think about it, there's not a lot going on plot wise. And I think that's okay. The drama was said to be about doctors and soldiers falling in love in a war-torn country and that's exactly what we're seeing. It's certainly not the greatest thing out there story-wise, even far from it actually, but it is entertaining and sometimes that's all you need in a show. I admit I have to turn off a few brain cells while watching but I'm still enjoying it. Like others have said, it is our prerogative to sit and stare at all the pretty things going on even if we're not getting anything intellectual out of it. I am disappointed about there being no clear overarching plot but not enough for me to dislike the drama. Do I like DoTS? Yes. Will I continue to watch it every week til the end? Yes. Will it add it to my list of all-time favorite dramas? No.

Don't really care about highlights and probably won't watch them as I can always re-watch the scenes I liked, although they have a lot of time since the series is already finished so they might create something nice. Regarding the epilogue and the making of the series I am definitely excited about it.

Lol.

EVERY article having to do with DOTS has that "it's the greatest" vs "it's the worst thing ever" argument in the comments, usually accompanied by the "gurls are dum they like DOTS hur" comment. Even the recaps of dramas that have NOTHING to do with DOTS have this argument, started by someone unnecessarily saying "this drama is so much better than DOTS."

It almost makes me miss the Reply fanwars...

Lol, yes! Add to that the "Am I the only one still not watching/liking/getting DotS? They might as well copy-paste their sentences to save them the effort.

My favourite part of this show is jin goo and kim ji won, and apart from some SJK and SHK scenes, I fast forward all the rest.

There's a lot of really 'tense' scenes that have made me laugh out loud

But i guess it was such a gamble to do this drama, so props for them for pulling it off

those people who compared this drama to a Mills&Boon (or its american counterpart Harlequin) book is spot on. and considering they were my guilty pleasure during the olden days it's no wonder i ended up liking it very much despite the lack of coherent plot.. it's promised to be a romance drama set in a war zone backdrop and not the reverse so imo it delivers

Comparison between signal and DOTS is getting a little ridiculous.
I like both dramas. Like Hannibal and Jane The Virgin, two completely different show. but I like both!
I don't want to get home after a hard day at work and watch Signal or Hannibal, where I know I have to pay more attention.
but I like to watch JTV and DOTS, the show makes me relax and laugh. And that's legitimate and no one has the right to question it. Have several forms of entertainment on television, and I may like more than one, as some people only like one. That's fine!
And unlike many comments here, for me, Kdrama only improving in recent years.
And I have no problem with DOTS doesn't have a huge plot.
I'm good on just follow the reaction of thesituation of doctors and soldiers in the war zone. And two people falling in love.
CITT had a great and interesting premise and in the end failed monstrously. Sometimes playing safe is not so bad.
DOTS have something refreshing.

first, I watch this drama because I'm a fan of Song Joong-Ki who patiently waiting for his comeback after his military service. he is a talented actor. he just said a sentence in 'a werewolf boy', but his gaze made me cry. uh oh.
I thought DoTS would be heavy drama because soldier-doctor stuff. yes, their relationship is kinda complicated. their job gave effect to their view of life. it's something that I didn't ever think about in my early 20s. it's a mature thought of relationship wrapped by cheesy jokes.
I love Yoo Si-Jin's jokes. ha.
appreciate writer-nim who make every lively line in this drama. appreciate every single scene in this drama because you can see good cinematography. appreciate the actors too because they convey the character successfully. listen to its OSTs, they didn't in top chart for nothing. in the end, imho, this drama is a well prepared drama which deserve popularity, your tears, laughs and time. I recommend this drama.

Well, i will have to agree with some of these comments. Its all about preference. I couldn't get into any kdrama for the last 4 months and as for DotS, I had no idea what it was about- I just heard the soundtracks last week and thought should check it out and ended up watching 5 episodes in a role! So really, Its just my right kind of drama, not too over dramatic imo and has plenty of other stuff going on. some like that formular, some don't. But i must say, its more fun liking something than hating it.
