Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

We had the suggestion put to us about creating a feature that allows us recappers to talk more regularly about the shows we aren’t personally recapping. It seemed like a good idea to give everyone the chance to weigh in on other shows without creating multiple reviews of the same thing, or waiting till the end of the year to talk about them in the year-end round-up (which gets unwieldy enough as it is).

So we’re trying this new feature out, which we’re calling (aptly!) What We’re Watching, where we’ll weigh in on a weekly basis about what we’re following and share some thoughts on them. Not everybody will join us for every single week, but we’ll be sure to have at least some recappers in each edition. We hope you enjoy!

Currently recapping: Lucky Romance

Oh Hae-young Again: My favorite show of the moment, and the first one in a long while where I’m sad when episodes end because I want more. Haven’t had my heart tugged so consistently by a character in a while, or loved a heroine like I love Hae-young. Eric is fine and all (and I do mean fine), but Seo Hyun-jin is the everything.

Beautiful Gong Shim: I intended to watch this eventually when I had free time, but started it up at midnight one night and had to force myself not to marathon four episodes at once. Delightful and cute in a small-town, small-stakes, big-heart sort of way. Namgoong Min has found his next level, but I’m more surprised by Minah, who’s made the character all her own—independent, grumpy, and resilient.

Mirror of the Witch: Now here’s a fantasy sageuk that feels like a fantasy sageuk. Beautiful, eerie, and tightly crafted. I’m even starting to get over the whole age-gap issue between Yoon Shi-yoon (amazing) and Kim Sae-ron (perfect). I know! It’s like magic.

Neighborhood Lawyer Jo Deul-ho: The show has always been upbeat and feel-good (sometimes so feel-good that it’s to its own detriment). A little simplistic with the legal cases, but a competent, crowd-pleasing fight-for-the-little-guy drama. That said, nobody thought we needed more episodes of this, right? Let’s all thank Park Shin-yang for fighting the good fight and refusing to cave to the extension monster.

Monster: It’s not the show I wanted… but sometimes you need a show to clean your room to, okay? I’m a few weeks behind and it can be pretty silly, but it makes me laugh. Sometimes even intentionally.

Currently recapping: Lucky Romance

Dear My Friends: This is almost too realistic that it’s painful, but I really love Go Hyun-jung in this. She feels like me, and I almost hate how much her crazy relationship with Mom feels vaguely familiar. (Don’t tell my mother!)

Mirror of the Witch: Yoon Shi-yoon is amazing, and he almost even makes the romance work! I love the mythical universe, and the stellar CG and beautiful directing certainly don’t hurt. It’s always a treat to discover a show that can make a fantastical world full of sorcery and curses believable.

Entertainer: I don’t know why I’m still watching this.

Vampire Detective: I forgot I was still watching this. Does the vampire know he’s a vampire yet?

HeadsNo2

Currently recapping: Jackpot

Mirror of the Witch: I haven’t seen a show this well-produced in a while. And I’m not talking Descended From the Sun levels of grandiosity, but rather Mirror’s intricacy and attention to detail. Everything we see is there to serve the story, and the world feels pretty real for a fantasy, helped in no small part by some really amazing set construction. Super impressed so far.

Neighborhood Lawyer Jo Deul-ho: An easy show to watch, filled with characters you can easily root for and against. It’s a small drama with a big heart, and while it may not be one aspiring to greatness, it’s just so darn uplifting that you can’t help but like it anyway. Human dramas aren’t normally my thing, but there’s just something about watching a makeshift family work together to solve problems that gets me every time.

dramallama

Currently recapping: Beautiful Gong Shim

Oh Hae-young Again: Definitely my favorite show at the moment. I love Hae-young, her family, her bike, her honesty, and basically everything. Seo Hyun-jin may think we love Hae-young because she’s pitiful, but she is so much more. Oh, and petty Eric is a nice bonus.

Lucky Romance: It’s a fun watch and I love our leads, though it’s still a little difficult to forget them in their past roles. I may not stay up-to-date with it, but I’ll come back if I need a lighter rom-com that’s sure to be full of Hwang Jung-eum’s tiger-hunting antics.

Dear My Friends: The older cast really shines with their lovable and despicable ways, and I enjoy watching them through the eyes of Go Hyun-jung. She loves them by hating them, never afraid to reciprocate their blunt expressions of fondness. It’s morbid and comical as it deals with the often heartbreaking realities of aging.

Mirror of the Witch: It’s creepy and dark done the right way. Sometimes, it’s too dark (literally), but it’s still so captivating. Kim Sae-ron and Yoon Shi-yoon are perfect for their tragic characters and look beautiful on camera. Bless this director and production team.

LollyPip

Currently recapping: Oh Hae-young Again, Entertainer

Beautiful Gong Shim: This show is so cute it makes my teeth hurt. I love the quirky characters and their strange little friendships. Gong Shim is a perfect little firecracker, while Dan-tae with his man-capris makes me laugh every time he’s on screen. It’s a show that won’t tackle any big issues, but it doesn’t need to, because it’s perfect just as it is.

Dear My Friends: I’m a little behind already, but not because it’s not a wonderful show — it’s because I’m so scared it’s going to break my heart. These ladies with their lovely friendships (and even their battles) were so endearing right off the bat, they’re already making me laugh and cry right along with them.

Mirror of the Witch: I do love a good fantasy sageuk, and Mirror hits all the right notes for me. Earnest hero, damsel in distress, and a witch with the ability to summon something so terrifying I hold my breath whenever it shows up to menace someone. The magic is unique and creative, which makes the story unpredictable and frightening in that good-shivery sort of way.

Jackpot: I’m SO behind, and yet I’m still determined to finish this show. I’m pretty sure it’s 90% due to the brother-princes’ pretty pretty faces.

odilettante

Currently recapping: Dear My Friends

Monster: The show continuously seems confused about what it wants to be, but that’s almost become part of its charm. I never know when it’s going to suddenly veer from spy slapstick comedy to revenge thriller to family melodrama. But my expectations are low — as long as it keeps being reasonably entertaining whilst feeding my Park Ki-woong addiction, I’m happy.

Vampire Detective: Wait, so this show has a vampire? Does he know that? OCN may be disappointing me on the supernatural front, but I know I can always rely on them to give me interesting and stylishly produced crime procedurals. The chemistry between the main trio that keep me coming back each week, though.

Saya

Jackpot: Currently at episode 12, finally let go of hope for a super-badass epic. I actually do enjoy it and it’s (a hair) above mediocre, but I wanted it to, you know… break my heart, make it soar. And for the love of all that is warm and fuzzy, stop withholding the bromance.

Oh Hae-young Again: Eric deserved his beating and Hae-young has the best parents ever. BEST. This show is lighting the dark crevices of my heart that Cheese in the Trap despoiled. The so-real-it-hurts-but-don’t-it-hurt-so-good parts.

Master—God of Noodle: Still loving it, but it’s lately had a way of pitching you into the middle of things with-out any explanation. I finally had everything straight last week — so of course it drops a whole new tangle of intrigue this week. Which is, well, intriguing, but is it getting too convoluted?

Lucky Romance: I’ve only caught the first episode, and am unreasonably excited to see sensory overload get an outing that really feels authentic. But I found it endlessly droll that recovery was sought via broody shower. Fellow aspies take note!

Entertainer: I picked this up again at episode 5 after falling behind, but it was so boring I nearly cried. How do you even mess this up, with (mostly) winsome characters and a (mostly) solid cast? Somebody tell me it gets better.

Seriously best idea ever, makes the wait for the podcast easier to bear :P No, but seriously I really do like this idea. Sometimes I'm rather hesitant to check out a show and getting multiple short reviews/thoughts from several veterans will surely make the decision easier. Sometimes though, I'm just really curious about e.g. what javabeans or girlfriday think of a show that they happen to not be recapping!

Mirror of the witch is the first kdrama crack for the year (at least so far, hopefully it'll stay as good as it is now). I liked Descendant of the Sun but it never rose to the drama addiction level for me. I'm also following Entertainer, which i like but it's not totally working for me especially the romance aspect although I really do adore the family that is the Ddanddara band. Still they could have made the story so much tighter or something? I would have loved more interaction with Jinu for example... dunno it just feels like the drama had the potential to be great or even awesome instead of merely good.

Please let this be a regular thing!!

I've been hesitating on committing to more shows then just OHY and Dear My Friends. I think I will try out MOTW despite my wierdness about the casting just because of Yoon Shi-Yoon.

Howdy all! This is a great idea and I love seeing what the recappers and everyone else is watching.

Okay, my kdrama confession:

I've gone from never having seen or heard of Korean dramas this time last year to now real-time watching 7 (yes SEVEN!) shows.

My three favorites - I'll even watch them when raw (and I don't speak Korean!) and then rewatch them subbed:

Oh Hae Young - Oh my goodness - what's not to love?

Gong Shim - this show makes me freaking laugh out loud. I didn't plan on watching it but my daughter started it and I joined her because I had a minute. First episode later, we were both hooked.

Mirror of the Witch - I think after every episode I say out loud to my empty living room "This show is soooo good!" Gorgeous and dark and I can't wait to see where it goes. I've mostly been a rom-com girl but then I watched Signal and Liar Game and now MoTW. Really loving these different genres.

The other ones I'm watching are Entertainer, Flower in Prison, Dear My Friends, and Lucky Romance.

Unfortunately, time is limited so something has to give...and I think it is going to be Dear My Friends and Flower in Prison. I think I'm going to have to finish them later because I have so many other things I need to be doing instead of just watching dramas...such as cooking, cleaning, paying attention to my children and hubby...you know. (But don't worry - my children are grown)

One comment/request I have for the Recappers in regards to the new rating system - I like having the episodes rated but would also like to see a rating of the overall series (is this already in your plans?). This would help when I go back to decide what to binge watch next. Maybe at the top of the Intro to the final episode or something? Kind of like what you have on your Ratings list (which I consult frequently!)

Anyway, thanks for sharing your obsession with me - I'm enjoying it very much!

Oh yeah - Beautiful Gong Shim!! I've just watched episode 5 raw on DramaCool and laughed so hard I was crying. This show does that consistently to me and I rarely ever laugh out loud in rom-coms. The actors are killing it. SO awesome and hysterical. I can't even imagine how much they must be laughing on set!

JB & GF do give overall ratings to the shows that they finish under the "Ratings" tab. It sometimes takes them awhile to update it, but I've found it helpful when I'm trying to get a sense of what older shows might be worth checking out. I also spent a lot of time checking out their end-of-the-year wrap-ups when I first started watching k-dramas.

THANK YOU. loving this feature. can i request that you guys include a snippet for the shows you guys are recapping as well? i love the snappy sound bites in the drama ratings list and it'd be great to get one as a summary periodically, for those of us who are curious as to how currently airing shows are doing but don't want to venture into a recap for fear of spoilers.

Wow, great feature! I've always wondered what you guys watch besides the recapped series. XD

Loving Mirror of the Witch so far and so happy to see YSY on the small screen again. I'm still watching Entertainer since I like the cast. Debating if I should start OHY Again or Beautiful Gong Shim. I gotta spread out my dramas at times cuz I also watch Chinese and Taiwanese dramas. XD So, I will set aside a to-watch list. Heehee~

Good feature to have. I have always wondered what everyone was watching.

JB summarizes it best why I like OHY. It's OHY- I am mesmerized every time she's on screen. Considering this was a show I intended to dismiss am continually surprised it's so good. It might even end up on my rewatch list in the future if it keeps going the way it is.

Dear My Friends is too painful to even read via recaps. Even the recaps make me tear up. My elderly mother lives alone. And with her feisty personality and living alone- it is painful reading even the recaps. The story sounds great and think will be doing this drama via this website I think.

Lucky Romance. Lucky Romance. Sigh. Maybe I shouldn't have watched Reply 1988 just a couple of months ago. Followed by Youth over Flowers- Africa. I can't get the actor the person out of my head. Just can't get into the story. And he doesn't make me believe he is a miserly neurotic genius. Which is nuts since the actor was so cool in Youth over flowers. Do you think it's because of the writing for the drama? And it's not him?.

Awesome! I'm so glad I found this blog. It helped me find other people's opinions other than my own when I first started out watching K dramas. (I didn't really have anyone to talk or fangirl to about them..) A big Thank You from a closet kdrama watcher loner!

Mirror of the Witch: The most interesting fantasy sageuk since....um. Never watch sageuks much unless they're fantasy really. Historical sageuks are with my Grandpa once in a while. But.....hey! Yoon Shi Yoon! My first Asian celebrity crush since the High Kick days! I missed you!

My Beautiful Gong Shim: Quirky, cute, & fun! The leads are a hoot and the chabeol isn't a jerk! Go figure.

Unlucky Romance: Again, another (kind of) nice chaebol...er genius. Eh. They're always almost always both of those typical drama leads. But Hwang Jung Eum is bringing a lot of depth to this character than most of her roles because now I think she has a legitimate reason to be crazy....and loud! Where's my tiger at?? Anyone? I'm gonna buy a stuffed one as replacement.

Entertainer: ...Yeah, i don't know why I'm still watching this show either. Probably still looking for a chemistry filled romance that isn't there? I think we're all pretty much staying for the band roman--I mean bromance. My brother's are in a band that I help with sometimes so I find it relatable. (I'm the sister of the band so I see bromance on a regular basis lol)

Thanks for listening (reading?) to this kdrama loner! =P

This is such a nice and exciting feature! I figured I'll share what I've been watching these days as well :)

Monster;

I have a HUUUUUUGEE thing for PKW. He's so attractive in a crazy kind of way--if that makes sense? Boy got some serious cray eyes lol. Anyway, akin to odilettante, I'm watching this drama mainly to feed my PKW addiction. Also, I'm seriously ready to see him take on a leading role where he is a GOOD GUY. I mean, I get it, he does bad boy soooooo well but I really don't want this baby to be typecasted :( I also have this soft spot for Sung Yuri from them Snow Queen days (maybe it's cuz I watched it as a kid but this drama remains one of my faves--I hold it close to my heart).

Gong Shim:

This is truly one wacky & hilarious gem. I love, love, loveeeeeeeee NGM in this. I think his character has got to be one of my fav leads in kdramaland in a while. I'm a sucker for quirky characters and it really does help that he doesn't fit the dame old boring mold of most male leads in kdrama. Seriously, in real life, if a guy treated me like how a kdrama male lead would treat the female lead, I'll sock him in the face. I'm too damn old for the push-pull, hot & cold thing--IF YOU LIKE ME, JUST TELL ME. But then again, I'm so forward and blunt I'd probs make a horrible female lead. I got no chill.
PS. Minah is surprisingly endearing in this drama as well. Good for her. I truly do hope they give the sister a different narrative soon, where she's actually a person OF HER OWN RIGHT; rather than just there to serve the one purpose of giving gong shim hell. Above all, I like my characters with depth--I don't care if they're more evil than good, their flaws make them complex. It makes them realistic and that, to me, is way more intriguing than any old candy character will be.

DISCLAIMER: Watching these last two dramas for purely shallow reasons that I may be (or not be) ashamed of.

Lucky Romance:
Watching for my one and only, Jung Pal. 'Nuff said. #teamjungpahtillidie
#parkbogumiloveyoutoo #pleasedontmisunderstandme #ijustlovejungpalabitmorethantaek #firstworldprobs

Cheese in the Trap:
Getting onto this train suuuuper late because I needed PHJ's face in my life. I'm also surprised by SKJ and his acting--he's not bad. I've only ever seen him in Hwajung and in the reality show Roomates where he was both so bad and bland (respectively) that I must have shed a few tears wondering how someone oh so pretty could be both so damn boring and bad at acting. Lol.

I like this idea - it fills the gaps esp wrt to series you're not recapping. Like Beautiful Gong Shim - which is killing me. I stay up late and watch it and try not to laugh too hard so I wake my sleeping husband.

The other show that's doing that to me is Another Oh Hae Yong - I'd just finished my binge watch of Nirvana in Fire and Ode to Joy and now these two shows have filled the gap.

The music in OHY though - and the sound - that needs a special call out. After watching OHY and BGS then going to watch Lucky I feel a definite lowering of the bar. The writing, the music - just not as satisfying.

I have to agree that Mirror of the Witch is beautifully done, but a little on the dark side for my taste - I use it to fill in the gaps while I wait for my current 2 favorite shows!

I watched Monster --always typo to Monstar lol-- but I skipped for some weeks, maybe I will watch it again if it reaches 30 some episode or 50 episode xD sometime I found it fun, but it isn't my typical favorite drama

I tried to watch jackpot first episode and turned it down. I dont really like to watch saeguk, but some actor make exceptions.

And when will entertainer end? I dont have any interest to this drama at all u.u huhuu

Oh Hae Young again makes me addicted to korean drama after two years hiatus.

Everything about it is perfect. The storyline, the writing, the directing, the actors (yeay...for dugeun dugeun chemistry of Eric and Seo Hyun Jin), the cinematography and even OSTs are love.

One of the best drama in 2016 (hopefully, since we still have 10 episodes to go) :)

Current obsession: OH HAE YOUNG AGAIN.

I'm really sad that I don't have anyone to fangirl/spazz with, but thank god for dramabeans with so many awesome dramafans, and comment section. I can confess my love for Seo Hyun Jin, Eric and Yeh Ji Won. my faaaaav. (and it's finally monday tmr!! i'm gonna watch it rawrrrr :>)

Currently watching (not obsessed): Lucky Romance which I think it's not really that funny. Okay myb it's not supposed to, but I don't feel the excitement for next episode at all. Dear My Friends, I kinda watch it on reaaal slow pace, like it has been a week and I haven't finish episode 4.

Considering watching: Beautiful Gong Shim and Mirror of The Witch. I really like Nam Goong Min so I was considering to watch it or not, not really a Yoon Shi Yoon fan or anyone in the dramas so, deciding by amount of love and good reviews, I think I might start soon! And also Signal, I'm a fan of mystery thriller but, I don't know why I didn't start on it when it's on air. haha I guess I'm just lazy. Also thinking about rewatching Healer. I miss my little Chang Wookie, come back korea!!!

Anyway, I watched Jackpot, but quitted by episode 6 and Entertainer by episode 1.

Happy soon-to-be-Monday, for the long awaited episode 9 of Oh Hae Young Foreverrrrr<3

OMG, yes! Mirror of the Witch is LITERALLY DARK. If I have one complaint about the drama, it would be that. I can barely see them in some scenes. It's my favourite drama right now though. Has anyone seen Yoon Shiyoon's greeting to viki fans? Omg, the way he said viki killed me so many times! He's too adorable. ><

You are all making me want to watch Gongshim now. Minah is my pet peeve and this drama might cure me from it.

It's weird how I'm not drawn to watching Lucky Romance.

What I am watching right now :
1) Another Oh Haeyoung : I am really not the best person to comment on this drama because it'll just be full of bias. Well, okay, I am a fan of Shinhwa for a good few years. The story's solid and deserves the praises it got so far, but I am still bitter that Eric is having skinships girls when all of shinhwa should live in solitary forever. Hmph! (See why I can't say a word about this drama? I'm not in my right state of mind)

2) Mirror of the witch : I like everything except Ms. Sae-ron. Well I don't hate her, just...she needs to improve.

3) Five children : I like everything, crazy mothers/mother-in-laws included. This is such a cute drama.

4) Flower in Prison : Sigh, Jin Se-yeon. It's okay, small improvement is still an improvement. But why do I feel that Go Soo is a bit cringey at times too? Especially the latest scene of him asking Jin Se-yeon why she became a spy. I think his tone of voice then was too forced. I like the plot though.

I really have no problem with Se Yeon's acting until i've read comments about her. Sad, I think I got influenced because now I try to judge her in the drama but so far she's doing good for me. :) For Go Soo, sigh, I don't know what to say. I feel uncomfortable/awkward with his acting sometimes. I agree with you on tone of his voice part... v.v But anyway, the plot of the drama is what's getting me through! :)

I love Oh hae young again, but it does bug me that seo Hyun jin is so pretty and she's supposed to be the "plain" one. Like hello, how about me?? The ex returning (thank goodness she's not dying) reminds me of the story with Kim suh ah and Hyun bin. Kim sun ah was more believable as the plain girl, as she didn't wear much make up there. Seo Hyun jin always looks flawless anyway, except maybe messed hair once in a while!

Am encouraged to watch gong shim. Thanks

My current favorite is Oh Hae Young again too! It gave me the same feelings I had while watching Coffee Prince and Marriage Not Dating together all at once. It's as funny as MND and as heartwarming as Coffee Prince. Really love it.

Next is Beautiful Gong Shim. Sometimes I really find it hard to stop myself from freaking out when Nam Goong Min smiles. Hahaha. Mirror of the Witch is also in my list. I haven't watched segeuk in a long time and I like this one too.

I'm going through Entertainer just because I can't bear to drop dramas. Still sticking to it.

I have started watching Lucky Romance too. I don't exactly love the story that much but it has an interesting promise. And of course, I'll be sticking with it for the love of Jung Hwan! <3

Only 2 watching right now are OHYA and "Entertainer."

OHYA has numerous flaws in its writing, but Seo Hyun-jin has turned what would otherwise be a pretty typical and mundane K-drama into something worth watching w/ her powerhouse and winning performance.

Can't say the same for "Entertainer" which has painfully become a paint-by-numbers K-drama where you totally see where the writer wants you to feel a certain emotion, but feel little of anything (such as the scenes w/ the kid).

For all the brouhaha over the 1st couple of eps - they were actually more entertaining when Seok-ho was an overly confident pompous arse.

Have been planning on watching MotW and DMF and it appears that they are better shows (seems like things are still up in the air as to whether LR is worth a watch).

This is really nice, cause I usually don't have time to read all your recaps, but still I wanted to know the general overview of what your thoughts are on them.

I am watching OHY, Mirror of the Witch and GongShim now. And liking them in that order. I was glad that I actually got back to watching a drama after more than 2 weeks not watching anything after DOTS (and even this I had a hard time finishing it off).

I tried several dramas, but non of it stick, not even an entire episode (and 2 weeks watching nothing is a big deal btw, I have never time off with dramas since 2010! at one point I even watched 9 dramas at the same time) so I was a bit scared that my kdrama life was going to an end!

Are any of you watching The Flower In Prison? Enjoying it except for the female lead, Jin Se Yun. Feels like I'm watching a pretty face trying to act. And no chemistry with Ko Soo. Otherwise, it's a fun sageuk.

Neighborhood Lawyer...Love it, mostly because Park Shin Yang is too cool! Different than just a lawyer drama.

Great feature! I love it.

JB, I know what you mean about shows to clean your room to. My sister and I call it "laundry TV." ;D Selections currently include X Files and MacGyver (sadly she's not riding the hallyu).

Fantastic idea. Had been watching Oh Hae Young (which I adore) but this new feature (please keep it!) led me to Beautiful Gong Shim, which I am also loving. Will also try Mirror of the Witch.

Mirror of the Witch is pretty amazing eh?! Yoon Shi Yoon is electric in it. And surprisingly (and thankfully too) his pairing with young Kim Sae Ron works. This is the fantasy saeguk of the year for sure.

Oh Have Young - what a surprise winner of a drama! No traditional rom-com here. Its quirkiness works magic.

I think it is spot on that most of the recap team are glued to these two dramas.

And have I said thanks a million for all your efforts in recapping?

Thanks for all the recaps tho. I heard lots of good things on OHY Again. Will check the recap later~
I'm only watching:
Jackpot - crazy show, in a bad way but i'm still watching it. Why? Have no idea myself
DMF - Too good. makes me cried every.single.episode

I have commented twice on this post but none of them is showing...how strange. I posted a comment first and when I saw that it didn't appear in the comments, I comments again. However, it is still not there, none of them are!

Anyways, I wanted to know if anybody knew anything about gummimochi? Where is she this drama season? Didn't see her recapping anything, is she taking a season off? Anyone?

girlfriday - My Girlfriend is a Gumiho
LollyPip - She's Beautiful

Love that mostly everyone is watching MOTW. It's really holding up so far.

I too am watching Five Children. I haven't watched a weekend drama in years but this one has drawn me back in again. Finally, a main couple that is mature and communicative.
for those watching this drama' Working Mom, Parenting Dad' also showcases another great example of a mature, loving couple trying to survive the social norms.

Y'all are TOO funny about Vampire Detective. That's EXACTLY how I felt (past tense, I had to stop...), I mean, c'mon. These guys must know something about vampires to know that Lee Jun is a vampire!! Why do they not know? Why does HE not know? What's going on? Why is it so slow? Yeah. exactly.
