Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo: Episode 10

Our heroine now has two suitors with two completely different approaches vying for her affections, and with restrictions aplenty, hers doesn’t seem the most enviable position to be in. Despite everyone having something to say in the matter, ultimately the choice is up to Su, even if that means she’ll have to find a way to make her voice heard if she hopes to change her present, much less the future.

EPISODE 10 RECAP

After his “You are mine” speech, So goes in for the kiss, and Su struggles weakly against him. Then, she goes still as a tear runs down her cheek. Only then does So pull away, his eyes intent on her face, her shaking hands.

He stumbles backward, regret over his actions seeping in. Su continues to cry silently until So grabs her by the wrist and pulls her after him. Next thing we see is fourteenth prince Jung spotting the two leaving the palace on horseback.

Jung reports what he saw to Wook, who’s in disbelief that Su would have left the palace in the first place—and with So, for that matter. He loses his temper at the fact that she, a court lady, left the palace, though Jung says that So wouldn’t have been concerned about breaking that most sacred of rules. If anyone’s going to pay, it’ll be Su.

That’s what Jung is worried about the most, and he won’t accept Wook’s order for him to just stay in the palace. He wants to help Wook look for Su, since he knows what would happen to her if she gets caught. Wook apologizes for still thinking of Jung as a child, and accepts his offer to help.

We find the two escapees looking out at the sunrise on horseback, and their conversation can only be heard in voiceover as Su notes that neither of them will be safe now. “Then should we run away?” So’s voice replies. “If you want to, I will.”

On their feet now, So explains that he had been wanting to bring her here. She looks up at him as he offers a small smile in return, but her gaze returns to the rolling waves. He asks her if she still wants him to leave the palace, claiming that he’s never brought misfortune or used his sword without caring for the costs.

Only now does Su try to convince herself that the visions she saw of So as King Gwangjong must have been a hallucination, and even if they weren’t, she should still try to stop him. When she speaks, she gives him platitudes about living life with a smile (and without spilling blood) no matter where he ends up living.

So says she needs to just say the word and he’ll run away with her, but Su insists that as a court lady, she can’t leave the palace. But the real reason is much more complicated: “I have feelings for another.” So: “Baek-ah?” Hah. Okay, he really is clueless.

When she says it isn’t, So says it’s fine as long as it’s not Baek-ah. Because he’d have to kill whoever it is she does have feelings for, and he likes Baek-ah. “You already belonged to me the day Yeonhwa was beating you and I called you mine,” he adds. “You saw me for who I was. There was no need for explanations or excuses.”

As far as her being afraid of him, he says he doesn’t believe it. “You are the only one on my side. Therefore, I am not sorry for anything. Not for kissing you, or for bringing you out here.” He adds that he won’t be sorry even if he makes threats against her for having feelings for another man, and hands her a hairpin.

Su shakes her head as she looks down at the gift, insisting that she’d only meant to help him, and that she never intended for him to have feelings for her. “Try running away from me then,” he says with a smile. Putting the hairpin in her hands, he tells her she can throw it away if she so chooses.

Wook and Jung see them on the road and promptly dismount, with Su worrying that her absence from the palace has already been noted. Wook looks positively livid as So makes it so that Jung can’t escort Su off the horse. He’ll be the one to return her to the palace.

At least Wook has enough sense to tell him that people will start to talk if they return to the palace together, but So counters that the king already gave Su to him. “Gave her to you?” Wook repeats the words, clearly not liking the taste of them in his mouth.

But then Su inexplicably says that she’ll go back to the palace with So, leaving Wook and Jung with no other options. I wonder if it’s because So would have to take the responsibility of removing her from the palace rather than the two other princes, but it’s hard to be sure.

Wook makes So promise that nothing will happen to Su on his watch before he lets them set off. “This is the last time I’ll send her away like this,” Wook tells Jung, a dangerous look in his eyes.

So brings Su back to a waiting Court Lady Oh, and immediately takes the blame for removing Su from the palace. Once he leaves, Court Lady Oh blames Su’s small act of kindness as the reason why So’s feelings have gotten out of control, and the only advice she has is for Su to wait for So’s feelings to subside.

Third prince Yo imparts some tips on archery to Wook, who keeps missing the mark. Yo claims that he always imagines a person as the target, and in this case, he’s clearly imagining So as he hits the target time and again. While Wook claims to take the higher road, he keeps missing, and Yo tsks at what he perceives as weakness.

Yo knows that the king is sending him away from the palace to die, but he’s resolved that he’ll come back safe and sound. He plants the seed of doubt in Wook’s mind as to who he should be targeting in the meantime—and Wook, seemingly filled with new resolve, draws his bow and fires. It’s a bullseye.

Su and Wook meet again in the not-so-secret cave beneath the baths, where she tries to explain that she only chose to return with So to be sure that Wook wouldn’t get in trouble. “I am not angry,” Wook assures her. “I am just disappointed.” Oof, that’s always worse.

Wook claims that he was always too busy worrying about the consequences of taking her out of Damiwon, yet while he was agonizing, So took the action that he couldn’t. Now, he says that he’ll request the king’s permission to marry her.

Her eyes widen at this, and Wook explains that he almost lost her to the king—he won’t make the mistake of losing her again. Su was the one who brought joy and laughter back into his life, and because of that, he’s willing to leave the palace to live the rest of his days with her, and give her all the love he never gave Lady Hae.

“Therefore, Su… will you be my wife?” Su’s instantly flooded with conflicting thoughts, as she tells herself that he won’t ever change, nor will he ever hurt her. (Is she using So as a point of comparison?) She would be happy with him. But if Gwangjong were to kill him…

Wook doesn’t get to hear any of this inner monologue, so he’s left to wonder if she no longer wants to be with him. Su says that isn’t so, prompting Wook to ask for an answer: “Will you marry me?”

Before she can answer, Court Lady Oh intervenes to take the two to task for their secret meeting. If word were to get out, Su would be killed, and Wook would be stripped of his rank and punished. Why do I get the feeling that she’s pro-So?

Once they’re alone, Court Lady Oh asks Su to leave the palace with her while she recuperates from her illness. In reality, she’s known about Su and Wook, and wants to remove Su from what she sees as a dangerous situation.

Su disagrees, saying that Wook asked her to marry him, and she wants to say yes. Court Lady Oh’s disapproval couldn’t be any more clear as she mentions that it simply wouldn’t work with So in play—the two brothers would be at each other’s throats, and she’d be in danger.

Again, Su disagrees. She trusts Wook, and knows he’s not the type to change. At this, Court Lady Oh loses her cool as she says that the palace has a way of changing people, and it’s a place where promises mean nothing. Only now does she tell her that the man she once gave her heart to is now the king of Goryeo, and though they were once lovers, the throne was more important to him.

And she, wanting to stay by his side, resolved to live as his court lady. But tears form in her eyes as she tells Su that while she once addressed the king as her lover, now she’s in charge of bathing the women who will actually be his lovers.

Regardless, Su says that she knows she can trust Wook—as long as he has no ambition for the throne, they can be happy. Court Lady Oh can only sigh, having failed to convince her.

After a night spent brooding over the hairpin So gave her, Su finds So waiting outside her quarters. He’s done a less than admirable job covering his scar, so Su invites him inside in order to help. In voiceover, she says that she’s not afraid of him, nor does she hate him. She just worries about him.

As she applies the makeup over his scar, Su tries explaining that there are different types of affection. Naturally, someone feels affection for another who helps them through a difficult time, but they’d be more inclined to call that person a friend. What she worries about, she claims, is that So might be confusing friendly affection for love.

So takes her hand as he tells her that he doesn’t differentiate between friendship and love—it’s all the same to him. He knows that she’s trying to push him away, but her tactics won’t work on him. As he says this, he grabs her around the waist, pulls her close, and begins to lean in for a kiss…

But Su quickly covers her mouth with her hand. Amused, he tells her not to worry, since he won’t try kissing her without her permission again. Thank goodness for small favors.

Jung finds Su on the palace grounds and explains that he was worried about Su when she went off with So, but she says they only went to see the sunrise. It was fun, even.

She tells him to try thinking of things from his brother’s perspective, since he was never able to receive their mother’s love. Jung just says that his mother and Yo have changed since So came into the palace, and sighs wistfully for the uncomplicated nature of the past. The days that Su spent her days smiling at Wook were their happiest, he claims, and Su agrees.

Wook meets with his mother and Princess Yeonhwa to announce his plans to request the king’s permission to marry Su. He doesn’t want the throne and wishes to live with Su in the Northern city of Hwangju. He may as well have slapped Yeonhwa in the face with the way she reacts, with her spitting that he’d just be leaving her and their mother without protection.

Surprisingly, Queen Sinjeong intervenes to give Wook her permission to follow his heart, though she warns him to be prepared. Once he leaves, Yeonhwa tears into her mother for not stopping him, even though the queen reasons that she’s tired of vying for the throne, and knows that Wook must be too.

Without Wook’s protection as king, Yeonhwa says, they’ll just be pushed out of the palace, or worse. That’s when Yeonhwa declares that she no longer intends to just live as the sister of a king—she’ll become the wife of one, and rule over him.

Queen Sinjeong is powerless to stop her as she goes straight to Queen Sinmyeongsunseong with a “story” to share. We don’t get to hear what it is, but this alliance is probably the last thing anyone needed.

Baek-ah’s heard a new dancer has arrived at the gibang, and goes to see the new girl for himself… only to recognize Woo-hee, the sword dancer from the forest. She grows suspicious when she recognizes him, though he claims he just comes to the gibang to play accompaniment for the gisaeng there.

She’s content to just shoo him away, but Baek-ah says that they should share names now that they’ve met three times. She claims her name is Bok-soon, but her attempt at secrecy is foiled when one of the other gisaeng immediately calls out, “Woo-hee-ya!” Hah.

Queen Sinmyeongsunseong and ninth prince Won meet with minister Park Young-gyu in order to ask his advice on how to separate the king from So. Minister Park says that they’ll have to make the king believe that So is Crown Prince Mu’s enemy, so all the queen needs to do is act like she supports So—he’ll handle the rest.

Won then claims he stole one of the crown prince’s secret documents and gave it to So, that way the crown prince will think So stole it. The queen believes all their preparations are going swimmingly.

Baek-ah pays a visit to So to ask him if it’s true that he took Su out of the palace—and if so, he wants to know what his half-brother is thinking. Since Su is a court lady, there could be severe ramifications for her if she’s caught, and Baek-ah doesn’t want So making things any harder on her.

So says that wasn’t his intention, and confesses that he’s not all that good at relating with others. But he has no intention of making things difficult for her, and when he says that, Baek-ah realizes that his feelings for Su are real. So claps a hand on Baek-ah’s shoulder as he says that he and Su are the only people he truly cares about.

They’re interrupted by Astronomer Choi bearing bad news for Crown Prince Mu—his mother’s family has been accused of embezzling tax money, so the ministers are calling for him to be deposed. The ministers instead want So to be installed as the new crown prince, since he’s been the nation’s hero after the rain ritual.

Ninth prince Won plays his part in the plot by claiming that all of this happened because he told So about the dealings of Mu’s unscrupulous uncle, making it seem as though So was the one who made that letter public. He acts completely innocent, leaving Crown Prince Mu to suspect So.

Seeking to nip this problem in the bud, King Taejo informs So that he’ll be sent back to Shinju. Despite the king knowing that Queen Sinmyeongsunseong’s machinations are the reason that So’s name has been put in for the crown prince position, the only viable solution the king can think of is to send So away.

Princess Yeonhwa, in disguise, orders a court lady to deliver a vial of what’s probably poison to a very specific court lady. (Su, perhaps?) Though Yeonhwa warns the woman not to speak a word of this to Queen Sinmyeongsunseong, it seems the court lady does just that.

So bursts into his mother’s room then to demand answers, though his mother only demurs, claiming that she was just trying to help him get the throne. Isn’t that what he said he wanted?

He tells her to stop pretending like she does anything for his sake, but his mother just smiles at him as she tells him that the crown prince will die from drinking poisoned tea on the ninth day of the ninth month—she’s already delivered the poison, so he can’t stop it now.

So begs to differ, but his mother practically laughs. Even if he tells someone that she delivered the poison, she’ll just claim she did it to make her son king.

“Try to stop it if you can,” she challenges. “But you’ll only be tightening the noose around your own neck.” She manages to stop him when she mentions how the king is trying to drive him out, but if the crown prince dies from poison, So will take his place. One measly court lady will die, and he’ll have everything he wants.

Understandably, So is wary of trusting her, though not wary enough. She bats her eyes at him and claims that she fully supports him and trusts him not to kill his brothers. Dramatic music tells us he’s considering her proposition. No, So! Don’t trust that witch!

Minister Park Young-gyu is called to the gibang to meet with Woo-hee, who pressures him about a rebellion. As the last princess of Baekje (one of the Three Kingdoms, which King Taejo unified into Goryeo), she wants to kill the king, and she threatens to tell the people of Baekje of his treachery should he fail to help her.

He reveals that he’s her uncle by marriage, and all but dares her to make him bend to her will. What power does she have? Woo-hee threatens him with her silver dagger, but when they spot Baek-ah nearby, she acts like a gisaeng fighting off a suitor trying to have his way with her. Her uncle plays along and stalks off.

Baek-ah seems to recognize the minister, but before he can connect the dots, he rushes over to ask Woo-hee if she’s okay. Bitterly, she says that if he was going to see what was happening and not rush in to save her, then he should’ve stuck with that choice. He says it didn’t look like she needed his help and dangles the norigae ornament she dropped in front of her, teasing that it doesn’t seem like she wants it back.

After Wook pays a visit to his late wife’s grave to ask her to watch over him and Su, he joins the royal family in an afternoon of games and general merriment (which so happens to take place on the ninth day of the ninth month). So focuses intently on the crown prince every time he seems about to drink.

The family plays a drinking game based around who can recite stanzas from a famous poem by Zhong Hui, and they motion to the next person who must drink and recite the next part of the poem. But when it’s Jung’s turn, he can’t remember it. Hah.

Queen Sinmyeongsunseong notices that Crown Prince Mu is reluctant to take a drink, which opens an opportunity for the poisoned tea to be delivered instead. The one part of the plan So wasn’t let in on, though, was that Su was to be the doomed court lady delivering the poisoned tea.

Tenth prince Eun and his new wife Soon-deok are late to the party, and end up running into Su as she’s on her way to deliver the tea. Eun’s a bit icy to Su, claiming that he doesn’t want to see her face if he can avoid it. After he storms off, Soon-deok asks Su why she didn’t just take her offer to become Eun’s second wife.

Su admires Soon-deok’s consideration for her husband, and bids her to take care of her husband. Soon-deok gets a little offended at Su’s specific advice, claiming that Eun is her responsibility now.

The tea Su brings to the crown prince is first tested for poison by a silver spoon, but before it arrives, So loses his nerve and prepares to tell the crown prince everything. But once he sees Su and realizes the predicament she’s in, he goes silent.

When he speaks again, he covers smoothly by saying that he’d like for his brother to pour three drinks for him. Princess Yeonhwa looks nervous as the clueless Su takes the tea to So, who then drops the cup. He claims he was just being clumsy, so Su is asked to pour him another, this time in a fresh (and hopefully poison-free) cup.

So drinks the first cup without incident, though he begins to falter before he can drink the second. He covers again, continuing his toast to the prince as he downs the second cup. As Su pours him a third, So sends a look to his decidedly unapologetic mother as he thinks, “It wasn’t the cup, but the tea you poisoned.”

She practically shrugs, leaving So to bear his pain in silence as he takes the third cup from Su and realizes that he’s drinking poison she poured for him. His hand shakes as he takes it, but his toast doesn’t falter. He looks at Su as he brings the cup to his lips, while Princess Yeonhwa looks ready to jump out of her seat.

Because of So’s toasts, the crown prince requests that the king not send him away to Shinju as planned. Su, still clueless, goes to prepare more tea, while So looks after her longingly and tries to control his shaking.

So excuses himself gracefully, but the world around him begins to blur as he starts walking away. All he can do is try to control the symptoms long enough to get out of sight, even as blood trickles from his clenched lips.

COMMENTS

Now that’s a noble sacrifice. I admit to being pretty disappointed in So for going along with his mother’s plan on any level, because he should know better by now than to trust her. And for a while there, it seemed like he really did know better, so the only reason I can think of for him to have let himself be fooled was that he truly does desire the throne.

What confuses me is how openly awful Queen Sinmyeongsunseong gets to be without any repercussions whatsoever. I’m honestly surprised that there’s a soul in the palace who isn’t aware of her machinations, which she may as well be announcing from the top of the palace roof, for all the subtlety involved. And yet, even with her explanations, her true motivations aren’t clear—specifically, with what she hoped to accomplish by letting So know about the poisoning. It was clear to us that she was manipulating him yet again, but to what end? I wouldn’t buy that she counted on So drinking the poison himself, but then again, I don’t buy a whole lot when it comes to her.

It’s at least worth noting that So might’ve stopped the poisoning himself by implicating his mother, though he had no choice but to switch tactics when Su arrived. He’s not entirely free of guilt since he tacitly agreed to the poisoning at first, but seeing the way he literally poisoned himself to save the woman he now loves helped erase any lingering feelings of doubt. The fact that he realized the irony in drinking the poison she poured him was doubly sad, because his sacrifice was twofold—and neither party he was saving had any idea that they were even being saved.

Maybe it’s just me being morbid at heart, but So’s sacrifice on Su’s behalf seemed a much more romantic gesture than his unapologetic steamrolling over her feelings from the start of the episode. Even though I do get the steamrolling to a degree, and understand that he’s just not adept at expressing his feelings. He wants so badly to have Su all to himself that he’s missing the essential aspects of actually wooing her, and thinks that if he can possess her, then the only person who’s ever shown him any real affection will stay by his side and continue to support him.

He has a certain amount of self-awareness to know that he’s not the best at being social, but that self-awareness only gets him so far. Although it was funny how clueless he was when Su told him that she liked someone else—enough to think that it was Baek-ah—it’s not so funny when he follows that question up with a threat to kill whoever it is that she likes. And, as he added, to deliberately not be sorry about saying that.

Su’s reactions would be in keeping with a woman who was actually from that time period, but this episode more than ever had me wondering where all of Su’s modern sensibilities went. Even if we take into account that she’s been living in Goryeo for a while and has grown accustomed to life there, her being a time traveler had absolutely zero impact on her actions this episode. It’s not even that I’d like her being from the future to play a bigger role, but it’d be helpful if she spoke up for herself once in a while. Telling So that she liked someone else was a step in the right direction, but then saying nothing to his threats to kill said person felt like we took three steps back. If she’s not afraid of him anymore, what’s preventing her from speaking in her own defense? Or from speaking much at all? I feel like we actually still know just as much about Su as we did starting out, which isn’t that much at all. Here’s hoping that our modern girl will find her voice sooner rather than later.

Every time I feel like I understand why people might not enjoy this show that much, it pulls some ridiculous stunt to make me addicted again.

That poisoning scene was so glorious and so romantic. I completely agree that this noble sacrifice is just so much more beautiful than the bs speech that So pulled on the beach. It really underscores that real love isn't about being eloquent in your affection, but doing acts your loved one will never know about. Has Wook ever done something like this for So? That scene completely turned my opinion around regarding So and his ineptitude for expression. Wouldn't you rather have someone that goes to such great lengths to protect you, but may not be the best at expressing himself (like So) than someone that never really does anything for you, but knows all the right words to say (like Wook)? Just some food - or tea - (too soon?) for thought?

I also feel like the first part of this episode was written quite awkwardly. It felt more of push to get Wook to consider the throne and start to inch toward the ~dark side~ than a true confession of So's feelings. I felt like the writer was like "how can we make Wook realize that his love for Su's is not as guaranteed as it was before. Let's have So kidnap her! And uncomfortably confess his love for her! 2 birds 1 stone!"

The poisoning scene is so romantic and painful. So tried to prove his loyalty to his brother and save the woman he loves in the same time. My tears comes out without I notice. Good episode

The fact that he drank the tea she poured means that he may die and she's going to be punished. He knows it. Maybe that's why he's looking like that - that he knows she's going to be punished and there's no way he can avert that, because the crown prince comes first, and he wishes he could spare her from whatever that is coming. And the fact that she's innocent and clueless, and just a pawn, and he can't do anything about it. And he was saying goodbye to her in his own way, memorising her face as he seals his fate of probable imminent death.

But if he suspects her, then it's a different ball game - that face could mean hurt and betrayal; "You of all people, Su? I trusted you, I love you."

See... I kind of took the scene differently. I don't think he's thinking that Su would be punished. In fact, I think he drank the poison to save the CP and save Su with the knowledge that in his eyes, he's expendable. Which is so sad and... so lovely. He really is committing the ultimate sacrifice because of his love for Su.

"And he was saying goodbye to her in his own way, memorising her face as he seals his fate of probable imminent death."
That is exactly how I took it. Once he realized that he would(could) die, he gave her that one last look.

I don't get the poison scene, so many scheming or plot didn't get told in a good way in this drama up to this episode,
I knew it's nice to read comments and realised different point to understand it, but I just hope they stop making me confuse after watching it,

But then Su inexplicably says that she’ll go back to the palace with So, leaving Wook and Jung with no other options.

Hmm, I didn't think it was inexplicable though, I thought it was because just minutes ago So had said that he'd be willing to kill anyone she had feelings for, and she didn't want to make her heart obvious or bestow anyone (especially Wook) with unnecessary favor.

High five for that! And thanks for the superfast recap. :)

Lee Jun Ki is one of the finest actors with micro-mini expressions and have such STRONG SCREEN PRESENCE. It is hard to look at other people or anywhere, when he is on screen.

Loved the last scene. INTENSE would be the perfect word. This scene was directed beautifully, with right emotions. I was holding my breath, whenever he drank from the cup.

I just want to know how he is going to survive, after drinking 3 cups of poison tea. Even if one, he drank, there would be high chance for him to survive. But 3 cups, its just too much. I know he is going to be alive, since Ji Mong would help him somehow.

What i like about So is that, he is ready to take risk. he is ready to face any challenge, rather than playing safe. He is ready to fight for the people he love and respect. He shows his loyalty towards people he trust.

From the big 3 princes, 4th,8th,3rd prince, I love 4th prince, followed by 3rd prince. Despite i hate his thirst for the throne, and his selfish gruesome ways, i like that he tells people on face what he wants to do. He shows people he DESIRES the throne.

8th prince on the other hand, is just cunning in a way. He plays safe, doesn't want to get in trouble. It feels like he has a poisonous snake living in his heart, which had not yet woken up, He is more scary to me rather, than the 3rd prince.

Soo's character is just making me so frustrated in the later episodes. She has lost her original personality of being fierce, self confident, independence. Now in her place is a weak, dependent woman, of not knowing what to do. Before , her scenes just lighten up the wariness in the palace, now her scenes just makes people very depressed. i sometimes, skip her scenes now.

Totally agree with Zoe.
And I don't know, I kind of see where Soo's coming from even though she gets a lot of hate due to her "deer in headlights" reactions.
I mean how do you react when you're facing the "would be" ruthless king whom you knew from history itself, he "would" kill all his brothers you have grown close and care to, and still act all rainbows and sunshine? Like of course you wouldn't know how to act that wouldn't trigger his supposed "violent behavior".
Doesn't help when said prince is declaring she's his and always touchy and kissy (no matter how much we hope we're in her place coz duh - lee jun ki! hahaha) plus she thinks she's "in love" with Wook. I put quotation in "in love" because I don't think that's really how she feels for Wook. I think she's in love with the idea of a perfect prince in Wook.
But, that's just my opinion. :)

Is it me, or anyone else has difficulty in identifying the prices, when they are numbered, except for the 4th, 8th, 3rd prince. ( Since they are the common ones)

Whenever someone says 13th, it makes me think of Eun than Baek Ah( Or is it Jung? See what i am talking about)

Haha I don't have a problem differentiating them but I imagine a lot of people do. I think that's why the editing team took care to label the princes with writing in the screen whenever there's individual scenes of them. Even though it's the only good thing theyve managed to do haha

Why I suddenly feel disappointed with Prince Wook, when he said that he would want to do with Su what he missed doing with his ex-wife! This is Goryeo, he doesn’t know ladies of this generation (**trying to convinced myself for the love I have with HaNeul :( ).

And that’s the reason why I wouldn’t mind Su taking Prince So’s side. And Heads is so right, where’s the sensibility of Su?

The last part is heart breaking! D*mn that ep 11 teaser! Wanna go inside the screen and comfort Prince Wook!

As irked as I sometimes get with their close-ups, I have this feeling that I'm starting to get used to them and observing every single microexpression on every actor's face, because recently when I saw the Japanese live-action of Wolf Girl and Black Prince, the director kept panning out and used a lot of scenic long-shots, and all I could think of was, "I can't see their expressions, go closer, focus on their faces!!" The Scarlet Heart effect, hah.

Oh my god, you may find it hard to believe and recently I watched the very same movie and thought exactly the same thing. I caught myself thinking that and was kind of annoyed with myself, like, on Scarlet Heart YOU complain about this!

LOL, the subtle ways in which Scarlet Heart is ruining us ^^ Who would have thought! But it's true though, like in Wolf Girl, I got the director's vision, and he had the kind of shots that I'd wished Scarlet Heart had, when I first started it, and it was really pretty. But on actually watching it, I felt this kind of frustration that I wasn't able to get more out of the story, because I couldn't read the actors as much as I'm getting used to doing in SH.

Let alone Wook and So, who are phenomenal with their micro-expressions, despite all the complaints about IU's acting, I then realized I actually have gotten quite a lot from even her close-ups, maybe more than I did from the lead in WG, who I'm fairly sure was technically better (that actress was exceptionally good, in fact.) I was so surprised when I caught myself wishing they'd used some of the SH technique there, though I crib endlessly about it ON SH, hah. Maybe if they just used it a little more sparingly, it would be great.

Watching other dramas/movies will never be the same again after SH. I keep scrutinizing the casts' face and frustrating that I can't see their emotion because they don't do the close-ups. But then I doubt if they can pull out the same level of emotion like LJK though.

Everyone pales off compared to LJK. Those close-ups really help showing his potential. I never complain for close-ups as long as it's LJK.

Lee Joon Gi is indeed the king of historical drama, his screen presence is...majestic!

His micro expressions in the poisoning scene were heart wrenching. His eyes could tell thousand of words, even without voice over, i feel like i could tell what he felt at the moment. Superb!

Waaaah another rollercoaster ride!

I've decided that it's best not to view Wang So through the lens of our 21st century expectations. Not excusing him in any way, but in my opinion, he acts exactly as a physically abused and emotionally stunted 10th century Prince would act in his situation. Doesn't mean his questionable actions are less questionable, but in terms of characterization, others have it said before and far better than me-he's the most multi-layered, realistically drawn out character in the show. It says a lot that even as you may shake your head at him, you still understand where he's coming from, as much as you wish he wouldn't do certain things, you still want to root for him. A shades of gray character at its finest, Wang So-ya you are still my favorite prince!

On the flip side, I do wish they had paid as much diligence to fleshing out Hae Su's character, because she's just more work to understand than So. At this point, okay, I still buy that she's a woman out of time, and her main goal, as it has always been, is to survive and live as best as she can. We know she's capable of going the distance to ensure this (wrist cutting scene) but in this episode, her choices basically boiled down to remaining in the orbit of the Princes and the Palace machinations, and the out Lady Oh provided her. One of those choices definitely increased her chances of survival. The other, while coming with Mr. Perfect Prince Wook himself, is the more dangerous path. It should have been a no brainer, but I guess this is where matters of heart come in and from everything we've seen of Su, she's very much a creature of impulse, ruled by her heart. Can we really blame her for wanting to go back to the idyllic life that she had in Wook's palace? She had it made there, and it comes with a bonus that someone she loves will be away from the palace and the dark future she knows lies in store for them. Still it was nice to see that her lighthearted side still exists-the scene with Jung was adorable, and I liked the way she tried to get the maknae to understand his hyung a little better. It will be interesting to see how she handles the next level of palace intrigue she's been embroiled in.

Say whatever you want about Mean Princess, but I can't help but admire her tenacity. I mean, she's terrible, but she's smart and she's driven and for the amount of screen time she's gotten, she fairly complex and well developed too. I think it was the international version of ep 9 that showed how deeply affected Yeon Hwa was by their exile from the palace. We know it happened 10 years ago, so she was only a little girl and it was during that time Wook must've made his first kill. Just like with So, it doesn't excuse her actions, but it must have been terrifying for a child to go through that, so I can understand her desire to make sure she and family remain safe and never have to go through that again. I almost wish YH had been a prince too. She...

And yes yes yes So-Baek Ah bromance is just so sweet, especially because the feelings are very mutual XD

If Yeonhwa was a prince, I'd totally have all of my money on her, lol, sorry So~ haha. XD I'm glad that you're admiring her tenacity too because I'm on the same boat! Okay, she's doing terrible things, but I do love that she's driven for her desire for the throne rather than her desire to win over a particular love interest or driven by some hate for Soo that was caused by her owning the last of a particular kind of hairpin or something, lmao. The fact that she's well aware of her limitations of being a princess rather than a prince is also something that adds to her character and makes her struggle all the more interesting. Of course I won't say she's a good person, but she's certainly becoming a better character.

Also, totally yes to more Baek Ah!!! I know he can't do as much in the upcoming battle for the throne in comparison to others, considering his status, but I really just want to see him be there for So and to support him!!! Same for Soo as well. D: I hope they can handle his loveline with Woohee well too. OTL

@Andy Pandy, a big thumbs up to all your points. If they continue on this trajectory, it looks like Yeon Hwa will be a fascinating shades of gray character too which is awesome.

I don't like that she's using her smarts for evil but a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do, especially if the girl feels like big bro isn't stepping up to the plate.

It will be interesting to see where she goes from here and how she handles potentially killing the one person apart from Wook and her mom she genuinely seems to care for...

This. This version of Wang So is way more fascinating, interesting and compelling than if he were set up as a typical romantic hero. He's not just a cipher for the ideal man; he's a realistic human, warts and all.

I like Yeon Hwa too, more than Su. She's the female version of So in that she's smart, aggressive and not afraid to take action to secure her future. There's potential for great pathos with her character, if the writers are able to take it far enough.

Yeon Hwa is an ambitious female character, who will stop at nothing to get to her goal. I want to admire her for that but then I remember how she is planning on achieving her goals and I lose that respect. It's like in the drama, Flower in Prison. The villains are two females who are smart, ambitious, and evil and use their resources to get what they want. You want to admire them but you can't when you see how many people they are willing to squash under their feet to get there.

Yeon Hwa and So are both goal-driven people but while So refuses to harm his family (I don't believe his claims that he will kill anyone who is in love with Su), Yeon Hwa is okay with killing Mu, her half-brother. That being said, I really hope Su's vision of So killing Eun is wrong. He is my favorite character here but if he kills his brothers, I will dislike him. Or maybe LJK can induce sympathy even in that situation.

Honestly, when I started watching this show I have my doubts. I tried not to get too excited over this show so I kept my expectations low, but the last two episodes really piqued my interest after all. Oh and LJK's expressions... they slay me. Enough said.

But one thing that bugged me was when Soo told Lady Court Oh that she believed Wook will keep his promise. I mean, she was so adamant that I thought...wasn't this girl just being betrayed by his boyfriend in the 21st century? Cheated, left with debts and all.. Didn't this girl learn or was she just too trusting lol

But that's the thing about Su's character. She trusts too easily and she cares too much. That's why she has landed herself in trouble time and time again, but unfortunately she never learns, and choose to entrust herself to yet another person. I felt her internal monologue was very important when Wook proposed to her, it showed that above all else, she believed that Wook wouldn't change and that'll be her key to safety in this world. If he stayed the same, his feelings for her and what she perceives him to be (cause clearly there's more to him than she knows), she believes that both he and she could be safe.

One thing I suspected earlier but did not feel sure about until this episode was which brothers would side with which. In episode 6 when the brothers were playing a game with Eun and Jung on their shoulders, it seemed symbolic of the future division - one side are those who will oppose/threaten So, and the other will support him.

Today's episode showed that with multiple characters since Yo, Jung, Wook, Won and were on one team, and they all demonstrated how their hostility towards So - Yo and Wook at archery, Won when he conspired with the Queen, and Jung when he reminisced 'easier' day when So wasn't around. Plus, with both his brother and his mother to pressure him, it would be hard for Jung to support his brother.
The other team was Baek Ah, Eun, Mu and So, all of whom either get along or value each other. So demonstrated this specifically this ep when he stated how much he liked Baek Ah - he's Mu's ally, and Eun is/was/will continue to be one of Su's closest friends.

Just thought that was interesting, since at least it shows that the writer did have some sort of direction for all the brothers when it came to the political side. Can't say much else with the way the rest of the plot has been handled, though.

The last 7 minutes of episode..oh wow. All those close ups on So, the Queen, Yeon Hwa, made us wonder what is exactly going on in their heads.

Evil Queen - perhaps she didn't expect how bold So can be. Knowing that it was poison yet he still take it to protect Crown Prince. In a way, protecting the Queen too. Was there a tinge of heartache to see So taking the poison?

Yeon Hwa - She's definitely concern with So for taking the poison. To remember how she tends to So in early episodes, is she really that bad of a person? She didn't care much for the other brothers, but to So. Even when he was an outcast. Even her ambitions, is just to keep herself alive when the new kings take place.

I guess Hae Soo finally understands that every step in the palace can kill her, even when she didn't intend to do anything, which is really the theme of the whole story. By being herself, she endangers her own life. Hence, she tends to hide her feelings around the princes and the queens.

It is not that she's not smart being someone who travels from the future. But the stress and pressure to be in everyone's good book to survive is not something that we can fathom.

Interesting thought though. Friendship = Love?

Well, here to another episode.

Male-female friendships aren't new but they are certainly far more common than they used to be, and in 10th century Goryeo it's possible they were unheard of, particularly between noble scions. When the two of them were talking, I thought yeah, this would be a fundamental misunderstanding between people from two different time periods, except that we've seen Su's friendships with the other princes be accepted as friendships from those around them. So I dunno.

My two cents on the whole 2 version - SBS vs International - debacle.

If you only have time to watch 1, just watch the SBS version (you can find it on kissasian.com). The SBS version is basically just overall better edited and flows so much better than the International one. Also from what I've observed so far, the international version doesn't have any scenes that's not in the SBS version. The SBS version did shorten some scenes of the lesser princes, and have cut out 1 Wook/Su hug that I thought was fairly important, but other than that you're not missing out much by watching the SBS version.

Also major plus point for the SBS version - no weird bgms. The SBS version plays majority instrumentals as bgm and they tend to steer clear more of the questionable ost choices.

Overall, the only reason i can think of to watch the international version first is if you're so desperate and impatient for the next episode. Since the subs obviously comes out faster having been distributed earlier. If you can wait a good twelve hours, then SBS version is your best option, you'll tend to appreciate the whole story a lot more and not be totally put off by the jumpy editing and out of place bgm.

I love how all the females in this show are strong-willed (e.g. Queen Sin, Queen Goodie, Court Lady Oh, Incestuous Sis Yeonhwa, Soondeuk, Woohee) except the main female lead. They all know what they want and won't let anybody stop them from achieving that goal. Yes to strong female characters! But no to Queen Sin's evilness!

I honestly hate Su - which means I essentially hate the premise of this drama. Su was supposed to be this brilliant modern day lady stuck in a time so different she should have been furious about it. But she ended up being a people pleaser type with no personality of her own. Her willful obliviousness grates on my nerves and just - augh!

I'm so disappointing I can't even.

Also, Wook. I simply do not like him. Maybe its the writing, or maybe its the semi-slippery plot but I think there was so much story to condense we're kind of missing huge chunks of character development in the process.

Sorry, I know this isn’t intelligent analysis, but I just have to highlight my squeal moments :

[1] When So/Su are at the beach on horseback, and he says (so very calmly) that if she wanted to run away now, he would do it. I totally believed him. For someone who had fought so hard to remain in Songak, striving for the love, recognition and affection from his family for so long - to throw it all away if Su asked him to, what a sweet way to express that. In a way, I wonder if Su realizes how much power she wields over So.

[2] Wook being all determined. I find it interesting that Wook (especially in the excerpt from today’s episode) will realize So is a rival for Su before So himself realizes it. Interesting times. I actually like the stand-offs Wook and So are having - good chemistry - I do feel the two of them are different but of equal strength, resolve, determination, and power

[3] Baek Ah & Woo Hoo - SO CUTE! I love how he looks at her when he recognizes the “new recruit” amongst the dancers.

[4] Of course, when So looks longingly at Su during his 3rd drink of the poisoned tea, and as she walks away.

[5] Lady Oh trying to advise Su about her decisions. I like the fact that Su has an older female mentor who is watching out for her best interests. I do find it interesting that the “help” sees So’s affections for Su more so than most everyone else (except Wook and Queen Mommy Dearest). But, I don’t even think that Wook really knows So is a rival until episode 11.

[6] OKay, I don’t really like Yeon Hwa, but her obvious distress over Wang So drinking the poisoned tea actually makes me soften a bit towards her. She is intelligent, cunning, determined, assertive….she actually has some really great qualities. But, she still has a heart for Wang So, so I’m willing to cut her some slack.

Piggy backing off your post hehe...

[1] The beach scene made me so conflicted. There was so much said there and made 21st century me SMH, and yet the me who enjoys a man who knows what he wants and is straight forward about his intentions and doesn't play games was all swoony. I mean..I cannot explain why I found So's "Try and run away from me, if you can." thing hot..but I did. maybe it was the swagger and the smile, and then the swagger again when he sauntered away after giving her that hair pin??

[2] Wook's face when he saw So and Soo on horseback definitely made me sit up. If I thought he had stank face before when Soo hugged Jung in the forest, it was stank face x1000 when he saw how Soo was nestled in So's embrace. I could almost see the steam coming out of his ears and it was great to see the passive Wook display some other type of emotion.

[4] Ahhh the poison scene....I like how Soo did notice the way So's hands were shaking. I was whimpering when So was staring at Soo so intently as she was leaving, because, yeah, you've gone and drank the whole damn pot of poison now, Prince Wang So, look your fill because this might definitely be the last time you see the one you love. I'm surprised HS didn't burn up at that point because of the intensity of WS's stare.

[6] Yeon Hwa is low key-high key is in love with Wang So. I have a feeling that the poison wasn't actually MEANT to be lethal...and her main goal was to get HS killed. She had no idea that WS would be collateral damage and Kang Hanna totally sold YH's distress and "Oh fuckity fuck fuck WHY IS HE DRINKING THAT, THAT TEA IS NOT FOR YOU YOU HANDSOME FOOL, STOP THAT THIS INSTANT" expression during the whole damn thing. If I wasn't busy crying for So, I would have been laughing at how her plan went spectacularly off the rails (in regards to harming So).

I also liked the make up scene. I mean..hot damn, will there be many more make up scenes? Please say yes. Prince So seems to prefer the waist grab over the wrist grab which, rawr, I totally approve because more body contact (-and also because the wrist grab seems to be a BA+WS thing which hahahah I loooove). I also enjoy how he always leans down so he can properly look her into the eye..it's a nice throw back to the simpler times and when they first had that "should I call you my person" conversation.

And this barely needs to be said, but congrats to the costume and hair dept. Each time I think I've gotten used to LJK's hotness, he comes out in yet another costume and hairstyle and I'm emotionally compromised all over again. What is this sorcery?? Why does he look better in a pony tail that 90% of the top models of the world? How does IU avoig being cut by those cheekbones, and that jawline?? Will we ever know?? I respectfully disagree with the recap opinion. Su is not stupid. She's figured out now where she is, in the palace. Nobody "in the palace" expects her to continue to behave like the "muddled" girl who bumped her head. Everyone that comes into the palace has to learn that mistakes often mean death or someone you care for gets punished. She's learned. She's keeping her head down. Not like she hasn't been told enough times. How thick and impulsive do you expect her to be?

As for So, he's going to be king because he behaves like a king. None of the other brothers actually have "what it takes" to be king. At least that's the way this story is being told. You have to be bold, convicted, and sometimes arrogant. You have to be cruel and shrewd. You also have to be loyal and forgiving. I'm hoping that's direction this is taking at least

That's it. A king is not a wimp, nor is a nice guy, and doesn't drown himself with indecisiveness (not for too long at least), for better or for worse that's the way it is. Wang So is king material from episode 1.

That's it, right there. That's the show. You have to be ruthless and go the distance if you want to be King...which is why is YH was a Prince, the others would be dead in the water, lol, because Mean Princess does NOT play games when it comes to her goals.

I mean..I'm not sure why I'm delighting so much in her cleverness and determination especially because she puts it to such bad use, but perhaps it's because in comparison to her brother, she gets shit done?

Anyway, back to topic. Wang So is the only one who hhas what it takes, agreed 100%.

I disagree about Yeon Hwa. She will kill for power. So won't do that. He'll kill once he's wronged. He'll kill if he or someone he wants to protect are in danger but I don't believe he'll slaughter his brothers just to be king. If he ends up killing them it's because they have become an actual danger to him. I'm already disappointed that he's going to find himself at deadly odds with Wook. I'm sure Wook will be the one to start it. It's about time for the "boy scout" to finally say hell with it. I'm sure it will lead to his downfall.

I agree with you about the fact that it is different motivation that would push YH and WS to kill.

They are different in that way, but what I was getting at is that they WOULD kill to achieve their goals. Both of them would go to extremes to get what they want, and that's why they're most likely to survive and succeed at the palace wars.

Side note, So's mother is seriously the worst mother ever, but in Jealousy Incarnate she's absolutely delightful, it's hard to hate her sometimes.

The fact that we hate her here, and love her in Jelousy Incarnate proves she's a great actress that can make the viewer believe any character she's given.

I am quite in awe of her, and LJK. When they are together on a scene other characters kind of fade in the background. They're great.

She is a great actress! All of the older actors in ML is actually great.

Did you notice Queen Hwangbo is also in Jealousy Incarnate? She played Pyo Nari's mother but she only appeared for a few minutes.

I don't know what the big deal is about Yeonhwa. She's just nasty queen 2.0. She's willing to kill most of her brothers for power simply because she thinks that will ensure her survival. Think again. The only real way out of the palace is by divine intervention or death.

That's the thing though. Yeon Hwa doesn't want to be OUT of the palace. She wants to stay in, she wants to rule it all.

And your point "She’s just nasty queen 2.0. She’s willing to kill most of her brothers for power simply because she thinks that will ensure her survival. " is exactly right. In Goryeo, power is what ensures that you live or die, and unfortunately, it's people like Evil Queen mommy and Yeon Hwa who seem best suited to this. They are ruthless, smart and have managed to ball up their guilty consciences or empathy into a tiny pebble and it's kinda bizarrely satisfying to see them succeed so well at getting what they want/go all our for their goals.

It's an interesting foil to Hae Su's character.

I don't think it's bizarre at all to feel satisfied to see them succeed. I saw the showrunner of Bojack Horseman at a talk , (a completely different show with despicable character) and he said that the reason we feel compelled to watch a character is you see that character want something and you see them trying for it over and over again, and that struggle is what's fascinating. It's the way THROUGH that makes us interested not the end result. In scarlet heart, that's why So is compelling to watch, we know what he wants: love. We see him struggling for it, attempting over and over again no matter how wrong-headed to get to his goal. We feel sympathy when he doesn't get what he wants. We feel joy when he does. The same with Yeonhwa, her goal is CLEAR and we see her attempt over and over again. Again, viewer satisfaction. It's really the only thing missing from the Su character, she really needs a compelling goal to get me on board other than being played by the very cute IU.

the problem with hae soo, that she has more goals, not only one. she does not distinguish herself from those she loves or who are important to her - she has more - often contradictory - goals
( we all want world peace, unicorns and rainbows in our heart - then we choose something more accessible)

I’ve been on the So/Su ship ever since….well, frankly, the promotional poster that is emblematic of the whole show.

I’d be lying if I said I would have liked a bit more mutual romance by now. I mean, come on, we’re already at episode 10/11. But, that being said, I have to admit, I do like the slow burn.

It’s not just the fact that they started off as friends. It’s not even that they do share each other’s deepest thoughts and troubles with one another, and challenge one another in a really constructive way.

I strangely like it because I want Wang So to work for Hae Su’s affections. This may seem counter-intuitive because the poor man is just so starved for love and affection, you’d almost want ONE thing to go his way easily. Yet…..no. I strangely feel that while he may obviously want Hae Su (or anything, really) to be all his, there’s something in the striving that makes him….well, him.

And it will be all the sweeter when he does end up winning her love, partially because it has to be such a conscious choice on her part. It’s not some blind infatuation or burning chemistry that petters out. It’s that hard-earned love that is so satisfying (like Odysseus and Penelope in the Odyssey).

Unlike many, I've always thought the writer knew exactly what s/he was doing with that romance. The writer wasn't just interested in sinking the Su and Uk Titanic, it had to be flogged, crucified and burnt at the stake.
I'm glad there wasn't some kind of timeline that they had to follow but to finally tie up all the elements in one key moment.

Oh, I totally concur with you! I think the writer was purposeful in the slow pace. I find So-Su's love story believable.

But, also the Wook-Su ship had to have its moment because *something* has to ignite Wook to vie for the throne: Su.

I can imagine wang so works towards earning hae soo's love, earns that love, and then marries nasty princess yeo hwa instead for some reason.

The heartbreak!

Dont even mention wang wook. He was slow when it comes to professing his love, and how fast can he be when it comes to winning back her love, post wang wook?

I am not sure, and I am curious of the whole thing.

If only I can fast forward the heart break though. If they follow the course of history and make wang so and yeo hwa a married couple, that is.

OMG, how I am so loving LJK! His acting incredible. And as mentioned by some earlier, how in the world was he able to get his neck to do all that? He truly is the one carrying this show, and probably the only reason why im still watching it, being aware of how its supposed to end. (Dont like sad endings). LJK's acting just fasinates me! KHN's acting surprised me as well. After seeing his personality on Running Man, and then, him doing this role, I'm impressed.

The award still goes to LJK tho.

Now as far as IU is concerned. First, I had no problem with her and was thinking she was doing a fine job. But now at this point in the show, I can see/understand where she is lacking. We are halfway through the show and her character is still so-o-o in love with Wook. We know she is supposed to fall hard for So, but it would make it more believable if she were able to convey some sort of conflicting feelings towards him. Not the "deer in headlights" look that some had mentioned earlier.

I can see why LJK said he was jealous of how much focus was placed on IU's and KHN's love line in the beginning. If So and IU's character were supposed to be the leads, why was so much screen time devoted to Soo and Wook? The way its playing out, it would seem that LJK was second lead...and that's not acceptable.

I know this is an expensive drama to make, but I kind of feel when it ends, we are all going to be ( or at least I will), saying how this really had the potential of something really great.

Sorry, I'm just rambling, but just trying to quickly get my thoughts out.

"As she applies the makeup over his scar, Su tries explaining that there are different types of affection. Naturally, someone feels affection for another who helps them through a difficult time, but they’d be more inclined to call that person a friend. What she worries about, she claims, is that So might be confusing friendly affection for love. "
Isn't it applicable for So as well? She translated Wook help when she woke up in Goryeon era into love. About time someone showed her the mirror.

Before I grow zits from keeping this to myself, here it goes:

First,
I like how the drama seem to grow on me in certain aspects, that it actually become a drama I am looking forward to watch every single week. Perhaps it's the visuals, perhaps it's the music, or perhaps it's Wang So sans his mask. I dunno. But sth changed, and it's good.

Second,
Since I watched Bu Bu Jing Xin before, it is inevitable for me to compare the two, and after this episode, I can say it with ease that Moon Lovers: Ryeo is a different drama. It's not a korean version of it, and it is not according to the original novel as well (though it once claimed to be). It's different. But I can compare these (just like how people compare two different dramas):
- BBJX feels choppy, Ryeo flows better from one eps to another.
- I like Ryeo's music better. BBJX is more quiet. There is modern feel to it (since the main character is someone from the future, I assume?)
- apart from Wang So's, I honestly dont like the princes' robe color palette in Ryeo. Too colorful. Doesnt look elegant. Made them look like kids.
- I think the main character in the Ryeo story is much slower than the main character in BBJX. By no means, it's not IU's fault, it might be the script that made it that way. In BBJX, I have the impression that she grows from wild, clueless girl to someone wiser and bright the time she entered the palace. Despite of the palace customs and ethic, she still shows traces of modern mind behind the traditional facade. She studies hard, master something during that time, climb rank gracefully, and become the king's tea server fast. In Ryeo, she doesnt really change that much. She woke up clueless but thinking she knows it all. By the time she entered the palace until now, she sneaks out (to the cave inside the palace, to be with wook) and freaks out. She works, yes. But not to the extent that she shows a well known growth aside from the soap (tea? She asked one of the prince and simply served tea based on his answer. Quite okay, but it's sth other court lady can do as well) i have to give thumb up to the BB cream though.

How I regret that she has limited knowledge in history. This limited knowledge doesnt give her niche of being someone from the future. She is ordinary, and surprisingly, her reaction is also ordinary and tactless, despite having the astronomer as a wise friend who visited the future too. This is like throwing the fact that she came from the future, out of the window. If anything, she acted like a child, freaking out, blurting things and well on her way to ruining everything.

Plus, she SOMEHOW got a glimpse of how gwangjong looks like and how he killed people, and then....she freaked out. She came from the future. It was unbelievable that she only freaked out now. Writer, please.

This ep left me heartbroken. Poor So, poor So. Why did you fall for her again? Seriously, I need a reminder.

I know Su is supposed to be this outspoken, modern girl, and some viewers are really pushing for that super duck-out-of-water comedic trope, but I think her responses are in line with her experiences and personality.

She has been in a place where she gets hit, thrown on the ground, hair pulled, attacked, and forced to hold books about her head for hours for seemingly minor infractions for quite a while. Possibly several years by now. Court Lady Oh is providing rigorous, continual training on how Su is supposed to act. Su's also been made aware that tiny things which seem stupid to us, like dropping a tea cup, can mean she'll be put to death. She's also seen So totally covered in blood and raging after slaughtering scores of people and knows he's serious when he says crap like that.

Even the most brash and reckless modern girl would adapt under those circumstances, blending into her surroundings to avoid further punishment.

Su, however, isn't brash to begin with. She's a supporter. She seems to attach herself to people and then be unfailingly loyal and supportive of them, even when it hurts her. If Lady Oh, Wook, and others need Su to act more lady like, she will adapt to their wishes to the extent she's able.

Yes I like what you've said here. She is a supporter, but I think she's now in a situation, like all of these palace people, where she has to choose whom to support when the people she loves are at odds with and scheming against each other, more because of their families than through choices of their own.

That's partially why I liked Soon Deok saying to her it's not her place anymore to support Eun. It was like she was telling her hands off but also absolving Su of responsibility for Eun, who has his own destiny to fulfill.

I love Su's personality myself. Maybe the maternal instinct kicking in but I feel just like Lady Oh towards her! What I'm not enjoying is how small Su is becoming. She's always been small physically but she had a huge personality - joyful, brave, reckless, charming, kind - at the beginning that made the princes and me fall in love with her. We still see that personality shine through a little but her light has been flickering out for some time and I keep noticing how tiny she looks when I only noticed it a little at the beginning. From the previews that million watt smile is absent and I want it back! As well, if she really is going to follow in a variation of Lady Oh's footsteps to the end - tragic love, submission to vicious rivals, constricted behaviour and space - I'm unsure I can watch it happen.

i decided to give this drama a go today after watching moonlight and here is my take on the two dramas :

moon lovers : the story has a good plot but it was destroyed by the writing/editing skills. I don't know whose fault it is though . I feel like the team just started off with a star-studded cast, with an amazing script and over-hype over this matter that they became big-headed.Its like they knew their drama will get rating so they didn't give much thought to the story flow ( maybe influenced by success of DOTS who had the same factors) and that's where they went wrong. They have so many central characters with many story-lines that its too much to fit in the 1 hour gap and thus the writing turned messy. A big cast needs stronger writing.

moonlight : this drama probably felt intimated initially with moon lovers and the writers knew it. PBG in his first lead role and KYJ in her first adult lead role meant they were the small kids in the big playground but they got lucky for 2 reasons :
1)the writing is good . The story flows smoothly and focuses on the central characters. The story is moving forward without unnecessary scenes that drag. Each ep builds up to the finale or strengthens character bonds. 2) the main actors are good ... their chemistry actually works and looks good. They do these cute gestures that don't seem awkward probably because off screen they are close like siblings.

Thanks, HeadsNo2!

Your recap is really helpful in understanding details and new characters as they appear.

Time to play "Six Degrees of Separation: Three Kingdoms Edition." ;-)

That norigae ornament of Woo-hee's that Baek-Ah found is very interesting. In the episode when he picked it up, it sure as heck looked like a tapir to me... a mythical beast resembling a pig with antlers. It devours nightmares, according to the story line in THE KING'S DAUGHTER, SU BAEK-HYANG. It was also the symbol of The Band, the undercover operatives of the King of Baekche. SBH herself was their Mata Hari.

In KDSBH, The Band was formed after a spy from Gogoryeo betrayed the Baekche king's father. I'm willing to wager that Woo-hee is one of SBH's umpty-great-granddaughters from Later Baekche -- on a mission to wreak vengeance on the successors of Gogoryeo.

Bwahaha!

Having seen a couple of episodes and then seeing all the controversy/heated discussion around the ratings, acting, disjointed editing/directions, chemistry and romantic scenes. The drama around this drama totally reminds me of BOF. Except the chemistry between the leads was better in BOF. I totally get why it's grabbed a lot of international fans' attention based on LJK's acting alone, and why the Korean audience has shunned it despite his efforts.

After this ep, I can't help but think if Su is really going to end up with So or what. I thought I'd have second lead syndrome here as well, but Lee Jun Ki is jjang~ Su seems to really really like Wook, and I still can't figure if she is developing feelings for So as well, so I'm worried how she'll shift or if she will actually be shifting from Wook to So. The only thing keeping my So-Su hopes up is the series' poster with So and Su in it. Ha!
