First script reading for Bride of the Water God

Get ready for some fun! The fantasy rom-com manhwa adaptation Bride of the Water God 2017 held its first script read and released cast photos. In the original popular manhwa, a girl from a drought-stricken land is offered to the water god as a sacrifice for rain. Unlike the original, the remake will be set in 2017 and will have a completely new setup while using the original characters and their dynamics.

In this new story, Nam Joo-hyuk (Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju) plays the main role of the water god Ha-baek. He is described as a serious, chic, and narcissistic god. Shin Se-kyung (Six Flying Dragons) plays So-ah, a doctor who is the unknowing bride to the water god, whose family is destined to serve the water god for generations.

Im Joo-hwan (Uncontrollably Fond) plays self-made entrepreneur and perfect human, Hu-ye, who is even more perfect than the gods. Krystal (She’s So Lovable) plays the goddess Mu-ra, who is an official of the god-world water department and is sent to the human world. Gong Myung (Individualist Ji-young) plays the god Bi-ryum, who is an official of the sky department.

This drama has some heavy hitters behind it with PD Kim Byung-soo (NineQueen In-hyun’s Man) and writer Jung Yoon-jung (MisaengArang and the Magistrate) both signed on. I loved Queen In-yun’s Man and I lived for Misaeng, so I’m looking forward to what this pairing has to offer. Unfortunately, I also have a feeling that Bride of the Water God 2017 will inevitably be compared to The Lonely Shining Goblin, which has become the benchmark for all new fantasy dramas. Both shows share similar elements: a bride promised to a god and a spiritual world functioning within the human realm, but hopefully Bride of the Water God 2017 will make a name for itself by doing things differently.

Bride of the Water God 2017 will air on Mondays and Tuesdays following Circle. It premieres July 3 on tvN.

I'm excited to see this drama. I enjoyed Nam Joo-hyuk in Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju, he does silly and quietly dramatic very well.

"In this new story, Nam Joo-hyuk (Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju) plays the main role of the water god Ha-baek. He is described as a serious, chic, and narcissistic god."

So NJH's adorable smiles will be far and few between? So sad :(

On another note, I am loving this trend of fantasy dramas. Goblin, My Love from Another Star, The Legend of the Blue Sea, etc. I am looking forward to this one!

Misaeng is one of my favorite dramas, and I was already missing Nam Yoo Hyuk. Plus, Shin Se Kyung has been quite good and likeable in her last projects. So I'm definitely looking forward to this. My NJH fangirl heart will cheer for their success ?

I am still a bit salty over the fact that they updated the story. What about all the pretty clothes and scenery!! It will be interesting to see how it is adapted.

I just read your comment after I made mine, but that's exactly the first thing I thought. I feel like the clothes are such a huge part of the manhwa.

Yes! I was disappointed when they decided to change it up. My hope was to see the scenery and the beautiful clothing. *sigh*

I do have to say though, NJH was not my first choice to play Ha-baek. Will have to see how this turns out.

@niall Given the right roles, this cast could be great. Nam Joo-hyuk isn't someone I'd call consistent, but he was a treasure in Weightlifting Fairy. Shin Se-kyung isn't bad but needs the right leading man to help elevate her. Gong Myung has lately been showing us he's got the stuff. Im Joo-hwan has been around for a while and is someone I'd call solid. Maybe the acting caliber isn't that of Goblin, but if the script is well-written, the director does a swell job, and the actors can really jump into their characters -- this could be a fine, fun show!

I have limited knowledge on the various actors but wouldn't say any are awful from what I've seen them in.

I am watching Nam Joo-Hyuk in Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-Joo right now and he is great in the drama, really doing a good job. I've not seen anything else he is in though but he is an adorable puppy in WFKBJ.

I've only seen Shin Se-Kyung in Girl Who Can See Smells and she wasn't amazing, but she was fine in it and I had no complaints about her acting.

Only seen Lim Ju-Hwan in Oh My Ghostess and I think he did an excellent job as the creepy brother-in-law.

Only one I am questioning is Krystal. Only saw her in Heirs and wasn't impressed with her. But since she is a secondary character I am not overly bothered.

After their recent projects I'm really looking forward to Nam Joo Hyuk and Shin Se Kyung and of course Im Joo Hwan is always top notch. It does sound so Goblin knock off-ish (please don't be!) and it will be nice if it's at least similar in quality. Fingers crossed that Krystal has been studying acting.

krystal was ok in heirs.. haven't watched any other work
but i am surely dreading the lead female.. blademan girl rt.. she is bad as bad can be.. well not as bad as that actress from wanted.. but bad..

NJH would love to give him a chance.. i hope he doesn't mess up..

but too bad, he would have looked b'ful in old era clothes.. nt so much in modern attire

This made my watchlist because of Nam Joo Hyuk. I wonder how he will be in a more serious role.

I used to read this manhwa, so I'm interested to see this drama adaption.

I'm really interested to see how they decide to modernize this storyline ♥ ♥ ♥

I do believe so. It's been a while. Another reason to be a bit skeptical of doing a modern translation. There are many fantasy elements that might not work in today's world.

What a pretty cast! I've read the manhwa and Nam Joo-hyuk isn't the first person I would have thought of as Ha-baek, but I loved him in Bok-joo!

I still can't really figure out how this modern day adaptation is going to work. Plus, let me mourn in advance all the pretty clothes in the manhwa we won't get to see.

I love Misaeng. I have confidence in the writer.

For the cast, I have heard so much here that they should have cast better options; however, I think as this is a fantasy drama and there are quite a few 'gods' and 'goddesses' involved, their acting stiff might be considered god-like since gods and goddesses have to be a bit different from ordinary ppl right?

I just hold my fingers crossed then.

Loved NJH in WFKBJ. Thought he'd make me cringe with the crying scenes so I skipped them the first time, but dang I was impressed with them + his eyes during the therapy scenes. More than the ratings, I hope he does well in this drama.

Not a fan of Se-kyung yet but based on most pictures/screenshots I've seen of her she always has one expression, it's not helping, lmao

I feel like this has the potential to be either really good or really bad, so I don't want to write it off completely. However, I've just never connected with Shin Se-kyung in any of her characters before. For some reason she always felt really flat and hard to empathize with... Idk.

Her best role to date was in Girl Who Sees Smells. She does bubbly and cute well, but she's stiff and unemotional in more serious stuff. I hope her So-ah isn't dour like her usual character type.

Even in Girl Who Sees Smells... Well granted both her and Yoo-chun are weaker actors who need someone else to carry their performance so without that it was just Namgoong Min stealing the show. But yeah I didn't even really like her there. I think I dropped it because it was just so hard for me to connect with either of the main characters or buy into their romance. It was pretty late into the series too - I really wanted to give the show a decent chance.

Shit! Im Joo-hwan is playing second lead to freaking Nam Joo-hyuk, are you for real?! Ugh! Not that I hate Nam Joo-hyuk, but seriously I'm already salty over the fact that they made the story modern and he's not that great of an actor but Im Joo-hwan playing second to him is so unfair. I liked Habaek the most in what I read of the manhwa but it looks like Huye will be the one I watch for. If I remember right, Huye was the oppa that loved So-ah before she got sacrificed, right? Mu-ra's character was really chic and cold if I remember right, so I suppose Krystal doesn't have to do much emoting. Ugh, this makes me sad and mad at the same time.
Also, I really wanted to see the costumes especially So-ah's red wedding dress, it was drawn so prettily.

I've never read the manhwa so I have no idea about the age of the characters. However, the casting is pitching at the younger crowd thus the lead cannot be someone like Im Joo Hwan. For 'youth' dramas, older actors(those above 30) usually take secondary roles. If they want to be the lead, they should avoid such dramas. It's not uncommon for more experienced, better actor to be second to a younger, lesser experienced but more popular one. Maybe that's why Korean actors are take their post military comeback so seriously. Even Gong Yoo took a while to get his popularity back.

Well the pictures aren't screaming chemistry to me, to be honest. I find pictures from table readings to be forthcoming on what the drama has in store for us and this one's aren't particularly exciting.
I'll still give it a chance because I am intrigued with the story, even though I still don't understand why they decided to go with an adaptation in 2017.
I hope tvN will prove me wrong in my very low expectations.

Not exactly feeling the premise, but the director's and writer's credits have me sold for now. I hope it'll be good! I loved Nam Joo-hyuk in Weightlifting, and really liked Shin Se-kyung in Girl Who Sees Smells, so decidedly optimistic for their pairing. Not that I don't wish Im Joo-hwan to be the lead. He looks So. Good. in the script reading, I almost didn't recognize him ???

I was hype for this once but not anymore after knowing the cast, Nam Jo hyuk is okay though not strong enough but Shin Se Kyung is ehhhh... It's not a good sign when two of the main leads has no solid acting. Im Jo hwan is great but Nam Jo hyuk def need a stronger leading actress than SSK, I wonder why they cast her.

This sounds like Deok-hwa romancing Shin, the Goblin. XD

On another note, I'm sad that Im Joo-hwan oppa is playing the second lead yet again. I'm hoping to see a project where he headlines as the main lead and gets the girl. I hope this production can pull off the story despite the changes in original setup, it'd be such a shame for the manhwa fans if they can't pull this off.

Ah, the disappointment... this manwha isn't fantastic or anything, but the art and design of the clothes was freaking gorgeous. It's pretty inexplicable that they would intentionally change the best part of the manwha when converting it to drama D:
And then you cast Nam Joo Hyuk as "serious" and "chic"... like, did they not watch Scarlet Heart? (actually, maybe they didn't. A lot of Korea didn't)
I just think it's a shame, considering the potential of this thing!
Now that I'm done moaning, I hope this drama proves me wrong by being amazing! :D

They haven't cast Nam Joo Hyuk's child counterpart yet? I guess they have thrown the curse out of the window, although it has so much potential for hilarious hijinks.

I don't hate NJH, but i don't find him suitable for this role yet. Actually i want more mature actor or have some better experience than him. Because i really loooove the manhwa, and i don't want my imagination all this time ruin with this. But who knows, right? *fingers crossed*
Same goes for SSK, hope she can make it, since i loved her in TGWSS and SFD. Yes, i didn't like her in her previous dramas before those. But i think she is likeable in her 2 latest dramas.
For Krystal, yes i know she is beautiful (a Goddess??!) but i don't hope much from her.
Oh Im Joo Hwan, wish him get better recognition and shine through this.
Just like some comments, i'm not sure if the modern set will be better than the original. Because i really really want to see the world water, beautiful clothes and the scenery as pictured in the manhwa.
But, what can we do chingu readers ? Hope it delivers well
