Yeo Jin-gu and Chun Jung-myung up for Absolute Boyfriend

The Korean adaptation of Absolute Boyfriend has been on a shape-shifting ride over the past few weeks, but some of the details have finally fallen into place. Producers briefly entertained a name change to Rom-Com King, but thankfully have given that idea up—you can call a drama by any other name, but a remake’s still a remake! Song Ji-hyo (This Week, My Wife Will Have an Affair) has reportedly turned down the offer to play the female lead, but Yeo Jin-gu (Reunited Worlds) has been offered a starring role as the AI robot, while Chun Jung-Myung (Master—God of Noodles) is confirmed to play his love rival, a top star.

Absolute Boyfriend is a manga that’s been previously adapted into Japanese and Taiwanese dramas, and with the recent surge in robot dramas in dramaland (I’m Not a Robot concluded in January, while pre-produced Are You Human Too, starring Seo Kang-joon, will air in June on KBS), it makes sense that entertainment execs would want to turn to time-tested material.

Chun had been in talks for the role of top star Ma Wang-joon since March, but when Rom-Com King got passed on by OCN and Song Ji-hyo dropped out of the project, there was talk that he had dropped out as well. But a confirmation came in recently that he’ll play the top star, who will compete with boyfriend-bot Young-gu for the affections of the heroine, Dada. Yeo is currently considering the offer to play the meticulously programmed Young-gu, who becomes gradually self-aware as he meets Dada.

I’m a bit ambivalent about Chun’s casting, but I liked him in Heart to Heart and I have hopes for him in this rom-com. On the other hand, I like Yeo in everything, and even though Reunited Worlds disappointed, if he can bring some of the cracklin’ energy of his Circle performance to the character, I’m 100 percent in.

Speaking of all of these cyborgs, if they look like Yeo Jin-gu, Chae Soo-bin, and Seo Kang-joon and are programmed to meet every romantic need, maybe ordering significant-other-bots isn’t such a crazy idea?

Absolute Boyfriend will be helmed by Jung Jung-hwa (Flower Boy Next Door) and written by Yang Hyuk-moon (Legendary Witch). While previously expected to air on OCN, its current airdate and station are yet to be determined.

I hope other channel will pick up this drama if these two confirm. I have no trust on OCN to do romcom right😅 although I have watched almost all of them.

Yeo Jin-gu as a robot sounds good 😎 I actually have no idea about Absolute Boyfriend, but I think I'll be checking on this one. But the PD + writer don't look too promising imo.

Yeo Jin-gu is 17 years younger than Chun Jung-myung, so casting an actress whose age is somewhere in the middle seems like a good idea. But what's for sure is that Yeo Jin-gu would make an adorable robot!

Speaking of adorable, that pic of YJG with a hint of a come-hither look is killing me! At least he's legal now. :)

OCN? Why is everything I want to watch unavailable in the U.S.? Guess I shouldn't assume that. I've been waiting for Chun Jung myung to be in another drama - yay! I just saw an above headline "Lee Je-hoon out, Chun Jung-myun in Heart to Heart". Oh so glad CJM was in Heart to Heart - he was perfect for that part.

Dramafever picks up a lot of the OCN stuff now. They're not in Kocowa so they have to go after it. Netflix does get some though.

Dramafever picks up some OCN (thankfully) but it seems it's usually fluffy romcoms for the younger generation, which I don't usually watch. Although, was Stranger OCN? Maybe we could request this drama early and they'll pick it up.

Now that’s a dream cast.

What would the drama be about? For some reason those names make me want it to be a period drama maybe set during the Occupation, or a sageuk. Has Park Bo-young ever done anything historical before?

There is no release date yet.

She turned down "Along With The Gods" for that.
She could've been working with Ha Jung-woo etc. That movie would've reboot her career.
I want a few words with whoever is managing her. They are doing a terrible job.

Please be good if he accepts! Reunited Worlds was almost offensively mediocre in every way. Like, I was offended on his behalf that he had to work on such a boring show. He deserves a much better, more interesting project with a strong cast that’s worthy of him. I echo the worries that it will be on OCN, though. Their romance track record... isn’t great.

I haven’t seen the original but I’ve heard it’s good. This robot trend is going strong. Glad we finally got word on when Are You Human Too? is airing. Marking my calendar for June!

Hmmm this casting seems a bit odd. YJG and CJM as love rivals going after the same woman when their nearly twenty years apart? She'll either be too old for YJG or too young for CJM. Maybe they can find someone in the middle? If I had to pick though, I'd rather them cast an actress closer to YJG's age, but then CJM will wind up like Uhm Ki Joon in Im not a Robot.

It hits me as odd for that reason, too. But from the comments I must be the odd one out anyway because I read Chun and started giggling at the thought of seeing him again, while I read Yeo Jin Goo and thought, "him again?" 😳

I'm honestly nervous for this, I hope they would find the perfect female lead for this and that the script would give justice to the original story and everyone involved in this. YJG has declined two projects already so I hope he has finally found a good project.

Anyway... Yeo Jin Goo abs!!!!!!!

Here's hoping for TvN. They haven't done a robot show, yet. Don't know the writer or director well, so who can say how this will turn out.

I feel like Yeo Jin Goo picks projects based on character premise rather than the overall drama, and it's been his downfall sometimes ( Orange Marmalade and Reunited Worlds (and to an extend Jackpot) had an interesting lead male character idea but turned out to have lackluster everything else).

That said, he can do innocent well, excels at subtle emotions, and also has the look and voice of someone more mature. I imagine Young-gu as sort of a timeless character, almost like you'd think of an immortal, who can't be defined by age. So I think it's a great fit for him.

Love the idea of Park Bo Young for DaDa. Cause she's kind of the like YJG, where she can seem a lot younger if she is if played right, or seem older if played right. Also, this character is supposed to be cold, and I kinda like the idea of PBY as a little more withdrawn and reserved, since we see her spunkiness a lot. I like seeing actors do something different.

I agree. He reminds me of Park Hae-jin in that regard choosing parts for the acting potential rather than the drama as a whole. I was thinking how ironic it is that he's so good and his dramas are so bad.

He's had a mix of both good and bad projects but sadly even the good ones didn't get the reception they deserved (like Circle or Shoot Me in the Heart) and people tend to only remember the bad ones. I have to admit the bad ones do really stand out like a sore thumb. He should've just rested after Circle/1987 and didn't add RW among his bad projects. :(I do understand why he chose it though... he's been talking about wanting to get that kind of role...)

So true. I really want a season 2 of Circle, and obviously so do the writers with that finale cliffhanger, but I fear that won’t happen because it didn’t get the greatest ratings (although that isn’t always a determining factor in whether a show gets a second season). It’s honestly the only drama of his that I’ve seen that I really liked.

I still need to watch most of his movies—I have several downloaded and need to just press play—but I did like Shoot Me in the Heart (like I wouldn’t anyway, with both him and LMK). I loved him in Hwayi: A Monster Boy but didn’t like the movie overall because I’m not into gangster films. Which of his other films would you (or anyone else) recommend?

2

I'd recommend both Warriors of the Dawn and The Long Way Home, although both got mixed reviews. I really enjoyed Warriors of the Dawn and I really appreciate how despite that this is like his nth time playing a prince, it's very different from the usual royalties he played. The subs out for WOD though are not accurate and I got to only properly watch it through a DVD copy. If you have downloaded a copy of that, I could share the subs I have. :D

I also liked The Long Way Home where he played a North Korean soldier opposite Sol Kyung Gu. I think they really had great chemistry together and it's nice to see Yeo Jin Goo playing a comedic character.

Thinking about it, both movies are about wars but not exactly grand in scale but both give more focus on the characters instead of the war at hand.

He's had a very brief role in 1987 too and I'm still waiting for the subs to come out, but that brief appearance was absolutely heart wrenching to watch and must have been very difficult to film.

And yes to Circle Season 2 which we are so unlikely to ever get. T_T

@mindy :D

2

Agree but last year alone only RW was not worth my time and I'm usually a very loyal fangirl lol.
"Warrior of the Dawn" was decent and for him it was a learning experience. I watched director Jeong Yoon-cheol teach him to be more subtle with his expressions.
I'm always happy when he goes back to Chungmuro because those directors can really fine tune his skills.

Sci fi is not widely popular yet in Korea so "Circle's" rating wasn't something unexpected. I'm not even sure if "Joseon X-files" made it to 1%.

I was hoping that his part in "1987" was longer but that would mean more torture which director Jang Joon-hwan is known for. I can't even re-watch "Hwayi."

I love him a lot in all his so called bad dramas especially "Royal Gambler."Gawd he was so good but I wanted to strangle the writer. He totally screwed up a great cast. That kind of bad I can ride with.

2

@kiara I like how some of the people who watched the movie thought the actor playing martyr Park Jong Chul was so good but didn't know it was Yeo Jin Goo until the final credit cos the appearance was really short.

2

As everyone knows, I am one of the few with a soft spot for the very-flawed Reunited Worlds
http://www.dramabeans.com/2018/03/best-friends-forever-reunited-friends/

but Circle is the only thing of his I've seen that I thought was objectively awesome. Admittedly, he has an extensive filmography so a lot I still haven't seen.

I absolutely loved -;)- absolute boyfriend the first time I saw it (Japanese version) and the Taiwanese one with Jiro was so sweet. Chun Jung Myung is a good choice imo, I adored his character on Cinderella's sister so I have high hopes and wish he takes the role, I think it kinda fits him, and Yeo Jin Gu as a robot? Naito is simply perfect and the story is so touching that I can't wait to see him take such a challenging role, cuz trust me Naito is a unique robot. I am just not sure how I am going to survive this story again, it is seriously amazing and touching (already said that I know but I don´t want to spoil it for those who don't know the story.

Anyways Naito has been and will always be one of my favorite drama heroes so I am happy that I can see a new version of him!! =)

I am employing all the "suspension of belief" I can muster. (And I am trying to be as tactful as I can writing this comment.) IF an actor is playing an (ageless) robot, doesn't it follow that he can be ANY age? Yeo Jin-gu (if he is the final actor in this role) is portraying a created by science being. Therefore, his 17 year age difference from Chun Jung-myung is moot. (Actually, in the drama, he may be portraying a character that is only a few years old (if we go by creation date.) Or a character that has been created to be the exact same age as Chun Jung-myung, (just with younger looking skin?) I'm not expressing this very well. What I mean is, it doesn't matter the ACTUAL age of the actor. I felt the same way when I read all the people stressing over the age difference of the goblin and his bride. (Them, "She's so much younger!!" Me, "Well, where would they find a 939-year-old immortal actress to play his love interest? It's a FANTASY!") Just so you know, I am bugged when sweet young actresses are hired to play love interests for aging actors--as a rule. But the 17 year difference in rivals doesn't bug me at all, because Yeo Jin-gu is portraying an ageless, nonhuman.

I must be the only person who liked Reunited Worlds. It was so cute and heartwarming.... it was the story of someone coming back from the dead to fix all the problems his family had developed because of his untimely death. Anyway, Yeo Jin-Gu would be perfect as the robot. They made the poor guy take off his shirt in Circle just to show it off and WHOA HE IS JACKED. Like you expect a love android to have a perfect body and he will not disappoint, PLUS he has such tremendous acting ability.

However, I don't really like the sound of how they're reworking the plot. In the Taiwanese version the rival was a neighbor/coworker who also was a techie (and all the characters seemed to be a similar age). The age gap here between Jingu and the other 2 seems weird - it'd be like adding a noona romance angle to the story.
