Jo Jung-seok, Yoon Shi-yoon offered brother roles in SBS sageuk

New drama alert! And this one is exciting on so many levels. PD Shin Kyung-soo, of Tree With Deep Roots and Six Flying Dragons fame, is helming a new sageuk for SBS. Joining him is another sageuk expert, writer Jung Hyun-min, who wrote the acclaimed Jung Do-jeon. Titled Ugeumchi, the sageuk takes place at the end of the 19th century and will focus on the Donghak Peasant Rebellion, which is credited (blamed?) for sparking the First Sino-Japanese War and strengthening Imperial Japan’s hold in Korea.

Ugeumchi will revolve around two half-brothers, and offers are currently out to Jo Jung-seok (Two Cops) and Yoon Shi-yoon (Your Honor) to headline as siblings on different sides of the conflict. If they accept, Jo Jung-seok will play what sounds like an antihero character, the illegitimate son of a notorious and wealthy government official in the town of Gobu. Born to a slave mother, Jo Jung-seok’s character is described as a poisonous snake, with sharp gazes and withering smiles. I’m so used to watching Jo Jung-seok playing likeable leads that I’d love to watch him play against type here.

The role offered to Yoon Shi-yoon, on the other hand, is predictably the opposite of Jo Jung-seok’s. If he accepts, he’ll play the legitimate, younger son of the Baek family, who studied abroad in Japan and is preparing for the national civil service exam. Described as noble and graceful in both his looks and the way he carries himself, his only perceived flaw is his family’s less-than-the-highest social status.

Given the PD and writer attached to this show, all we need are strong leads to carry the tragedy of siblings who find themselves on either side of a class conflict. Which is why I’m crossing my fingers that Jo Jung-seok and Yoon Shi-yoon accept, since they’d definitely be able to pull that off and then some.

SBS’s Ugeumchi, named after a decisive battle at the end of the Donghak Rebellion, is slated for next spring.

DO IT!

Was what I was going to comment but whoa that writer-director team up. I'm all in! Been waiting for a sageuk to watch these days. Hope they both sign up.

You know, I'm down with PD Shin Kyung-soo but I slightly favored Jang Tae-Yoo since PAINTER OF THE WIND.
They did a good job in TREE WITH DEEP ROOT and they had top actors to work with.

Oooh! It feels like a recipe for disappointment to get too attached to the idea of this particular casting with this particular plot, but I want it sooo much! I feel like someone is probably going to turn the offer down, but I'm keeping all my fingers crossed for this.

Alas, it never seems to be the dramas with the dream casting that end up being awesome. I have felt the sting of that particular brand of crushing disappointment more than once, but... but... oh my god, I want this!! So. Much.

Sounds amazing! This is a must-check-out if it happens. That's an interesting plot already and I love what this team of writer-actor(s)-director could do with it.

I trust the writers on this but I hope this is not another love war between siblings. Talking bout the female lead, there are few saeguk fairies out there I hope they get a good one.

This is probably our first conventional sageuk since JDJ. I do hope they'll cast the more veteran fairies who are now in the mid 20s - 30s.
Park Eun-bin could use a good sageuk. Han Ye-ri hasn't done a sageuk since SIX FLYING DRAGON. Jeon Hye-bin has been stuck in 2nd lead since forever. Park Bo-young was excellent in KING AND I. A full sageuk would be awesome.
There are so many of them out there...

A sageuk directed by the Six Flying Dragons director has to be a masterpiece. With Jo Jung-suk and Yoon Shi-yoon potentially on the team, I'm so hyped.

Oohh... Jo Jung-seok is going to play an antihero character? Please do it, oppa. I'm so used to him playing likeable and swoony male lead in dramas that it'll be interesting to see him bringing that tense and dark vibes he exudes in his movies.

The half-brothers feuding in a sageuk reminds me of "Queen of Seven Days". I'm hoping Yoon Shi Yoon will turn this down because I want him to star opposite Park Bo Young in "Abyss".

Asdfhjklgfsayaaaaa this is good news! @marcusnyc20 @pakalanapikake
- Yoon Shi Yoon and Jo Jung Seok. Check.
- PD & Writer. Check. Check!
- Interesting historical scenario. Check.

I liked Yoon Shi Yoon in Grand Prince though I think he does better in modern dramas. However, I can see him as a dainty nobleman who comes back from Japan dressed in modern clothes... oh wait, that sounds familiar.... Hee-Sung!! 😭

*sends smoke signal to @kiara*

I think that with better writing and directing, YSY could knock it out of the ballpark. Lee Hwi was sandbagged by Writer-nim in GRAND PRINCE and initially portrayed as a peace-at-any-price, hyper-filial mama's boy. Later, once the gloves were off, he had lots of gritty moments, was a trooper in captivity in Manchuria, and did well in the fight and polo scenes. I'd love to see him cut loose the way Joo Sang-wook did as devious elder bro Lee Kang. I'm getting whiplash as I watch ROOM NO. 9 every time I see their evil, scheming uncle, Grand Prince Yangan (Son Byung-ho) who has morphed into the crooked Prosecutor. He was a great sageuk villain. LOL!

Here's hoping there's a minimum of romance. I'm more interested in the politics. If there has to be romance, please cast age appropriate actresses who can emote well enough to keep up with these guys, dang it. After all the 10-alarm chemistry in MR. SUNSHINE and 100 DAYS MY PRINCE, please don't bother with romance if the casting is going to be half-baked.

Hi @wishfultoki, @pakalanapikake. Thanks for the shou out. Yes. I am fully onboard for Yoon Shi-yoon's next sageuk UGEUMCHI. Also I am looking forward to learning some history.
I just took a fond look back at the hijacked GRAND PRINCE thread which we used for comments during the unfortunate DB dry spell. It was a lot of fun and GP was my first YSY drama. You can look here:

Thanks for this exciting casting news on UGEUMCHI, @tipsymocha! You made my day. The prospect of a full-blown saguek warms the cockels of my heart. You had me at the pedigree of the production team: PD Shin Kyung-soo of TREE WITH DEEP ROOTS and SIX FLYING DRAGONS, and screenwriter Jung Hyun-min of JUNG DO-JEON. Sell my clothes, I'm going to heaven. ;-)

Having watched MR. SUNSHINE, it will be interesting to see how the Donghak Peasant Rebellion fits into the scheme of things. Maybe I still have REBEL:THIEF WHO STOLE THE PEOPLE on the brain. I can imagine the possibility of an eventual meeting of the minds between the two brothers. Younger bro could come to recognize how the system is rigged against half-yangban despite the official lip service to meritocracy. He could turn into Gil-hyun to his hyung's latter-day Hong Gil-dong. Even if he doesn't, there were already enough traitors in high places willing to sell out Joseon's sovereignty for personal gain that an honest civil servant would have despaired.

I'll have to check out Jo Jung-seok in the films THE FACE READER and FATAL ENCOUNTER as I have yet to see him in sageuks. Must rectify that oversight pronto. I can only imagine that he will do a terrific job in this role. Perhaps we'll be graced with a sympathetic characterization of an antihero a la Lee Dong-gun's Yeonsangun in SEVEN DAY QUEEN, or along the line of Kim Ji-suk's equally nuanced take on the same historical figure in REBEL.

Yoon Si-yoon did well in MIRROR OF THE WITCH / SECRET HEALER. In GRAND PRINCE, he extinguished his happy-go-lucky charisma and hinted at a dark side that he managed to keep in check in order to survive at court before he was double-crossed. Just because he starts out as a privileged scholar is no guarantee that he remains one, or that he doesn't chuck his halo along the way. It would be epic to see him play against type as well as Jo Jung-seok. I bet the two of them will have a blast in these roles.

I can't wait to hear about the rest of the cast. Is it too much to hope for Jang Hyuk to grace it with his presence?

Hi @pakalanapikake. LOL at:

Sell my clothes, I'm going to heaven. ;-)

I always enjoy your descriptions of the previous work for actors. It gives me info on many dramas I am unaware of.
O/T but along those lines, I am planning my kdrama watching for the end of the year. With FOX BRIDE STAR finishing TWELVE NIGHTS will be the only live drama that I am watching. In December I will be traveling in Germany for 10 days so that will eliminate any kdrama viewing. I am going to pass on the new drama cycle and try to work in one or two dramas that I missed this year. The one drama I want to definitely work in is LIVE which I believe you really enjoyed. Also you recently mentioned watching YSY's ROMANCE FULL OF LIFE (2017) a 3/6 episode drama which I have not seen.
I came across this which I think seals the deal for a watch:

Hi, @marcusnyc20 Bong-soo. Aw, thanks. I try to put in a good word for actors and shows I've enjoyed, especially if it provides another data point in the wake of less-successful productions.

ROMANCE FULL OF LIFE is doggone cute, and very much like BAD PAPA, but set earlier in life. That is such a classic animated GIF. YSY is cute as a button -- which he better ditch before getting embroiled in the Donghak Rebellion. ;-)

Yes, do watch LIVE. You'll have the advantage of not having to wait a week for the subtitles. It is a wonderful show, but gritty as heck. Hell Joseon to the max. I loved the music to bits, and posted it on my fan wall back during the original run.

Where in Germany are you headed? You're in luck that you'll be there for the Christmas fairs (Christkindlmarkt) during Advent. Hamburg had a big one when I was there, and it's still going strong. Be sure to warm yourself up with Glühwein (mulled red wine with spices and citrus -- a hot version of sangria that takes the chill off) and Glögg, its Swedish cousin, if you're up in the north. For the folks back home, load up on Lebkuchen (a kissin' cousin of gingerbread), marzipan (Nuremberg and Lübeck are famed for their versions, both very tasty), and fancy cookies traditional at this time of year. Safe travels. ;-)

I'm just gonna have to die and go to heaven! Writer Jung Hyun-min wrote one of the best conventional sageuk!!!! I have been praying for a sageuk from him since JUNG DO-JEON ended which was a feast for history fans.
If anyone knows politics well, past and present it would be writer Jung. Intriguing on screen and not repetitive and boring.
Thank you drama gods!!! Icing on the cake is the casting of Jo Jung-seok. He is my fave chameleon actor beside Jeong Bo-seok.

@juniper I hope you'll be back too!

Hi @kiara. That is high praise for Writer Jung. Like @johnb John mentions above all 50 subbed episodes of Jeong Do Jeon are available. I have found it on my go to alternate site. I would love to watch it. 50 episodes are a stumbling block unless I watch it on weekends like it originally aired back in 2014. JDJ's wiki page is very interesting and the production notes are fascinating. Those interested can take a look here:

I just wish that they made the younger brother the evil one... hahhahaha I kinda like to see Yoon Shi Yoon with that kind of role.. where I get to despise him because he's doing his acting job too well... also, can we please just leave the ROMANCE part, just pure brotherly rivalry and politics?? I've had enough of brothers fighting to win the affection of the female lead.. to cliche please...The writer and the director are a PLUS FACTOR... This will be on my Top 3 k-drama in 2019!

Yes. Even the name of the brothers sounds the same.. but with ONE BIG difference! NO UGLY STUPID LEAD ACTRESS WHO CANT ACT to ruin it! Hope the lead actress to be cast will be someone good and not that disgusting other one, or the likes of her.. they will drown with the acting prowess of both these charming actors, esp JJS's sharp stare!
