Woo Do-hwan to join Yang Se-jong in JTBC’s sageuk, My Country

Actor Woo Do-hwan (The Great Seducer, Mad Dog) will be joining Yang Se-jong (Thirty But Seventeen, Temperature of Love) in new JTBC sageuk, My Country.

There isn’t a lot of information about the story yet, but it is said to be set in a tumultuous time in history and will center around three people who ultimately struggle to hold onto love.

In the drama, Woo Do-hwan plays the character of Nam Sun-ho. He excels in both scholarship as well as martial arts, and dreams of completing the military service examinations. However, he’s an illegitimate son born to a slave class woman and a noble man which means his path in life is rocky. When his father experiences a corruption scandal, Woo Do-hwan ultimately gives up on his dreams.

Yang Se-jong confirmed his casting a while back and will play Seo Hwi. He and Woo Do-hwan’s character start off as best friends. But a misunderstanding later causes conflict and the two end up falling out with each other.

Writing for My Country is Chae Seung-dae, who was part of the writing team for Age of Feeling and Master-God of Noodle. Directing is PD Kim Jin-won of Just Between Lovers, Wonderful Season and Nice Guy.

I’m intrigued by the director because I loved how Nice Guy was shot, even if the story wasn’t always sound, and I’ve heard a lot of praise for Just Between Lovers. It’s still on my “to watch” list though, which just keeps growing longer and longer. I’ll have to add My Country now as well. Anyone have a time turner they can spare?

My Country is currently being planned to air in the latter half of 2019 on JTBC.

Having two of the most amazing new actors of the new generation act together is really a dream and even more with all the angst that comes with friends turned enemies,so just please give them characters to work with as they have the versatility for it!!!Who will i even root now,My heart!!!...Not to positive with the writer as seen for the credentials...I know many more swing making and idea looking at the PD but i always look first at the writer and till now this one didn't give me much to it based on he previous projects but hey,i wish i'll be amazed as Yang Se Jong mostly has great projects....

Thanks for the heads-up, @wishfultoki. Methinks the WDH&KMJ Nameless Fan Club might do well to commence building an ark. When it rains, it pours. If this keeps up, we'll have a deluge of sageuks. We'll also need to keep our heads above water for when WDH's film, THE DIVINE FURY, premieres later in 2019. ;-)

These two don't have much experience in sageuks like Yoo-jung and So-hyun. These girls can do sageuks in their sleep.

Yes JTBC has done sagueks in the past: Mirror of the Witch, (beautifully shot, though the casting left a lot to be desired) Maids, Cruel Palace – War of Flowers are a few examples of the sagueks they've done in the past.

Toki, JTBC has done a couple of epic sageuks when they first launched. QUEEN IN-SOO and WAR OF THE FLOWERS by writer Jung-Ha-yeon.

I think they went with short fusion sageuks after that because they are less expensive and they don't have a sageuk set like KBS and MBC.

That is true that experience wise they can't be compared with Yoo Jung and So Hyun,i meant more like how they are seen(like how the two girls were seen unintentional as rivals),they as well are like the most shining as they had their breakthrough at the same time and are kinda seen as "rivals" if it makes sense...I don't think the drama will go into super serious stuff and there is no issue if u aren't into them,it's your opinion and likes so all for that

Glad that Kim Jin Won will helm this project but sad none of these two together with this writer can make me stay for any sageuk. Unless if they cast Kwak Dong Yeon or someone at his calibre to complete the main leads' trio. And please save our sageuk fairies from this drama as well.

I have dropped Mama Fairy unfortunately. Moon Chae Won honestly should join something like Asadal. I got that she might wanted to try something different but the writing doesn't give her any justice.

We can just hope on PD Kim's magic to bring the best out of these rookie sageuk actors. If they are up for more rising actors, I hope they will cast Kwak Dong Yeon or Lee Taeri. They are talented and have good experiences in sageuk.

I'm so looking forward for Yeo Jin Gu's sageuk in January by the way. :)

They are not rivals and never were, it is the fans picking teams and the stupid media trying to make rivals out of them. I have read interviews and they have always respected each other and since My Country, they have become real friends in real life. Let enjoy their work together and separately and not make their friendship difficult but having to hear crap out them competing when all they want to do is do the best job they can in the projects they do.

@ndlessjoie mugyuljoie,

Methinks we could expect an epic bromance from these two if MAD DOG and THIRTY BUT SEVENTEEN -- and the kitchen crew in TEMPERATURE OF LOVE -- are anything to judge by.

Will they both be half-yangban, one of whom loses hope and abandons his dreams while the other persists? Might they be half-brothers?

I'm especially curious about the drama's title. It makes me think of a modern nation-state rather than the ancient land and its spirits. We'll just have to wait for the teasers. ;-)

@cherryinbloom,

Maybe WDH will play a brainy antihero akin to Jan Gebauer in MAD DOG. He did a nice job as Ko Nan-gil's former loan shark first mate in SWEET STRANGER AND ME. Or perhaps YSJ will take another murderous walk on the wild side as he did in DUEL. I'm curious as to who the female lead will be. I just hope we don't have to endure a love triangle a la THE KING IN LOVE, or unrecognizable long-lost kid sisters. ;-)

Yes, WDH is the second lead but a main character so he is in it a lot but Yang Se Jong is the lead main male. I loved this drama and both did an amazing job and became friends in real life just like WDH said they would in an article a year ago when he said he would like to meet Se Jong and thinks they would become friends. The bromance was off the charts.

Thank you, @tccolb, for another installment of exciting casting news. I'm totally slipping my clutch with all the announcements of forthcoming sageuks now that the drought is breaking. Christmas has come early. ;-)

Manseh! Yet another pair of faves will be romping around in hanbok. I assume the story will be set in Joseon because of the half-yangban issue with Woo Do-hwan's character, Nam Sun-ho. Since Yang Se-jong's Seo Hwi is his best friend, I expect they are on the same social rung. It will be interesting to see WDH hacking and slashing in Joseon garb. YSJ played the younger version of Song Seung-heon's painterly royal in SAIMDANG, LIGHT'S DIARY, and was quite dashing, both on and off a horse. I hope that they have rested and paced themselves to avoid exhaustion, as both have been busy this year. It's particularly confusing as Woo Do-hwan and Park Seo-joon have a film premiering in 2019, THE DIVINE FURY – which includes yet another exorcist priest, LOL!

I was impressed with PD-nim's work on JUST BETWEEN LOVERS, the only show of his I've seen. I've got my fingers crossed that Writer-nim is up to snuff. Truth to tell, I seem to recall reading Beanie lamentations that NOODLE OF REVENGE got flaky towards the end. I didn't watch the show. I certainly don't want to toss my laptop in high dudgeon if MY COUNTRY hatches out as a turkey. Time to place a few more SubWeys on the altar. ;-)

Just to keep score:

2019 Sageuks, AFAIK as of 12/14/18

At first blush I thought this article referred to UGEUMCHI, set in late Joseon during the Donghak Peasant Rebellion. Nope. That one stars Yoon Si-yoon and Jo Jung-seok – in his first sageuk. It will air sometime in the spring.
http://www.dramabeans.com/2018/11/jo-jung-seok-yoon-shi-yoon-offered-brother-roles-in-sbs-sageuk

First up in the new year is THE CROWNED CLOWN with Yeo Jin-goo portraying Gwanghaegun and his doppelgänger of humble origins. Lee Se-young (Zombie Girl Buja in HWAYUGI) will play the Queen. The show has had various working titles: THE MAN WHO BECAME KING; THE QUEEN'S MAN; and MASQUERADE.
http://asianwiki.com/The_Crowned_Clown

Then there's Jung Il-woo's post-service comeback, Joseon-era sageuk HATCH / HAECHI / HAETAE, planned by SBS for a February launch.
http://asianwiki.com/Hatch_(Korean_Drama)

Lee Junho and Jung So-min are set to commence filming sageuk movie GIBANG BACHELOR / GIBANGDORYEONG this month for release in 2019, according to AsianWiki's recent blog post.

@pakalanapikake <3.

ASADAL will be our first Go-joseon sageuk irc. JUMONG was the closest to that era and the beginning of the 3 Kingdoms era. Infact, more than half of JUMONG was about the ‎descendants and tribes from Gojoseon era, pre-Goguryeo.
LAND OF THE WIND came after JUMONG with King Yuri who was JUMONG's son.

Song Ji-na's LEGEND OF THE FOUR GODS started off with the mythical story of Dangun, the first king of Go-joseon. This would be a great intro for ASADAL.

I think JUMONG and THE LEGEND would be the sageuks to rewatch before ASADAL.

Mr X the sageuk guru back in the days wrote this article. There is no mention of any Go-joseon sageuk even as far back as early 1980s.

I knew you would be on top of MY COUNTRY with Yang Se-jong and Woo Do-hwan. I like both these actors so count me in on this one.
Sidebar. The writer is connected to MASTER--GOD OF NOODLES (2016). MGN was my 8th kdrama and the first one I live watched. I had just signed on with Viki. With your memory even now you could probably write up a nice synopsis Not me. From what I can recall (which is not much) I guess it was kind of a mess but I remember a couple of things. The food looked good and in the cast (as friends from their orphanage days) were Lee Sang-yeob who played the sweet Tae-ha and Kim Jae-young who recently gave a fine performance as brother Moo Yeon in his first sageuk 100 DAYS MY PRINCE.

Welcome back, @marcusnyc20 Bong-soo! I now just spotted a couple of your thumbs-ups. Actually, WishfulT is the one who sent me a smoke signal re: MY COUNTRY. It came clean out of the blue. -- In OT this morning I posted news of Junho's GIBANG BACHELOR film and UGEUMCHI with YSY and Jo Jung-seok. I'm going to need one of those airline flight arrival/departure boards for ease of updating. Sheesh!

I didn't actually watch MGN. Saya did a first-episode recap, and I recall reading that. In fact, I re-read it today, and was surprised to see that she gave "nameless" as the meaning for Moo-myung, which I had been trying to dredge up for use by the Woo Do-Hwan & Kim Min-Jae Nameless Fan Club -- established for survivors of the Show That Dare Not Speak Its Name But Whose Initials Are GS. We're all Bozos Moo-myungs on this bus. Details on my fan wall. See what happens when you leave NYC for a short spell?! I somehow got promoted to Fan Club President last weekend or so. -- Thanks for that bit of casting trivia from MGN re: Lee Sang-yeob and Kim Jae-young! (Hwaiting, Moo Yeon in 100 DAYS MY PRINCE!) -- Laters. ;-)

Congratulations @pakalanapikake on your achievement. You recently reached Beanie level: Fan club president. (Think voice of John Houseman in the old Smith Barney commercial). This honor wasn't bestowed but
YOU EARNED IT!
A couple of quick comments. First, re GS.
I did not watch. At the time I did not think it was a good project for WDH but I think I commented something along the lines that at his age it must very difficult to turn down a project if you are offered a lead or co-lead. MAD DOG is the only thing I have seen WDW in and YSG better watch out. WDW is a scene stealer.
Second. Junho in the film GIBANG BACHELOR. (Kind of sorry it won't be a 16 episode drama.)
I am chuckling to myself trying to figure out what is going on here. Here is the entire synopsis from AsianWiki (link to follow):

Heo Saek (Lee Joon-Ho) is a lovely young man. His mother was a gisaeng and he grew up at the gibang (place where gisaeng work). He becomes the first male gisaeng in Joseon, a time when women suffered from oppression. Hae-Won (Jung So-Min) is a beautiful woman with a progressive way of thinking. They try to find true love.

Are we talking something like this:

https://i.pinimg.com/originals/9a/64/5b/9a645b44de3a461f5e968eb3847c87d5.jpg

I guess we have to wait and see.

Erratum:

UGEUMCHI is Jo Jung-seok's first sageuk drama, but it's not his first historical rodeo. He won two Best Supporting Actor awards for his role in THE FACE READER in 2013. He played a major supporting role as an assassin in THE FATAL ENCOUNTER. JJS's sageuk movie experience increases my anticipation for this drama whose timeline overlaps that of MR. SUNSHINE. ;-)
