Triple: Episode 6

I think Episode 6 was the best episode so far, although I haven’t seen 7 yet so I can’t speak to this week’s episodes. Dramas that have “themed” episodes can go either way, because if a writer takes the theme too far, it can be overbearing in forcing the events to match the theme. I thought The World They Live In often erred too much on that side of excess. On the other hand, I’m liking the way the skating-related themes are being drawn to Triple’s plot, which draw certain parallels but haven’t (yet) gone too far in making those connections.

SONG OF THE DAY

Biuret – “하루는” (A Day / haru neun). The “haru” in this title is also Haru’s name in the drama, as she explains in this episode. [ Download ]

Interview from the cast of Triple

This interview was released just prior to the airing of Episode 5 last Wednesday. Each cast member is featured, and while nobody goes terribly in depth, one gets a sense of the camaraderie between the actors, which is always fun to see (and read about).

There are a few super-mild spoiler-ish details, for hardcore spoilerphobes. (Nothing specific, but hints are made about the direction some relationships will take. Just a warning!)

“I don’t know. I just want to steal her away!”

The weather is hot enough to make one sweat even while standing still, but the view is beautiful outside the large window of Shin Hwal’s home and Bond Factory office. Youth is like that, too. Once that time passes, everything becomes difficult and painful, but watching on television, there is no more beautiful or brilliant time. Episode 5 hasn’t yet aired for MBC’s Triple, which is directed by Lee Yoon-jung, who knows better than anyone how to capture the brightest moments of youth with respect. The public’s reaction isn’t that hot yet, but mania fans are already showing a deep interest in the PD’s particular sensitive directing and unique characters. The six actors of this drama met in front of the Hongdae set location on June 24. Their careers and ages are all different, but the passion inside their hearts bubbles over in the same way; here is a new interview with the three couples.

Triple: Episode 5

Another cute episode with a lot of cute scenes. I think Triple is starting to settle into its groove — it’s not all the way there yet, but storylines are starting to flow a little more, I think. It’s also a pleasure to watch a drama that is refreshing and breezy, with a little bit of conflict but not a huge melodramatic dose of angst. If you want the antithesis of “makjang” — those dramas with exaggerated, overwrought, convoluted plots — Triple would be it.

SONG OF THE DAY

Corinne Bailey Rae – “Call Me When You Get This.” I don’t know yet if I’m going to compile a list of Triple songs, but this one was used in a scene toward the end. The reason I may not is that so far, the music has been very pleasing, but not necessarily integral to the story. At least, not in the way that music was so key in Coffee Prince or Soulmate. But it’s still early, so there may be time for that to come. [ Download ]

Triple: Episode 4

Overall, I am really enjoying this show and appreciate the casting, but I think I’m having a problem with Su-in (or is the issue with Lee Hana?). I haven’t decided whether it’s purely a character thing or an acting thing, but if Su-in were one of the seven dwarves, she’d be Mopey. But at least the rest of the cast makes up for it with their natural, joking dynamic and refreshing ease with one another.

짙은 (Zitten) – “곁에” (By my side). This is not my favorite 짙은 song, but it’s the one played in the opening scene. [ Download ]

Triple: Episode 3

Triple is shaping up to be an adorable drama. In addition to its Coffee Prince similarities, it’s also sorta like My Sweet Seoul in its charm, but with more pep. Like The World They Live In, each episode is titled with a theme, but unlike World, Triple doesn’t overdo the narration or get too self-indulgent with its Insight of the Day.

True, if you didn’t like Coffee Prince or My Sweet Seoul, maybe Triple isn’t for you either. But I find the characters really entertaining, the pace is enjoyable, and the drama keeps a smile on my face.
