Kim Hyun-joong cast in remake of Kimi wa petto

I say this without snarkiness (a quality I think is growing far too overrated these days anyway): One would have thought that idol singer Kim Hyun-joong‘s stiff, uncomfortable acting debut in Boys Before Flowers earlier this year would have convinced people to STOP casting him in high-profile projects, but alas ’tis not the case. He has just been cast as the lead in the film adaptation of popular Japanese manhwa-turned-drama Kimi wa petto, or You’re My Pet. The j-dorama aired in 2003 on TBS.

Like Boys Before Flowers, the Japanese original starred the popular idol-actor Matsumoto Jun (opposite Koyuki). The romantic drama unfolds as a woman fashion-magazine editor who is perfect in looks and talents comes to live with a good-looking young man. She and the man, who is first taken in and affectionately called her “pet,” gradually fall in love. The female lead is still currently casting.

The contract has yet to be finalized, according to Kim’s management, but should be made official soon. The film will begin shooting as soon as the casting is complete, and aims for a release date next year.

(I really thought Kim Hyun-joong would go the way of Se7en, as in, he’d realize that he was sorely limited in the acting arena and focus on his music. Coupled with his seemingly indifferent attitude toward acting in the first place — he had to be persuaded to take the BBF role by management who were eager to heighten his name recognition — I figured he’d fade from acting, not be cast as the lead in another high-profile remake. Again, I mean this without sarcasm, but I sincerely hope he hies himself to some intensive acting training if he wants a career in the field.)

I know I shouldn't judge before seeing it, but allow me to vent:

Why is he ruining another character? He'll ruin momo!

Ahem...please prove me wrong Hyun Joong. Please.

Really mixed feeling here......excited to see KHJ's pretty face on screen, but not too enthu about his stiff acting......I may give it a try and see if he's improved from his much criticized acting in BOF.
I guess wether I watch it will also depend on the female lead casted too.....if the remaining cast seems interesting and fresh enough, why not?!?

@heya
You think so too? ^___^ I love Heechul but I'm seriously not being biased here. When I got to know him better I instantly thought of Momo LoL.

But I think Min Ki would also do a great job, Hongki could also act the part but I think he looks too young for the role?

I just can't imagine Hyun Joong as Momo T_T Not Momo please T_T

Hmm... no disrespect but if all you know of KHJ is from what you've seen on BOF, then I can see how this would be a disaster waiting to happen in your minds...

I don't think he did a terrible job in BOF but he was definitely acting mainly because the character was so far removed from his real self. And I actually enjoyed his Ji Hoo as compared to say...the taiwanese version of BOF or the Japanese version.

I think he'd be totally suited to this role because his actual character is closer to the quirky, cute, and slightly spacey....if anything, he wouldn't have to try to act because he'd probably identify with the character a lot more and it's a role a lot closer to his real life persona (from what I see from variety shows).

And younger guy and older woman? Like some others have commented... Go watch him on We Got Married with Hwang Bo... totally hilarious...he can totally pull off a comic role without even trying too hard. Anyway, he's an idol star so I guess it doesn't really matter whether he flops or not...people will still love him...*LOL

I can so see him playing this role with better success than BOF! Looking forward to seeing how he does.

I liked the drama and I've thought of different Korean actors that would fit (Lee Minwoo mostly for the hair and hyper personality, not to mention dance skill) but never once would i have thought of this guy. I've seen only parts of BOF and I wasnt impressed with his acting at all. I hope he can live up to this character because it's such a fun story.

I didn't see the original, but now i don't plan to watch the remake either.
KHJ totally killed it (in the bad way) in BOF for me, My sis and I still have hella fun imitating his (non-existent) facial expressions in BOF. =)

No. Just; er, no. I'll stab my eyes out before I watch it. Momo is actually an extremely dificult part to play, and although I think he did a good job there were even parts that MatsuJun had trouble with. He got the playful, quirky, funny part down, he could play the pet really well, but what made the manga SO interesting was the tension between Momo the pet and the real desires of Momo the man, and how Sumire had to sort out her conflicting feelings for both "halves" of his character.
The jdrama really played down that aspect - in fact, they changed the end to totally get away from it, I think because perhaps they just couldn't go there; it was more comfortable to stay with Momo as the cutesy pet. A film could really get into the more serious relationship dynamic - but no, not with that casting choice. This sounds like Kimi wa Petto with a 12-year-old audience in mind. Sigh. Did they maybe get their manga mixed up? How about Hana Kimi? (Hey, one word is the same...) I can totally see KHJ as that lead.

Oh, geez. Forget the problem with KHJ's acting, I just wish they'd stop remaking Japanese manga/dramas! Korea produces perfectly good dramas on their own, so why the current trend towards remaking everything Japan's ever done? The Taiwanese drama industry has done it already, and look at some of the messes they made of it. Recently, it's like a bunch of people up and thought, "Hey, let's remake everything that's done well on Japanese TV screens!"

@julie 7- I totally agree with you. This is such a quirky, off beat role. I loved Matsumoto Jun in it because it was pretty different from Domyoji for him. And I loved the woman they picked to play opposite him.

I can't see Kim Hyun-joong in this. At. All. No offense to him but I hope he gets some sort of personality transplant or acting lessons before taking this on.

woah, was he really "forced?" wow, I didn't know he was initially indifferent about his role in BOF..
I saw him in that weird sitcom where he was a golfer (back in the day when I used to worship SS501.. LOL), and in that he was worse (with his stiff-ness) than in BOF O_O;;
haha it's so weird because he usually had a pretty up beat personality so if he just USED that when he acted.. it could be helpful :/ (well for this drama it seems.. what a turn in character!)
I've never heard about this j-drama.. but It'll be interesting to hear more about it!

but seriously, I think it would be really hard for a lot of actors to top MatuJun's acting in Kimi Wa Petto, and Kim Hyun-joong is not the best there is...really I think he won't be able to pull off Momo...

My first reaction was What?! NO!!!... Why are they remaking Kimi wa Petto at all?

Its such a cute and quirky jdrama. It should stay as a jdrama.

With KHJ, I'm a little torn. I agree his acting BOF wasn't great, but he's great in We Got Married. I just just started watching it and I am hooked. I love it to bits.

So I don't know. But I wouldn't ming seeing JGS in it. I can just picture JGS in that scene where Matsujun is on his knees with a cheeky smile and his paw out. hehehe

But KHJ is really kool and funny in We got Married, so im torn..

Kimi wa petto is one of a few enjoyable jdorama of my liking lists. I mean I'd love to see a korean remake version but why not cast someone else who can show a broader range of emotion as needed for the role?

Matsumoto Jun is did a really good job in the show pulling off as cute-puppy looking guy. +_+" I can't really see KHJ as puppy-like....

>_> Let's hope for the best.

oh no! :( Kimi wa petto is one of my favourites.. It has a very special place in my heart.. when I first read the premise of the story, Momo's character seems like a very difficult role. I can't imagine how anyone can pull it off. But MatsuJun did and I fell in love with him even more *sigh* hehehe..

I've only seen KHJ on BOF so I might not be the best judge. But... but.. I really can't picture him playing Momo. Well, let's just wait and see I guess..

@skelly: I totally agree with you.

I've never watched the J drama but I love the manga so much.
And as far as I know, Momo is a very deep character. Cute, funny,... is a small part (and easy do act) of Momo.
The human Momo is completely a playboy, a man with past, desire and dream.
So of course, the's no way KHJ can act the role.

...even his appearance doesn't fit.

Yes his acting really needs polishing. I think he got cast because of his popularity and they need that for ratings. I was rather dissapointed whenever he was chosen over Lee Min Ho for acting awards and popularity for the BOF project. Lee Min Ho was probably too natural in his acting that people dun knw how good he is.

Hopefully this time round, his emotions will come out more. I think his problem with acting is that he is too cool a guy evident in how he conduct himself interviews. Most good actors tend to be more dramatic or emotional in their personality.

Oh.
I'm sorry to offend anyone at all, but I don't think KHJ is particularly handsome, a particularly good singer, or a particularly good actor. I think he was decent in BOF because Ji-hoo had to be a really hidden sorta person (though probably not as hidden as KHJ made him seem). The problem is they're giving him roles that have already been established...
Oguri Shun as Hanazawa Rui... i LOVED him. That guy can pull off the cool (as well as in Hana Kimi...)
MatsuJun in Kimi wa petto... that guy's proved he can do quirky.
Personally, I just can't see KHJ as "quirky."
But I do wish him the best of luck... I don't want this drama to become laughing stock. If KHJ is fortunate, this will turn into another huge wave that he can ride on, like BOF, where it doesn't really matter if he's a good/bad actor.

@ 29 Jasmin -- LOL. That picture is so FREAKING FUNNY. Reminds me of that one time Makino calls Domyouji a dog and a puppy is superimposed next to his face like a comparison shot.

Anyways, HYD-Korean was a bit of a let-down (except for that single glorious pool catharsis moment in 25), so I'm not expecting much for this one. That's probably best; if KHJ ends up wowing us, all the better for him. If he doesn't, then I can probably say "Yeah...I saw that coming..."

Bad acting aside, he can be my pet any day :P

I agree with many of you... He probably won't have to act too much since the 4Dness of the character would be close to his own... definitely got cast because of WGM's sucessful pairing of him and HB.

Hope they don't ruin the original... I like the Jap version even tho I'm not a big Matsu fan... this drama got a lot to live up to, despite the low expectations we are seeing here.

And poor female lead... they must be having a headache picking the right woman who will win the audience approval and not attract a ton of hateful responses from fans, which will probably make her life miserable. With an idol/pretty boy like this, some fans are really just crazy and things could go to extremes either way (really approve or really hate) All I can say is - Good luck!

Although I can totally see how Jang Geun-Suk will rule this role, as I've comment a long time ago about BBF, he's making very wise choices not to involve himself in these remakes or dramas that draw the hype from a previously famous work -
Because He doesn't need that... he's established enough to carry an Original drama like YB now... and should continue doing that!

Who cares? Kim Hyun Joong is in it... I'd watch it even if my eyes bleed. just as long as i get to see his beautiful face and smile. I know he's not the best actor but he got better. And that's what actors do. they get better by acting in more movies and dramas. GeunSuk is okay. I like his movies and other dramas but in you're beautiful... he just seems stiff or over the top. And if you think about it... you're beautiful is not even a very good. It's way over dramatic over little things that aren't even that big of a deal and it moves too fast.. one minute she's a nun next minute she's a boy in love with another boy. not that i don't like it, i still watch it.

The producers must be blind or suicide for choosing KHY, he can't act at all, he killed HYD for me (one of the jdrama i love beside Kimi wa petto, Matsumoto Jun was brilliant). I absolutely loved him in We got married with Hwang Bo but seriously i can already feel the dissapoinment.

Is this new confirmed yet? They could probably cast another actor if the criticim is bad??

This role is an extremely tricky and difficult role to pull off, even for a veteran actor. The actor has to be able to teeter between being adorable like a pet and yet, manly enough to establish a female and male relationship PLUS exude sophistication and sensitivity.

I had hesitations about Jun Matsumoto playing the role. However, it was a pleasant surprise to find that he was actually very impressive in the role.

This role would be a killer for anyone without strong acting skills. And, it could turn out to be the comedy of the year, instead of the romance of the year.

I was hoping heechul would get the part. atleast he acts a bit better and he's all funny outwardly, but he's got that serious side he doesn't show in public as an 'idol' (lol) so i'm ok if it was heechul playing the complex and adorable momo.

EEEWWW!!!! I have never heard such horrible casting!!! It's so off the mark. Kim Hyun Joong would have to show a variety of emotions as a pet (if he is taking that character), I can't even imagine how he'll look as a pet. MatsuJun sorta fit the role, he's weird enough to, I'm no Kimi Wa Petto fan though, the plot weirds me out but I have watched bits of it... SS501 fans must be thrilled.

I, for one, jumped of excitement to learn that he was casted in a movie.

I'am a fan of his, but not because of BOF. I became a fan after BOF while watching WGM (In episode 26 of WGM there's a particular scene where he acted very cute).

In real life, KHJ has a very quirky and chipper personality. There are dozens of clips of reality shows, variety shows and interviews in youtube that he's been on with the other members of SS501 that can attest to that (search for 'Chunderella').

He's not a trained actor and the filming of BOF was rushed. Even for actors who had done well in previous dramas or movies can falter under similar circumstances (Remember Jung Il Woo and Yoon Eun Hye in My Fair Lady?) It usually takes several weeks or months to shoot a movie, whereas on TV, they can't afford to do that due to schedule restrictions.

Studios want to make money with commercial movies with popular actors for young audiences (I watched a lot of teen movies as an adolescent) so that they can finance artsy films for sophisticated audiences. Kim Hyun Joong can be a boxoffice draw. He got over 25 million votes from netizens as most popular actor at the Seoul International Drama Awards last September; way ahead of Lee Jun Ki, who got second place.

Let's give the kid a chance and not be too harsh for only his acting in BOF, if that's the only thing you've seen him in.

Good luck KHJ!

in some interviewed he said that Ji Hoo is not him at all, in words, style or expression. He said he is totaly up side down with Ji Hoo character. He is more like him in WGM. So, may be this is a chance for him to prove that he is not Ji Hoo, that he is cute, bubbly, funny and etc..... Let's give him a chance to explore what he is, if he is not Ji Hoo. KHJ, fighting!!!

when i heard Kimi Wa Petto being remade into KDrama, my mind immediately goes to Lee Minki, i can totally see him being the adorable/quirky/slightly strange Momo...
i haven't watched WGM at all (any pair for that matter), but i believe WGM is NOT a drama, it's a scripted variety show, I know the 4D of KHJ, i've seen some of his interviews, but in BOF his acting made me cringe sometimes

well if the PD really want this casting continues, KHJ really need to polish up his acting skills and they really need to find an amazing actress as the main lead...

I CANNOT believe there are people in the K-entertainment industry who think that KHJ has earned the chance to act in ANOTHER high-profile drama remake. Honestly, I can name TEN actors who deserved this role more than KHJ right now.
Un-freaking-believable.

And to think that an actor as awesome and superbly talented as Jang Geun Suk had to do numerous dramas and movies before he was cast as a lead character in one...it boggles my mind!

Somewhere in Japan, Matsumoto Jun is shaking his head in disbelief....LOLL....

As much as I enjoyed BOF for what it was (and I did, with the exception that I thought that it needed some serious editing in the middle to tighten it up), and as pretty as KHJ is, that's a role that needs some serious acting talent. Can anyone here see him bounding up to his "owner" at the door? Didn't think so.

I'm trying to visualize any of the current younger men who could pull that role off - both the human and pet side of the character - and it's a toughie. I actually quite like SS501, but I'm a fan of the guy harmony genre from Motown to today.

(And no my name has nothing to do with Kimi wa Petto, I've been Momo for 45 years, first Momo-chan, then Momo-san - stupid nicknames stick with you for your whole life. )
