Sungkyunkwan Scandal: Episode 13

I’m back! I hope you readers enjoyed the little treat that girlfriday presented to us as much as I did! I’m feeling refreshed from my mini recap vacay and ready to get back in the game with this awesome episode. It’s official. I’m shipping the Yong-ha+Guh-ro bromance all the way. Not that I don’t love the other pairings, because I adore all of them, but the bromance has my yaoi imagination running wild and I love it!

On to the recap!

I thoroughly enjoy Sun-joon’s Engrrrish.

LESSON 13 RECAP

Cho-sun’s peck on Sun-joon’s cheek shocks everyone at the table—especially Hyo-eun, who momentarily forgets herself and has a jealous fit until Sun-joon’s surprise brings her back to her façade, and she feigns a faint. Cho-sun reassures her that a straight arrow like Sun-joon isn’t enough to tempt her. She was just being spiteful because her beloved Yoon-shik couldn’t take his eyes off Hyo-eun.

Cho-sun asks the forgiveness of her rudeness and leaves with Yoon-hee following after her. In fact, Cho-sun knows exactly who Yoon-hee actually likes and instead of being angry that her love is unrequited, she’s worried for Yoon-hee:

“I’m more worried about you. To want someone who can’t be yours…being hurt while also hurting the other. Even so, you can’t abandon your feelings and so every day you find yourself lost in hell. That’s what first love is.”

The idea leaves Yoon-hee pensive and she returns to the table to apologize to Sun-joon and Hyo-eun for the disturbance but Sun-joon dismisses her and the terrible angst begins! Yoon-hee’s classmates see that she’s feeling blue and accompany her to some drinks, but quickly regret the decision as she drowns her sorrows away with alcohol.

Sun-joon drinks in frustration also while keeping an eye on an increasingly inebriated Yoon-hee as she loses her composure. He wants to go over to her but of course our kdrama hero does the complete opposite of what his heart wants and tells Hyo-eun he’ll walk her home.

Yoon-hee’s classmates also take the opportunity to ditch. Guh-ro overhears the escapees’ conversations about Yoon-shik’s heartbreak over Cho-sun and amused at the idea, he goes to pick her sloppy mess up. (Oh, and of course Sun-joon stands as witness.)

As Guh-ro carries Yoon-hee back to the dorms on his back, the most adorable(and heartbreaking) misunderstanding ensues when Yoon-hee pounds his chest and complains: “You bastard.”

Guh-ro: “What?”
Yoon-hee: “Even when others cursed you, to me you were such a thankful person…I’ve always only received from you. You don’t even know how I feel…How could you…”
Guh-ro: “Are you… are you really calling your godly senior a bastard?”

He chuckles, I die.

Guh-ro lays Yoon-hee down to sleep but quickly runs out when her unsuspecting sleeping face gets too much for him to handle. (Squeal). Outside, he meets Sun-joon and demands to know what he’s doing: “What were you doing while he drank himself to that state? Weren’t you even worried?”

Sun-joon retorts coldly, “Why should I need to worry about that? If you’re so worried for him, then you can take care of him.” Taken aback by his response, Guh-ro grabs Sun-joon’s collar but Sun-joon delivers the final blow, “I never want to hear the name Kim Yoon-shik from your mouth again.”

King Jeong-jo receives requests for the Red Messenger to be brought to justice—as of late, he’s gone haywire, murdering guards and stealing the riches of the people. He’s also pointed his next target to be Un-jong-ga—but Jeong-jo is not fooled, finding the Red Messenger’s pattern change to be suspicious. Thank you, k-drama gods, for not making Jeong-jo a fool!

Of course, this is all Minister Ha’s ploy and by this time tomorrow, the Red Messenger will be caught and he promises the fake that he will keep his word with whatever deal they made. Oh nooo’s—not you…just kidding, I won’t give it away.

The next day, the games begin and the heat is on between the two teams. The gisaengs are in a fix—the Jalgeum Quartet are broken up—whoever shall they cheer for? At least the Headmaster’s happy about the team roster since there’ll no longer be any bickering between the Noron and Soron faction—all thanks to In-soo. Speaking of which, In-soo is giving Byung-choon the “This-is-your-last-chance-fo-real-don’t-eff-it-up” look.

Sun-joon and Yoon-hee are still as angsty as ever and despite her efforts to make peace, Sun-joon won’t have any of it. If only you knew, dear Yoon-hee, the hurricane of feelings your boy is dealing with right now. She swears to Guh-ro that she’s going to try her best today—not out of spite, but to show Sun-joon that she can do just fine all by herself. After all, they can’t always be on the same team forever.

Guh-ro grasps her arm and ties her sleeve down for her as he tells her she’s not alone…please Guh-ro, don’t leave me alone either!

When the actual game begins, In-soo repeatedly (and suspiciously) passes the ball to Yoon-hee with a creepy Buddha smirk on his face—this is all a part of Byung-choon’s plan. Go-bong is to cover Guh-ro, who’ll probably stick by Yoon-hee’s side, and it’s Byung-choon’s plan to hit Yoon-hee in the head with his stick while acting like he’s going for the ball…although…I don’t really see how that’s going to look natural, with the ball on the ground and Yoon-hee’s head nowhere near it… but whatever.

Byung-choon’s plans are constantly thwarted by Sun-joon’s aggressive playing—yeah, Yoon-hee and Sun-joon have got their own battle to fight. Sun-joon pushes past her and hits a goal in but then looks on at Guh-ro helping Yoon-hee up. What’d you think was going to happen?

Guh-ro’s furious at Sun-joon for playing so aggressively against Yoon-hee, and Sun-joon’s furious at Guh-ro for getting involved in her business. Uncharacteristically losing his temper, and to the surprise of everyone watching, Sun-joon moves to throw a punch but is stopped by Yoon-hee. (Ooh, I like angry Sun-joon!).

Yoon-hee reprimands him for trying to use violence when it’s just a game, “Aren’t you ashamed?” Turning to Guh-ro, she spits her venom, “Don’t worry about it. He’s not even worth our time.” Youch.

Of course, through all this, Yong-ha looks on at the action in amusement. Yong-ha’s out of the game with an “injury” but Professor Jung points out to him that he’s always watching on the sidelines. “Which is it? Are you afraid of fighting? Or afraid of losing?”

Yong-ha, slightly taken aback, “I don’t know, probably…both?” Ah, finally, a defining character flaw!

Despite Yoon-hee’s words, it’s now on like donkey kong between Sun-joon and Guh-ro but unbeknownst to them, Go-bong and Byung-choon take the opportunity to steal the ball and finally take a strike at Yoon-hee. In-soo’s waiting for the ball with his creeper face and passes to Yoon-hee when he gets it. Our innocent heroine takes it as a lucky break but Yong-ha finds it suspicious—there’s no way that In-soo would make so many mistakes.

Sure enough, Byung-choon’s waiting with his stick up (um, a little too obvious, don’t you think?) as Yoon-hee dribbles the ball and needless to say, Guh-ro catches sight of Byung-choon’s stink eye and runs over to hold him down. Go-bong joins in on the wrestle and Yoon-hee tries her best to side step the three as In-soo watches the struggle.

Catching sight of Cho-sun’s smiling face, In-soo decides to get involved and strike Yoon-hee himself…slow motion, he winds up, he strikes, Sun-joon takes the blow and he and Yoon-hee fall to the ground. (Just…no words for this action sequence.)

Everyone’s horrified, especially Minister Ha who can’t find the words to properly apologize to Minister Lee. (Oh, and Headmaster Choi and his hilarious screech!) Minister Lee dismisses it as nothing more than a game but of course, that’s just Minister Lee’s way of saying he’s really pissed off. The engagement’s probably out of the question now. A snarky grin from me!

With that, the first half of the game is over and it’s pretty much a sh** out of luck situation for In-soo.

Yong-ha adds his two-cents: “I know that you were out to get Kim Yoon-shik from the beginning. That was really unlike you…to get your own hands dirty like this. Makes no sense.”
In-soo: “What makes no sense are those guys. How can something like this happen? Who the hell is Kim Yoon-shik, that the Left Minister’s son would throw himself for him?”

Headmaster Choi is busy trying to make amends with Minister Lee but he’s more interested to know about Kim Yoon-shik, “What kind of kid is he?”

Yoon-hee’s sitting in a daze when Guh-ro hands her a water canteen but instead of taking it, she begins blaming herself for Sun-joon’s injuries. She can’t take it anymore and runs off to go see him…and the second lead heartbreak begins.

Sun-joon’s in the infirmary and although his eye are open, he’s still a little delirious from the blow as he sees/thinks back to all his memories with Yoon-hee and imagines her at his bedside. When he finally comes to, it’s not Yoon-hee by his side but a concerned Hyo-eun. He sits up and she tells him that now that she’s seen him awake, she’ll take her leave, adding, “About our engagement…our family will no longer pressure you into this marriage. So please take care of yourself.”

But with Yoon-hee’s entrance into the infirmary, Sun-joon gets up and asks Hyo-eun, “Will you…marry me? Please… marry me. Up until now, I’ve never failed to accomplish what I willed. I’ve also never failed at what I’ve tried. I’ve also never broken a promise. And I’m going to keep it that way. I’ll always try my best—”

A heartbroken Yoon-hee can’t stand to hear anymore and leaves the room as an equally heartbroken Sun-joon continues, “If you’re okay with someone like me…will you please hold me back?”

Yoon-hee runs off in tears and Guh-ro peeks into the room to see what the big commotions about…and realization strikes! Drunk Yoon-hee wasn’t calling him a bastard…it was Sun-joon all along. Three heartbroken souls and one enraged viewer…yeah, I’m writhing in rage.

Guh-ro finds Yoon-hee crying alone and tells her, “There are some things…that no matter what anyone says, you don’t feel any better. But even if you can’t feel better, you can make yourself forget. You just have to bug the hell out of your body…it’s pretty useful and I think I might try it out myself for the first time in awhile…you should try it too.”
Gosh, how do you always know the right thing to say, Guh-ro.

The second half of the game begins and Yoon-hee takes Guh-ro’s advice—she’s playing harder than the first half and so is Guh-ro. The two make quite the combo—Guh-ro blocks, Yoon-hee shoots, and they win the game.

Sun-joon looks on at their victory celebration while his manservant gushes at the changes he sees in his young master—Sun-joon throwing himself to save another? Who would’ve ever thunk it! Sun-joon claims that’s all in the past now, but Minister Lee’s not so convinced—he’s concerned for his changed son.

When Yoon-hee runs into Sun-joon, she tries to thank him but he tells her that he would’ve done the same for anyone, “So there’s nothing to be thankful or feel sorry about.” As he begins to leave, Yoon-hee adds:
“The two of you… look really good together. I wanted to tell you congratulations,” and Sun-joon wordlessly walks off.

Everyone’s washing up and Yong-ha’s feeling a little playful again when he sees Yoon-hee walking by. He owes her a bucket of water and he intends to throw it to her because surely she’s not going to not wash up after all that sweaty exercise. Guh-ro comes to her rescue again as he makes up some bogus errand Yoon-hee needs to run, leaving Yong-ha getting adorably up close and personal with Guh-ro. Yong-ha+Guh-ro pairing for the win!

Back in the infirmary, King Jeong-jo is having a few words with Professor Jung about the trap being set up for the Red Messenger tonight. The Red Messenger, who he believes to be a Sungkyunkwan scholar, needs to be protected at all costs—and that job falls on Professor Jung. Only the Messenger knows where the Geum-deung-ji-sa is, and if he’s caught, not even he the King will be able to protect him.

Guh-ro looks over the Fake Red Messenger’s message and knows it’s actually an invitation for him to show himself. The rest of the school is also buzzing about the Red Messenger over dinner, the unanimous opinion appearing to be that the Red Messenger deserves to be caught—after all, he’s just a thief and a murderer.

Guh-ro asks Yoon-hee if she’s of the same opinion and when she tell him she’s sure he’s Sungkyunkwan scholar, he momentarily freezes. Yoon-hee goes on to explain:

“All of the Red Messenger’s notes were beautifully written,” Guh-ro smirks smugly but she continues, “Tsk tsk tsk…that guy sure is pathetic,” Guh-ro freezes, “I mean, he writes all those beautiful words in Chinese characters… does he expect the uneducated people or women who only know Hangeul to be able to read it or not? He’s senseless, I say, senseless. I mean, who is he trying to reveal the truth for? With that kind of mindset, how is he going to change the world?”

Guh-ro stares at Yoon-hee, she stops chewing, and he bursts into laughter. “You’re right. Red Messenger… that pathetic fool,” and he laughs some more—whilst both my nostrils burst with bloody streams… too graphic?

Guh-ro’s euphoric and so am I, but grumpy Sun-joon can’t take anymore and leaves and Yong-ha notices that something’s up. So he catches up with Sun-joon in the library and points out that hiding out in the library instead of eating is something that not a betrothed man, but a heartbroken man would do. Is it because he’s jealous?

Before Sun-joon can even reply, Yong-ha waves him off telling him that he gets it—surely someone as stiff necked and proper as Lee Sun-joon wouldn’t indulge in an emotion like jealousy… right? He continues, “If the person you like has someone else in their heart, then I’m sure that even Confucius himself would feel envy, indignation, wrath, and jealousy. Because that’s what it means to be human. Is it Lee Sun-joon-like to trick your own feelings? I’m just… curious.”

Meanwhile, In-soo’s plans to catch the Red Messenger but he gets called to the Headmaster’s office where his title and privileges as President are revoked. According to Professor Jung, his true sin lies in the fact that he shamed Sungkyunkwan’s name for all the people to see, thus he should be punished for them to see also. You reap what you sow.

Palace guards make preparations for the Red Messenger’s capture, as does Professor Jung’s preparation to prevent it. No one is to leave the school tonight but of course Guh-ro’s wall climbing skills are no match for the school staff.

Yong-ha, on the other hand, is THE Gu Yong-ha—he catches Guh-ro as he’s making his escape.

Yong-ha: “Going somewhere, Guh-ro? If it’s for a game of cards, I’ll play with you…and if it’s for a drink, there’s a lot in my room.”
Guh-ro: “You can’t win against me.”
Yong-ha: “The Red Messenger is just the bait. The one they really want is you! Don’t you get it?”
Guh-ro: (Taken aback at his knowledge) “You…”
Yong-ha: “Did you think I wouldn’t know? Did you think I was a fool who wouldn’t even know what his only friend of 10 years was up to?”
Guh-ro smirks and tries to leave, but Yong-ha grabs him (and I’m already dead on the floor): “Don’t go. Aren’t you afraid? You could die!”
Guh-ro: “Afraid? Why would I be afraid? It’s not like living is that much better than dying.”
Yong-ha hits him in anger: “If living isn’t better than dying… then what am I? Go. Just go and live the way you want…and disappear.”
Guh-ro: “Then am I supposed to just watch as my brother’s life work is being tainted by some petty thievery and murders? When it’s because of me? Living like that… is that really living?”

Tearful Yong-ha can’t reply and Guh-ro runs off into the dark after reassuring him that he’ll return unscathed. (From this point on, it’s my soul-less body writing, because my soul decided to go bye-bye from the overload of awesomeness.)

The Fake Red Messenger is up to his/her rogue antics when the real Red Messenger appears and manages to injure the imposter before he/she escapes. The injured fake finds sanctuary in a storage room and unmasks herself—(fake gasp) Cho-sun!

The palace guards surround the real Messenger and things are looking dismal for him when he receives a devastating gash to his gut—but when two mysterious men come to his rescue, Guh-ro manages to make his escape. The mysterious men are the king’s men and he’s glad to hear the Red Messenger managed to make his escape.

Back at school, Yoon-hee feigns coincidence when she runs into Sun-joon at the library. He tries to leave but she asks him if he’s avoiding her. He coldly replies, “What a surprising delusion. Is Kim Yoon-shik important enough for me to avoid?”

“Are you still mad about the Open House night?” When he begins to walk away, she continues, “Was it all worth nothing to you? All the times we shared in the past… were they so trivial that it’d all break down from a small misunderstanding? Or is it because your feelings for that girl are so great?”

Sun-joon tries to avoid the questions, but Yoon-hee presses on, “I told you. Once we leave Sungkyunkwan, we’ll never see each other again. Until then, can’t we just get along as mere roommates? Is that really something that I can’t even hope for? Answer me.”

Trying to press down his feelings, Sun-joon replies, “Listen well Kim Yoon-shik. I have no intention of going back to the way things were.”

Hurt, Yoon-hee runs out in tears. A few silent moments pass before Sun-joon runs after her.

Yoon-hee’s running her feelings away when a bloody masked man falls in pain before her. She carefully approaches, realizing that it’s the Red Messenger, when he suddenly pulls her into an embrace.

He manages to tell her, “It’s a good thing I managed to stay alive.” And with that, Guh-ro unmasks himself.

COMMENTS

I was punching and kicking the air throughout this episode—unlike the previous episodes where it was out of pent up euphoria, this episode it was out of rage. Don’t get me wrong, it doesn’t mean I didn’t like the episode, because I loved it. And it’s also not because I thought the angst was unnecessary, because I know it’s necessary for the dramatic process, but it was simply because k-drama angst always kills me (I enjoy it, but it kills me… yeah yeah I’m a masochist). A giant step backward for Sun-joon, who was well on his way to shedding the rules and principles that bound him—however, I understand that the internal struggle is necessary so that the leap he makes later on is that much greater. It’s just frustrating to watch him digress, that’s all I’m saying.

Lots of heartbreak this episode. Heartbreaking for Yoon-hee who doesn’t understand the real reason for Sun-joon’s coldness—the fact that she finds the need to deny her womanhood (again)and assure him that she only has eyes for Cho-sun just so that he’ll talk to her—utter sadness. Heartbreaking for Sun-joon, who’s heart is feeling things that his whole life philosophy reprimands—the fact that his proposal to Hyo-eun is more like a desperate plea for salvation. Heartbreaking for Guh-ro who mistakenly thought Yoon-hee was angsty over him only to find out it wasn’t—and yet he is still the dark knight in shining armor. And lastly, heartbreaking for Yong-ha, who for the first time showed raw emotion for Guh-ro.

I’m shipping Yong-ha and Guh-ro simply because I think I have too much testosterone in me and brotherly love trumps romantic love. Okay, not always, but that’s how much I love the Yong-ha+Guh-ro brotherhood. Don’t get me wrong, I love all the other pairings—but maybe it’s because Guh-ro’s the only person that Yong-ha seems to truly love/care-for. I’m not going to suggest that it’s romantic… although, I honestly think his feelings could go both ways.

Another thing about Yong-ha I appreciate is the fact that he’s kind of the glue for the Jalgeum Quartet. If it weren’t for him, the relationships would simply be a love triangle—but because he exists, they become a brotherhood (er… I know Yoon-hee’s a girl, but you know what I mean.) He’s always got the right thing to say to Sun-joon, Yoon-hee, and Guh-ro to get their minds thinking—i.e. his little talk with Sun-joon this episode about what it means to be human. We’ve also finally got a definite character flaw—he’s kind of a coward. The first thing Yong-ha asks Guh-ro when he’s about to set off is, “Aren’t you afraid?” That’s also probably why he doesn’t belong to a particular faction, and has such an ambiguous relationship with In-soo—he’s afraid to be on the losing team.

In-soo is such a complex character, I can’t seem to figure him out. I kind of feel like he’s a Gu Jun-pyo on crack—his ego is way out of wack which skews his perception on reality. Feel sorta sorry for him, especially because he seems to never win against Yoon-hee. Throw the guy a bone~

Thanks for the recaps. Other than Mickey not quite protray the confused state Sun Joon is in, I enjoyed this episode tremendously mainly due to the other 3 leads playing their roles so well. Can't believe there are only a few episodes left.

I dont think so ...
Mickey is doing it really well. I´m actually impressed

It must be really hard to play a role like this (a man that try to dont show his emotions at all)
But he is doing it really well.

the 4 actors are awesome

i love J4 <3

yess .... Micky's expression bothered me abit. He is so emotionless... no expression ... It so hard to relate for his char . It's rare because usually I don't care about the actor ability to potray his char, as long as his character is interesting... But not this one..
please don't throw me a stone *hides*

me too.i'm so indifferent with the main couple since we know at the end,sun joon is definitely going to be with Yoon Hee. not that i don't like Micky and i don't have any comment about his acting ability (lol,as if i know anything about acting) but i think his character is totally overshadowed by Jaeshin & Yongha. Up to this point (ep 13), i still don't have any feeling towards LSJ.

This is honestly the first time i watch any drama without pushing the fast forward button. I watch the story for the sake of how beautifully it is written. Sometimes i'm hoping that there'll will be a twist in this drama where the second lead gets the girl. ^^

I'm one with all of you. No matter how awesome Lee Soon jun's character is, I can't seem to like him that much particularly because of micky's expressions (or lack thereof). It's really hard relating to his character because I really don't know what I should feel. Angst? Pain? I don't know.
On another note, it's official. Yoo Ah-in as moon jae shin has completely stolen my dear heart and there's no giving it back. my god! i always find myself clutching my heart every time he does/says something to cheer yoon hee up and despite knowing the fact that she can't have her, he still continues to remain by her side. SIGH. i can't even bear to watch episodes 15 and 16 coz i know there will be major heartbreak moments for him.
YOO AH IN! SARANGHAE!

I do agree : It's really about QUALITY & ABILITY that you can
see and enjoy from the casts. I'm a huge fan of showing-not-telling in story telling, which YAI's been given. This's the first drama that I'm not IN with the main m lead.
Yes, quite a heartbroken episodes 15 & 16 but wasn't that bad kinda "doesn't lets emotion rule his life".( I think )

same here. I used to like the 1st male lead character in every kdrama I watched.... but this is the first time I can't relate the main male lead.... ughh >.<...
I just need a decent acting from the actor to potray their char (a stellar acting=bonus), add to the fact that their character are have depth and interesting, And I WILL LOVE them....
it so easy to impress me... but Micky can't impress me at all... awww

I'm actually hiding from the fans as well. While I did like Micky in the beginning eps, ep 1-5 to be specific but the more I watch him after that the more he just doesn't do it for me. I was indifferent to him and now I just skip over his parts and YH-SJ parts (I also have a problem with this couple, yes they are compatible but I can't feel much chemistry. Hence, all the gazing and glancing and angst of this couple now bore me, they're the main couple they will get together so just get over it and focus on more interesting aspect of SKKS (the underused SKK school setting etc). Their angst annoyed the hell out of me to be honest... I'm usually a patient viewer, I don't like fast forwarding. But I just can't stand them anymore. I'm sorry)

LSJ as a character is usually the type that I root for and like, he's just so my type but I just can't connect with SJ this time. I've always liked the main male character in most dramas, even when the actor portraying it isn't all that great at acting. Micky does a good job for a newbie I give him that, but I don't feel attracted to him at all. His portrayal of SJ makes SJ unappealing to my eyes and I know I SHOULD like him but I don't. There's something lacking and I can't pinpoint why I just don't feel for SJ.

I am still a fan of SKKS although not as obsessed as I was before. I will keep watching as long as they give me my Moony and Moony-Yongha. I'm not a yaoi fan but their bromance and chemistry is way way stronger than the main couple. Now if this was Yongha angsting about being gay and Moony realizes Yongha's love... it would draw me in emotionally right away.

Totally agree. Decent acting = good; stellar acting = bonus. Yoo Ah In, Song Joong Ki, Park Min Young = bonus.

YESssss !!!! Yong-ha is the SUPERGLUE for the J-4 ...............
If; no Yong-ha in SkkS likes no Kimchi in Korea.

i wonder why chosun decided to pull a "Zhang Ziyi" on us and be the fake "Red Messenger?" i thought she's all for the good of the Jalgeum Quartet and the SK scholars, but i guess we'll find out why she did it some time in the future episodes.

I think she did this for the Minister of War since the Minister of War does have some hold over Cho Sun. I think this was mentioned in Cho Sun's first appearance that the Minister of War has some information on/has Cho Sun's family captivity or something.

Thank you so much for the recap! I really enjoyed hearing your opinions; they bring about a new perspective.

As for this line: "In-soo is such a complex character, I can’t seem to figure him out. I kind of feel like he’s a Gu Jun-pyo on crack." ...downright hilarious! Thanks again!

YAY! OMG I was ridiculously excited to see this recap. :) I have trouble finding the english subbed version of this show sometimes, so you are my one link to the SKKS world! And I loved this, a ton. I totally agree with you on the brotherly love thing. And pretty much everything else. Thanks so so so so so so so so so so much for the recap, and I absolutely can't wait for the next one! I'm glad you had a good mini-vacation and look forward to reading more of your awesome recaps. Again, thanks!

I love Yong-ha so much more after watching this first episode. For a while, I wasn't so sure what to think about his character. He was fun and charming, but he didn't seem to think about the real serious consequences that could have resulted from his actions. For example, in the very beginning when he suspected YS to be a girl and sent her to the geisha, he wanted her to fail, but if she actually did, the end result would be that she would be found out as a girl, and maybe even death as punishment. Then, when he sent SJ and YS to the island, he clearly already knows YS is female and JS has feelings for her, and he suspects SJ also has feelings for YS. Yet still, he sets things up the way it happened and basically torments all 4 people just to prove JS's feelings. It just seemed extreme. But, this episode proves that he actually has very deep attachment to JS, and I'm glad the scene by the wall took place.

watched this way way way ahead of the review but i love you dear reviewer!^^ i love reading your reviews as much as i love watching the drama!^^ *spazz* oh the anime/manga style nose-bleeds and soul going to heaven moments!^^ i feel exactly the same in the exact same parts!^^ which is why i love coming here for skk recaps time and time again!^^ (i actually read recaps elsewhere but db is always the best place for the most awesome recaps!^^)

ahhhhhh..... but yeorim already admitted that georoh made him feel that way... and that he's only like that with georoh... ohhhh.... i'm shipping them hard to save my life... i always fall for the second lead and georoh's soooo amazing here that my heart would break if he didn't have anyone... so i'm happy he's with yeorim and THANK HEAVENS there is no real love square in this drama....^^

i'm waiting to watch ep 15 and i actually even want to watch it without subs (read a rough/rather stilted recap elsewhere) but i'll be patient with this one...

i have astronomically high standards for this drama because it built itself up so well.... i'm already starting to get anxious that there are only four episodes left til it ends and there are still quite a few matters left to be resolved. i don't want a prolonged extended drama that will delay the wonderful pacing but at the same time, four eps seem too short... ahhhh.... *panics*

thanks again for the great recap!^^ i'll be eagerly awaiting your next piece!^^ <3 <3 <3

that is an interesting thought...

i think it would be a great step for him, character wise, if he saw it and suspected that she may be the hongbyukseo and DIDN'T turn her in, because of his feelings...

it would make him a lot more human at least

He knows that there is a fake red messenger/hongbyeokseo. I forget which episode but he has a conversation with his father, who mentions he's staged the fake. When Insoo asks who the fake is, his father merely replies that the fake is someone trustworthy. So, Insoo knows that the fake is a trap intended to catch the real one. There's no reason he'd think Chosun was the real one, especially since the guards out to catch the real hongbyseokseo are in on the fake hongbyeokseo plot.

I'm more curious to know how the drama will resolve the triangulation now set up between Chosun/fake Hongbyeokseo, Guhro/the real one, and the object of both's affection/Kim Yoon Shik. Wonder if KYS will have to step in at the last minute to save the real one and Chosun choose to sacrifice herself for her love.

Love Guhro, love Yongha (maybe a little bit of a coward but that seems more an excuse to legitimize/veil his preference to play puppetmaster), really love the repressed Sunjoon (how else but as anger - inwardly or outwardly directed - would repression manifest). At least in this episode, it would be out of character for him to give away his angst as angst. Much more appropriate that he'd try to control it, channel it into spurning the object of his affection, etc.

Yes, I have to concur. I love you too dear reviewer. Your recaps are so awesome that the spazzing that I've gone through for these recaps is equivalent to how much spazzing I've gone through for a "regular" kdrama. Of course, watching the show itself is like a hour long seizure. A lot of wheezing, chest-pounding, and floor-slapping (because I'm on the floor by then). I've never fallen so hard for a drama before. I was almost kidding myself when Yong-ha was crying. Are those tears? The Drama would not have it in for me and be so sadistic/wonderful! GAH! *arrow in the heart* TEARS! GU YONGHA! When this drama ends I will seriously go into actual withdrawal.

Please Kdrama Gods send someone for poor In Soo. Poor guy has only smiled once the whole drama. He probably has eyestrain after all the glaring. Someone take pity on him. He's not so bad. He just needs a little TLC to become a better man. Hopefully Cho Sun his "first love" will have pity on him.

I'm on pins and needles. I can't wait to see his reaction when he finds out Daemul is a girl (and she beat him at everything). Also the fact that his dad wanted to make her his new MOMMY :P That is going to be a priceless moment for me.

Anyone else looking forward to that reveal?

Well ... since you requested it ;) ... I've actually been imagining for myself a story in which Yong-ha and In-soo end up together. Anyone else see the appeal of this pairing?

It's easy to imagine that they're both kind of damaged, emotionally wounded (my favorite type of drama hero!) ... Yong-ha hides his vulnerability under a veneer of cynicism and mockery, never really letting his true self be shown, and never really getting close to anyone in an honest way that requires any emotional risk; I'd like to see him face and deal with all the angst and torment that goes with the negotiation of a genuine relationship.

(I love the idea of Yong-ha with Guh-ro, by the way -- I love, love, love Jae-shin -- but I think that, just the fact that Yong-ha does express so much caring toward Jae-shin suggests that he knows it's very safe; there's no chance Jae-shin will actually take him up on his flirtatious advances and make him put his money where his mouth is, so to speak ... Jae-shin seems to treat all of Yong-ha's little attentions with exasperated fondness, more than anything else...)

And I always love the idea of the villain who's cruel and harsh because he's so wounded himself (In-soo), lashing out at others to keep everyone at a distance... but then being rescued by the one person he can open himself up to and allow himself to get close to. Wouldn't it be great to see Yong-ha and In-soo slowly come to care for each other, slowly open up to each other and dare to be vulnerable... and finally -- with a lot of pain and misunderstanding along the way, of course -- end up rescuing each other? I'd read that romance novel :)

Hmmm that might work. I wasn't picturing them together.

I want Cho Sun to beat his sorry butt (We know she can do it too) and straighten him out. A sword to the neck move, if you know what I mean. He thinks she is a girly girl in need of protection, but she is anything but that. :P I would Soo love to see that :D
She could be the one saving him :D

LOL! This thread is too funny! How did a wish for a happy ending for In Soo end up with requests for a Jae Shin/ Yong Ha slasher fanfic? If I got the evolution of the pairing right.......

In Soo/Chosun -> In Soo/ Yong Ha -> Jae Shin/ Yong Ha
ROFL

I guess everyone is feeling the Moony/Yummy love! :)

I could totally write a fan fiction for it! My midterms are almost over so I will have some free time .Which would appeal more to your sensibilities Chosun/ Insoo or Yoon Hee/ In Soo? Or an entirely other geometric configuration?

I could get on board with a Cho-sun/In-soo pairing -- she's pretty badass, and could definitely handle him; that could be a pretty hot story. But then who is there to challenge/rescue poor Yong-ha? He and Cho-sun are too similar, and Jae-shin is too nice. I guess it'd have to be Sun-joon, then ... that could actually be pretty hot, too!

That aside, I would absolutely LOVE to see Jae-shin go all tough drama hero on Yong-ha ... do a wrist-grab, slam him up against a wall, and give him a forceful, angry kiss, which would leave them both shaken and confused. Writers, please, please?

I really like this ep. It showed the emotional side of yong ha and his relationship with jae Shin. I have to agree that his feelings toward our Moony is more of the my-only-brother/friend-in-the-world-so-I-can't- lose-you kind of love/care. Jae Shin is sooo COOL!like his heart was breaking, but what the heck!He was still cool with it and not even trying to get Yoon hee for himself.(reminds me of Shin Woo of "He's Beautiful")He could have just told her that "Hey,I know you're a girl."I'm just imagining how things would turn out if Jae Shin disclosed(right at the moment) to Yeon Hee what he discovered about her ...Taekyung(in He's Beautiful) confronted Minam(Minyeo) about it (although he was not the "first" to know it)but it became an advantage for their romantic development.I'm still rooting for the KYS/MJS pairing...T.T..it's not a crime to wish right?

OMG What a shocker? Cho-sun as the fake Red Messenger. I wonder why though?..damn so juicy..

but I'm with you cassie. Bromance FTW!!! I'm more into the Bromance than the main pairing..well actually I still love the main pairing but I love the Bromance. It's not a love for "I'm hoping for romantic stuff from them it's a love for their friendship.
Guh-Ro & Yong-ha is the ultimate couple/pairing of the show..lol & OMG I started to tear up when Yong ha started to cry because of stupid Guh-Ro..can't he see that his friend just doesn't want him to die. That's his only REAL TRUE friend. The ending I'm happy they are gonna find out that Guh-Ro is the Red Messenger even though Yong ha knew already.
I love how Yong ha knows everything. His like that one person that knows all the latest gossips/juices rumors/hook-ups & break ups. His the person you wannabe friends with so you'll know latest 411/scoop.

I'm looking forward to ep.16 more....

"…I don’t really see how that’s going to look natural, with the ball on the ground and Yoon-hee’s head nowhere near it… but whatever." >>> The 'hockey' game have got to be the weakest part in this whole series. It was so bad. It doesn't flow. The archery competition was very exciting compared to this fast game. Very, very bad editing.

I love when Yoon Hee comments about the the Red Messenger. YHee comment is on the dot and Jae Shin...when he laughed (how good looking or warm his laughter is :) ), I just laughed with him. He never thought from that angle. Smart YHee!!!

"Yong-ha, slightly taken aback, “I don’t know, probably…both?” Ah, finally, a defining character flaw!" >>>>> Yong Ha finally seeing himself from another angle from the perspective of Prof Jung that he always avoided situations that involve any fighting and he also doesn't like the feel of losing.
I'm not saying that he is a coward but he does make calculated risk. He can't be a true blue coward when he went inside the hut towards a group of young boys/thiefs in Bunchon when he was searching for info. He could have easily been beaten by them.
If he can get by any situation using his intelligence (his EQ is also very good) why use brute force? The way he survives is the same way YHee survives. Using their brains. And for YHa his charms :) (Oh boy... I'm so charmed by him :) )
His EQ must be very good because even the lecturer and SKKS staffs didn't mind him hanging around there on the stage with them during the hockey game.

I pity Cho Sun. Her life must be hell!!! Having to kill other to save your own family. Hope something good will happen to her.

Although I really like Jae Shin as a character, it wasn't meant to be between him and YHee. This is one drama that I can see, no matter how awesome the second lead is, the main pairing is SJ and Yhee. They were just meant to be. Their minds jive together. Spurring the best in each of them. That's what I love about them.
Kudos to Yoochun for making his character comes alive. Just like JGS last year, making a character that is not attractive on paper to be lovable... is an amazing feat.

Thanks Cassie for the lovely recap. At first wasn't going to comment but after reading through your recap, it jolts my memory of what I love about SKKS. SKKS is fast becoming one of my favorite series. Every episodes seems to outdo the last one. Hope for a homerun.

Sun-joon using Hyo-eun is not the most honorable or forthright thing he's ever done! I'm wondering if he'll face any consequences for deceiving her or if the entire situation will be handwaved. I'd at least like an apology from SJ, he owes her that much.

I wasn't super shocked about Cho-sun's reveal as the Fake Red Messenger (who was?). Aside from Yoon Hee's mother, she's the only lady (Fake Messenger looked like a girl in one scene) who the audience is slightly invested in with connections to the Minister of War. It was a given but still really badass and cool! A gisaeng blackmailed into being an assassin? That's the premise for a whole another drama right there.

Yong-ha is so in love with Jae-shin. No one can dispute this fact! I am a lot less convinced that Jae-shin feels the same way, but this was an interesting development for Yong-ha. He has a heart! He has feelings! I wonder what the writers were going for with the play boy act. The guy is clearly gay for his best friend.

Finally, Yoon-hee has my vote for k-drama heroine of the year. So. Much. Awesome.

I love the way they all just FIT together so perfectly. The characters are great but the way the actors bring it forth is awesome. The camaraderie, the angstiness, the everything-in-between is just so freakin' good that there's plenty of squealing, screaming, crying, melting, drooling, laughing, etc. on my part. It's been a while since I've been so hooked on a drama.

Now... don't anyone boo me, but is it just me... or what exactly does Yoon Hee see in Sun Joon? I mean, yeah he's hot.. yeah he's righteous... but what's there to "love" about him? Is it because he was the first to believe in her?

I'm kind of having trouble understanding the relationship between Yoon Hee and Sun Joon... I can see why Sun Joon likes yoon hee, but not why she'll like him back....

Hmmm...

P.S. Is it just me, or do korean female leads lack strength, and appear a bit bipolar? I say this because one moment female lead characters like Yoon Yee are so strong, facing adversity, and yet in the next scene they're crying over a guy, and letting their emotions get the best of them? O_O

I was hoping this drama would show the strength of Yoon Hee, but so far all i see is the strength of the guys around her, supporting her, and solving all her problems for her. She tends to give up easily in front of everyone, but when by herself, she acts tough, like when she told her teacher she refuses to leave. Yet, one little thing gets in the way, and she backs down. So confused! Argh.

As faboo as Guhro is, I find myself debating whether I'd fall for Sunjoon or Guhro in real life. While I think I'd fall for both, it'd be for very different reasons.

To answer your question about Sunjoon, I personally find very attractive his intellect, integrity, fearlessness grounded in integrity, willingness to buck the system when the system is lacking, confidence in his beliefs, self-confidence, alpha-male-ness, golden-childness, etc. I find his stoicism, critical aloofness, and stalwartness incredibly attractive. He's a no bull kind of guy, which is soooo refreshing. I also find attractive that, as seemingly rigid as he is, he is actually quite expansive and generous with those who are deserving. And most of all, he values and regards Yoonshik/Yoonhee as an equal, with respect. He doesn't coddle her or protect her. He challenges her to grow and allows himself to be challenged in return. How awesome is that? Genuine give and take. Rare.

Guhro is fabulous, but his hiccups are revealing. He has a hard time relating to women as people. He sees them as a kind of an other. As such, he's gruff but protective. His respect for and attentiveness to Yoonhee is always tinged by the knowledge that she's a she. He is a perfect Oppa, and personally I can't dig being with Oppas. The inequality probably would drive me nuts. If the wall Guhro builds out of a well-intentioned desire to protect never gets breached, there probably could be no true give and take.

As for Korean female leads - don't get me started. I don't know what it is about K-Dramas, but the makers of dramas do tend to place very flawed heroines amidst very capable heroes who usually learn a thing or two about being human, aka flawed - perhaps intentionally to appeal to their primary audience, so that these heroines' inadequacies allow for the viewers to either identify with the heroines or to place themselves in their roles. Whatever - there could be a whole school of film theory in the offing.

That's precisely it, though. It's his brand of protectiveness that becomes all the more charged with the gender inequality. Wait til episodes 15 & 16. He does so much taking care of rather than enabling her. He doesn't let her in on the decision-making process. She just has to let him take charge and just follow. Yoonhee isn't like that. She has her own mind.

That said, I love Guhro. Don't get me wrong. I just don't think he's the one for Yoonhee.

Chosun and Guhro, on the other hand,... I've been entertaining the possibilities for this pairing for the past few episodes. They just might work. As womanly and as capable as she is, she is nonetheless trapped and exploited in accordance with the Joseon social hierarchy, especially by the Byungpan. Somehow it's working in my head that MJS realizes how screwed she is, develops some sense of understanding of how pitiful her lot is, and finds that damsel he must rescue, if only from her lot (cause she can fend rather well for herself otherwise). Ding! The maturity of that relationship will be so redeeming for him as well, allow him to grow into his own gravitas.

i totally agree with what you say about yongha. the two guys would have fallen for the girl anyway, but without yongha, they could easily have hated each other. but he forced the four of them to get together, and all of them, because of him, accept each other's pros and cons and love them more so for it.
and ohmygod, if only jaeshin wasn't pining over the girl (and breaking my heart every single time he comes on screen) he would be perfect with yongha. +_+
that scene with the two of them killed me. kyaaaaaa.

I really want to know more of YongHa's character too. He seems so mysterious (even though it was GeolOh who might initially have the appearance of mysterious boy). He's perceptive, a detective on the lose and a mastermind of plot device. Without him it might take foreverrrrr for SunJoon or JaeShin to realize or admit their own feelings. This episode also marks the first time YongHa ever displays his true nature... which is so heartbreaking... but I lurrve it.

Thanks so so much for the recap

This part of your comment got me going back trying to think through the episode regarding Yong-ha

"The first thing Yong-ha asks Guh-ro when he’s about to set off is, “Aren’t you afraid?” That’s also probably why he doesn’t belong to a particular faction, and has such an ambiguous relationship with In-soo—he’s afraid to be on the losing team."

I'm having a hard time deducting that conclusion out of the story on Yong-ha but I can see where this could start especially from the way he answer Prof. Jung. Yong-ha is such a complicated character that I wish I have more background on him. Joong-ki portraits his role very well while being able to keep GYH's character mysterious.

I've watched Ep 15 & 16 raw (no sub and don't understand Korean)... definitely have the urge to know more about GYH as well as his relationship with MJS. Other than being the glue for the quartet, he has to have more purpose in this drama. Sorry, so round about with my comment.

This drama is definitely a lot of fun to watch.

For your amusement. Hope it's not gauche to post links to another similar blogger. If so, forgive - just wanted to share the love.

Dramabeans, you rock! Your recaps are like watching these episodes with girlfriends. Thank you very much. More power! Your English is good.

I love song joong ki in this drama. especially in this episode. b/c we see a side of him that we haven't seen before. this is a breakout episode for his character. he showed us a more serious side. the episode belonged to gu yonha and moon jae shin all the way!!!

I loved gu Yong-ha and moon jae shin in this episode. they totally stole the whole episode. and we finally get to see a deeper side to gu yong-ha instead of his always smiling and joking manner. bravo!!!!

Yong-ha cries for Guh-ro/Jae-shin really moves me. If that's not LOVE, I don't know what the tears mean.

"He chuckles, I die. " watashi mooo <3
"...and he laughs some more—whilst both my nostrils burst with bloody streams… too graphic?" ZETTAI watashi mooo <3

And yesh, Jaeshin<3-YongHa Bromance is just L.O.V.E. One of the most touching scenes in SKKS. I have much newly found respect for Gu-YongHa-midaaa... enough to squeeze some tears and got me sobbing... Kudos to Song JoongKi ! I'm not surprised if all 4 Jalgeum Quartet get nominated for awards!

Many gazillion thanks for your recaps Cassie-chan! *bows*
