So looking forward to Athena.. Siwonnie looks real good in it... kind of reminds me of the time he appeared in a Zhang Li Yin video with HanGeng... but that time he was a gangster... this time he'll be on the good guy's side... Then I'm also looking forward to Donghae's acting "debut" in Ok, Daddy's girl... and then really really looking forward to Donghae's AND Siwon's collaboration with Ariel Lin for the taiwanese version of Skip Beat... too bad this one is until next year... I want my crack now!

Pigeon Protection is a service that is free to any of the OT family... who abide by the rules and aren't using them for enemy infiltration... So of course you may borrow them. We'll have to list Heenim as yours, of course, and then we'll be fine! :)

Haha... It's ok viola, i won't take him away, he's my age and I'm more interested in older men, hahaha, it's just my love for Suju that has me calling almost all of them by their nicks^^
I'm more Heenim's(Kim Heechul) girl than anything^^ Plus even if he is yours, you'll have to deal with all the ogling eyes... he's too handsome not to be admired^^

Skip Beat is NOT happening.

99% certain that it's unadaptable by GTV (which explains the huge delay) and Ariel has officially dropped both dramas - Skip Beat and the prospective Coffee Prince Taipei Store. She's doing two movies next.

I don't think we'll see a Skip Beat adaptation in the near future. Not a single script was approved by the mangaka. Like I said before - LOVE to see it onscreen - impossible to adapt without take huge leaps from the original source material.

M3 will be completely deviating from the online manhwa, and Goong and Full House both were very very different then the manhwa storyline. It can be done, but the manga writer has to agree to it.

Dont hate me but that is great news!!! Skip Beat is a great manga and I would hate for it to get a lousy adaptation. I personally never believed Ariel could do the role justice and frankly, its hard to imagine any TW's actor who can capture her uniqueness. And the same goes for Ren's character as well.

I am glad Yoshiki Nakamura is taking part in the process and not allowing her work to be adapted without regards to the quality

I'm actually the exact opposite.

I don't like Skip Beat the manga - the execution is dreadful, draggy, random, and interminably long to get one point across.

What makes Skip Beat awesome, on the other hand, is the amazing story she is telling (Kyoko is a great heroine, and I love both Ren and Sho, lovelovelove).

I feel like Skip Beat is dying for a drama adaptation, minus all the weird and ridiculous crap dragging down the manga.

I don't think TW would do a bad job, and Ariel is the only TW actress that can do it. Rumors initially had Joe Cheng playing Sho and Jerry Yan playing Ren, but that fell through real early.

If TW doesn't adapt it, I doubt Korea will. It'll be up to the J-doramas to ever make it a reality.

I agree with you. I thought the manga dragged. the anime was good, but incomplete. A drama would be serious fun. And Siwon and Donghae playing the leads sort of got me excited for a moment. I could see that working. Ariel not so much. but both of those guys fit the look. And Siwon in OML was so very close to either of the male lead roles for this.

And I also agree a Jdorama is the most possible future option.

0

I know that's why I was so excited! I thought it would be better as a drama than it is as a manga, because it is quite draggy and I really just want them to get on with it... and well the eyecandy would have been awesome... and I agree about Ariel Lin being the only one that can do it! plus she does look really cute with Hae and Wonnie, I liked the music Video they made for her song Fireflies...

0

ah that's too bad... I hadn't read that info and since most of the posts on it seemed to be so sure on it happening... oh well I really was looking forward to it oh well at least there's still Athena and it's Ok, Daddy's girl...

So, posting in an Open Thread isn't something I usually do, I've posted on other threads before but for some reason the big, bad Open Thread scares me. It's like playing in the big kids' playground or jumping off the higher diving platform - exciting, but a little bit terrifying. Not that the people here are terrrifying don't get me wrong oh man see this is why ehh maybe i should stop typing - HOWEVER:

After spending about a week stalking the internet for any sign of Sungkyunkwan Scandal episode 19 with english subs, I have finally found it.

I am... complete.

I just thought sneak in a little post at the end of the Thred to let everyone know of this little moment of zen I am having before I go and watch it. If you live in a country where kdramas are less than accessible, I'm sure you can relate. I feel like I have achieved something, even if that is only a new level of internet-stalking tenacity.

Thank you, and good day.

HI Eleven11!
Are you really scared of US? I mean okay, we plan kidnappings, and may tend to overuse elephant darts on overzealous fangirls who lay grabby hands on our spouses, but only when the occasion calls for it! We are harmless, we swear!!!!! :)

Please, disregard Terry Pratchett's theory that states: "Five exclamation marks, the sure sign of an insane mind." :)

Okay, let's do the welcoming ceremony properly!

Welcome to OT Eleven11! I hope you will come out to play occasionally! We really are not that scary.*hugs* :)

In the Dirty South we have only one real Convention: Mid-South Con. Because we do not have megalopolises like the east and the west coasts of America, our Convention is a lot smaller. All of the big names like coming to it, and I've met a lot of authors and actors. Once, I sat up for half a night ('til 4 am) talking with Jane Fancher, CJ Cherryh, and the guy who got choked by Darth Vader on Star Wars... and it was just me and three other people in a hotel lobby (interesting conversation about religion and motivation). Earlier this year I met Sherrilyn Kenyon and talked with her for an hour about dyslexia. I've only been going for 10 years, but I have friends who have spent a night drinking with George Lucas, Stephen Spielburg, Kiefer Sutherland (who also likes playing Vampire the Masquerade), and Steve Jackson (who invented games like Munchkin and Chez Geek). Lots of convention celebrities like going to Mid-South Con because it's small and there's nothing like crazy Southerners.

Anyway, Terry Pratchett came three years ago, so I got to say howdy to him and he told some pretty neat stories about how people around the world view us (he tells this story about how people don't think Southerners know how to read) and his experiences in the South. It was great, in a very Terry Pratchett kind of sarcastic funny.

0

you. talked. to. C.J. Cherryh. I didn't think it was possible for your cred with me to go up any higher, but live and learn I guess. I adore Ms. Cherryh, especially her Fortress series and her Foreigner series. Now, if you say you have also met Michlle Sagara West.... I just might die. :)

Haven't met Ms. West... although I dig her books.

I'm uploading the picture of me and CJ Cherryh on FB now.

@everyone: naw, thanks for the hugs and welcomes! I did not expect so many replies, awesome! I went out and made a fool of myself last night, so I'm totally appreciating the virtual love atm =p

@brookeve: you sound like you have a badass life, totally jealous! I always make a fool of myself around celebrities -though that said, down here in New Zealand there aren't a hell of a lot of them around, so I sort of get away with it.. although I once ran across a road like a madwoman just to shake a local comedian's hand. I was slightly drunk at the time, and I'll never forget the shocked look on his face. I think I'm actually lucky to be tucked away down in this corner of the globe, away from embarrassing myself in front of a celebrity I truly respect. Heh. Though if I could meet the guy who got choked by Darth Vader... wow.

@lessaofpern: If I could have Jang Geun-Suk that would be very nice please thank you very much if he's not taken - but I think I'd have to piggyback him, not the other way around... I don't think I could live with being the one responsible for snapping his fragile body (and the daydreams of millions of fangirls) in half. "-.-

Thanks for the welcome, people - btw ep 19 was truly awesome and I'm back to my internet stalking ways for ep 20 (hehe) - and really loving all the talented recappers for their work, its a good way of staving off the withdrawals.

So, I love telling this story 'cause it gets me street cred with the kids I teach.

Justin Timberlake came to my birthday party.

(How it really happened)
There's this restaurant north of Memphis in a little town called Millington. I decided to have my birthday party there 'cause they have REALLY good margaritas there. My friends and I got a huge table, and we were all sitting around it when all of a sudden a whole bunch of girls started screaming.

I looked around, and I couldn't figure out what was going on. One of my friends pointed out to me that Justin Timberlake had just walked in with his mom and they were now sitting at a corner table. I looked around and, yup, there he was. None of us talked to him, but there was only a table between us so I get to say that Justin Timberlake came to my birthday party.

Required fields are marked *

I'm watching Giant. So are a handful of folks, not many, most are in Korea so it seems, as Giant is currently the #1 rated drama of the week.

Were you asking because you wanted to discuss? That would take about 100 OT comments, give or take a few. :-)

I can't believe it's been 50 episodes the the drama hasn't slacked off a single minute in execution or writing. And I'm not even bored with it.

Required fields are marked *

Yup, I was wondering if there was anyone watching. I couldn't find any blog or anything where anyone was doing a recap or even summary. I'm loving Giant! And like you said, excellent, excellent and very impressive presentation - in writing, directing, and acting! 50 episodes in and the fire that first started my interest for Giant is still going strong. The story is just very compelling. And even if there are cliche type elements sometimes weaved in (like falling in love with daughter whose father killed yours), I find the writer has a different way of presenting it that gives it a fresh air. Its like the writer gives the audience what we like and want to see, but then adds a very unique twist and suspense of its own! - I also enjoy watching Giant for all the realistic elements it has so excellently embedded thus far. Watching Giant, I think I learn more about people and the different human capacities and traits.

Its just sad that there is barely any discussion (or so I've found) on this extraordinary drama. Even on soompi, the thread has only a few posters.

-Sigh- Regardless, :) I hope I can enjoy Giant till the end. So far it has been nothing but a huge joy to watch--- hoping it stays like this or even turns better till its end. :) Giant hwaiting!

Me and supah have watched every episode since the first.....every week of every month and wow; it's been a long time. I can't believe we've hit the 50 episodes and (it should be over), but full steam ahead!

We talk about important plot points, non-important plot points, supah loves Cho(Jo) Pil Yeon, I rain schadenfreude all over Min-woos poor-backward-baseball-cap-wearing existence, and then there's 80s history references we point out and most importantly, the crap Jung-shik wears (bow-ties, sparkles, possibly dead animals; it's fashion at its finest hour)

Feel free to chime in on whatever - we're here, we're crazy, and we love Giant.

Subbing or recapping a 60-episode show is no easy feat. I don't know whether you'll be able to find anyone willing to do it, especially now that it's almost at the end of its run.
Plus, I think Giant is more of a seeing is believing kind of show, I'm partially glad it wasn't recapped. I would rather people watch it, whether now or 10 years down the line, to experience its magic. Recaps can't do it justice, yo!

So bro, have you watched any Saengchori, yet?
It's pretty hard to find, but I got ahold of it on AM-A, but it's on mp4 format so you'll need ye olde windows media player.
Verdict: Awesome! THIS is comedy. I'm kind of sick and tired of the rom-com genre, I find it pretentious and infuriating and... aaargh! But this is bliss.
And what is about Kim Hak-chul? Split my sides laughing hard at him watching SoML last weekend and felt that maybe he was being wasted in Giant, except in episode 50, he was totally awesome and now he's owning SC.

Uh, Bonfire/Guy Fawkes night over here, the fireworks still haven't stopped and it's annoying me. I'm an everything-grinch.

Hilarious! They all kind of popped up like tadpoles. No wonder he's all anally retentive about his work, he has that many siblings under his care.

LYE is playing another Yong-mi (her previous role) quite literally, the dress fittings (I kinda liked that dress...), seeing someone at work but keeping it hush-hush, the text messages at the bar, disapproving families, him being a bit of a prick. Not that I'm complaining. Plus prick is the purple smileyface dood (I just know it -- or is it the girl with the fly open?) and he'll get busted, so...

But yeah, luuurve it! Hate that it's only one episode a week though. Guh!

Btw, I love the cop! Recognise him from Giant's episode 20-21? Hope he comes back, and all the other underlings too. Giant's doing the dawn of a new era kind of thing with regards to Gang-mo, why not build up his empire with crooked but loyal underlings. Boo-yah! (I mean, as well as So-tae, Young-chul, Shi-dok.)

I'm still trudging through, have watched about 12 out of the 22 that have aired, and I'm officially besotted with Boy Meets Girl! I think it's just trumped Gye Choon Bin and Spy Trader.
1) Seo Shin-ae is adoooorable. She's definitely the girl version of Yeo Jin-gu, in terms of cuteness, talent and can go crumpling our hearts like something fierce.
2) J'adore the Hyun-choo character. Where can a girl find a guy like him? He's of the dork-with-a-big-heart kind, sorta like Kei from Love Shuffle.

0

I have Girl Meets Boy on the back burner; I'm sure Seo Shin-ae delivers. I haven't seen Spy Trader yet but I think I downloaded it and I'd like to see Family Secret when I can too.

Hey u guys. No thanks to daylight savings (i'm downunder), i'm posting my fri open thread on a sat afternoon. Cos i've been wanting to ask this question for a long time and now i hope there are still u guys out there reading to answer it for me.
I would like to know if the young lad falling for his noona an actual occurrence in the real-world korea. Cos i see it often in kdramas, and even in music vids - that is Seung gi's first major hit "becos u're my woman" Is age really a non-issue for koreans?

Cos if that is the case, how cool man.

Most of the world is slow to embrace difference in ages, esp that of an older women to younger men, Only now Cougars are becoming "mainstream". And yet, in cyberland Korea (which is the only place where i come into "contact" with everything korean), this seems accepted practice. So is this reflective of real-life korea?

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

I would refer to JB and GF's noona post on this site but from what I've read on the cyberworld, I don't think it is any more common in Korea as it is anywhere else. Drama in general take the unlikely scenarios in life and go with it.

I've seen my mother watch Indian dramas with some pretty wild scenarios that would never fly so well in real life so I'm assuming it's the same in Korea.

Is SKKS really as good as everyone says? I've been thinking about watching it but haven't really gotten to it. I kinda have bad experiences when coming to watching a drama everyone raves it great and stuff, but it just turns out to be boring. This happened to me with Goong. I watched it and it totally put me to sleep , I mean don't get me wrong, the acting was awesome and stuff but i think its cuz it was a historical drama. i also found the main girl sorta annoying at the end with her whole "I'm suffocating in this palace! I'm gonna runaway with your cousin who is also in love with me!" .......Anywhooo, do u guys recommend it? Not to mention i got a free SKKS poster at this Korean Festival so another reason for me to watch i guess.

Required fields are marked *

It wasn't as stuffy as Goong. For a historical drama it was pretty good. I really liked it because it didn't show the main girl as dumb and hopeless. She had the attitude, if you can do it I can do it better. She competed on equal terms with the boys in academics and sports. :D

My experience is when you watch something that many people has raved about, you come into it with higher expectation and some tend to look for flaws, too. And when that high expectation was not met or you did encounter flaws, the disappointment is such that you send the whole drama straight to back-burner.

That happens to me with YAB right from the opening when I saw the bumbling nun Minam. I HATE bumbling female leads and that made me stop from watching all of YAB, my loss.

My suggestion is try to watch it without any expectation (difficult, i know), one or two eps. If you like it, continue. You don't HAVE TO like what the majority likes as people do have different taste. But at least, see for yourself first before you decide.

ahah.. i understand that too. i remember watching My Girl after my friend raved it to me. and plus, i love rom com, so i was pretty excited to watch it. but it turns out, the first sight of yoorin had made me cringed my teeth.. i was like, ''what's wrong with her? she tried so hard to be cute, that it looks like retarded''. then, all the way to the end, i cant stand her & her fake eyelashes. its seriously disturbing.

so my advice it, go and try watch it. but keep your excitement low, or better have no expectation at all. SKKS is a good drama.

i'm kind of looking forward to it, and yet i'm sad that sungkyunkwan scandal is over. i know the lead from you're beautiful as a good actor, and although i haven't seen any of her work, i know moon geun young is known to be a good actress. the drama story sounds a bit weird, and it hasn't been explained much, but i'm sure it'll be fun, and i will definitely watch it.

JGS looks really pretty... I have a weakness for pretty men, which is why I'm so weak-kneed with Heechul, who JGS happens to be good friends with... when I showed my friends a pic of them to together... my friends thought they were pretty girls!! hahahaha

Anyways all this to say that I'm really looking forward to Mary stayed out all night... only because of JGS I really don't care for Korea's little sister...

I miss SKKS already.

And I'll be MIA for quite a while because of work. Crazy busy schedule, so I suppose it's a good thing there aren't that many dramas for me to follow (except for Dr. Champ and Mary) but I can't help it - I miss our Joseon Crack! What wouldn't I do to see another SJK or YAH smile?! I hope the Director's cut comes true. I'm still debating whether to get it because it's a bit of a hefty sum, and I'm low on cash reserves (thank you, Korean concerts) but would loooovvveee to see any extras. And I wonder how it would be changed if the director had his way...? (Without time constraints I mean)

I've gotta switch priorities to Japanese dramas for a while though, cos my Japanese exams are coming up (and there's no better way to get used to the language than dramas, I say!). Anyone got any current dramas they'd strongly like to recommend?

I'm watching only 2 this season. One is Ohgonno buta, 黄金の豚、the other one is Nagaraboshi 流れ星。They are both pretty good and only 45 minutes each(episodes wise) so, it does take a whole lot of your time. All the torrents are up to date!

Pan-da!

I was putting Pan with everything for weeks after that. And also "say it isn't so, joe?" So much quotable goodness from Love Shuffle. How can you go wrong when half of the leads bust out Dancing Queen in an elevator on the first episode. Love, lust, marriage, politics, psychology, dreams, futures and even some scifi. It is all there and all good. Total love for that show. Total Love.

Panda! Omo!
See that's the point where I dumped Ojiro and fell for the adorkable Kei.
LS was weird, seriously weird. But I <3'd it. Oddballsy doramas FTW. Which reminds me, I haven't watched one for aaages.

0

@ diadda & supah LOL I keep meaning to watch Love Shuffle, but haven't gotten around to it. It sounds kinda fun. Off the wall humour. I shall put it on my Watch-Now! List!

Will check out 流れ星 (Isn't it Nagareboshi?) too....sounds interesting...Thanks for the recommendation celestialorigin!

I'm actually watching Juui Dolittle (which, despite what everyone else has been saying about it, is really not half bad...at least the first episode has been decent) and Guilty but not much else at the moment...

0

I've been watching Nagareboshi and Guilty; I've seen two episodes of Juui Dolittle. (I've seen every episode 1 of every show this season except for that one with Shida Mirai and Iryu) Juui is not bad; it's just very procedural one-shot stories so I'd rather watch it when I have time.

supah: If you want oddball drama have you seen Manhattan Love Story, Kisarazu Cat's Eye or Jikou Keisatsu? They're all ...good. Then again I hated Love Shuffle so maybe you shouldn't listen to me.

Maybe I can get you to watch Atami no Sousakan, I've been meaning to watch it but didn't have the time. Someone said it was like a Japanese Twin Peaks. Hmm.

0

I did find LS strange, but whenever I think back to it, I remember some really cool and funny scenes, like the fairground one where they got the panda. So overall verdict is it's good. Would I love to watch another show like it? Yeah. But minus the incest references, adultery and Yuriko licking people's faces, even if it happens to be Matsu Shota, it's still ew.
Generally I think the Japanese have a knack for the oddball element, better than anything in Korean-ent. I find doramas remain consistent in their tone and don't amp up the angst factor as much as kdramas do. Which is probably why I find myself enjoying shows like HYD and Hana Kimi and yet tend to have an allergy to most Korean trendies.

0

hi!!!!!!!!!! i'm new to the open thread, so I don't really know what to write. i love kdramas!!!!!!!!!! normally i don't suffer from second-lead syndrome, and maybe its because i was in love with sungkyunkwan scandal's moon jae shin (therefore deeply upset that he won't get the girl) but after watching playful kiss and you're beautiful recently, i've become sort of angry at drama writers for making the second leads so nice and yet the girl is clueless and just argh because the main lead is just as good....lol, has that happened to anyone before? oh yeah, and does anyone have a cure for loving moon jae shin so much that i smile like an idiot just by thinking about him?
:)

Hi simplesim-moni

The koala babies are thriving, but I've been delinquent in documenting their newfounded abilities to debate with me the merits of eating candy, not practicing the piano, and all sorts of arguments that make zero sense to anyone but them.

I'll upload new vids when I get a chance, promise. :-)

Okay, 1000 Years of Love - wow, that is a drama I haven't had a chance to talk about in a long long time.

Thundie almost disowned me for even mentioned its name in the sageuk post, and it WAS 100% tongue-in-cheek.

1000 Year's of Love is about as much as sageuk as You're Beautiful resembles a classic K-melodrama like Winter Sonata.

I remember, vividly the conversation, but cannot for the life of me find the OT, where I watched 1000 Years, got wasted beyond belief (a few glasses of red wine, add drunk bc I couldn't believe what I was watching), and then had one of the funniest discussions with belleza on this drama.

While I was hosed, belleza had her wits about her and I remember reading her take on this drama and laughing until I cried. Literally.

1000 Years is a time-travel drama produced by SDS with the budget of about a high school musical. So Ji Sub is both a decadent and loserish Baekche general and in modern times the world's worst fashion designer.

Sung Yuri made her screen debut from Fin.K.L. cutie-patootie to wannabe actresss in this drama - and she is slapped and grabbed six-ways to Sunday while doing the OPW simultaneously decreeing that all the men around her must die because she is a displaced Baekchae princess and they all peasants lower than dirt.

Even The Voice has a part - doing god knows what, supporting SJS's madness perhaps. I don't know the purpose or intent of this drama, only that is probably is the single worst K-drama I have ever watched in my entire life.

And the most unintentionally entertaining. The only two other dramas to comes close to this level of entertaining are Stairway to Heaven and Bad Love.

Hope this helps - stay away from 1000 Years unless you need or want to play a drinking game. It's terrible.

If you want to help counter your SKKS withdrawal, I suggest watching another oldie - Sang Doo, Let's Go to School, or Thank You.

Hope you have time to upload new vids. Is it time to jump the huge pile of autumn leaves in the backyard? Wish I was there myself...:-P

I have a boatload of videos I need to upload and clean up. Yet another item on my to-do list.

1000 Years is entertaining actually, for the sheer badness value and how weird it is to see So Ji Sub and Lee Seon Kyun hamming it up and swimming in the drama-kiddie pool.

Sung Yuri really wasn't the worst acting performance in that drama. The nation of Baekchae must be rolling in its grave to see how it was depicted here.

I am thankful this collaboration looks promising, better than all those BTS I've seen of Dennis Oh representing a collaboration between Mainland China and Korea in another version of All About Eve. Eek. I pity Dennis Oh in this new show.

It's been a while, I like the song of the day. Thank you JB. I've been entranced by TLC's OST more than anything else, plus SHINee's "Hello" song. Ahhhhh~

OMGGGGGGGG! Park Sang-won and Choi Min-soo are considering re-teaming for Faith. Faith has already confirmed Kim Hee-sun (meh!) and Philip Lee (hottie of SOAM and Secret Garden). Have no idea about the premise. May suck (shrug).

Oh, Kim Soo-hyun, must you star in THAT thing? Can you not join your screen abheoji in the above drama instead? Sigh, the price of landing a lead role. And to think he was revelling amongst the industry's heavyweights in previous projects. I'm depressed about it but will watch it anyway, plus there's solace in the cow farmer element. Hope he doesn't become another PSM, who in the 20 years post-Kim Doo-han and pre-Lee Seong-mo played a series of forgettable roles. 20 years is a long time, pretty tragic really. And hey, bit of trivia, PSM's first TV lead role was that of a cow farmer who goes on to chase his dream of becoming a champ swimmer. In which he played hyung to Kim Jung-hyun/Jung-shik, yeah bet no one knew those two once played brothers.

Chill out, you're cool. Hanging out with other girls doesn't make you a lesbian. Appreciating and enjoying another girl's beauty does not make you a lesbian. I think plenty of girls are pretty, but I married a man and I'm very happy with him.

Enjoy life! Only pay attention to what your close friends and relatives think, because they are the ones who truly matter in life. If you are a lesbian or not you will still find people who love and care about you. On this site, we love you... but you have to put up with the fact that we're all insane.

I agree with brookeeve: just chill!! We're all crazy here. Looking at an actress and thinking she's gorgeous means nothing. I do it all the time, whether or not I'm watching dramas. In fact, ever since someone told me that "the body is a piece of art, appreciate it." Whenever I see a person, random things like "I like her nose" or "That shade of purple is excellent on him" will pop into my head. It's not an indicator of which way I swing.

Appreciating beauty in any form is logical and normal. But as Yummy says in SkkS. "You want to get closer... to touch" Yeah if that feeling comes up, you may have to reevaluate your orientation. Whatever your preferences in the end you are accepted here. So enjoy your fangirling on all the kpop girls you like.

Of course you know I have a vid for that!

Oh darling, *hugs* I am sorry that the people you go to school with are utter losers. Thinking women pretty doesn't automatically make you a lesbian! It could be that you are just shy around men and find it more comfortable to hang out with girls.

Or, it just might be a cultural difference. I was born in an East Asian country, and it is absolutely normal to see men walking around hand in hand, hugging and just being affectionate. They think nothing of it, and see it as just part of friendship. Girl's were the same too, I walked to school with my best friend arm in arm.

So, I had a pretty big culture shock when I came here. In Junior High people called me a lesbian, and I had to look it up in a dictionary to see what it meant! :) It came as a pretty big shock, seriously, I didn't have any concept of homosexuality.

The sad thing was, I had a raging crush on one of the boys who tormented me, but, off course I would DIE before I would tell any real boy I like him! Which is still true, that's why Siwon is my husband ;)

I guess I can laugh about it in retrospect, but it was pretty brutal back then. I was incredibly shy and developed a phobia of people even looking at me. I hated crowded places and hated leaving the house. But, I found my peeps in high school and now I am probably the most outgoing people you can ever find. I am sure that you will find your kindred spirits, the people who speaks to your heart. :)

All that being said, even if you romantically like girls...who cares? We certainly don't!
love and hugs and cookies!! :)

Fictional character Kdrama related or ever. Ever is complicated for me. (Harley Quinn- codependent sociopath who would have guessed right?)

K-related it is fairly easy to understand Kim Rae Won's character in My Little Bride. He is cute, adorable, sexy and seriously complicated. While the plot is a bit disturbing from an ew she is only how old perspective. The acting by his character in every scene is captivating and fun.

Um.... Kang Bok Gu from A Love to Kill. I want him.

I would go ahead and put Hwang Taekyung on your college application. It will make you stand out from other people, and show that you are open to enjoying other cultures. You might need to write a few sentences to explain who he is or why you like him if there is room for that, or it might make them need to do a Google search real quick; in any case, they will definitely enjoy seeing something that isn't run of the mill. College is the best time to declare your individuality, and if you are already doing that then the admissions board will become more interested in you.

OK den rambutan, I will share de SoML love.
OK, this is probably going to be quite long.

Special of My Life (2006), a review:
This is an eight-episode MBC comedy series and it is CLASSIC.
Written by Kim Yoon-yeong, who has twice paired up with Sandglass, Eyes of Dawn writer Song Ji-na. So you expect some level of qualite, and you get it.
The real treasure however, lies in the excellently cast actors. Where do I even start?

-- Kim Seung-woo plays a stubborn, dilligent cop with a devilish streak.
His backstory: recently became a widower and a single father. He was too busy running around a supermarket trying to arrest some guy to answer his wife's very last frantic phone call, before the train she was in blew up. He's still guilty about that.

-- Myung Se-bin plays a fiesty prosecutor. Though quite klutzy and endearing. She's very close friends with KSW, she even lives with him, and is surrogate mother to his toddler son.
Backstory: She's been in love with KSW since childhood, but was too tomboyish and geeky for his tastes, he went on to date a 'prettier' girl, who he was besotted and later married her. Ahan -- heartache.
I adore her: in this snap she is SO me, like when I'm crying over a certain character in a certain 60-episode epic. http://i789.photobucket.com/albums/yy176/supah5/Special%20of%20My%20Life/20.jpg

-- Sung Ji-roo plays a gangster, who is fiercely loyal to his Hyungnim, played by an endearing little old man in a red tailored suit, straw hat, floral print shirt, and white shoes. SJR's a little hapless and unintentionally creates a lot of trouble for said Hyungnim.
Backstory: Abandoned as a baby, raised in a monastery as a Buddhist monk. He had a pure heart but he was a rather errant child, not fit for a monk lifestyle, he beat up kids, hatched up clever little schemes to smuggle in meat to feast on. One day, Hyungnim and the gangpae came to visit the monastery and there came SJR's window of opportunity, to escape the monastery and become a gangpae 4 lyfe.

-- Shin Sung-woo: plays a crooked lawyer. A bit of a greasy ahjusshi who drives a lime green convertible and owns the biggest collection of garish Le Coq Sportif t-shirts the world over.
Backstory: He's a halmoni's boy at heart, and keeps up pretenses in front of her that he's one of Seoul's most successful lawyers. Halmoni is none other than the adorable Kim Yeong-ok (of Sandglass, Gloria, Chuno, God of Study).
(Side note: How I would've LOVED it if SSW had taken up Kim Soo-ro's role in God of Study instead? He plays the struggling, small-time lawyer with so much finesse, charisma... It would've been awesome to see him opposite Bae Doo-na again and his rockstar snarl and patented smirk would've scared all the kids away. Yeah, even Yoo Seung-ho.)

The above four individuals all have a history together, a friendly one or otherwise and go on to form a unit -- eventually. And oh, what a team they make.

-- Kim Roe-ha: plays the antagonist in this tale, as a gangster underling to Hyungnim, except he's crafty, cunning and eyes the latter's position.
Also, one of his henchmen is none other than Comrades' Lieutenant...? Erm, the guy stood behind KRH in this snap anyway. http://i789.photobucket.com/albums/yy176/supah5/Special%20of%20My%20Life/64.jpg

There's also Kim Hak-chul as a pretty skillful burglar who joins the quartet -- and is as hysterical as the rest of them! (And there are many other Giant faces here, including Jae-chun.)

There are a dozen other characters who hold their weight, no matter how small their role. Like Baek Il-sub who plays Myung Se-bin's father. Or the little old lady who plays Hyungnim's Noonim with a fiery temper who terrifies gangsters and beats them with wooden ladles, brooms and other household things.

I think the story isn't particularly extraordinary, but it's the actors, the outrageous comedy sequences and Ocean's 11-parody heists that make the show. There's just never a dull moment, as it's frame by frame hilarity and best of all, it has heart, and soul!

A couple of my favourite moments are:
The one where we learn SJR's backstory, where's he's still a monk. http://i789.photobucket.com/albums/yy176/supah5/Special%20of%20My%20Life/18-1.jpg
The night the gangpae come to stay at the monastery is pure gold, like when the bell rings and they wake up in alarm and run out looking like this. http://i789.photobucket.com/albums/yy176/supah5/Special%20of%20My%20Life/17-1.jpg

Another one is one of SJR and SSW's many car scenes, they need to get to someone in a hurry, so SSW revvs up the engine and speeds like a maniac, going over the sidewalks and crazy stuff. SJR all caught up with the excitement yells out to the public: ''this guy is a craaaazy bastard, a real speed demon... just look at him gooo....'' and POP! The engine cops out. Hahaha! http://i789.photobucket.com/albums/yy176/supah5/Special%20of%20My%20Life/41-1.jpg
But then an ambulance vehicle drives past so they bribe its driver to let them on, and you know how the ambulance can take over traffic. Haaah! But too late, KSW gets to their man first. Their plans - foiled. D'oh!

Oh and SJR's fight scenes, seriously everyone needs to see this guy's flying kicks: http://i789.photobucket.com/albums/yy176/supah5/Special%20of%20My%20Life/40.jpg

But truly, no matter what I write about it, it just won't do it justice, so...
Here's a picture of the three main guys at a pojangmacha. Luvs dem all. http://i789.photobucket.com/albums/yy176/supah5/Special%20of%20My%20Life/67.jpg

* For Neda*
(Neda Agha-Soltan (RIP) January 23, 1983 – June 20, 2009 )

The 2010 HBO documentary “For Neda” examines her tragic death at the hands of a member of the Basij militia, later identified as Abbas Kargar Javid.

She was gun down on June 20, 2009 after the unrest that follow the 2009 Iranian presidential election.

The cellphone video that capture the last moments of her life was uploaded in YouTube as Time magazine describe it as;
Quote. “Agha-Soltan's bloody, panicked last moments, captured by a mobile-phone camera and uploaded to the Internet, turned into probably the most widely witnessed death in human history.”

I will abstain from making any personal comments since I know that I may offend some people in this 'Great Forum.'
But all I can do is to give you the link so that somehow her death will not be a waste not only for the people of Iran, but for us all who live in places where the right to cast our vote does not put us in peril of loosing our lives. I Am Neda!!!!!

Welcome hun!
It was seriously, golden! Enjoyed every minute of it and it definitely makes my favourites list. Sorry I couldn't sub it and share the love further. :(
But SSW is seriously smexay in it, you should totally check him out in it. Any other guy sporting that hair and it would've been intolerable, but it's HIM! xD
Have you watched Home Sweet Home yet? This is the first time I'm going to say this about him, but there's finally something he cannot carry off. It's that beard, I honestly hate it. Have you seen it yet?

I was worried about JGS in MSOAN, the girls curls in the photos were just not working for me. Luckily the man knows how to work them on film, wow what a difference. Androgyny suits him perfectly here, Very very hot! Thumbs Up! Bonzai! Hurrah! Amen! Encore! You have me hooked and watching this with one scene. Thank you for this distraction from my missing SkkS.

I was so afraid the plot line would fall flat. Glad people here are liking the drama so far! (Hey, it's the first episode, but still! It's hope!)

The plot is predictable and hence a bit dull, but they are acting out what they are given very well. She's being her usual adorable self, JGS is being hotter that he was in Hong Gil Dong, which I honestly thought would be impossible for him to achieve in my eyes. The rest of the cast hasn't gotten much screen time yet, but from what I see it looks good.

Giant 51:
[SPOILERS!]
Yeah, great episode, an enthralling hour, as usual.
CPY was his sharpest yet. Jung-shikee brought on the AWESOMESAUCE! Why is it all the best catfights and tet-e-tets go down at the Royar Crub these days? It's the place to be.

But I'm mortified. Mortified! At what they may be insinuating with one particular character. They make this character an enigma, nay, a legend. And then they wee all over their own creation, in the 11th hour? Why? And with that cutesy mood music, why? They were meant to take it all the way.
I have cause for concern, because they've been quite strategic with their casting and that girl? She played KSH's girlfriend in Father's House.
But I may be overacting. Maybe this is just to... reiterate episode 8, like they've had to do a couple of times in the past. It IS a lengthy show and the 97% of the 30% viewers are ahjummas -- with Alzheimer's and they need to be retold why a certain characters are a certain way and that they've chosen a very specific path and thus can't be like normal people. And... that all this is just a small plot point with a purpose of driving that point further. Pleasepleasepleasepleeeeeaseletthatbeit!?!? Plus, that person has that name to live up to, too.
Man! Ugh!

I've been watching this older American show called "The Nanny" and they always make fun of soaps and their ridiculous plot lines.

"I haven't watched this show in six months! Catch me up."
"Well, they still haven't left Barbara's party but--"

Always cracks me up, lol.

Staples, haha, I'm sure it's a riot. However, the show I'm whinging about, I still LOVE---LOVELOVELOVE! <3 <3 <3. It's just I'm seeing one little thing I don't like, I mean, there is SOMETHING, and while it's not a threat right now, I feel that maybe that something may become something more important than I'd like it to become later. I'm thinking too far ahead is all. I just hope tonight's episode will alleviate these fears.

Bro4lyfe: I want it to be suspicious, too! Dammit! I'm not happy (for the first time ever with Giant, I'm not happy). Will only forgive if it's suspicious OR just a fleeting thing with only one specific storytelling purpose. Or maybe it's the equivalent of spottyface Gyeong-ja and GM, which is also sorta acceptable, though a little 'meh' but still acceptable. See how forgiving I am?
Superficial note: I quite liked MW's Micheal Corleone armchair poses this episode. Rawr!

As much as I love Giant, and I do. I am having a major issue. What kind of school are they sending my adorable little WJ to? How many strange men have shown up, glommed on to this kid and even taken him off of school grounds? Say what? Doesn't anybody watch this kid?

As much as I hate to admit it, my oldest son started school when he was 4 years old. In 1984. Even then they watched those kids like hawks because they were so young.

Of course I was only six at the time. At least thats my story and I'm sticking to it! In a few more years he'll be older than I am! :)

Gah! Watching MSOAN in the raw had me giggling, though I might as well have been watching a mime show for all I understand of Korean! I love how JGS brings the weird (in the best possible sense) to leaven the physical beauty of his characters. It's as if he has to work harder to avoid being upstaged by his own good looks (umm KHJ anyone?) and from some quirk of synergy the AWESOME WEIRD happens! See: blood being licked off hand, kale-like plant being presented to MGY and uncurling himself from his tootsie roll sleeping accommodations. Like diadda above, I was worried after seeing the stills, but many of my fears have been assuaged. Onward ho drama!

Just had a horribly k-drama moment wanted to share with my OT family. So I'm writing a story and at one point one guy has to betray the other, so I was brainstorming and I honestly wrote this without thinking:

On the final day of payment, Frank gets Don to meet him by a river

and then the minute I saw what I wrote I added without even pausing to think:

(nothing good happens by the river, lol)

MLIKD
(My Life is K-Drama)

Anyone else have any MLIKDs?

OHMAHGAAHH! Giant! Vous etez sur la f'ai'yah!! Literally!
[SPOILERS!]
Now, I would have got on my feet and applauded show, really would have, but there is still one minute reservation. (That for a small moment there was sheer daily drama WTFery, but at least we know it's suspicious now -- but it hasn't allayed my fears any... Gahhh!)
Otherwise, wow, even Hwang Tae-sub owned it, this episode. HTS and JS: perfect! HTS speaking of JS with KO: perfectER -- he may just have redeemed himself with three of those words alone, seriously tear inducing. And then HTS with SM: PERFECTION!

And the Gang-mo V Min-woo rivalry -- rendered speechless.

It's all like ''Cho Pil-yeon's son, comin atchya, bitcheeees!!''
He resisted. He tried to be reasonable. He asked very nicely, repeatedly. Gang-mo, the snob, said he'd kill him if he even tried. Mi-joo said he's like his dad. Oh wait... rewind. She said what? OMO! That's just something you NEVER, ever say.
Alas! Spawn of the devil it is.

Man, I'm a little confused about my life. When it rains it pours and right now, I'm drowning. The last two weeks have been the worst two weeks of my life, but things are beginning to look good again, sooo...
I HATE indecisive people, hate them, but first time in my life, I'm one of them. I'm stuck in major quandary and don't know what to do. Am I foolish to follow my heart? Feeling obliged iswhat's REALLY foolish, right?
Yeah, that's right. I've decided. Except...
Aaaarghh! I hate this.

@88.1 Supah, I'll definitely take a peek at SSW in Story of My Life, based purely on your word about his smexay-ness. Did I tell you you're great? For sharing the SoML love? Well, you are. Thanks!

Home Sweet Home? No. And if you don't dig his beard and look there, I won't touch it. Gosh, I'm so out of sync with the Kdrama loop, so behind! Have watched only ep. 7 of SKK Scandal (understand where all those oohs and aahs are coming from. My poor old heart sometimes forgot to breathe, too). And I haven't even started Giant (well, yes, episode 1)! Aargh! GLORIA is still occupying my time - big time. Episode 27 - I melted.

I've watched 27, yeah, I was annoyed as heck at BDN in that episode but then... Kang-suk! Aigooo! I melted too!
Man, I am officially snowed under with current dramas, for the first time, ever! I'm watching six current shows! SIX!

Well, once Secret Garden starts this weekend, it'll be six. :s

*Lemon Incest*

I first came across this song back in 1984 when Serge Gainsbourg (2 April 1928 – 2 March 1991 RIP) release this song in his album 'Love on the Beat '.

What made this song a success was the controversy surrounded this song since not only deals with the 'taboo' subject of 'incest', but is sang as a duet with his 12 year old daughter and she also appears with him in the MV that shows
a shirtless Serge wearing only a pair of jeans while his daughter Charlotte wears his shirt and white panties laying in bed together.

Holy Crap!!! What is Amg1 ranting about???? You may asked yourself!!!!!!!

Well I been meaning to write this for quite some time but I was not in the right frame of mind nor did a had the time, so here we go.

'Incest' the forbidden subject that we all “Love to Hate.”

The mere word of 'incest' can bring many feelings to the surface from a “visceral sickening” one the one of “allure and excitement.

Which ever feeling this word may provoke in your innermost being, let me say that you are not alone.

Incest has been around since humans arrive on this earth, and I am willing to suggest that it will remain among us long after I am dead and gone.

There are laws in most country's to deal with this interfamilial dilemma. I am not taking any sides other than to say that I am a firm believer in keeping with the laws of the land.

There have been many cultures in the past that have condone 'Incest' as a viable form for “Racial Purity”, or as a form of 'Monarchic' transcendence as it applies to assuring the next generations of Kings Or Queens, I happened to live in Hawaii for ten years, and as a matter of historical knowledge we know that the Hawaiian Monarch could only marry his/her brother or sister, it was “forbidden” hence the Polynesian word “Taboo”, for them to marry outside the family unit, the same with the Egyptians, and later some of the European monarchs as in the case of John V, d'Armagnac (1420–1473) who eventually marry his sister Isabelle of Armagnac having fathered three offspring’s from that relationship, even Crown Prince Sado was accused about many other things of having “incestuous relationship” with at least one of his sisters.

The main reason why “Science” looks down upon incest is the reality that the contrary is true. “Incest does not produce a better genetic pool” on the other hand incest degrades the gene pool to such an extent to the point of extinction, as proven by many breeders, when it comes to proper animal husbandry, or as is the case with plants.

We all have heard “Nightmare” story’s of incest and I will not deny that “rape' should not be condone as and expression of a sexual relationship in any context, but the larger question remains the same, what about a “Consensual” relationship where two adults agree to engage in a sexual relationship that happen to be Brother/Sister?

Not only the American media but most “Telenovelas, Dramas” from all around the world are if you want to used the word “guilty” of using the “Incest” theme either as a subplot or as their main subject matter for the story line as in “A Million Stars Falling From The Sky (2002)” J-Dorama with actor Kimura Takuya who at that time was one of Japans most famous male actors.

It sounds like a cliché when people say that in order for a K-Drama to be a successful Melodrama it has to have at least one subplot dealing with incest, and in most cases that its true.

Religion and Philosophy have attempted in the past to explain the complexities of this subject, and in some instances they have made it even harder to understand when in one hand the condemn the act, but in the other hand the condone it with open arms, as in the case of “Lot and his daughters” (Genesis 19:23-25, 30-36 , NLT). The Greeks, Romans, Indians, Celts, and such where more forgiving, since the “Pantheon of their Goods” where famous for having all combination's of “Incestuous” relationship e.g. Father/daughter, brother/sister and the list goes on and on.

So what to make of the subject in general terms?

Well I think that it does go both ways, if treated with a morbid kinda approach we will get a very negative reaction on the whole subject, but I do believe however the complexity of the subject it can be done in such a way that at least we can empathize with the characters at some level, as in the case with “A Million Stars Falling From The Sky”, I am not saying that all people who engage in this practice need to die at the end in order to sympathize with them, but at least the subject is being explore as opposed to sweep it under the rug!!!!!!

Last but not least! Can you mention at least 3 dramas where “Incest” is used as the main plot or as a subplot?

*DISCLAIMER* I am not “Pro Incest” what ever that means!!!

Even at age 12, Charlotte was a better actress than singer, but Serge certainly knew how to use the PR machine. Her voice hasn't developed all that much in the intervening years, but I do like her latest collaboration with Beck, IRM. And Serge? As you say, RIP.

I love her rendition of 'Bob Dylan's' "Just Like A Woman", and yes Charlotte Gainsbourg has always been a better actress than a singer as in her her portrayal of 1994 Franco Zeffirelli adaptation of Jane Eyre, or winning best actress at both (Cannes Film Festival Best Actress Award
Bodil Award for Best Actress) for her role in the film "Antichrist"!!!!!!

Three incest plots? Kdrama only? Cause if we open that up to Jdrama it gets ridiculously high in number. But Ok Kdrama only:

Autumn in My Heart - Not actually related but raised as brother and sister only to find out about baby switching.

That's it. That is the only one I know. yeah you get some weird other things out there that get close to it but never quite cross the line. "Who Are You?". The father's spirit is inside the love interest for most of the show.

Kdramas do have red herrings galore with adoptions everywhere. but nope I have never seen a full kdrama story line on incest other than Autumn in My Heart.

A list of all the K-dramas have that done fauxcest, ranked in the order of ickiness.

http://ockoala.wordpress.com/2010/06/08/%e2%80%9cfauxcest-is-the-best%e2%80%9d-2/

Only few have skirted really close, but most are fauxcest in the end.

A few are missing in the post but added in the comments section by other eagle-eyed drrama watchers.

There's about a good 20 dramas or so that do this subject matter in some fashion.
