Yay! Finally, an Open Thread! Been waiting for this to listen to your song choice. I've been collecting and listening to the songs in this thread! Love them all!

Hehe. It's Friday again. But, it's already night in my place. It was pretty much a calm and chaos day for me. Sigh.. But, at least I got it over. Can't wait for tomorrow to come. One of my best friends is getting attached tomorrow! Hopefully everything goes right!

And.. Just read about the change of writer for MSOAN. Hopefully the episodes will be much better with the new one. It's a waste to have JGS, MGY and KJW in one series, but poor story plot. GO GO K-DRAMA! ;)

and, happy weekend to all! ;D

random thoughts?

i think the Beanies (awards, not us) votes tend to lean more towards the dramas that are more recent. when i was voting, i couldn't even remember anymore how much i liked choi siwon in Oh My Lady haha! couldn't compare him objectively to how much i like yoochun in SKK! (wow, big issues i got huurr LOL)

i'm good with MSOAN changing writers. that ship was going downhill FAST. MGY has been wasted on what could possibly 2 of the most overrated dramas this year. :(

i got so much stuff to do before midterm ends pre-christmas, but i'm already full-on into the chill in the wind and the warmth of my blanket. HELP! someone kidnap my professors and take them to see ebeneezer scrooge please!!!!

You know what's interesting, though? The hype around both of MGY's projects this year have been because SHE's the lead in them. Less so for MSOAN, but the fact remains that we probably would be less hyped for it if she wasn't in it. It's not like she needs to pick better projects: both series were great on paper, but fell flat in the execution, and you can't always tell going in how it's going to end up. It's just her bad luck that she took on two projects that failed to live up to expectations. At least CS had decent ratings - I don't see MSOAN getting more than a 10% at the highest by the end of the year, even with the writer switch.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

I agree with you with everything. I think it's kind of late for MSOAN to get good rating, but I hope for the better story that will end up well and get better critics. I want it to compare to 'You're Beautiful' that got a lot of love outside Korea that made JKS to be very popular internationally. I'd like to see MGY like that with JKS along the way. She really deserve it.

Happy Friday Everyone!!!

I got mistaken for a high school student yesterday afternoon, and it made my day ;). Phew. For a second there, I was convinced I was turning into a grandma.

Anyone else here watch Runaway? Gah! I did NOT like the finale. Maybe I'd be more open to the series if Rain like stripped nude in the DVD version, and someone strangled Jinny with their bare hands leaving her squawking like a chicken. Grrr.

Yeah, why did the GOOD loveline in the drama have to suffer the death of one of its participants! The only one with a rational, thinking brain! Bah, I was so mad. They totally killed the wrong girl. PLUS there wasn't even a decent kissing scene to make up for all the teasing since episode four or whatever when he kissed her and she threatened to kill him if he did it again. Ah, so much potential, so not delivered...But I liked Rain's haircut, at least.

my mother is somewhat like that too... because I turned 23 and my mom is already saying I look like I'm 30, but only she says that because she's my mother and likes to nitpick about me not having a boyfriend or interest in anybody for that matter (well anybody that's not an actor, or K-pop artist), and that at my age she had already been dating my father for 3 years, and that she wants to have grandbabies before she's 55 so that she's not a completely old grandma thank you very much... etc... i'm starting to think so too, but i find Hyun Bin and Ha Ji Won immensely entertaining. After reflecting on the recent eps after I watch it I find that nothing much actually happens.

Required fields are marked *

Funny you should say that, when I watch in a public place (ie the library) and I can't really laugh out loud or make snarky comments, the drama feels overrated. But when I'm at home and being snarky and laughing to my heart's content, the drama is amazing.

Weird that what I can do in response changes my opinion so much.

Required fields are marked *

Yeaah, at first I was totally into it. And Hyun Bin and Ha Ji Won are amazing. But I have yet to watch episode 8 and I don't feel like I HAVE to watch it. Same with Mary Stayed Out All Night. Though MSOAN did pick up on episode 8.

0

I won't say it's overrated. the writing, acting, execution etc. are pretty solid. but despite all that, i, personally, cannot get into it. its frustrating really, coz SG is the kind of drama that i usually dig...

It's your choice if you don't want to watch the Iris. :)
As for me, I prefer Athena vs. the later. For a very simple reason: there are /is actor/s in Iris that i can't stand watching (not mentioning the name/s to give due respect to those who admires the actor/s)
Anyways, if ever it'll have a recap.I'd say, Thanks.

i adore Siwon, but he's doesn't do much in Suju.. i LOVE Kyuhyun for his voice tho.. that boy can sing so freaken beautifully it's almost sinful... but i'm all for making young boys sin. LOL. not to mention he's not bad on the eyes cuz he's so adorbs too!!

@ pohonphee
if you manage to kidnap a few suju members, can you see if Leeteuk and Kyuhyun are a part of those captured? i would be forever indebted to you :D

0

If we're putting in Suju kidnaps requests, I'd like to play with Heechul for a minute!

0

@lb_tmi:
From Suju sub group KRY which were consisting 3 lead singers in Suju, I found out Yesung and Kyuhyun voice are my fave, I can point out which are their voices among other, I like them. but ryeowok though many people say his voice is good, yes it is good I'm agree, but it is just passable to my ears. Make exception for Siwon, though his voice is good but passable, I still can point out his voice, ha, ha thats when my K drama addiction interfere.
You must have heard SM Ballads. :)

Ok so I make a list:
One Siwon for viola
Two Leeteuk and Kyuhyun for you
One Heechul for me

Anybody have request too?
it will be a waste if I come to this concert and go home without some *souvenirs* for everybody... :D

0

@ brookeeve: I can lend you Heechul for A minute :P

0

You can keep Heechul, I just wanted to admire him for a minute. I wouldn't cheat on my TOP.

0

I am sorry if this offends you sis, but Heechul seriously messes with my boy/girl radar, especially when I look at the pictures when he had long red hair....

0

hey let me borrow heechul for a minute too! I want a personal performance of Superman =)

0

@ pohonphee

it's a good thing you're borrowing the plane. imagine if you had to stuff all of them in your suitcases. LOL!

i love Suju-KRY!! tho i agree RW's voice is a little high, he is very very talented. i also like YS's voice.. but of course. Kyu is my ultimate fave... and i LOVE LOVE LOVE him and MY Jonghyun in SM the ballad. which has fueled a new semi-obsession for Jay from Trax. whoever came up w/ putting ultimate ballad singers together to blow my mind is pure genius!!!

@ viola

heechul may make me worried because he's so much more prettier than i am, but he's got one awesome personality that it surpasses anything else for me.. he's so freaken awesome as a person, i can look past his beauty. :D

0

@ viola: that's why I like Heechul for he can mess with somebody's boy/girl radar. rawr

0

Androgyny has never bothered me. In fact, in most Native American cultures (hermaphrodites are rather common among us) we view them as a sacred being, able to communicate between the worlds of men and women, spirits and humans, those who have died and those who are alive. Our view on sexuality is pretty different... of course, that was one of the first things that truly offended those that conquered us. With the Lakota, most kids didn't even choose if they were going to be a man or a woman until they were 12. My mom's got a little girl in her kindergarten that all the kids think is a boy because that's what she wants to be.

Sorry, totally random. What's that saying? Social studies teachers, we have issues!

0

My up dated list:

One Siwon for viola
Two Leeteuk & Kyuhyun for lb_tmi
ONE Heechul for me, brookeeve, and myweithisway (A minute with brookeeve, A minute with myweithisway, the rest of minutes with me, others can mention name and stand in line)

@lb_tmi: Jonghyun : his voice is the lucifer, tat, tat, tat, tat, miracle mukkin chae, get, get, get autotunic, voiceholic

0

Unnie, I learn the most interesting things from your "random" comments. I have no problem with the androgyny either, I like my men pretty :)

0

@brookeeve... I'm going to cry >_< I'd requested Heenim be protected by your pigeons... but now you've taken him away! ::cries::

0

You seem to think that there is only one Legion of my pigeons, when this is just not the case. Heenim is still protected, do not worry. I have approximately 213 different Legion of Psychic Pigeon, and they can operate independently of each other and in different countries. You're covered, so no more tears, okay?

0

Whoa whoa! Why are y'all lending MY Heechul around?? LOL. To think I just took a nap and woke up and there's all this lending and borrowing of Suju members already.

Well anyway if anyone's interested in the concert, like I said, I have a spare ticket, and I probably will be selling it @ cost. (It's a pretty decent view.) So, like, let me know. Pigeons get in free, brookeeve ;)

(Yeah, I'm not an ELF either, so why am I going to this concert, I will never fathom...)

0

Shinee and suju members! OOOOoo!!

Is it too late to put in my order? I would like one Onew and a side order of Donghae and while we are at it, give me an extra large Shindong.(he's funny and cute).

0

@ Diadda: No, you are not late. the concert is still in January. I can add your request on the list:

One Siwon for Viola
Two Leeteuk & Kyunhyun for lb_tmi
One for me, brookeeve, myweithisway, minnetter, rainerust (everyone will have A minute with Heecheul except ME minutessss, ha, ha, ha)
Two Donghae & Shindong for Diadda

I don't know if I can kidnap SHINee members. The last time they were coming to my country, it had been a tragedy. they got scratched and one of them got ankle injury. I'm afraid they won't come again. But if they really come again and hold their concert not just showcase, I will do as everybody request and save them from naughty fangirls. They sing me Noona nomu yeoppo anyway...melt > o <

0

Sorry about the Onew wish. Any reference to SM concerts and my brain goes "Onew! Where is Onew!" took me a second to process the entire conversation. Yes, just Suju members is fine. 13 in korea, plus the mainland expansion pack. And thank you for adding my selections.

I promise the videos I release after I have them will be tasteful.

Enjoying the warm Arizona December today with a nice cup of coffee. Hope everyone has a good weekend. Good luck to all of those with finals. Glad I'm done with those. ^_^

I've been watching Delightful Girl Choon Hyang (finally watching it after downloading it years ago haha), and while I like the 2nd guy (of course, so tortured) and Han Chae Young is so cute, just not feeling Jae Hee. He overacts allllll the time. And when he cries, I can't help but see the crazy red eyes and think someone just rubbed some onions or peppers in his eyes right before the director called action.

I'm going to finish it but skipping a lot of parts. Just wish the story wasn't so flip floppy, oh they're fighting, oh they're breaking up, oh they're trying to work it out, but then some crazy stuff happens. I hoped they'd break up right after high school, he'd earn her love during a time jump, then they'd meet up again when they're older. Oh well.

I have been looking forward to this thread all week.

Here is another NY Times + S. Korea story - Sort of.

65 countries took standardized tests for Math, Science and Reading. The US battled for 23 and worst place in them, and Shanghai basically blew everyone else out of the water.
Meanwhile, S. Korea quietly came in 5th (Science) 2nd (Reading) and 4th (Math).

Here is the graphic:
http://www.nytimes.com/imagepages/2010/12/07/education/07education_graph.html?ref=education

It is a good thing Bak Seung-jo took the tests instead of Oh Ha-ni!

India doesn't have a comparable education system YET. They're getting there, and as soon as they pass a few more educational reform laws they will be joining in on the testing fun.

I would like to point out, in defense of the United States, that we test EVERYONE. That doesn't include just people like Oh Hani, it includes that kid who has nothing but a brain stem, the kid who doesn't know how to spell his name, and the kid who has been in juvenile lock up for the past six months. Also, our public education is mandatory until age 16, so we can't kick out students or even encourage them to drop out until that time. This brings down our scores dramatically. Also, we're the only country that does this, so I think our scores are great!

Also, how come China gets three scores? Why doesn't Russia? It's bigger. And if we scored the South, the North, and the West, I'm pretty sure that the United States would get drastically different scores also, because its scores from the South that brings down the United States average. (I'm a Rebel, so I can say that.)

Anyhow, this is just why I don't read any international comparisons between schools. The United States still has 26 of the top 30 universities in the world, and I think that should say something significant.

Required fields are marked *

I suspect that Canada's educational system works comparably, but they are substantially higher in the rankings than the US. Please feel free to correct me Canadians, if your testing weeds out the less than perfect. Having 10 provinces rather than 50 states may help, but maybe they just do it better.

I'm not denying that there are serious problems in the American education system, but Canada doesn't quite have the handicaps that we have especially in the South. Part of the teacher training programs down here send us to other places in the United States to observe how much better everyone is than we are... but there is literally no place comparable to the American South when it comes to education. I've been to the poorest places in the United States (American Indian reservations) and they still don't have the problems down here. Canada has a smaller, more similar population (and if you even try to point out that they have 2 languages I'm going to laugh in your face) with a much higher standard of living. I've taught kids from Canada and they're a lot better off than here.

Just to give you a small idea of what we're dealing with (that no one else in the world deals with) I taught at a school with a student population representing over 200 countries (first generation), 126 different languages including two that we could not identify, 45 severely mentally retarded students, 8 different gangs and members of the KKK and the Black Panthers, and with 93% of the population under the poverty line. We were proud when some of those kids could use the Phonetic alphabet to write their name on the test paper. We could never find enough translators. On top of that, during one school year, we went on lock-down 8 times, had 4 bomb threats, had 1 drive by shooting (at the school), and twice had to chase out bums (and one time a goat) who had wandered into the school building. The big goal of the school that year was to raise enough money to put in windows. (Nice story out of that: the American goalie for the US Soccer team bought the entire soccer team shoes, which for some of my students were the very first pair of new shoes they had ever owned.) If Canada has to deal with that, then I will be impressed with their test scores.

When the military comes to recruit at our school, they target the teachers, not the students. True fact.

Or perhaps the problem is that India doesn't have comparable public schools. It's odd that India would be left out due to the absence of certain educational reforms, because academically they would probably rank pretty high.

The United States does test everyone, BUT the US also allows calculators in classrooms as compared to countries like India where calculators are banned in schools and exams. They even use log books to look up higher numbers, and memorize most functions.

The United States' tests also require more logical thinking and less memorization than any other tests that other countries are using. We test dramatically different. There is a lot of inference required to take a test in the United States, our students are expected to predict and evaluate and compare at much earlier ages than in other countries. Plus, when you take into account that English is variable and is constantly evolving, not many of our students even speak the language that our tests are given in. Can you truly complain about the use of a calculator in this instance?

I will have to politely disagree. After being a Calculus TA for three years in a respectable Ivy League, I doubt their basics are strong enough. A majority of my American students struggled with Math, while their Indian counterparts kicked ass. Also, since the average Indian student starts calculus and organic chemistry around 8th grade aka 13 years of age, I doubt there is a whole lot of memorization involved.
Also, not all memorization is bad. If you have the stuff at your fingertips, it makes life that much easier. It also allows you to make a more informed decision, because you already know all the options. When American students master basic algebra I will rest my case. Until then I prefer the ones that come over from Asia.
India and China also have multi-lingual students. With English constantly evolving and most people speaking multiple dialects not to mention languages, I doubt that's an actual defense.
I was in India for my last two years of high school. And with basic things like floods, lack of electricity, bomb scares, communal riots, my graduating class had a 90% average in Maths, Physics, and Chemistry. So that would never be a valid comparison.
Colleges in the United States are far superior due to the sheer amount of resources they have, but basic schooling, my bets are with Asia.

Educational reform laws would require them to have comparable public schools, which is why I added that little tidbit of information.

The whole the North v. the South rings very true. Even within states themselves. I'm from northern Virginia, where in high school we are forced to take these ridiculously easy state exams. The reason, they aren't challenging for us is because these tests are made easy for the schools in the south, whose school systems do not compare to those of northern Virginia (which rank top in the nation.) And I guess this has a lot to do with the fact that most people in northern Virginia work for the government and are rather affluent, compared to people who come from tiny farming towns in the south.

as of this posting, Yoochun (Sungkyunkwan) is leading, followed by KHJ in the "best use of an idol star" category. on the other hand, KHJ leads the "worst use of an idol star" category.

if you would look at it from a marketing perspective, then KHJ has indeed been very useful for PK. but for his acting career... PK wasn't so useful for KHJ.

Happy friday OTer...

I want to thank JB for keep recapping Tamra, The Island. Oh well I have to thank nattacha too :) . If you didn't, I wouldn't think it is underrated drama, cause it is. I love Park Kyu (oh what a name, ha, ha), he beats Sun joon for more garang than garang. Im joo hwan should have got the award instead of Seo woo from this drama :( ( I want to watch What's up now) Seo woo, emm she just cries ALOT, and that's it. I didn't get where the storyline wants to go in 1st few episodes, but after that it uphill climb. Lee Sun Ho plays Ian is cute (why has he not been casted as lead or 2nd lead role yet? ha, ha shallow me). And I wish I can learn Korean as fast as William. boo...

And to everyone who face the final exam soon, Fighting!!

Please don't say you hate your under graduated time for its exam, classes, and papers, for you probably gonna miss it when you have graduated already. but at the time you just don't have enough money/support and time to continue your study. and studying in class becomes such a bless.

So fighting!! enjoy your study. Dramas are waiting for you just around the corner after you exam finish. They won't go any where I promise you :)

except for class today and a small paper due monday, my semester is practically over! TV has seriously saved me from going crazy this entire semester. I can't wait to go home today, write my paper, and then do things like read a book for fun, clean up my room, unpack my winter clothes so I can stop wearing the same 4-5 tops and same 2 pairs of pants week after week, and backup my computer.

I can't wait for Secret Garden tomorrow. The switch was getting on the flat side and I'm glad they're back to their own bodies. Bring on the tension!

Happy Friday Everyone!

I can relax now. For the most part. I still have a 3-5pg paper to write on a social movement for one of my classes as well as a cover letter to a professor for my portfolio (that I already handed in, but she gave me an extension on the cover letter because she didn't get my last essay back to me until today...which went directly into my portfolio and back into her hands). So I just have to email that cover letter to her by Monday.

While I wish I was all done with this, I'm glad that I don't have as much to do right now. This is nothing, what I had a week ago was way too damn much, especially since I realized one of my papers was supposed to 7-9pgs, not 6-8pgs and I had already exhausted my topic by the middle of page 6. Lot of BS-ing there.

Moving home tonight for the winter break (one month of relaxing at home, sleeping in my own bed, and playing with my dogs...and lets not forget dramas!)

Gotta get through Christmas shopping though. And decorating the tree. And my mom's bday dinner (a week after her birthday...). And those two damn papers. Phew.

Hope no one else has this much to do. =D

I know! I can't wait to see what they do. Especially now that they've expectantly changed back!

I have to avoid the site for a while starting tomorrow cause I'll get too tempted to read the recaps, and I want to wait for the subs!!!

I'm treating Secret Garden differently than MSOAN, which I'll read the recaps for while watching w/o subs... not because I can't wait for them, but because I don't really care enough to wait. Unlike with SKKS where I was watching unsubbed and reading every recap available cause it was like crack and I couldn't get enough. I guess because I'm enjoying being surprised by Secret Garden, I want to wait for the subs so I can enjoy it fully.

I miss My girlfriend is a gumiho where the subs were up like lightning!! I was spoiled when they came up that night!! (I'm in Chicago, so there's a 15hr time difference, but they were still up less than a day after they aired in Korea)

that's unexpectedly changed back ... fail.

gf said she didn't like it that they changed back so fast. I'm kinda diggin it though. It's like in you're beautiful when Tae Kyung found that Mi nyu was a girl in like the second episode... so different than what I thought was gonna go down.

For this I was expecting the normal story arch of switch bodies, face challenges, grow, learn a lesson, realize the other person's worth, cry, change back. It's a tough job for the writer not following that, but there is a lot of potential so I'm excited to see what she does.

Required fields are marked *

I totally agree with you! I'm in Texas so I think the time zone change is the same?

I am also going to try and avoid the recap until the subs come out, but that is so hard to do!!! I tried avoiding them on episodes 7 and 8, but that was a complete failure.

I am also trying to avoid the spoilers now! Before I was trying to find every spoiler possible, but now I just want to be surprised. Avoiding spoilers is so hard with SG.

I am so excited that they are back in their bodies now, I can't wait to find out what happens next :)

yea I'm pretty sure they are the same time zone.

I know!! Avoiding spoilers is soo hard for SG! I avoided that spoiler post last week, but then the screen cap of the episode with the Oska kiss totally spoiled me! lol I was also spoiled for the episode when they switched at the end ... the screen cap of hyun bin's face/reaction, when I saw it I was like, so I guess I know what happens at some point in this episode!

It's so hard to avoid this site though!!!

Almost done with finals! Thank god, because if I have to hear one more time that I'm expected to get a 3.9 GPA this semester, I will gladly knock said relative out and hide them in the trash can until it's garbage day.

On the other hand, I started watching more dramas from the early 2000s and every drama had someone that was sick. No really, every. single. one. I think I need to go back to more current dramas, at least then it's HD, so the actors look so much hotter *cough Hyun Bin cough*

Lost in translation...

I love the secret garden songs "That woman" and "That man," so I asked my hubby to help me translate (aka make sense of) them. I laughed out loud when I read this part:

얼마나 얼마나 더 너를 이렇게 바라만 보며 혼자
이 바람같은 사랑 이 거지같은 사랑
How much longer should I look at you alone and continue this god dxxm fxxking crazy love (literally a love like wind and beggar).

It was so funny because other translations just put "love that came like the wind...a beggar like love..."

But he said 이 거지같은 [insert whatever word here]...... is used when you absolutely can't stand/detest/hate something. Like when something makes you really miserable. He said it much better when he explained it to me later, but that is the gist of it.

Anyway, that little bit made me appreciate/understand the song even more.

I love, love, love Secret Garden. It made me LOL, for realsies, several times during ep 7 and 8. Oska both times - yelling after Tae-Sun (who is, let me go off on a tangent for a bit, totally hot and has such great chemistry with Oska, IMHO, to the point where I wish they would just get it on! Okay, tangent over...) about not being an actor because even his FANS hate his acting (HAHAHA!) and then Oska getting out of the pool at the sauna and FLEXING in front of shocked Ra-Im in Joo Won's body - priceless.

(I think I used up my caps allowance on this comment, lol).

This show is too good and I can barely wait for eps. I am a sucker for romance and comedy, in that order. :D

Happy Friday, everybody!

I'm looking forward to how Mary will turn out with that new writer next week. Still a tad bitter about that writer change halfway through the game. I'm afraid we're heading towards major angsty, familiar plot cliche territory.

Last week I posted up a song cover "Just a Dream" by Sam Tsui & Christina Grimmie. Which, is soooo good. So pretty! And yes, I'm still obsessing over this song... 3 weeks later. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2RA0vsZXf8

This week, here's Alex Goot, one of my newly discovered YouTube singers that's turning out to be one of my favorites. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iRkaJEwEKaA

Just something to listen to if you need some new music in your life! If any of you are still in school, good luck with studying for finals! I have my last final today and I can't wait to start my winter break. Have a great day, everybody!

Anyway, totally not looking forward to the angsty ep 10. I get the feeling it is going to be MR back to JI and MG kindaaaa back with SJ and then right at the end MG and MR will get back together. Which is crap because there will be no more hot kisses between MG and MR (and knowing K drama, they will probably give us a stupid little hug right at the end. I hope I am wrong. =/

So I've been putting off seeing Playful Kiss because I've seen the Taiwanese version and that one was torturous, but worth it because of the chemistry of the leads...

also, i saw a youtube video that compared the crucial 'rain kiss' scene and oh gosh, I felt that the rain/umbrella kiss in PK was just, so, so, so, flat. I normally HATE Taiwanese dramas, but ISWAK had me so hooked. It had a ridiculous as hell plot, and so torturous (because it was 30 eps long) but something about it kept me going--- i even hated the character of the main girl because HOW DUMB CAN YOU GET, but at the same time, it made me admire Ariel Lin for going all out. And their rain kiss, that one was a classic scene.

So would anyone highly recommend PK?

As of to this day, i've watched a total of 112 Kdramas since late 2007 . All documented on my speadsheet(with all my ratings and stuff)
52- Drama Series- 2007(4); 2008 (14); 2009 (18); 2010(16)
60 -Movies ( 2007(4);2008 (18) ; 2009 (24); 2010 (14)

I choose quality dramas. Based on my research : cinematography, locations, actor-wise, writers, plot, depth and directions.
Worth my sleepless nights. (I wonder, If i had worked that for my overtime hours, it'll accumulate a lot! :). and uncle Sam will be happy :)

As for PK ,I am sorry. But it's not on MY list. Kim Hyun Joong is cute and have that appeal though.
And kinda doing good as a rookie actor.

I must be the only person who really doesn't get the appeal with Kim Hyun Joong. I'll readily admit I like some of SS501's songs, but that's the group. Kim Hyun Joong on his own, not so much. There's something I forgot to read in the manual about the universe in regards to him.

Girl, don't worry if you don't like something that everyone else seems to like. That means you're an individual, and it also means that there's just that much KHJ that his fans don't have to share. They should be grateful that you don't dig him, and keep you around in case the fight for him comes down to you and them.

I kind of don't care for his acting in Boys over Flowers since he's not the lead, but since he's the lead in PK I'm kind of inclined not to watch it because he's the lead and I'm afraid he's terrible. Plus I know how ridiculous the story is.

I don't know about HIGHLY recommend. But I thoroughly detested Itazura na Kiss. I wanted to wring Kotoko's annoying neck. OTOH, Playful Kiss' Ha Ni was adorable somehow. They pulled it off without being annoying. It's sweet and fuzzy. If you are in the mood for sweet and fuzzy, go for it.

I'm up to 21 k-dramas this year (I've had a heck of a year with ALOT of late late nights - my family marathoned 3 in one week a while back) and PK is middling in my line up. But on the high side of middle. There are a few shows that will get me into full on rant mode, and Playful Kiss is not one of them.

PK is a lot more bearable than ISWAK. i find it surprisingly enjoyable despite my hatred for its taiwanese and japanese counterparts.

KHJ wasn't as cringe-worthy as he was in BOF, plus he's very pretty to look at, and JSM is ridiculously adorable, so yeh, give it a try, you never know, it might be your cup-of-tea.

My top three for 2011:

The Duo - if Chun Jung Myung is confirmed, and if his alterna-switch buddy is played by another early 30s actor with the chops to pull it off.

Faith - Kang Ji Hwan? Back in a sageuk? You have to drag me away from the screen.

What's Up? - Im Joo Hwan? Singing and dancing? With Im Joo Eun? Again, drag me away.

Additional interesting dramas:

Midas - would definitely be in the top three if the lead wasn't Kim Min Jung. She really doesn't do it for me, but anything with Jang Hyuk I would watch.

Poseidon - Leader with Kim Ok Bin? Sold!

City Hunter - Lee Min Ho as Ryo Saeba? I'm tuning in for the O_O Gotta see it to believe it factor.

First, stick your head out the window and tell them to shut up. If that is not effective, or if you believe that it will cause bullets to be sprayed in your general direction, I suggest purchasing a projector. Show KDramas on the side of your house/apartmeny building until your neighbors are distracted with the wonderment, and too busy watching to make noise. If that is still not an effective deterrent, gimme your address and I'll come over and take care of the problem permanently.

If they're really bad, write them a message in Coca-Cola on their car. After their paint dissolves, leave a post-it note threatening to break their sealant if the noise continues. Do this about 6 am, and make sure you have a look-out.

0

Okay, but really don't do that. You can get charged with destruction of private property.

Call the cops. Tell them it's a nightly thing, and they need to patrol the area.

0

See what I mean about learning the most interesting stuff? I am making a mental note to myself that coca-cola dissolves car paint.!

0

thanks! I'mma call the cops the next time they do that racket. Poor car - sounds like it took all the beating. And I heard all the slamming - from across the street, in my bedroom, with all the windows closed.

0

"See what I mean about learning the most interesting stuff? I am making a mental note to myself that coca-cola dissolves car paint.!"

yeah! I only knew about the scratch-the-finish-with-a-bottlecap-as-you-pass-by thing. never heard about Coca-Cola's effects on paint.

*makes a mental note not to put Coke can on car hood. or drink Coca-Cola again.* :(

0

Oh, you can drink Coke. The acids in your stomach counter the acids in the soda, so its okay. On the other hand, if you have a hernia or an ulcer, Coke is like drinking a can of glass.

0

hyperacidity history+high work stress+inadequate sleep... yup! quitting Coke! :D

0

Also, if you leave a puddle of Coke on your car hood for an entire summer, it will dissolve you car hood, go through to your engine block, dissolve a nice little hole there, and then go through until the ground absorbs it and neutralizes it. I suggest trying this on a junkyard car and not your own, in case you're interested in experimentin'.

0

on the plus side, it (Coke) works as a pretty good laundry additive for dissolving grease - learned that from a friend who worked rebar.

*Question*

Why it seems that two "woman" kissing on screen is more acceptable than two man?

Today is the first presentation of a "Christmas Musical" done by my local church, I am playing the guitar, the music is a "Big Band Jazz" style, the musical is a period time @50's.

This "Holidays" have become bittersweet to me, last year on December the 6, my bosses son die in a hunting accident shoot by his own uncle, Mathew was only 15 years old and as you can imagine being close to the family is not easy.

But one good thing has come about from this tragedy, Mathew was not wearing an orange vest, so his family work to introduce a bill in Oregon since it was not required by law at the time of the accident, and a couple of moths ago the law pass here in Oregon requiring anybody under 18 to wear an Orange vest at all times while hunting, a bitter sweet victory but this law may save a lot of other kids from loosing their life's.
*Happy Holidays* Stay safe!

I think that we as women could care less and are not threatened by homosexuality the same way that men are... plus men like it when two chicks kiss.

I'm glad to hear that Matthew's tragedy ended in some positive legislation. I'm sorry that the tragedy had to occur in the first place, and I'm praying for your boss to have some peace in his heart.

"Why it seems that two “woman” kissing on screen is more acceptable than two man?"

Ironically, boy kissing boy seems more common in K-pop/K-drama than girl kissing girl. Still remember when Kim Hee Chul laid a big fat one on his violinist during the SM Concert, thus causing an orgasmic reaction from the crowd. He knows his audience! :D

If you mean depict or sexuality in film or TV, it's mostly how genders relate to film grammar. When men watch a "titillation" scene, the scene becomes a kind of "threesome" where via the camera, the male watcher "participates" from the 4th wall. And usually the male partner is shot in a mostly functional manner, so that the male viewer doesn't feel "competitive." This is also mostly true when the scene is in a serious "movie movie." And of course, when there's two women doing that, there is no competitive male partner at all, and the male viewer can participate with whole proprietorship. Implicitly, G2G scenes give the male viewer a fantasy of ultimate attention and control; it's not really homosexuality but narcissistic projection. Male homosexual love scenes are a severely uncomfortable experience for many men on two levels. First, it still asks the male viewer to participate in a sexual situation that does not abide with gender. Second, it puts up a mirror where both the ecstasy and primal dynamics involved with love/sex are held up directly to the male viewer. He will recognize some aspect of himself in such a scene, and it will make him self-conscious within his anonymity.

I think you are right, there is only one movie that I have watched where I did not felt
as you put it "self-conscious" when one of the main plots deals with male homosexuality, the name of the movie is
"Our Lady of the Assassins (Spanish title: La virgen de los sicarios) from Colombia.

The reason being that even when the older male lead falls in love with a 16 year old male prostitute, the other plots that of the life of the assassins (sicarios) hired by the drug cartels was so graphic that I did not had a chance to react to the homosexual story line even when is part of the main plot!

This is a movie that I highly recommend!!!!

If you're going to mention Heenim "kissing" Henry (violinist) then I'm going to have to say he's "kissed" Siwon (@viola, yes that siwon, your siwon and several times at that,)
He's kissed Sungmin- the son in President-
he's "kissed" Han Geng (formerly of Super Junior::cries::) he's kissed Jungmo of Trax,
4 he's kissed Kyuhyun,
he's kissed Leeteuk... ::takes a breath::
He's tried to kiss Donghae(It's ok daddy's girl),
he's kissed KangIn (WGM, Romance Zero),
he's kissed Eunhyuk,
he's kissed Zhoumi and I'm pretty sure there are a few I haven't seen that he's already done..

LOL as a commentor on youtube once said, if you kiss Heechul it's almost like you're indirectly kissing all of Super Junior...hahaha ... that boy is too beautiful for his own good... I <3 him^^

has anyone else see "single princesses and blind dates"? i've only seen korean dramas so far (as far as asian series go), but last week i got into this mainland chinese drama. it's really good. it's very different from a kdrama, but it's not bad at all, and i'm on episode 24. of course, i can't speak a word of mandarin to save my life, so i've looked for the subbed versions. i can't wait until episode 25 comes out subbed!!!! there's 30 episodes total...anyways, i recommend this drama to anyone who's interested.

this is the only non-korean drama i've seen. the truth is that mainland chinese dramas are usually cheaper-looking than the typical wednesday-thursday slot kdrama (maybe its the budgets or technology or who knows), and this one has its flaws, mind you- stuff like the scenery is very unrealistic (very large, american style house in an empty lake area surrounded by similarly colorful houses, for examle) , and directing is a bit jerky at times, and at first it was annoying how the voices sound dubbed. but overall, the story is quite good, follows a logical line, and you can definitely relate to the characters. i'm rooting for all the pairings and i've laughed and felt nervous at the tense parts and enjoyed it a lot. like i mentioned, its a completely different style of drama, meaning that even though it's romance, it's simply nothing like a romance kdrama in the way it tackles the story and just everything. anyways, i'm really into it!!!!!!!!!!! can't wait for episode 25!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

it is their right to do that since they own the dramas and air the shows english subbed through their international channels - but not all (so there are less options - they may decide to share the higher-rating ones to the world audience only), and sometimes at later dates.

however, that's a downside for us, international audience who want up-to-date, eng/foreign language subbed episodes, and more title options. (what if they don't sell dramas with high quality but low ratings?) after Viki, who's next?

i think one of the TV stations' concerns here is that the international saleability of dramas tend to fall due to the decrease in viewer interest (mirrored by the ratings) in countries where many kdrama followers have already seen the dramas online. adding to the ratings decline is the proliferation of DVD copies on sale of dramas that were uploaded and subbed in the Internet.

0

Required fields are marked *

well, viki has recently changed their website around, so a lot of things are missing....
but, other than KBS2 who broadcasts KBS World across many continents and also has english subbed dramas available for download on their website as long as you are American (so yeah, they can make a profit from it, and its more cnvenient for them to sell rather than let viki do it for free), i don't understand why SBS and MBC are doing that. my initial reaction was: they are getting too cocky thinking that kdramas have many fans and they want to make more money from selling it to some networks in exclusively asia (yep, no europe or south america or frica included) than to let fans make free subs..their loss, since international fans can't buy subbed dramas in their own language on mbc or sbs websites (which are in korean, btw) anyways, nor can they really stream the dramas through the websites because they will be in korean and also because of conflicting time conversions

0
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

also, how hard can it be for a company with actual employees to produce subbed dramas when a fansite that runs on the work of volunteers (they work for free) can do it in many languages....sure, the fansite is free, but i doubt people would mind paying (unless its ridiculous like 20 dollars per episode or something) a bit for a drama subbed in their language, available at a website written in their language, and that accepts foreign credit cards safely. since neither mbc nor sbs offer this, they simply lose out on a large audience who wont be able to watch the dramas, particularly outside of oriental asia.

I was thinking much along those lines, too. And, honestly they don't even have to charge viewers to make revenue - they can release them on sites like Hulu, and get a cut of the advertising $. I noticed recently that Coffee Prince on Hulu now sports subs provided directly by MBC America, so maybe something like is in the works.

"Also, does anyone have any thoughts on KBS, SBS and MBC putting the screws on Viki and forcing Viki to stop making subbed kdramas available to the public?"

Actually Viikii make those shows public . . . if you pay.

The truth is, we're extremely spoiled. 5 years ago, it was still hard getting subs for sageuks or variety shows unless you got the American feeds. And if you got a week turnaround for subs, that was considered very fast.

At some point, it may just be more valuable to learn Korean. Or better yet, Chinese. If you know Chinese, then you can get all the Korean and Japanese (and Thai and Vietnamese and . . .) programming that you want, subtitled within hours of airing. Millions of fangirls cannot be denied!
