Okay, speaking of Jdramas, is anyone else watching "Taisetsu na Koto wa Subete Kimi ga Oshiete Kureta" (seriously a friggin mouthful).

The first episode was aired on Monday.. I think this has the potential to be really... good. I thought that Miura Haruma would look too young to play the role, but in actuality he looks the role. And I love Erika Toda! I didn't realize Erika Toda's so young, I feel like I've seen her forever...

I really like Erika Toda's character, but from the looks of it she's gonna have a tough road ahead. I'm not sure how I feel about Miura Haruma's character. And the other girl has the potential to turn into the completely psychotic, manipulative bitch (it'll be difficult for me to resist tearing her hair out).

Anyway. Just wonderin'.

I started watching it, but just didn't get into it. I stopped at the part where Hikari hands Shuji the key after class. It doesn't help that it is not subbed (English). Do you know a website where it is subbed? I might watch it if subbed.

Hmm... not sure, I can look around though. I know I watched it with Chinese subs, though, so yeah...

I don't know why they had to make the name THAT long. Like, really? Couldn't find a shorter title??

But yeah, this one seems like a heavier drama and is interesting in how it explores things like hypocrisy, etc.

I actually liked it. I feel Haruma fits his role but the chemistry between him and Erika isn't that strong. The pink songs are good but then out of place (hope they don't play the "stupid girl" song too much)

I feel like we're supposed to feel bad for Hikari with her arm scar and all, but I don't really want to. She probably is manipulative person...like.. how does Shuji not remember anything.. really dude? Really?

I am loving Dream High. I keep watching it over and over again and the OST plays in the CAR and Work. I think i have reached the heights of obsession with this drama because the biggest gloom in my life right now is that there are still 3 days till monday and episode 8 will not be playing. Unlike others, i connected with Hye-mi from the get-go. People keep saying that she was rude, cold and robotic. Hey usually Kdrama leads are like that and yet they are liked. There always was a vunerability about her. It seems that she was being mean in order to protect herself. Although she is cold and rude, there are cracks and flashes of niceness. She just doesnt want to be bothered. But she dosent seem like a person who would harm others to get what she wants. \

On the other hand Baek-hee..So you have lived a tough life..Bo hoo..That doesnt give you the right to harm others or make your methods correct. If she had been so troubled about being in hye-mi's shadow why was she always hanging out with her in the troubled life. I am sure pil-sook had a way tougher life than Baek-hee but she turned out just fine.

I am also getting playful kiss vibe from jason-pilsuk romance except that jason is a zillion times nicer and clueless. They are cute but kinda pisses me off that all her decisions are based on jason. She decides to quit and not quit all based on jason.

I feel like there is a strong connection between jin-gook and hye-mi..They are very similar human beings...Both tough and rude on the outside and are nice people inside. I think Hye-mi finds it easier to connect with jin-gook because he is similar to the way he approaches things, doesnt fuss too much and overwhelm her. He takes care of her without making her feel indebted or responsible for him...

But they are so similar that i beleive that her and sam-dong make a better couple...Because they balance out each other. He makes her smile, takes care of her and she makes him want to be better...And i just love Kim So Hyun. Is it me or there are lesser scenes with him than Taecyon.

Also, i am loving watching Flames of Desire. Shin Eun Kyung rocks her role..She is ugly, ruthless, beautiful, vunerable, driven and just raw...I think she is carrying the whole show on her shoulders..Jo min ki is super boring...Yoo Sueng ho is annoyingly naive...And Seo Woo...I thought she was a little annoying but decent in Tamra's island but i loved the show so much and this was one of her first roles so i didnt mind her so much..In Cinderella's sister she cried and cried and overacted but that show was such a mess that i didnt care...But this show..She ruins it everytime she is there..She makes me cringe and makes me want to slap her...Why does she cry so much..Isnt she supposed to be sympathetic...I probably felt more sympathy for bitchy second leads and villians than her...I just want her to dissapear...Hers role should be a lesson is how to overact, use annoying smirks and eye glares and ruin the show..Stop ruining my show..

so there are some very reputable dental clinics held by the dental schools in my area. do you guys think it is worth the really long appointments (since each appt is a teaching-learning experience, it takes 3 times longer than normal to get things done) to save money on dental treatment?

SS501 was my first K-pop band.
I always thought PJM was cute because he didn't seem confident despite his good looks.
The MV is all kinds of pretty but I feel he is buried in there. I would have like to see a more stripped down version. Less make-up and less distance between us and the performer.

He has the talent, why do they need to overproduce?

I may be an idiot or something, but why is SSH called Mr. Hand Towel?

0

I believe is because when he was in Seuls Inn he walked out of the shower with just a towel covering him
and showed us his amazing body ( now I am drooling all over as I am typing). Not sure though, but I think this is the reason.

You guys! Tell the truth, now.

Like the fabric that a hand towel is made from, SSH is an intricate weave of beauty, charisma, intelligence and skill.

His early days working the Korean Peace Corps in India brought him into the world of cotton textiles. He didn't just teach at the loom, he became the loom, and wove a hand towel of wisdom that comforted (and dried) those that listened. People from miles around came to hear him speak of the wonders of life, and how they too, could become towel like.

When returned to Korea, he ripped all the sleeves from his shirts, kept his hair blond, and acted in Summer Scent.

i just finished downloading shining inheritance and secret garden.

i dont like watching dramas until they're done so i had to stop myself watching secret garden until ep 4 eventhough i just love hyun bin and ha jiwon.

now i am downloading my princess and gonna just read the recaps for my rom-com fix.

there are a lot of "good" dramas to watch (with fingers crossed as not to jinx it)i hope the trend continues.

last year, there seemed to be a lot of good dramas at the start of the year and as the year progressed, it got worse.

Happy Friday!

I haven't posted on OT in so long...

I've been very very sick for the past few months. In December I really thought it was the end for me. I'm recovering now, although it's going to take a very long time. I would have gone crazy without kdramas. As Ra Im says in SG about Oska's music, they are my painkiller.

I'm feeling grateful today: The sun is out, I'm visiting my mom in Houston - and I haven't been able to go to my parents' house in 5 years, so it's really nice. Secret Garden just ended, and I haven't been so crazy addicted to a drama maybe ever. Still feeling the happy from that ending. And few good dramas are airing, so there's something to look forward to during the withdrawal.

I hope all of you guys have been well. So many new handles, I hardly recognize anyone! Love to all :)

So... an inch and a half of snow in Memphis = official city shut down. I had kids to entertain all day today (one of them lives way out in the boondocks, so he's staying with us until this snow melts), but thankfully daddy came to the rescue and is taking them to the comic shop, which is having an official games night for $5. I love our local comic book shop!

Now to clean up the mess that doing arts and crafts (and electronical engineering) makes all over our living room floor... soon to be followed with curling up with my laptop and staring at Who Are You? for a couple hours until the boys get home.

I'll play T.O.P and G-Dragon at top volume to keep me company while I'm cleaning, and that'll make me happy!

hello all!
I am new to Kdrama world (still haven't fully transitioned over) so I am looked for suggestions of what to watch. The olny kdramas I've seen are Coffee Prince, Goong, Boys Over Flowers, Mary Stayed out All Night, and Dream High and the movie Baby and Me.

The Jdramas that I really liked were: Hana Yori Dango, The Quiz Show 2, Hana Kimi, Zettai Kareshi, Rookies, Bloody Monday, Gokusen, Hitotsu yane no Shita, Brother Beat, My girl, Samurai High School, Orthos no Inu, One Pound Gospel, Pride.

So any suggestions along those lines would be fine. ^_^

Thank you!

Ah, you're a happy-ending kind of person, then, which is great.

These all can be found on youtube with subtitles, and I've listed the country behind the title, but from your list, I'd say you would most likely enjoy these dramas/movies:

Love Undercover (Chinese rom-com w/ Daniel Wu)
City Hall (Korean drama w/ Kim Sun Ah + Cha Seung Won)
My Name is Kim Sam Soon (K-drama w/ Kim Sun Ah)
IRIS (spy k-drama w/ Lee Byung Hun)
My Girl (k-drama w/ Lee Don Wook)
You're Beautiful (k-drama w/ Jang Geun Suk)
Tamra the Island (k-drama also called Tempted Again)
My Girlfriend is a Gumiho (k-drama w/ Lee Seung Gi)
Perfect Couple (Korean rom-com w/ Lee Don Wook)
Delightful Girl Choon-Hyang (k-drama w/ Jae Hee)
Fated to Love You (Taiwanese drama w/ Ethan Ruan)
Why Why Love (Taiwanese drama w/ Mike He)

and so many more, really ...

Since it seems you like fluffy happy dramas you will enjoy these two.

I really liked Goong, and My Girlfriend is a Gumiho (Hoi Hoi is too adorable) in the sense that they hold a special place in my heart.

Other than that, I've seen Prosecutor Princess (it was actually better than I thought it would be) , You're Beautiful (pretty much Hong Sisters= genius), Fated to Love You, ISWAK/Playful Kiss (actually it got really annoying, but you may like it) Boys Over Flowers, Full House, Oh My Lady (watch it for Siwon/child interactions, not the romance), 18 vs. 29 and a bunch of others. Right now My Princess (love! KTH!) is taking over my life, probably because it reminds me a lot of Goong which was pretty much my first kdrama ever.

Since you seem like a Jdrama fan, I liked Liar Game quite a bit, and I've watched both seasons and the movie; after seeing it all, I think I like the first season the best. Since you've watched Bloody Monday, I think you'd like it too. I also saw Absolute Boyfriend, Mei-chan no Shitsuji, and Yamato Nageshiko Shinchi Henge (is that spelled right?--My first jdrama, liked the manga)

I found K drama by accident when I downloaded Coffee Prince thinking it was in Japanese only to discover it was in Korean! LOL!

I liked Zettai Kareshi but lost interest in Mei-chan, Yamato Nageshiko, and Atashinchi no Danshi after about ep 7.

I think one of the best written dramas I've seen though is Brother Beat. If you haven't seen it I would highly suggest it ^_^

Why Did You Come To My House (Korean drama)
Three Leaf Clover ( Korean drama)
Will It Snow For Christmas (Korean Drama)
Temptation Of An Angel (Korean Drama)
Cinderella Man (Korean Drama)

Since you already got a list of happy dramas, I though I would list some Melodramas too.

The ones below are good too. They kind of flew under the radar, but I really liked them

Birth Of A Rich Man (Korean Drama)
My Country Calls (Call of The Country) (Korean Drama)
Take Care Of The Young Lady ( Lady Castle)(Korean Drama)
Smile You (Smile Honey) ( Korean Drama)

Mysoju.com and Dramafever.com will have little synopsis for you to read, if you can't find any recaps for them on Dramabeans. For most dramas I would recommend to watch till the 3rd episode before you decide to drop it. Usually the first 2 episodes set up the story and the ball does not usually get rolling until around 3 or 4 :D Good Luck and welcome to the word of Addicts :D (No we do not have OCD that makes us watch Korean Dramas and KPop everyday.... no..no..no.. well... at least that is what we tell the world....but we freely admit it to all our DB family here) :D

I also love family dramas. And comedies. Any serious show has to have a really really good story or I can't get into it so I don't know about the melodramas...

I don't mind the sad ones but I tend to put them off more for example it took me 2 weeks to watch the movie Koizora which is all of 2 hours because I knew it would end sad (not to mention Taiyo to Umi no Kyoshitsu which took me a year and a half ^_^)

Thanks!

You now have lots of lists with overlaps to start with, at any rate, and I'm sorry if I presumed from your watch list that you liked happy endings, but it is one of the things I look for before making recommendations. :)

Let us know what you pick out and what you think!

0

I've seen Koizora too! It was sad, and a tad unrealistic, but the main actor made me start watching Bloody Monday, which is sooo much better.

0

@leonardswench No no! You're right on. I don't really like sad ones but if the story is REALLY REALLY good or the plot makes it so the ending just has to go toward that way then that's ok. That's why I still like Zettai Kareshi even though there was a sad ending. But thank you! I will be sure to let you know what I have tried and like ^_^

I just finished Playful Kiss which I enjoyed. (Probably because I've already seen Itazura no Kiss and liked it) I think this drama works more as a Japanese story than a Korean one. Not that I know much about Korean culture, but from what I've seen, the Japanese don't show their feels as much as Koreans do. Which is why the character of Seung Jo in Japan would work more than in Korean. (again this is a way over simplification of culture simply based on what I've seen so far)

@FlyingAngela. That's why I watched Bloody Monday too! I love Miura Haruma! But that's what you get from a cell phone novel turned drama. ^_^ Akai Ito (which I like) is also way unrealistic.

0

this has been the best week ever!

Min-sung -- Awwwwwww! Don't do it man! *sniffle*
We had at least three different parodies including Jejoongwon (scene with the oriental therapist).
The Bad Guy nods just keep on coming.
The ones I was referencing to before was Min-young and her lighter, it seemed random in the earlier episodes but then in a later episode when she disappeared and her black phone lay abandoned on the field as a concerned Eun-joo kept ringing from her white phone and then the black phone's battery died.
And now JPY-Clone has a wallchart like BG. How hilarious was the part when he looks between MY and the dead guy and is like -- what's the connection? And then we see the post-it note; ''OTP''. Too funny.

Do you find yourself parched whilst skiing down slopes with your idol friends? CASS BEER (shakes can, sprays it everywhere) Yeaaaaaahhh! Let's get drunk! I've never snowboarded before, but it's about to get 200% more EXTREEEEMEEE!

0

I snorted my drink out at the maths. How could I forget that part -- OMG! Poor MS, that's mathematical suicide.
If your body-switching premonition is right, then I'll watch not one but TWO episodes of MAX-TIME!

Dude that was one crazy-ass trailer! Incomprehensible. I mean, Mr Gang-mo Ree, plunging from his highest tower of Seoul, trying to grab for the Sandglass? Glad they followed it up with a revised version.

0

I wanna see this Giant trailer that I've heard so much about but SBS pulled it off of youtube and I don't know where to look for it on the SBS site. Does anyone have a link to it?

In case you haven't seen the 4 or 5 links Cece posted here this is to get you PUMPED up for Paradiiiissseee aka MAX Time (bc I still prefer that title damnit) :

Y'know, it's been a while since I've watched a Taiwanese idol drama, I think Easy Fortune was my last one and MAXTIME reminds me of one, especially with its soft, sepia-toned palette and overall cheesy goodness.

hello. I was up at 6 in the morning and was typing a reply via my mobile phone when it froze on me so typing it all again this afternoon... but nobody really needed to know that, just ranting.

Anyway, it's been awhile since I've posted in here. I must admit I've steered clear ever since there were vicious posts about MSOAN - but then again, just like any relationship, there'll be disagreements and we'll just have to move past it. Im just happy that everybody here likes SG so I'm safe :-) I watched Worlds Within when SG ended - and it wasnt so bad. I liked the genuine interaction among the characters and no wonder the SHK and Binnie fell in love - there was so much skinship that you'd have to be a rock not to feel something! On that note, does anybody know the real score? Are they still together or is HJW on his radar now?

HB recently confirmed he is currently in a relationship when he was in a show call "Taxi", I am pretty sure he was talking about SHK.
I understand what you mean by staying away from Dramabeans when thing get heated. I remember saying " that's it I am not comming back here!" when the infamous "SG bed-scene" on episode 13 was discussed, but my love for this site is bigger than any tiny disagreement we could have, even if in the future me and this site will have any type of arguments I know I would come back again.

Anyone watching "Sign" 싸인 (SBS)??

It started with gimmicky style with cliche characters, and even first couple of episodes couldn't quite settle down its direction, but with eps 5-6, I feel it's settled down its foot as pure entertaining, plot-driven drama.

It's not trying to be a White Tower 2, but rather, it just seems to be following a pattern that works well with typical american crime-procedural drama series. While each episodes 'tries' to leave cliffhanger endings, it's very predictable.

Unbalanced acting, predictable characters, hollywood-wannabe directions... but I'm watching it anyway.. because it's entertaining~

I'm watching and enjoying it. I do not kow the other drama you mentioned but Sign has captured my attention each week so I keep coming back for more.

It is good to see that they have finally settled in because it was chaotic early on....agreed about that one and this is not CSI but I do enjoy seeing what is described like how it is done in either CSI or Criminal Minds....

I recently watched "Salt" and "Inception".

Angelina needs to eat because suspending my mind to think a 110 lb woman could whup so many beefy men was pushing it and I wonder if she will reappear. Love her.

Inception was surpsingly unnerving to me for some reason [perhaps the bending of reality in one's dream state and ohhh, the levels had me blown away]....I love love Ocean's and Bourne, but move over boyz because there are some new kids on the block; and I hope to see them again in 2012.

I watched it with no subs and limited Korean. I, in my hopes of hopes, wanted the Dating Agency guy to end up with LMJ but after letting some time pass since watching the movie, I realized that there are reasons behind break ups and the DAguy realized this and while he still might have had feelings for LMJ, he realized that (I think that he realized) while he still had feelings for her, they are apart NOW and that he only wishes for her to be happy.

What a terrible run-on sentence.

I think I preferred the Steve Martin Cyrano version better as the Korean Gangster parts were a bit farfetched.

I am quite disappointed about the movie. Maybe it is over-hyped. The acting of everyone, including UTW, is just so-so. Daniel Choi is relatively the better one. It is another case of the trailer better than the movie!

Required fields are marked *

I agree in being disappointed. I think it's the mentality of "go big or go home". It seemed like only a large amount of extras were done in the church scene. So why couldn't this story be done as a made for TV movie or drama special? It was lacking a spark or anything really memorable. It's also hard to connect two characters love connection when UTWs character seemed like such a jackass. I didn't feel like LMJs character was so nice or awesome either, Daniel Chois character should have gotten a nicer girl... (I sound like his mom now)

srsly, did you get to the end of the movie yet? Didja? Or are you still stopped midway? Because I have some disappointing news of disappointment for you.

0

Disappointed news of disappointment? Oh noes! Did cello guy get cancer from standing out in the rain that night? Did his fake-sallow face become really-sallow? Was he allergic to dahlias?
I'm still stuck midway but will report back. Hai.

0

(grabs a bag of popcorn and waits)

0

A dahlia-induced cancer would've been a more fitting wrap-up for that arc. Aaaaaargh!!
*bad flail*
That. Was a pointless film. UTW's never been one to leave a good impression on me but I absolutely hateraded on his Cyrano character.
LMJ I didn't hate or like, like many I just wish she'd been a little more fleshed out. Ditto with PSH.
-- but Daniel Choi. <3

0

The story is just so so. I expected the fluffy rom-com movie, but it was not, sorta lack of depth. it is the kind of movie that you wish you just watch it at home on your cozy sofa, eat snack, while you have nothing to do on your weekend, instead watching it at theater. Yeah, this movie is over-rated.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I actually loved it. I was expecting pure fluff, but it had a dash of the introspective. Only wish the movie was longer so we could flesh out the characters.

Compared to all the rom-com movies ever made, i'd put it somewhere in the middle with one toe on the positive side. But compared with all the rom-com movies made in the US (bromantic comedies like I Love You Man don't count) and South Korea these past few years, i'd give it an A.

In watching the first few 3 episodes of Dream High, I sympathize with Beck Hee. She has no confidence in herself so she latches onto Hye-Mi because Hyemi's popularity and coolness are traits that Becks wants for herself. And so she latches onto Hye-Mi believing that they have a mutual friendship when that is not the case at all.

So when Hye-Mi reveals her true failings as a friend and as a person during the auditions, it rocks Beck Hee to her core as the view of the person she once idolized comes crushing down. This moment also helps to transform Becks from a nice, naive person (from the brief interactions we saw with her and Hye-Mi) into a cold, competitive fierce woman.

I saw her starting to soften up again when she heard of Hye-Mi's troubles. I believe that she even wanted to sympathize with Hye-Mi and her outburst was just out of her lingering feelings of affection towards Hye-Mi and not a malicious attempt to expose Hye-mi's sufferings to the rest of the school as Hye-Mi perceived it to be. However, Hye-Mi's hurt pride caused her to lash out at Beck and as a result, causing Beck to resent Hye-Mi and be more cold as person.

This leads her to cheat with the dance solo competition, etc.

Cliffs: I hope that Beck continues to struggle with her character and that she isn't made into the villain on this drama.

Young Jedi Knight xObiO7 Greetings from YODA.

Your message I have received. Delivered to me by grey Avonlea pigeon it was.

Great suffering you have endured. Killer floods you have survived. Ten long summers in scorching deserts of Egypt you have endured.

Difficult times we live in, my brave knight. But fight on we must. Crossed over to the Dark Side our new enemes have. Snakeheads and fish forms they take. Painted Giaseng faces they draw near. Mighty Kraken Fish Face in palace she is. Poison princess with toxic fish scales I fear.

But fear not! Brave Jedi Knight ObiGrandpa Kenobi protect princess he will! The Force I sense is strong with that one!

May the Force be with You.

0

The force is strong with Grandpa...you mean fart force? The elderly tend to have very strong fart force.

0

Like you I do not Darth Blubell. Crossed over to the Dark Side you have. Save you I will not.

0

Greetings Grand Master Yoda,

I could not help but laugh. You make it seem like I've suffered tragedies of biblical proportions Grand Master.^^ But you see the truth is, my father is Egyptian... so I visit Egypt every summer... kkkk~~~~XD Nevertheless, I am glad my message was relayed well.

I am relieved ObiGrandpa Kenobi will guard the princess against kraken fishface and evil speedo alike. I shall go and lead the front against those atrocious gisaeng.

Master, please be weary of any speedo, papyrus tighties, and sparkly boxers which might want to lure you into the dark side. I hope you will be well.

May the Force be with You Grand Master.

first of... I AM FALLING INLOVE WITH DREAM HIGH! *fan girl squeal to the maximum* omona! i love the direction of the plot... i like the comparison that samdong and jinguk raised between their relationship with hyemi... that with samdong... hyemi is all smiles but with jinguk... its all cries... well we do know that crying outweighs smiling since in crying the persons involved are emotionally attached... they are open with each other which is already being seen between jinguk and hyemi... especially now that hyemi is learning to be more expressive (aka her outpour through singing to jinguk) and observant/caring other than herself (aka realizing and seeing first hand jinguk and his screwed up family life) so to conclude my spazz on DH... i love HYEMI and JINGUK.. they are perfect for each other... hahaha!

next off... MY PRINCESS... can you be anymore adorable? gosh. i love the fact that haeyoung is kinda irritated at 'kyosunim' hahaha.... i can imagine the guy MUCH more irritated once he finally falls for the princess... hahaha... Why can’t Grandpa be the lead in My Princess?

- It's bad for his health.

Why must he be relegated to Bad-Guy-Grandpa-in-wheelchair?

- Because at this point, they've ran out (and we got tired) of evil chaebol mothers. We need some variation.

Why can’t Grandpa have a romance as well?

- He already had. Unfortunately it now only exists in the family registry.

Why can’t Grandpa meet a pretty grandma and bicker, wrestle on the bed, and fall in love too?

- We will know the answer some fifty years later when we walk and live with arthritis.

Why can’t Grandpa shower in a speedo?

- Because they don't come in corduroy.

WHY CAN’T GRANDPA GET THE GIRL?????

- Because he was looking at the wrong girl. Yoon-Ju has been there for him all along. She's been forcing herself to age just to get noticed. Hae-Young is just a front. He's her way of getting to Grandpa.

Happy Saturday!!!
Peeps, can I ask something that outside K-Drama lala land? I've read an article by Amy Chua (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704111504576059713528698754.html) about her style of parenting as a chinesse american.

She got loads of backlash.. so her daughter also post an article about how she feel being raised by a tiger mother (http://www.nypost.com/p/entertainment/why_love_my_strict_chinese_mom_uUvfmLcA5eteY0u2KXt7hM/1)

I think this parenting style is alot alike korean mothers I saw in K-Drama. As a psych major, i was in awe.
I just want to know what you think about this?

Ohhh dear....I have very "asian" parents, and reading the article, I can totally relate to what happened to her kids. I was once punished for going to a sleep-over party. Whenever I do extra curricular activitties, it's definitely not supported by my parents. I couldn't join clubs at school, never played any sports for recreation, or participate in school plays mostly because my parents refuse to give me rides afterschool. Even now. I'm 17 but my parents refuse to let me drive. Everyone of my friends have their driving license but me. I don't think my parents are even allowing me to go Prom.

But not all asian children are like her kids. Extremely obedient and all. I would ask other kids' parents for rides to work as a crew member in school plays in middle school. I joined the Theatre Arts club w/o my parents knowing. I still ask for rides from my friends to go out after school. It's a pain in the butt to be asking people for a car ride (it's the thing I hate the most), but I'm not going to be bogged down. I pay for my own club fees/T-shirts/whatever.

I do think that a big part of the motivation for asian kids to do so well in school comes from their parents, but not ALL of it is. But once you know that you CAN do well, you keep up the work. I've been told that work ethics sometimes beat out brains, that's why it's important to give the most effort in school. Of course there are times when I slipped off and often get yelled at, but I'm still keeping my 4.0. Nowadays, if I don't get as good of a grade in assessments, I'd ask myself what I did wrong, but I'm not the only one. Many of my non-asian friends (my school's practically asianless) are the same as me. There are some things that come naturally, and there are somethings that need a little push and it will become a habit.

What I'm trying to say is that Asian parents ARE tough. Some are total control-freaks, but some of us kids aren't that easy either. Not all kids are like Sophia. I hid things from my parents. I know a lot of Asian kids who are not math geniuses or piano prodigies. I certainly don't agree with everything that Sophia said in her letter, neither do I think the "Asian parenting" method is superior to any other parenting methods. I think that there need to be a combination of both. If I were to have kids, I want them to know that education is extremely important, but so are being able to reach out to others, to participate in school activities, to be athletic. Sometimes it sucks major balls to have Asian parents, but in the end, I am grateful for them.

thank you for sharing... i've yet read any articles about how the children feels about having asian parents (except for sophia chua's article). most of the article were from other parents with different ethnic an parenting style. as an outsider my self (not living in the states nor having chinesse american as a parent) your story give me a wider point of view of the issue...

you're 17 and a senior right? Good luck for your theater arts club and have a great senior year :)

Pro
A) Asian Americans skew toward the top in scholastic and professional achievement.

Con
B) Asian Americans (particularly AA women) have the highest suicide rate and among the highest rates of depression in America.

The message: You have to earn your parents' love. If you watch K-dramas from that perspective, you'd understand why melodramas are so popular, and why all Asian male heroes seem to be compensating for it.

Anyone else planning on watching New Tales of the Gisaeng?
I've just watched the pilot episode and am waiting for the second to download. So far, so good. Not bowled over completely, but there were some winsome moments and some that have a typical weekend family drama feel. Im Hyuk's character surprised me, he's playing a westernised haraboji with a dog called 'Andre'!? I had hoped he'd be somewhat reprising his previous role, especially given the old-world-new-world theme (typecasting much?). But the woman playing his wife IS old-world, Halmoni is wonderful.
Im Soo-hyan and Sung Hoon seem pretty decent for rookies, there are nice little glimmers of personality but I'm still a wee bit skeptical about the show as a whole but will continue with the watch.

I'll watch the second episode on Friday after SC, ONLY as an ode to janna's brilliant mind -- ONLY IF EJ and MS switch bodies. For now, I have served my term.

Supah, Y U No be the Waldorf to my Statler?

Ok, when I read Edward I got my hopes up for a vampire horse. Mannnnnnn.

I took a shot evertime I saw a head or neck accessory..I... is your computer spinning too, or...?

Question: Does a horse bridle count?
Answer: Hell yeah it does! Horse needs to do -something. Drink up!
Question: How about ties?
Answer: Ties in a K-drama is like water in an Ocean. Just say no to generic.

So yeah.. Edward got a good pass with having to speak less english than Max. His characters name isn't Max? I don't believe you.

Hey it's Mong Ryongs appa too! What do you mean they're dads to other people now? That's.. no, that can't be right.

Dudes riding horses: Will never be ok to me.

Ok, so now I really hope they switch bodies on Saengchori so you may have to watch episode 2. I wouldn't want you to suffer too badly. Yes, could pick from say... a door number 2. But who knows what I could pick for a mystery watch...

Somewhere, in Gangnam, Mr Chames Ree is dying and wheezing of laughter at the ill fate of a fatal enemy called... Edward.
OK, so if they body switch I'll watch episode 2 of MAX-TIME, if they don't then you watch the 1st episode of a certain teen idol drama. (Bloodcurdling scream.)

You play a hard bargain. A cold icy tundra in the middle of January sort of thing. Chames Ree and Edward must of been besties in Highschool. Orange County High for.. lame kids. Yeah! Lameeee,

Oh, by dudes riding horses I made a mistake. I meant mechanical bulls. It must have been the alcohol, yes. For the record:

Guys riding horses: is normal. That's what cowboys do silly. They also wear their cowboy hats everywhere. You gotta let people know who you are and what you stand for. All the time.

Guys riding mechanical bulls: .....You know what? No one should do it. It's tacky as heck. Noooo one.

Orange County? Bwahahah!
I say why can't kids from Fox River High not dream big. Whether it's becoming singers or building better boilers... Dream Biiiig... I mean, Hiiiigh.
Alcohol? Snort, our janna only needs fruit tea to make her tipsy.

On a separate note do you ever watch Strong Heart? I usually skim through the latest clips on YT to see who guested and then download if there's anyone interesting, like Park Bom (hey, back off, I girlcrush on her and G-BOM 4lyfe!) but today, I almost died while skimming through clips, why it's the Jo Pil-yeon special! You need to d/load it!

You're right, I didn't drink at all. For shame, I've been outed!

I've seen some clips of Strong Heart but never watch it regularly. I'm waiting for the all idol special of some sort happening soon that's like the old X-man/Love Letter days. But then I'd be like "I hardly know any of these people"... oh... sooo old.

Y'know the other night for some reason I saw 2NE1 in my dream. They were shopping in a mall. I was like "play it cool, we're in America and there is no way they'd know that I knew who they are, I think" and I always thought Bom seemed to be the most scary until I watched 2NE1 TV, now I'm more afraid of CL soo.. yeah I need to go find that episode. I just paused from watching an episode of Strong Heart. Wow, gonna put my drink down..

My jaw dropped too, not so much Won Bin as Takeshi Kaneshiro, I think. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__6l-Y2NywwE/TSNItltu46I/AAAAAAAACCQ/oRctSItQjV0/s1600/Takeshi%2BKaneshiro5.jpg
I think the three alumni were fantastic. I sofa king loved my fave character's omma's French singing, her rival's Kara Dance and ''Miiiin-sungeeeeeh'' but what trumped it all? Kkiowah... kkiowah... OMG! Diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiied!

My replies are going to be all over the show, but like what's with all the dreams lately, some dreaming of the Lee siblings and now 2NE1?
I get you about CL being scary, but she's also cross-eyed so I don't know, makes her seem cool I guess. Minzy used to annoy me but I love her in the It Hurts video: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_9A1sdST1CqY/TNDq7ronSZI/AAAAAAAAAIU/cIiujxivB24/s1600/minzy.jpg
Dara is... I don't know, who's this Dara? I know but naught non-entities.
But Park Bom is kkiowah! And since I won't ever get G-Dragon, I'm happy to ship her with him. Go snag him, sistah!

Guy I'm so disappointed in how this turned out:

http://blogs.miaminewtimes.com/cultist/2011/01/piano_found_on_sandbar_in_midd.php

See there was this grand piano on a sandbar in the middle of Miami and no one knew why. Of course you know where my mind went first, and I started to pen my letter...

Dear Kwon Sang Woo,

Hi, It's Janna. We haven't talked in a while. Or, like, ever. When did you take a trip to Miami? Why didn't you call me? We could have hung out. By the way is the Carousel now replaced with the Disney teacups? I can't remember if there's a Carousel at Disneyland. Or, you know, maybe you met your love at Splash Mountain. Not everything has to be a metaphor. ell, next time call a brother up. It's cold up here and I need a vacation and I know a bunch of places to get a white suit at.

But then they said it was indie filmmakers that did it on purpose, and I was all like:

Dear Filmmakers,

Don't put a piano on a sandbar, we don't want to gentrify the Ocean. Where will the sharks go? UP IN YO BOATS, that's where. Thanks.
