Dramabeans 5-Year Anniversary Giveaway #1

javabeans: Happy New Year! Another year has zoomed by — time flies when you’re watching dramas, don’tcha know — and 2012 marks an extra-special moment for us at Dramabeans, because the site turns 5 this month.

girlfriday: Happy birthday Dramabeans! You’re finally old enough to go to kindergarten!

javabeans: Or advanced into middle age, if we’re talking cat years. And as we know, the internet = cats.

girlfriday: Well that explains where all the time from the fourth dimension went to, ‘cause I certainly don’t FEEL five.

javabeans: I can’t believe I’ve been doing this for half a decade. K-dramas have sucked away my youth! How is this site still going? To think, when I started in January 2007, my primary mode of thought was, “I wonder how many people would stumble onto this place randomly.” Because then that would be a measure of how many people were interested in dramas in the English-speaking world. As it turns out, a whole damn lot.

girlfriday: I find that most of life’s truths can be found in quotes from Field of Dreams: “If you build it, they will come.”

javabeans: Also “This is my corn. You people are guests in my corn.” And “I have just created something totally illogical.”

girlfriday: See? Maybe internet also = baseball.

javabeans: In any case, we decided The Big 5 called for some celebratin’, and how better to celebrate than to give tons of stuff away? It’s a month-long Anniversary Giveaway Extravaganza!

girlfriday: We’ll be raining down presents during the entire month of January, because if you’re part of the Dramabeans community, it’s your birthday too, and birthdays call for presents!

javabeans: You might want to mark Sundays on your calendar, because every Sunday (or Monday, if you’re ahead of us in the States) we’ll be giving away something super-duper-fantastico exciting. Wait, am I overselling this?

girlfriday: Only if you’re a grinch who hates presents. Every week we’ll be asking you a question, and all you have to do is leave a comment with your answer and email address, and you’ll be entered in that week’s drawing.

javabeans: We’ll select winners by random draw. Check back a week later, and see if you’ve won! If you haven’t, fear not, because we’ll be announcing the next round as well. More prizes!

girlfriday: And they get better each week!

My Girl was my first Korean drama and I haven't stopped watching since. My Girl was revolutionary. It had the perfect amount of humor and heart. The chemistry between the two leads is simply incredible, and they remain one of my favorite drama couples.

My first drama was Taiwanese – Mars. I loved it and it opened my eyes to a whole continent full of dramas I hadn't experienced. So I tried Japan next and Pride was airing at the time and that began my KimuTaku obsession.
My first kdrama was Full House and I liked it, but it didn't grab me like jdramas were doing. It's not until all the drama forums starting raving about Delightful Girl Chun Hyang that I finally became a kdrama convert and never looked back. If any of your friends don't understand your love of kdramas that's a great one to use to explain.

Wow, I think the first one I really watched and got hooked on was Prince's First Love/황태자의 첫사랑. I still remember waiting to go to the video store to pick out the dramas I wanted to watch, which all started with Prince's First Love. Before that, I was just into the movies since you didn't have to wait for the next part in a movie.

Ahh, dramas. I wonder how much of my life went into them...

Congratulations on Dramabeans turning 5!

I must confess that it's Boys Over Flowers, and most particularly Lee Min Ho. When I think of it, it was...a bad drama, I mean, Kim Hyung Joong was horrible, there were big lacks of action, I was so ashamed sometimes, but I loved it and was addicted, and I'm still addicted to K-dramas. It takes so much of my time, but I'm more than OK with it, and I dream of K-dramas from my parisian suburb.

1st Shop of Coffee Prince was my first drama. I stumbled on it completely by accident on hulu when I was looking for something interesting to watch. It's safe to say it completely transformed my life.

Now I'm forever hooked on kdramas and have (unsuccessfully) tried to promote my addiction on others. Guess not many Spanish-speaking folk want to give it a try in my island. Their loss!!!

You're beautiful hands down!

It was the first drama that I watched in it's entirety. The first episode hooked me. I just loved how zany it was but there was a story/ plot that kinda worked with the craziness of it.
I was brought over to the dark side not at the best time. Actually it was probably the worst time to get hooked on dramas.
Right in the middle of my Year 12 exams (it would determine if I got into university or not...)

well i can't actually remember but i think winter sonata was the first k-drama i've watched. since then i watched taiwan, jap and mainland china dramas cause our local tv networks here also show them. but ever since i've watched "my girl" i was totally taken over by the dark side then "goong", then i found dramabeans and never for a single minute regretted my time in spending watching some drama, hehe
then our local tv provider gave me KBSWORLD but usually it airs 2weeks later so i still read some recaps hehe and watch it anyways

i got hooked on kdramas in the round-about way.
i have a huge soft spot for sailor moon. someone sent me a you tube video featuring a live-action sailor moon and i went hunting and found pretty gaurdian sailor moon and watched that on a pgsm site. (50 episode marathon)
but i didn't really realize there was a world of asian drama out there.
then i found the manhwa, goong, about six months later and looking it up online i found the kdrama and watched it.
however, it was watching i'm sorry, i love you that really got me hooked on kdramas. its still on my top three list (though flowers for my life kicked it out of the first place spot some time ago).

My very first Kdrama was Autumn Tale / Autumn In My Heart. I was totally hooked onto it, but that was not my drama first love.

My drama first love was Goong! (Prince Shin! Omo!) It introduced me to Yoon Eun Hye, and I've been a fan of hers ever since. It was coz of her that I started Coffee Prince, and the rest was history. Now I'm a huge Kdrama addict keke :)

My first drama love was probably Coffee Prince. I found Personal Taste on Hulu and enjoyed the first half of the drama thoroughly but trudged through the second half just to say that I finished something. I was going through a rough time then and Personal Taste was what I needed to get my mind off of life. I said thank you to the drama and never expected to come back again.

But then I found Coffee Prince (again, on Hulu) and fell into the rabbit hole faster than you could say "Vanilla Latte". Dramas since then have been a mix of the good, the bad, and the weird, but I will always look at Coffee Prince fondly for convincing me that k-dramas could be quality stuff.

My first drama that brought me over to Kdrama land was My Girl. Lee Jun Ki, Lee Da Hae and Lee Dong Wook were the ones who convinced me that I should forget Japanese dramas and skip to the dark side. Haven't regretted it ever since. There was something appealing and different about My Girl that made me watch another Kdrama, and a new one after that, and then another and... you know how it goes:D

Oh, and Happy Anniversary Dramabeans!

Boys Over Flowers was my first! I had just had my wisdom teeth removed and had a bedridden week of time to kill, and Netflix popped up this drama as a recommendation. I'm not sure if it was the flower boy cast or the large amounts of painkillers, but either way I fell in love.

my first drama was Yi San and it was Breathtakingly awesome!!! still is my favourite drama till this day.

it was just after my exams a couple of years ago, and my brother was watching what seemed to some sort of martial arts epic. at first i started watching out of boredom, but then i got completely hooked! finished 77 episodes in about 2 weeks lol

i'm a major history buff, so besides the awesome action sequences and political intrigue, i was just amazed by the whole history of it. i'd never really thought much in depth of Asian history and for me it was so cool to see this, and realise that it was going at the same time as the Georgian period in British history lol and the vivd cinematography of the drama just brought the whole period to life, it was like having a glimpse of another world (haha kind of cheesy i know) but it was like something i'd never seen before.

not to mention the romance! whatever people say about korean drama's and not having much skinship, they certainly seem to show enough emotion without it! the main characters didn't kiss even once in this drama, and even though it was kind of bewildering for me, there was something so pure about it, that allowed you to see past all the physical side of love, that made it even more heart warming.

i gradually started watching contemporary dramas but this drama cemented the place of sageuks in my heart

I live in the Philippines and ever since I could remember I have been watching dramas. I've been exposed to the crazy (see local dramas) and the crazier. (see Mexican tele-dramas) Local soaps (this was during the late 90s up to early 2000s) were based on those Mexican dramas and would last for half a year or more and the plot gets so tied up and blurry no amount of kimchi can out-makjang-ed them.

Thankfully by the time that I was in high school, the local stations started airing asianovelas, and one them was, Endless love: Autumn of my Heart. At this moment, I won't say that Autumn of my heart was the best Korean drama I have ever seen. It was everything that made me grit my teeth and then it was not. It was depressing and annoying most of the time, but then it provided new material (during that moment)and gave me a glimpse of the wonderful world of Korean drama that was stuck beneath my skin making me itch for more and MOAR.

OR. the show introduced me to Won Bin and the wonder of Korean Men :D

my first K-Drama was definitely 'Endless Love' with young song hye gyo, song seung hun and of course won bin who well known as super hallyu star nowadays. But I'm totally hooked with K-Drama because of 18 vs 29 which starred by super young choi siwon, he hasn't even became a super junior member yet at that time, but I've already falling for him till now. That drama leads me to Kdramaland till this day :))

The first drama I ever watched was Boys Over Flowers and I absolutely adored it. I was super bored one day and thought I'd venture into k-dramaland because I love k-pop and kind of wanted to see what else Korea had to offer. I honestly don't remember how I'd heard about BOF, but it somehow just kept cropping up. I watched all the episodes within a few days (all through the night and ridiculously early in the morning too) and holy crap I was totally obssessed with it. And while I've heard people say it's not the best quality show ever (writing wise and such) I don't even care. I watch dramas because they're fun, not to analyse them meticulously.

Also, Gu Jun Pyo. <3
I mean, who could not love him?!

Holy Sageuk, Batman!! I decide to step away from the Drama Madness for awhile, and shut down the computer to catch up on my sleep deficit from watching all the end-of-year Award Shows... and then DB blows up!!

Mine is the Mother of All KDramas: Winter Sonata. Surfing around the TV one night while trying to wrestle my insomnia into submission, I came across a new cable channel: AZN. The prettiest boy (I thought at *that* time) was jumping around in the snow with the cutest girl (ditto) while this gorgeous music played in the background... and that was it. I fell like a sack-of-potatoes hard and haven't looked back since. Well worth it, too! BTW, my insomnia still hasn't subsided to this day -- but I blame the livestreaming time difference for that. Argh. :)

Regardless, ginyeomil chugha haeyo to each and everyone at Dramabeans!! May it be five x five more!! FIGHTING!!!

My first kdrama love was Autumn in My Heart. When I first saw the TV ad promoting the drama, I was wondering whether it was a Taiwanese drama, a Hong Kong drama, or a Singaporean drama (me being in Singapore at that time). The drama looked really beautiful (the cinematography) that seems to be a level above any other drama I'd seen. So I watched it and wept together with Moon Geun Young when she was separated from her first family. And I shed my tears again with Song Seung Hun and Song Hye Gyo. I was mesmerized. It helped a lot, too, that at that time I had a Korean flatmate who gave me a CD of that drama and a first introduction to the k-drama land. Ten years on ... I am still very much into K-drama, although I must say that my taste has changed and I couldn't watch as many drama as I wanted to.

But thanks to dramabeans who have fed me with constant recaps and news of kdrama and kmovies. Happy Anniversary!

The first drama that I actually ever fell in love with was 햇빛속으로 (Into the Sunlight). I'd seen other dramas like Autumn Tale beforehand but what really struck me was 햇빛속으로. I loved how the characters were introduced to each other and because the leads were so handsome. Jang Hyuk and Cha Taehyun definitely warmed the cockles of my 6th grade heart. Ha!

I don't think it had the most spectacular ending and my memory's still really fuzzy on the drama since it was so long ago. I need to watch it again. I'll probably cringe at the cliche nature of the drama...but those were the good ol' days.

My Girl did it for me.

I remember Winter Sonata was all big here in Malaysia but I didn't quite get it because they seemed to cry a lot! Jewel in the Palace and Autumn in My Heart made it to national channel too but nah, I was not that interested.
After that I did watch Kang Ji Hwan's Firework, Successful Story of A Bright Girl, and Delightful Girl Chun Hyang and yeah, I was like 'okay'.

It was in 2006. One trip to vdc rental shop and my bff and I decided to rent the first 3 vcds of My Girl. We agreed that the story line was fun and the leads look really good. We had time since it was school break.

We went home and in less than 4 hours later we were back at the shop to rent the rest of the series (there were 16 vcds!) but our hearts were broken into pieces when only 5 vcds were available and the rest were out.
The girl at the shop asked us to come back the next morning, promising us she would call the customer (who was late in returning the vcds anyway) and get the vcds for us.

The next morning, we actually waited for the shop to open! The excitement! We were so anxious to watch the rest of the vcds.
However, the vcds were still out.
Desperate, we went to a shopping complex and started searching for the vcds and after three different shopping complexes, we managed to get the DVD box set! Yay! It was quite pricey those days but argh, never mind!^^

We went home and watched the rest of the episodes at one go!

Even now, when we girls talked about our K-drama addiction, there is pre-My Girl and post-My Girl.
I started out thinking it was difficult to remember the Korean names to actually know how to read Hangul.
I even took a trip to Seoul a few months ago and plan to go again.
I think after My Girl, I am watching at least three Korean dramas simultaneously. Not all dramas are good, I could not take some dramas that I stopped at episode 3 or 4 but yeah, I love watching Korean dramas. Not only that, I went backdated with some dramas. I have, after My Girl, watch some old Korean dramas like Hotelier, All About Eve, Attic Cat, My Love Patzzi, Love Story in Harvard, Summer Scent and yeah, recently, I watched Jewel in The Palace!

It is all because of My Girl. After that drama, I even got myself its OST and made my first online transactions! Achievement! ^^

That is why if I have to choose a drama that is my first Korean drama LOVE, it would be My Girl because after that, there are many more Korean dramas for me! ^^

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY DRAMABEANS!

It was in late 2007 or early 2008 when I started to watch Asian dramas. The first drama that I ever watched in full length was 18 vs. 19 and I did it only because my friends were trying to get me into Asian dramas or something and I just said sure why not when they asked me if I wanted to watch it with them. I found that drama to be OK.

My friends really did try to bring me over to the "dark side"and told me about all sorts of dramas that I could watch. Then one weekends I was really bored and my friends had mentioned Goong a few times so I searched it on Youtube and found the first episode of youtube and I got hooked. Suddenly it was 9am in the morning and I had watched a Korean Drama the whole night. I have never looked back after that.

In search for more biseinen, I stumbled on the manga "Mars." Unable to find it in anime, my "first" drama was Mars Zhan Shen. I'd seen a couple of other live action tv shows but Mars (despite being Taiwanese, not Korean) was the first to hook me into Makjang land. While watching Taiwanese and Japanese dramas online, I kept seeing commercials or ads for a show that struck me as oddly familiar. The cast was really good looking and I just felt like I knew the plot already. One scene that kept getting to me was of a fight with a fire extinguisher. The others were vague with a little girl crying and two young men arguing. My internet searches to figure out what this show was were worded something like "fight fire extinguisher drama." After a long fruitless search, I stumbled on a Korean version of my favorite anime: Boys Over Flowers. It was hilarious because I had previously dismissed all live action versions because I just KNEW they couldn't live up to the anime. I was totally hooked after that and I just love me some K-drama now!

Mine was All About Eve with Ja Dong Gun and Chae Rim. Can't remember the year. Was it 2005? I started watching the drama in the middle of final exam week and immediately got hooked. As the result...I could not concentrate on studying for my final Statistics exam and got a D on the fina :-(. Thank goodness my Prof still gave me a C grade on that class. But it was such an awesome drama though. The first time I fell in love with Korean dramas. And it continues on until now. ^_^

The good girl you love. The bad girl you love to hate but also love. The smart, rich, handsome guy who refuses to be hood-winked by the evil girl. The sweet and pure, downtrodden but not beaten boy who loved his woman to the very end. Korean style love triangles and quadrangles started for me here!

I stumbled upon the whole Korean entertainment in 2009 and was a casual watcher. It wasn't until You're Beautiful aired that I got completely sucked in and "crossed over to the dark side" ^___^ It was the first drama that made me stick to my computer like glue for its entire run, trying to find pics, previews, bts footage to get me through another week until the next episodes aired. It was also the first time I reserved to watching a show live, without any subtitles which baffled me at first but at least it was better than having to wait half a day because I also had college classes to attend to. All in all I'm glad to have discovered such awesome dramas and it was how I found this site too ^^ Thanks DB and GF for all your hard work over the years and HAPPY ANNIVERSARY ^___^ Hope you get many many more to come your way!!

My first drama love was My Lovely Sam-Soon. I stumbled across about 3 years ago. I had made a conscious decision to not watch kdramas because I had heard that they were addictive but I gave in one particularly stressful day. I finished the series in two days and that is only because I needed to sleep because I had a test the next day. I was hooked after that, I watched Delightful Girl Choon hyang after that and then everything starring Han Chae Young (not my finest decision), and then everything starring Jo Hyun Jae.

I actually stumbled across this site when I started to watch Soulmate and fell in love, madly in love, I am pretty sure it still holds the title of my favorite drama with Sam Soon a close second. Since then I visit this site more than facebook and get all of my drama recommendations from here (I have a kdrama problem). My friends had to hold an intervention after I marathoned 6 dramas in a week.

Happy Anniversary! 5 years is a feat indeed... I am, as Bluntschli would say, "an incurable romantic". Sometimes, I feel, like my whole life is a quest to find this perfect piece of romance, that I can go back to on a stagnant day, or at a time when I am extremely frustrated with life. You watch these inane number of movies, dramas, series, soaps in the hope that you will finally find this one that you can go back to again and again... After countless years of watching I finally stumbled upon Coffee Prince and it stole my heart... If you ask me what it is about, there wouldn't be much to say...right? Cross-dresser falls in love with coffee-house owner, love happens, mistaken identity brings about heartaches, and finally the resolution. And yet, there are these moments, precious precious moments strung together, that make it so much more... Han Gyul smearing the mirror with shaving cream out of self-disgust, Han-Seoung cocooning himself in bed after a desperate search for Yoo Joo, Eun Chan trying to quiet her pounding heart before knocking on Han Gyul's door... these moments I cherish, and they make me smile. Coffee Prince is like home to me... I have watched countless dramas in the past few years, but there is this wonderful feeling of going back home after an adventurous voyage that I love... Coffee Prince feels like home to me, and I love going back to it from time to time!
