Dramabeans 5-Year Anniversary Giveaway #1

javabeans: Happy New Year! Another year has zoomed by — time flies when you’re watching dramas, don’tcha know — and 2012 marks an extra-special moment for us at Dramabeans, because the site turns 5 this month.

girlfriday: Happy birthday Dramabeans! You’re finally old enough to go to kindergarten!

javabeans: Or advanced into middle age, if we’re talking cat years. And as we know, the internet = cats.

girlfriday: Well that explains where all the time from the fourth dimension went to, ‘cause I certainly don’t FEEL five.

javabeans: I can’t believe I’ve been doing this for half a decade. K-dramas have sucked away my youth! How is this site still going? To think, when I started in January 2007, my primary mode of thought was, “I wonder how many people would stumble onto this place randomly.” Because then that would be a measure of how many people were interested in dramas in the English-speaking world. As it turns out, a whole damn lot.

girlfriday: I find that most of life’s truths can be found in quotes from Field of Dreams: “If you build it, they will come.”

javabeans: Also “This is my corn. You people are guests in my corn.” And “I have just created something totally illogical.”

girlfriday: See? Maybe internet also = baseball.

javabeans: In any case, we decided The Big 5 called for some celebratin’, and how better to celebrate than to give tons of stuff away? It’s a month-long Anniversary Giveaway Extravaganza!

girlfriday: We’ll be raining down presents during the entire month of January, because if you’re part of the Dramabeans community, it’s your birthday too, and birthdays call for presents!

javabeans: You might want to mark Sundays on your calendar, because every Sunday (or Monday, if you’re ahead of us in the States) we’ll be giving away something super-duper-fantastico exciting. Wait, am I overselling this?

girlfriday: Only if you’re a grinch who hates presents. Every week we’ll be asking you a question, and all you have to do is leave a comment with your answer and email address, and you’ll be entered in that week’s drawing.

javabeans: We’ll select winners by random draw. Check back a week later, and see if you’ve won! If you haven’t, fear not, because we’ll be announcing the next round as well. More prizes!

girlfriday: And they get better each week!

Meteor Garden, a Taiwanese drama. Prior to that, I was mostly an anime/manga fan, but when I heard that one of my favorite mangas (Hana Yori Dango) had been made into a live-action drama, I had to see it for myself . . . and even now, over ten years later, that image of Makino riding to school on her broken down motorbike, with the theme song blazing behind her . . . it's one of my most memorable drama moments ever. Not because it was an amazing piece of cinema or anything, but because, as a fan, having my favorite character come to life right before my eyes was a very surreal, exciting experience. At times, it's like I only watch dramas because I'm trying to recapture that elusive, brilliant feeling again.

And that's what eventually led me to discover all Asian dramas -- from Japan, Taiwan, China, and finally Korea. Korean dramas ended up being my favorite of them all, since I've always been a sucker for romance... even though I personally couldn't stand Boys Over Flowers, lol.

I used to think that kdrama were tearjerkers...Autumn in my Heart & Winter Sonata were bandied about as the 'right' way to kdramas and I arrogantly pooh-poohed it... Then My Name is Kim Sam Soon brought me around. Kim Sun-ah hooked me good; & there's nothing NOT to love about freshfaced HyunBin...(Daniel Henney is the pivotal cherry on this mighty fine red velvet cupcake)

When I began watching drama, I started with Japanese Drama. The very first one I watched was Hana Kimi. But the one that got me addicted to Korean dramas is Boys Over Flowers. It was just too good and I just couldn't stop watching; I loved how I cried when the characters cried and was able to feel their pain... through my laptop. After that, my school life has been intertwined with dramas. It's been almost a year and a half since I've watched Korean dramas and I've seen plenty. Some were worthwhile of my time and lack of sleep while others were just "eh" and have since then been forgotten.

First drama = My Girl

It's actually kinda funny because i didnt really mean to watch My Girl in the first place. My friend was lovestruck with the Korean movie, My Sassy Girl and when i tried to look for it, i ended up with My Girl.

It was boys over flowers, on hulu. Never would have dreamed of watching non-american TV but it popped up as a recommendation one sleepless night. Never been able to convert anyone, so I am very glad that you brought together this little community that helps fuel my obsession.

My first Drama Love would have to be Delightful Girl Chun Hyang...
it wasn't the first K drama I watched, though.. (that was Coffee Prince, which despite being a good drama didn't really make me crazy for the next episode)
I stumbled onto the site looking for recaps of Witch Amusement, and browsing the ratings section, found DGCH to be highly recommended, so thought I'd give it a try..
The first 2 or so mins of the first episode made me go 'erk?' a bit, but from then on in, it was like I was in a feverish trance of some sort, heh...
since then I've become a slave to K-everything, really (and most especially Hong sister dramas :-)

Happy 5-Year anniversary !
Pass the soju around!

Anyways... The first K-Drama that got me addicted was 'My Girl'. I started watching Korean Movies and I don't remember exactly how I ran into Lee Junki's profile on asianmediawiki...but I remember clicking on the current drama and I was hooked. =)

Now instead of doing homework or studying I'm watching Korean Dramas or movies.

My first one dated back to the 90s with "First love" and Bae Yong Joon. How much i miss the old days.
At that time I was 9 and the idea of a price riding white horse was no different from Bae Yong Joon. He still is one of the most handsome actor to date. That smile just melt me >.<

The first drama that I wathced was Delightful Girl Choon Hyang, and I loved it!!
I think my obsession not only for kdramas but for dramas where people had to get married started. Which led to me loving dramas like Full House(seariously I love fake marriage dramas!, If you think there is one I've missed please post a comment <3). But back to Choon Hyang, I think I watched that whole show in a weekend. It has all the classic kdrama qualities, the bickering couple who fall in love without realizing it. The Noona cruch that couldn't be, the obsessive second male lead who thinks he has a chance and the many break ups and a time jump. What's not to love?!?

Congratulations to Dramabeans on its 5th anniversary and may it have many more years to come, because I honestly don't know what I'd do without it. :)

My first drama love has to be Coffee Prince. I had just started watching Asian dramas and I was in a j-drama slump and had been scarred by my first tw-drama, so I thought I should try k-dramas and why not Coffee Prince, since it was so highly recommended?

It was pretty much love at first sight. How could I resist Gong Yoo and the Voice? It was over before I knew it, but it wasn't enough. There must be more, right? I started watching other k-dramas in order to find that sweet love I had with Coffee Prince. It's been 4 years since then and though I've watched and loved many a drama since then, Coffee Prince will always be the most special one as it started my k-drama obsession.

Definitely My Girl :)

It all started in 2004 when our local tv stations started airing Korean dramas dubbed in our language. I wasn't really into it back then, but after the first episode of My Girl aired sometime in 2006 - I got hooked immediately.

To be honest, I started watching it because Lee Dong Wook's pretty-boy features lured me in. I literally had sleepless nights because of it. Our TV format is different from other parts of the world, so an episode that's good for 50 minutes in Korea is stretched into 2-3 days with gazzillion commercials in 5-7 minute intervals. 8)

After watching that show, I realized that Korean dramas are definitely my thing. I think I might have watched every Korean drama aired in our local tv stations. When we were hooked up to a faster internet connection, I discovered a whole new world of Korean drama.

I am now a complete sucker for Korean drama (&& the whole Korean entertainment to be exact) and I haven't looked back ever since. :)

My Name Is Kim Sam Soon...but My Girl as a quick second

I started watching Japanese dramas a couple months before and was having a blast. I hadn't seen anything Korean and didn't think that I could enjoy Korean dramas as much...I know...stupid me...but then I was "forced" into watching MNIKSS's first episode and was hooked...no force needed to watch the rest...but many other dramas followed after that since I felt this need to watch more great kdramas...I feel like I am still catching up! Thanks for this site...it is always a blast to read any of y'alls recaps! :)

I have ALWAYS loved watching dramas, mostly English and TVB dramas though. I did not understand what the hype for Korean dramas was about when Autumn in my Heart was aired with Canto dubs.

It was not until I watched Dae Jang Geum (Canto dubbed) that I understood the hype, but the drama didn't own me yet. It was the Hongs' sisters "My Girl" that totally leashed me in. Since then I've been totally owned by kdramas and the Korean culture. My obsession for kdramas and the Korean culture has only increased each day for the past 4 years. This site is a big contributor of that. :) The only thing I regret was not discovering Korean dramas sooner.

Hmm, hard question. It's so weird to think that there was life before dramas! Ah, the days when I knew nothing about Korean culture or language and half the time the subtitles felt like they were in a foreign language (I could NOT figure out what oppa meant because it was used in so many different contexts). I actually think I have to say Goong, which is kind of weird. But it was the first drama I watched beginning to end without skipping the episodes I didn't like. And it was the first drama I watched with any traditional dress I think it helped me transition into sageuks in a way.

Hands down, my first drama love was My Name is Kim Sam Soon.
I believe I caught wind of that lovely series way back when...I was a freshman in high school. And when I was still watching on a tv that was like 8"x8" haha! Oh geez, so 8 years ago. But that's when the obsession started.
(Cue in dreamy flashback sequence) I was surfing through the abundance of basic cable channels--hah!--and stopped on channel 18, the Asian station. I only paused to watch it because it had subtitles and it totally caught my attention with the humor and good lookin' cast. Little did I know that I actually struck gold that opened my eyes to the world that is kdramas. And I've been basking in the dark side ever since then...

With that aside, cheers to 5 years!

Oh wow, everyone's first korean drama sounds so long ago! I kinda just got hooked up on korean dramas the year before...
The first korean drama I remember watching is winter sonata when my mum starts seeing it on the tv! It was so sad seeing those two lovers that really love each other overcoming so many things just to be together but just can't be together at the end ='(
Anyway, the kdrama that got me hooked up is SECRET GARDEN! I don't actually know why but the way they talk to each other is just so funny! The storyline is cheesy and realistic in a way! I don't find it overated at all! Love it <3
After finishing SG, I've coming back dramabeans to read recaps for 49Days, City Hunter, Vampire Prosecutor to name a few. Refreshing the page every 5 minutes... I knew that I'm hooked to kdrama!
Well, I'm actually watching What Happened At Bali now! So far, it's awesome ;)

Boys over flowers!!!

Okay so technically Playful Kiss in hulu, i got trap in by the colors, the fantasy, the silliness, and the new and different Asian culture that i am now obsesses with. Plus my first crush develop with Kim Hyun Joong. -^_^-
So while waiting for new episodes, BOF came into my life and i was done and over with!!! >.<
Even when others don't like it or may feel embarrassed to admit it, i love BOF! a girl never ever forgets her first love, even when i have shared deeper more emotional and/or silly, devastating relationships, I'm attached to that innocence that first love gives you with sweeping you off your feet and taking you to the clouds into dramaland!!!

Anyways its been more than a year of sleepless nights, non-stop giggling and laughter with over-dramitic-won't-stop tears and i-think-i'll-die-of-happiness crazy fantasies and dreams.....thank you dramaland for continuing to feed this oh-so-good infatuated girl =))

My first drama & also my first love is "Princess Hours." I was introduced to this drama when I was on vacation in the Philippines. At first glance, I thought "who are those girly guys???" But as I kept on watching, I was suddenly hooked and interested as to what would happen next. I was going to stay in the Philippines for only two weeks so there was no way for me to finish the drama... So that was when my buying of Kdramas addiction started...
So here I am, still in love with Kdramas, although my love now is "Coffee Prince"... I still remember "Princess Hours" very fondly... plus the lead is still "Yoon Eun Hye" who I am still hoping to produce a new drama that I would fall for again...
Besides the Kdrama dvd buying addiction, (w/c is a very expensive addiction btw) I think the dark side for me is when I just drop everything else & watch until 5am just to see "what will happen next" & end up finishing the whole drama in one sitting...
Anyway, Happy 5 yr anniversary to Dramabeans!!!

Happy Anniversary Dramabeans!
Borrowing a line from YAB, "Thank you for being born." :)

My first ever drama was Hana Yori Dango, and I found it absurd but was incredibly hooked (It was Nakatsu! He's sooo cute!)

But my REAL addiction began with Full House. A full work day's worth of hours spent on having my insides twisted coz I felt for their draggy episodes of lurrrve unconfessed and i wept watching them look at each other with that absurd longing). I had the OST playing in my head the whole day, and my life was never the same again.
Boys over Flowers was another trip. Sheer absurdity and total addiction! I'd retell the entire episode to my co-worker and i was looking for a recap online to remember some of the details of this episode and THAT was when I found your site, Dramabeans! I had hit a goldmine! Since then, my drama watching experience has been incomplete without reading your recaps. I watched Protect the Boss and I had imaginary conversations in my head with JB and GF the whole time. I could practically see what your screencaps would be like and which scenes would warrant the LMAO's and OMG's and I knew then that rom-coms watching experiences are incomplete without you! *sob*

I'm in Nepal so the prizes wouldn't really be applicable to me. And we get to buy Kdrama DVD's for less than a dollar here, so I'm not a contendor. But I just wanted to share :).

(I don't comment often enough coz I only get to watch after the dvds come out after the series ends.)

Coffee Prince ftw!

I remember when my korean friend introduced me to kdrama and recommend me to watch Coffee Prince. This was it. The gates of kdrama-land were opened. This was the drama that got me screaming, laughing, crying, everything! Watching episodes after episodes, lack of sleep and being sad why it ended so soon, but running to the next drama cause you're a crazy addict.

One thing I love about Korean drama is that it's so.. different, different than other drama's from other countries. Great storylines, great actors (not to mention very handsome at times ;)) and the list goes on! Kdrama also introduced me to variety shows and kpop and this blog! And now, after 3 years, I'm still holding on to it and never letting go :D

And seriously, I cannot imagine what I would be doing right this moment without kdrama.

The first drama that sucked me into this black hole (and I mean that in a good way) was Boys Before Flowers, my first Kdrama. *SIGH* I remember like it was yesterday. I went over to my best friend's house and she was watching Episode 2, where Goo Jun Pyo had dragged Geum Jan Di to his house and gave her a makeover. I watched five minutes of the episode with her and instantly, I was hooked. I went home and watched the first episode with my sister and we've been hooked ever since. I remember watching until 2 in the morning and waking up at 8 after my mom went to work to watch again. I was able to finish that 25-episode drama in just over two days. I watched Hong Kong dramas before that, and I didn't feel the feelings that I felt while watching Boys Before Flowers. Boys Before Flowers was the first time where I felt crazy about a couple, the first time I felt butterflies while watching a drama. The first time I sacrificed SLEEP for a drama. Since it was the first Kdrama I fell in love with, I've watched it about 3 or 4 times, since I was so reluctant to watch another Kdrama because I wanted to keep that first experience in my mind forever. I still love Boys Before Flowers and intend on watching it again sometime over the summer, to relive those moments. One thing's for sure, I've never procrastinated so much before discovering Kdramas, but I do not regret it one bit!

First drama? sadly, BBF... haha

First to get me totally hooked? You're Beautiful. That drama made me discover the meaning of 'drama crack'. At the time I was still a little embarrassed about my weird interest in cheesy korean dramas, so there was the added excitement of watching the episodes in secret, trying not to laugh too loudly, lest my flatmates heard me... needless to say, being able to read the comments here was a godsend.

Thank you dramabeans! For feeding me the delicious crack these last few years. om nom nom and congratulations!!

woo. over 1000 replies already. this will get lost in this but: my first and favorite: my name is kim samsoon.

i started off with japanese dramas but the humor was so goofy and nothing really caught my attention. i ended up watching kim sam soon on a whim and instantly fell in love. it was refreshing and great to see a love story that featured an 'imperfect' woman. given how most television shows (at least here in the states) depict overweight/over 30 women as gross sexless trolls, it was great to see a show that treated a woman like this as a human being deserving of love (even from a rich chaebol!)

from there i went on to watch winter sonata, my girl, what's up fox, coffee prince and many more. haven't looked back ever since!

A long time ago my family moved from our apartment building into a house that was in a completely different city and during my final year of elementary school, where I had been ever since kindergarten. (Grade 8 was also the year I was gonna get to go to wonderland - Yup I'm Canadian- for free!) Alas this did not happen.

So because of the move and the fact that my parents are procrastinators (that's where I get it from) they didn't set up our TV service for months but we did have internet, because I needed it for school. Being friendless and TV-less an e-mail I got from my aunt (who lives in Korea) was a sort of God-Send. She send me a link to a show called My Girl.

I figured I had nothing better to do so I'd watch it since she seemed to have enjoyed it. That became the first TV(computer?) marathon of my life! My butt did not leave my computer chair at least until episode ten. (It was so funny and sweet and I loved the sub plot with the aunt! OMG I died laughing! I recall French music in the background when she envisioned a love scene!)

What made it all the more difficult was that my best friend was coming over the next day. I kept telling myself that I wouldn't have energy the next day so I should only watch one more ep then convinced myself to watch another and another, etc. The good thing was I finished the series the bad thing was the next day, when my friend came over, I was asleep for most of the visit. Since then Ive become part of this global online love for Kdramas and know more Korean actors than I do American!

That, ladies and gents was when my decent into Kdrama madness began...

Meteor Garden (Taiwan 2001) trigerred my drama love but I can't recall what comes after that, then Full House (Korean 2004) woke up my love for it, then there was Hana Yori Dango (Japan 2005) but Boys over Flower (Korean 2009) really made me fall in love, over and over again. I watched it at least 3 times, all episodes straight like I haven't watched it. So, I think it is my first true love. Jun Pyo oppa~ ^^

Well, the first drama I'd ever heard about was Goong, because I loved the manga and got super excited when the scanlation group announced there was going to be a live-action version. I was like "WHAT?!?!" And then I started looking into Kdramas and getting super excited! I watched Full House and My Girl at the same time, because those were the most recommended from what I could tell, and I instantly fell in love! And of course, after that I realized there was a Jdrama of Hana Yori Dango, my favorite manga series ever, so then I got on those...yeah. (: So it was manga/manwha that turned me over to the dark side, really.
