Dramabeans 5-Year Anniversary Giveaway #4

javabeans: So here we are with the last giveaway in our five-year anniversary extravaganza! Phew, I’m tired. All this organizing is exhausting. Next year Dramabeans is just gonna have to deal with a store cake and a third-rate magician.

girlfriday: Just no clowns. That’s no way to spend a birthday.

javabeans: Now I know how Santa feels. Well, maybe without the drunk crazy.

girlfriday: Maybe this is why he drinks.

javabeans: Who knew it was work giving stuff away?

girlfriday: Well I’m inherently selfish, so not me. But it WAS really cool to read everyone’s thank you’s to our hard-working contributors and guesties. Thanks for giving them so much love!

javabeans: Yes. It makes us feel better for loading them down with recaps. What, this recap factory doesn’t run on unicorn dust and fangirl dreams, you know.

girlfriday: No, it runs on the blood sweat and tears of the few willing to be paid in Dramabeans Dollars, aka Abs Photos of the Day.

javabeans: Anyway, this is our last giveaway to celebrate our fifth birthday, which means this is your last chance to enter to win a birthday giveaway prize!

girlfriday: For the last big hurrah, we’re giving away a Samsung Galaxy Tablet, so you can watch dramas, listen to kpop, and read Dramabeans wherever you go! If you end up in rehab because of it, we will disavow all knowledge of enabling your habit.

javabeans: Enter at your own peril.

And now, for our winners. Congratulations to…

  • Jules (aka snoozit), winner of a one-year premium subscription to Dramafever,
  • Missyu_who, winner of the other premium subscription to Dramafever,
  • and Carinne, winner of the iPod nano (with javabeans playlist).

Giveaway #4

Question: What do you want to see on Dramabeans in 2012? This is your chance to tell us that one thing you’ve always wanted to see on DB or what you want to see more of this year. Maybe that’s more of the same, or maybe you’ve got a wild ‘n crazy out-there idea. We are not averse to crazy. (As always, please use a valid email in the comment form. No need to tell us where you live this time.)

Prize: A 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tablet 7.0 Plus.

Winner announced: Sunday, January 29, at 8pm, Pacific Standard Time*

*Or, 10pm in Mexico City, 11pm in NYC, 1am in Buenos Aires, 4am in London, 5am in Paris, noon in Singapore and Manila, 1pm in Seoul and Tokyo, or 3pm in Sydney and Vladivostok. Okay, you get the point. (You can refer to this handy Time and Date converter to find out what this is in your time zone.)

Love this blog! Especially the uniqueness and realness of the voice of each blogger.

I would love to see more ...collaborative recaps? For example, having the last episode of a drama or the entire drama recapped by at least 2 bloggers (or maybe all bloggers for the last episode of a drama?). I loved the final episode recap sometimes done by both girlfriday and javabeans, because it's so fun to hear the banter between you guys during the recap and hearing each one's perspective and opinion on the drama. Hearing another person's opinion provides new insight into understanding or interpreting the drama, which always adds to my drama watching experience.

Love your site. I usually read your site on my Android phone so as a suggestion... I hope you improve the mobile phone site for faster download and easier browsing. It's not very easy to browse and read different episodes.

I am coming out from my lurker status to participate so this will be long…. Would love to see more “Pop Culture & Society” posts. The info you’ve posted so far has provided invaluable understanding of Korean culture and even more would be equally invaluable. If you want some ideas, here are some questions I’ve had:
• What does it mean to see someone as "a woman" or "a man"? I think I get it but I might be missing a bigger cultural theme behind it.
• Joseon dress and culture such as: what’s up with the Mickey Mouse and Goofy hats? (Sorry, that’s what I call them.) What are the purposes/meanings of the different hats? Though, not sure I could offer an explanation for 18th century wigs in the U.S.
• Was there originally not a Korean word for “kiss?” I’ve noticed that the shows only use the English word.
• Greater insights into things like “confessions” and “first loves” would be appreciated as well. They seem to have greater weight than in the States.

Not sure if it’s feasible, but it would be amazing to have a forum on the site. I know we already have Open Threads and that other sites offer forums BUT this site has such a great community. It would be fantastic to create discussions on our own; especially when I have questions…which as you can see happens a lot.

Also, I would never say no to more recaps, but knowing that you all are busy I have to say that javabeans recap of “The Princess’ Man” was a tour de force. It hit all the important points and themes of the show and shed new light on major plot points; girl’s got skills. If a recap of every episode is off the table I’ll gladly take a series review.

Additionally, I skipped last week’s question so if you don’t mind I’d like to say thank you to all of you who take so much time to share the often aggravating, but mostly heart-stopping, sigh-inducing world of kdramas. Without this site and your dedication, a white girl from the U.S. like me would be lost. And special thanks to javabean and girlfriday’s for offering their drama ratings, they have saved me and I’m sure countless others from wasting our time and hearts on dreadful dramas. You all are the best, thank you!

i would love it if you guys could develop the review part of dramabeans

i know you guys already have a reviews on drama beans but i wish you guys could develop it more you guys could have extensive reviews and also a point system that all the recappers can rate a series from 1-10 and the aggregated results will be the final rating. At the same time below you could let readers rate the series.

it would be something like metacritic. what do you guys think?

I would really really really (really) like to see movie reviews on this channel. I love movies more than dramas and it would be super awesome to have movie review on here too.

I greatly appreciate how the detailed recaps on Dramabeans supply a plethora of information on various dramas. However, while it's easy to scan a recap and decide that you're going to try a few episodes of the drama, for the dramas that aren't recapped, there remains little -professional- information on how they're faring and whether or not they're worth watching.

I'm not trying to suggest that Dramabeans recap every drama out there, as it probably shouldn't be done even if it were possible, because you guys already have enough work on your hands. But it would be nice to find even just brief overviews or reviews on dramas that you aren't recapping. For dramas that you guys are watching but not recapping, revealing your thoughts midway or 3/4 into the drama would be nice so that we can at least know a little about them or whether or not we should pick it up, especially if we normally find dramas to watch based on Dramabeans's recommendations/recaps, as many of us do. Also, many of us only watch dramas that we normally would not have given a second look after reading raves about them on Dramabeans, thus the benchmark reviews/overviews would be helpful for those hunting for a drama to watch. (I'm sorry for suggesting more work when you guys already have enough.)

Although this isn't a new feature, I also wish that the Dramabeans navigating system could become easier. I personally find it difficult to find old recaps on the site, because when I search for them in the search bar, they always seem to be buried amongst unrelated recent posts, and I have to backtrack quite a few pages to actually find them.

Otherwise, thank you Dramabeans for providing so much news on k-dramas -- I truly appreciate the balance between news and recaps and podcasts and such.

Thanks for the giveaways, and thanks for all your hard work, all you wonderful people at Dramabeans :D

Thanks to everyone who works on this site and makes this addiction so much fun! You guys are seriously the best.

I loved when there were "extended glossary" entries being made about cultural points- oppa and gumiho entries and the like. I would like to see more of those, maybe even some folktales/history lessons via drama references?

I agree with some other folk who've asked for more music reviews- I love Epik High and yours was one of the few deep analyses I could find of their work.

And, as always, please continue to bring sass and substance to every topic you cover. I really appreciate that news isn't simply regurgitated on here but processed and gone over with a red pen and a cupful of judgment. Among scandals and plastic surgery, station boycotts and sleepless nights, y'all write recaps and blog posts that help keep Kdrama-land both smart and silly, with ne'er a dull moment. Thanks!

Dramabeans is so perfect already that it was hard for me to think what extra things I would want in this site! But if there was one thing to top it off, it would be nice to have a playlist of your favourite songs playing automatically once you enter the site to set off the right mood! ^_^

Dear Javabeans and Girlfriday,

I love reading your recaps and I appreciate all the time you spend to give us, kdrama-fans, a chance to take a closer look at or re-live each episode and spoil ourselves with your awesome, funny comments!

I feel a little guilty asking for more .... but ... since you asked, please keep giving us your wonderful recaps! Moreover, Dramabeans is my main source of information for upcoming dramas, so whatever dramas/shows I have heard of and usually end up watching, I usually find out about them from here. (like 1N2D - I was oblivious to the fact that the show existed before you started recapping it.) So the variety roulette is great in that regard. Speaking of which, I love the conversation-style-recaps such as 1N2D! Plus pictures are always nice! (like the year end awards, press conferences and such).

But, putting my wishes aside, I hope you can write about what interests you the most because I think those are the most interesting and fun to read :).

On an ending note, I should take this opportunity to once again say Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! for giving your time to keep Dramabeans alive and breathing.

Hi ladies! =)

Thank you so much for being our favorite web site for years. =)

What I'd like to see more on this website is for you ladies to get exclusives with the k-entertainment stars! At five years, you've arrived, and your site is one the first destinations for English content on Korean entertainment, a fact that I think the kmedia is aware of. I think you could parlay that into exclusive content, like interviews, with your favorite people.

Cheers!

I can't believe I never saw the 5 year anniversary posts! :(

The prizes!

The posts!

The prizes again!

Whyyyyyyyyyyyy!

Ahem. Anyway, a Super duper belated Happy 5 year anniversary Dramabeans! Haha,I know it's the end of the year (of which I hope is not the end of the world ;) ) but still, better late than never :)

I've been an avid follower of yours ever since I googled the TV series "You're Beautiful". I've enjoyed thoroughly your recaps and I can't help but be amazed by your skills in putting your articles into life. I can almost see each scene - laughing, crying, laughing again, as you describe with those beautiful words, touching words, frustrating words, bickering words...uhhh.. um, let's stick with the beautiful words :)

On a serious note, I actually cried a few times in the internet cafe just by reading your posts. That's how effective you are to me :D

In the end, I hope you'll have more prizes next year *continuous nodding* (this is not my real purpose :) ) Anyway, I have a slim chance to get the winning entry, but then again, knowing that I have tried is enough for me :)

I also hope you'll continue in bringing us the most wonderful recaps, as watching these dramas isn't enough for me. Reading your posts gives me fresh perspectives, and of course, a great roller coaster ride :D

Always remember that you have readers here in the Philippines :) We love you Dramabeans :D
