girlfriday: Yeah how come TOP is rumored to be in all dramas but starring in none? Big tease.
javabeans: So the synopsis sounds weird and random: A chick is dumped by an idol star, and to get her revenge, decides to become a celebrity herself.
girlfriday: Because THAT’s easy.
javabeans: And then, she is romanced by a real “top star.”
girlfriday: Because THAT’s easy.
javabeans: And apparently this is based on a real-life incident that came to light in the past year. Wut? Wouldn’t we know about it if it were?
girlfriday: What actress dated an idol and then a top star?
javabeans: Shin Se-kyung?
girlfriday: Who did she date?
javabeans: Some boy from SHINee. Jonghyun? They went public very early on, she got some idol fangirl hate, and they broke up.
girlfriday: But then she’d have to date someone even bigger after that.
javabeans: Is she dating in secret? Do we just not know?
girlfriday: Let’s see… someone who dated an idol and then debuted, and then dated a top star… LEE JIA! Oh it’s totally Lee Jia!
javabeans: Ooh. Hm. That puts a whole new slant on things. Although I bet Seo Taiji would beat you up if you called him an idol to his face.
girlfriday: But Seo Taiji was once an idol star. Not recently, but when he started, he wore crazy clothes and did dance routines on Inkigayo.
javabeans: True. I find it really funny to imagine that Lee Jia became a star to get revenge, but let’s call that poetic license.
girlfriday: Maybe she DID do it to get revenge. And Bae Yong-joon was her celebrity fairy godmother.
javabeans: Maybe he has a soft spot for spurned women? Is THIS his superpower? To effect the slowest revenge ever?
girlfriday: It really is the slowest possible way to get revenge on a guy.
javabeans: Well they say that living well is the best revenge, but still…
girlfriday: But then… the story didn’t end well for her romance-wise, with the top star either.
javabeans: Maybe in the drama, she won’t lie to him about formerly being married to the idol boy.
girlfriday: That would be best.

I think the main problem with it is the main actress - she can't sell the character. Neither of her modes (boring and screaming maniac) really capture the Kyoko character...

nah. i love the main actress. but its just the quality.
after watching korean dramas which cost A LOT of money to make, everything is the taiwanese dramas seems so cheesy and cheap. >_<
except the actors of course!

I don't think Koreans invest way more than Taiwanese. It is all about technique and formulas that work in a country or another. This is the reasons we have so many remakes of the same thing - same plot different ways to expose it
Didn't you notice something? That every time a Korean actor/ess comes from a cheap Jdrama, twdrama or mainland drama - s/he comes with developed skills and better acting: why? because that person learned from their foreign seniors. Even the process to prepare to star in a foreign drama is a process of learning therefore they become better actors.
If you look at Taecyeon in Boku to Star no 99 nichi he acts in a third language like it is a walk in the park, while we all know it isn't and he ain't that great of an actor in Korea, but with just a few lines well delivered he can hold his own in that drama
Kim Jae Wook came after a mobile jdrama a changed man and Park Shin Hye gave up the cutesy after Hayate the Combat Butler - even though there the standards are "act cute" - it just learned her how to be a lil more discreet with it.
Well I can't say the same thing for Jang Nara - before going to China her overacting was a hit, now her natural acting in Baby Faced Beauty won her an award but didn't won her the ratings she had before. The same thing happened to Chae Rim - she was cast with Choi Si Won - but she got tons of antis because of her styling in the drama - the stylists made from a beautiful woman an ahjuma to have a better understanding of the character.

I totally agree! I really loved Kyoko in the manga... 'cause she's mad crazy hater like me! And all her mini maniac hating Kyokos!! <3 <3 The actress really ruins it for me. She just comes off as over exaggerated and totally didn't get what Kyoko's all about. Kyoko's just all insane in the beginning. which I love hehehehhee

Agree! I loved Kyoko in the anime and manga...she was crazy and cool and feisty and kickass. Ivy Chen as Kyoko doesn't have that fire and determination and innocence that Kyoko has. She just comes across as overacting. The exaggerated expressions are so tiring.... I feel exhausted just watching her. The mini devil Kyokos that are unleashed from her Pandora's Box are so frozen and dead and grey I'd rather they were left out totally. I've stopped watching the show. Sigh sigh sigh sigh

Yup, the main actress doesn't bring forth Kyoko at all...even the mini CG-fied Kyokos are...unconvincing, to say the least.
I think Donghae is doing fine but Siwon...needs to have more than 1 expression.
I agree also that the quality is disappointing. Lots of random characters added into the script plus a change in some of the characters personality is just taking out the fun of watching this drama for me when I so highly anticipated it. LOL
But I think TOP will be able to portray either Sho or Ren, but I do hope he'll accept the job first :)

Actually, at the beginning of the manga Ren was sort of closed off from everybody, always serious about work and disapproving of many things and people who didn't meet up to his extremely high standards. Now that I think of it, he sounds a lot like mr Darcy. Heh.
When he begins to open up and change, he becomes fully rounded character. So for now, I'm fine with Siwon being a bit of an enigma, If he can pull off charming, insecure, jealous, awkward, in love and full of darkness Ren later on.

I watch it cause I'm an ELF and SIWONEST and because I felt bad that I didn't finish Poseidon. But, I probably won't finish Extravagant Challenge either. SIWON, Y U NO STAR IN DRAMAS THAT AREN'T BORING?
But, TOP MIGHT just convince me to watch this. I love TOP.

I also love the manga and the anime. The taiwanese version is currently in the boring phase of the drama, imo. Since when she starts becoming an actress, the fun arcs start. Also I think it's too exaggerated. I wish it was different in its representation.

Hahaha, I thought I was the only one thinking that it was Skip Beat. Please not Lee Jia for Kyoko.... I don't think she can't pull off Kyoko's mad face. I also don't see TOP for Skip Beat, maybe as Sho but him blond doesn't might not make him look sexy now. If ever they do plan a SB for Korea, I hope they choose Park Shin Hye and Lee Hongki. They look like a pair to pull it off.

Totally thought it was Skip Beat Kor version. Agree with you guys that the T drama sucks. Siwon is wasted in it.....he probably can't immerse himself fully in the role because of the strange mix of languages. Sigh. I was so looking forward to it too. I hope, no, I'm confident this time around with TOP as Ren, everything's going to be perfect. But peleasssse not a screechy over the top Ivy Chen clone.

Totally agree!! 1st thought I had was this has to be Skip Beat!! Sure hope Top will be in this cos the Taiwanese version is disappointing with the female lead (has been acting quite well but just dun hv the charisma to make me wanna watch her) and the dubbing. I am a fan of Skip Beat so am really keeping my fingers crossed for a gd version of the show. After all, the anime ended abruptly just when things were getting hot!

Um... is this me or is the synopsis you just described basically the plot of the manga Skip Beat! (which is also the basis for the currently airing idol Taiwanese drama starring 2 Super Junior members called Extravagant Challenge).
Me thinks this is the Korean adaptation of Skip Beat, whether officially or not (though what with all the adaptions of mangas that have come out of korea recently, I wouldn't be surprised if it actually was. Especially since Extravagant Challenge is shaping up to be a hit).

It may add a little something to have it borrow elements of a real event, too, though!
Give it a K-Pop savvy twist that would utilize Korean culture instead of just trying to transpose the drama, which Extravagant Challenge did. And it is a little too funny to have it be that "Japanese themed inn" and "restaurant" are the stand-ins for traditional establishments in the original...

It's based off of the manga, Skip Beat. They already made a Taiwanese drama, and so this one would be the Korean one. I don't understand why there isn't a Japanese one yet. Anyways, I hope TOP would just accept a role already.

He can't be Ren. Ren is too good of an actor to have TOP (bad delivery) be him. And Sho sings (TOP = rapper).
TOP could be that creepy vampire (?) guy that goes for Kyoko when she was filming Dark Moon.
Sigh. I miss SB but I can't get used to the recent drawing style. But a drama version would be nice.

all in all, i'm glad he didn't do love rain(too much melo and the whole parents love transferring to the kids generation who looks just like them, is just not my cup of tea).
and absolute boyfriend would require too much skin which this boy is not ready for.
i just find it funny that it'll basically be the same role siwon is playing in extravagant challenge, considering siwon was also the idol actor in athena while top did iris.

This sounds like a remake of the Japanese manga/anime Skip-Beat! Which is actually pretty awesome, despite the goofy title. I think Si-won's in a Taiwanese live-action remake as well, although I haven't watched it yet.
Basically, a small-town girl puts everything into dating her crush, learns his family business... and then he runs away with her, becomes a rock star, and then she gets dumped. Fuming, she goes straight to the agency competing against him and works hard at becoming an actress to rival his fame. She meets the top actor there, but it's really more about her search for self-worth than the romance, which is what makes it so great.

The plot/storyline sounds like it will be the Korean version of Skip-Beat/Extravagant Challenge (at least I hope it is, if not someone may have a plagiarism/copyright lawsuit on their hands).
Too bad Siwon and Donghae didn't sign up for this version instead of the Taiwanese version. I was excited to see them and the live-action version of Skip-Beat, but just haven't been able to find myself drawn to it. It might be the lead actress in it, I liked Ivy in Black & White and thought she would bring a little more of the kickass girl to it, but her portrayal her just seems depressing and manic have the time. And the dubs for Siwon and Donghae don't help either.
Well hopefully this version will be better! :)

But, I'd like to see T.O.P as Sho, they could always change that up and make it so he's an idol rapper or something. That really wouldn't hurt the plot at all. I'd love to see him as a jerk! It would be great! C'mon, it would... imagine those eyebrows and sly smirk up to some evil. Awesome.
And then the top star could beeee... GONG YOO?!?!?! (Not just saying that cuz I miss him and want him to be another drama....no...no. Shhh.) I'm also not opposed to Eric Mun..but he's done that already hasn't he? *cough* Spy Myung Wol *cough*. But new year, new YOU Eric Mun! WHOOT!...or Won Bin? He doesn't say much anyway, neither does Ren...perfect.
And who would play Kyoko? I personally vote for Han Hyo Joo...I feel like she would do that role justice.

This does sound like Skip Beat. But if they are doing it,u it would have to be in production by now. As the manga is finally getting near the end, this is a more sensible time to start filming a drama version. I would love to see any version that sticks as closely to the plot as the anime did. I would not care if the genre of music the "Sho" character plays changed, as I do not really feel it is important to the story. Overall, I enjoyed the Taiwanese version, but agree that they added some unnecessary characters and situations. Gong Xi was not Kyouko, but the others were not exactly like the manqa characters either. l thought her role meshed well with others.

i think YGE was planning for Top to pursue acting this year but 'celebrity' was just one of the many choices. but hearing some negative comments about celebrity as similar to skipbeat, YG changed his mind. better look at other projects

The taiwanese version lacks, like what was meant to be funny, seemed over dramatic, what was meant to be romantic, seemed fake. Basically, everything that was meant to be something, wasnt.

lol the Taiwanese live action version with Donghae and Siwon is disappointing. You know it's going to be very awkward when everyone else speak Taiwanese and both of the lead actors speak Korean and had to be dubbed with Taiwanese in the final outcome...
and apparently they won't air the one with Korean dub because of copyrights. Maybe this one will be the legal Korean version of Skip Beat? idk.

Oh Man. I will be really excited if that actually works out as a drama. I love Skip Beat (at least in Manga form!) and was really excited for the Japanese drama (which fell through last I watch anything Japanese years ago). The 12 year old girl in me is Uber Pleased by this news.

it IS skip beat korean version AND IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH JONGHYUN-SHIN SE KYUNG scandal or jia (and jonghyun and shin se kyung are rumored to have stayed friends) !! -_-'' skip beat was created so many years ago way before they even debuted! i hope this time TOP will be casted for real. i really though he'd be in absolute boyfriend korean version!

Yeahnit sounds like skip beat which is the meat manga ever!!!!!!!! If it becaomse true with TOP hot heck yeah and hope they do a good ending bc manga still going and Taiwanese version going to give it a try bc of super junior also saw them on NY Madison Square Garden the were amazing best night of my life. :)

Chill with the speculations people. The whole "based on real life" description is just to drum up interest and gossip. Nothing about this plot sounds realistic like most kdramas. It's just a set-up. Hopefully it will turn out well once they get going. TOP might be good in this role especially if he gets to perform!

Regardless of who stars in it, I'm excited at the idea of a kdrama version of Skip Beat! I, for one, happen to love the Taiwan version. Maybe my expectations were so low, that I am easily impressed, I don't know, but I think they're doinig a great job at sticking to the manga storyline. I've been following the drama with the manga open side by side, and they totally recreate some frames from the comic exactly, I was impressed :)
At any rate, one thing that makes me happy about a kdrama version (aside from a more... slick... look) is that the kdrama will surely have more episodes than the tw drama. The anime was also weak because it ended before the story really gets going. Hopefully a kdrama will be able to cover more ground.
